MODERN MOVEMENT Bucherer has been creating high jewellery and watches for almost 130 years. For 2016 the brand has developