IN THE LOOP Jewellery designer Maria Black’s spring/summer 2018 collection was inspired by rollercoasters – a metaphor for the highs and lows of life. The Loop collection comprises a range of circular gold earrings, swirled into spirals adorned with diamonds and pearls, as seen in the pictured Sea Viper design (4,100DKK). All Maria Black’s work pays homage to her Scandinavian heritage, combining minimal detailing with a maximum level of craftsmanship and service. NO PLACE LIKE HOME For spring/summer Ferm Living celebrates home as a haven. SCANDINAVIAN SIMPLICITY Swedish fashion brand Filippa K, which turns 25 this year, is known for its minimal aesthetic and attention to quality. This season’s collection, as seen in the campaign featuring musical sister duo Say Lou Lou, is very much in keeping with the brand’s ethos. Flattering high waists give structure to pleated skirts and wide-legged trousers. Despite borrowing from formal dress such as the tuxedo, tailoring is relaxed. Varied fabrics add texture, and textile choices reflect the brand’s mission to be more sustainable. grc Filippa K, Ny Østergade 13, 1101 Copenhagen, +45 5360 5010, filippa-k.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 59

Since Mykita was founded in 2003, it has become one of Europe’s leading eyewear brands. Alongside this season’s desirable collection of opticals and sunglasses, the brand also presents collaborations with designers such as Bernhard Willhelm, Martine Rose and Damir Doma. Part of the Echo range created jointly by Mykita and Maison Margiela, the pictured style (3,700DKK) is characterised by an exaggerated version of the classic cat-eye shape combined with a futuristic, visor-like top line. grc Mykita, Grønnegade 43, 1107 Copenhagen, +45 6913 5251, mykita.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 59

DUAL BENEFITS This spring Aesop introduced a new skincare range, carefully developed for combination skin and aptly called In Two Minds. The trio of products (from 220DKK) comprises a cleanser, a toner and a moisturiser, which work to restore the balance of skin that is oily across the T-zone and dry across the cheeks. The In Two Minds gel-based cleanser with salicylic acid cleanses thoroughly, the toner soothes and the Facial Hydrator nourishes and hydrates. As with all Aesop products, the ingredients have been carefully selected for effective results. grc Aesop, Værnedamsvej 7, 1819 Copenhagen, +45 3322 1826, aesop.com
JUST COS In this season’s collection for men, which includes relaxed tailoring, light knits and summerfriendly overcoats, Cos maintains the pared-back approach to design for which it is known so well. Word on the Danish designers have injected their distinctive sensibilities into streetwear, creating an exciting new genre that’s as practical as it is covetable, says Rebecca Rhys-Evans
Stre
T
he streetwear concept was first seen in Los Angeles and New York in the 1990s, as a hybrid of popular fashion references and styles that surrounded skateboarding and hip-hop culture. Rooted in the streets, as the name suggests, it was originally associated with youth and urban culture, rather than stemming from the fashion houses and studios that traditionally dictate trends. Although this style has been fairly constant in subcultures around the world for three decades, more recently it has been adopted and reinterpreted in Scandinavia, with 64
67 70
Copenhagen being a particular hotspot. Nordic designers, many of them Danish, have defined a progressive version of streetwear that is more refined, bridging the gap between the nostalgic 90s sports-inspired style and the luxury fashion landscape. Scandinavian fashion brands are famous for combining form, function and crisp simplicity: there is a utilitarian approach, a need for comfort and practicality, that can only come from countries with challenging climates. The Danish interpretation of streetwear is designed for the contemporary man Right: Ganni pre-spring 2018

or woman who needs a wardrobe of multifunctional garments suitable for all occasions. There is a strong focus on quality and the use of technical fabrics that encourage breathability and can retain heat. The aesthetic is creative and fashion-forward; colour palettes are often bold, shapes conceptual and materials luxurious. No wonder the brands that define this style have captured the eye of the international fashion world. Founded in Copenhagen in the early 2000s, Norse Projects is a prime example of a brand that combines streetwear, workwear and high-end fashion. By 2009, co-founders Tobia Sloth, Anton Juul and Mikkel Grønnebæk had created their first in-house line for men. They dropped the hip-hop and punk
Minimalist design does not equate to minimal effort references and the maximised logos and graffiti graphics that previously characterised streetwear and replaced them with collaborations with guest artists that fit with their DNA and brand philosophy. The Norse Projects motto ‘the mark of true luxury is not the grand gesture, but the simple things done well’ summarises not only the brand’s own approach but the Scandinavian relationship with fashion. Brands such as Our Legacy, Wood Wood and interiors label Hay all follow a similar philosophy. Above: Norse Projects spring/summer 2018
S H O P | 43
The spring/summer 2018 Norse Projects collection pushes this further, taking inspiration from minimalist American artist Donald Judd, who steered away from materialism and trends. His work has a factory aesthetic which can also be seen in the Norse Projects collections this spring. Women’s streetwear takes a more luxe approach in Copenhagen than menswear, but nonetheless, brands such as By Malene Birger and Ganni offer a multi-use functionality typical of the genre. Tobia Sloth of Norse Projects says that Danish women have a distinctive approach to style: ‘They do it for themselves – not to fit someone’s idea of how they should look or act. You see this expressed in Copenhagen, where many women
are currently wearing minimal sneakers and are very dressed down, while still combining a feminine expression and personal style. Lots of women are adopting a more functional approach to dressing and mixing it up with subtle styling cues to create an individual look that expresses their unique personality. Much like good design, it’s the nuances that count.’ By Malene Birger follows similar principles. ‘Whether it’s the ease of the cut or the quality of the embellishment, each and every piece encapsulates a sense of Danish values and way of life – always with a touch of playfulness and decadence,’ the eponymous designer says of her collections, which are always subtle, sophisticated and ultimately easy.

By Malene Birger makes pieces that are suitable for the office, travel, motherhood and beyond. This kind of inclusivity is an integral part of Danish streetwear brands. The coming together of streetwear and luxury is reflected in the price tags: most of these brands sit in an accessible yet high-end bracket that is designed for women of different ages and incomes. Ganni, which began its story with the search for the perfect cashmere knit in 2000, has seen a huge surge in popularity in recent years. Stocked in over 400 of the world’s best boutiques, worn by influencers, fashion editors and celebrities across the world, Ganni epitomises Danish streetwear style and often trends on Instagram or on the streets at various fashion weeks. Creative director Ditte Reffstrup explains that Scandinavians have managed to democratise design without compromising quality or aesthetics.
Above (both): Ganni pre-spring collection 2018
‘Danish style in particular is very laid back, easy-going and quite playful,’ she says. As Reffstrup tells us, the collections of modern Danish designers make it clear that they have ‘grown up surrounded by highquality craftsmanship, both in terms of furniture and architecture, which has definitely left its mark.’ Contemporary cool is a Copenhagen staple, reflected at events such as Copenhagen Fashion Week and Copenhagen International Fashion Fair, where garments for both men and women show that minimalist design does not equate to minimal effort. In fact, it requires deep reflection on the subtleties of style. Simplicity and practicality are core values for streetwear culture, reflecting the idea that one can tackle all of life’s roles wearing the same labels. It’s this versatility that makes Danish streetwear so popular around the world

TABLE TALK Copenhagen’s waterfront location makes it the perfect place to sample delicious seafood, says Hannah Lewis
The vibrant city of Copenhagen is a favourite among foodie travellers: its culinary scene is recognised as one of the best in the world. And with its proximity to water, it’s no surprise that the Danish capital is a fantastic place to sample beautifully fresh fish and seafood. From fine dining restaurants to casual eateries, Copenhagen’s leading seafood specialists know just what to do with the catch of the day. Serving everything from classic dishes to modern concepts, light bites to indulgent feasts, these five restaurants vary in style and setting, but are united by a love of excellent fish and seafood, always cooked to perfection. globalblue.com

Carnivores will be glad to hear juicy steaks and rich tartares are available too. Pair your meal with a local beer or a well-mixed cocktail and finish with a creamy homemade soft-serve ice cream. with all manner of delicious, seasonal fish and seafood, accompanied by fresh green sides. The atmosphere is casual, and, while this is a popular spot, a number of tables are reserved for drop-in diners; there’s a wellstocked bar to keep you occupied if you have to wait a little. Musling, Linnésgade 14, 1361 Copenhagen, +45 3410 5656, musling.net
Krogs, which opened in 1910, is one of Copenhagen’s oldest restaurants. The Gammel Strand location was chosen for its proximity to the best fishmongers in the city, and today the restaurant remains committed to offering only the freshest fish and seafood. The menu changes depending on the day’s catch, so be sure to ask the staff for their recommendations, which might be anything from grilled octopus to oysters to pickled herring. This is seafood fine dining at its best. Krogs, Gammel Strand 38, 1220 Copenhagen, +45 3315 8915, krogs.dk globalblue.com

KANALEN For a beautiful waterside setting, head to Kanalen; whether dining inside this light-filled space or in its charming al fresco area, your meal will be accompanied by the sight of sailing boats floating tranquilly by. Serving contemporary French cuisine in a Danish-style setting, the seasonal menu offers a great selection of
fish and seafood dishes as well as meat and vegetarian options. The team has been collecting excellent wines throughout the 30 years Kanalen has been in business, so be sure to ask for advice on the perfect pairing. Kanalen, Wilders Plads 2, 1403 Copenhagen, +45 3295 1330, restaurant-kanalen.dk
HUMMER Lobster lovers will feel at home at Hummer, which aims to take the covetable shellfish down from its pedestal and bring it into everyday eating. Find it in the form of lobster crisps or a delectable lobster roll – or simply halved, poached and served with lemon and dill mayonnaise. The rest of the menu is based around the freshest catches, and might feature halibut, cod or crab. We also highly recommend the classic moules frites. Hummer’s quality and presentation are undoubtedly high-end, but the modern, congenial atmosphere makes everyone feel instantly welcome.

NN07 For spring/summer 2018 Danish menswear brand NN07 has taken inspiration from Italy. In the spirit of la dolce vita, the collection includes Riviera-style revere-collared shirts in playful abstract prints, Oxford shirts in leaf and fruit prints, striped jumpers, and the brand’s signature chino trousers in stone, khaki green and navy – all bringing a little laid-back Italian menswear style to Copenhagen.

7 FOR ALL MANKIND This season 7 For All Mankind presents a range of jeans for men and women in a range of washes, spanning from dark through to light blue. Other variations include distressed and bleached styles. Alternatives to jeans include chinos for men and classic denim miniskirts for women, all of which can be paired with a plain white tee, a chambray shirt or a denim jacket from the spring/ summer 2018 collection. As ever, the Californian brand can be counted on for premium-quality denim and a great fit.

40: WORD ON THE STREET

40: WORD ON THE STREET

Креативный globalblue.ru
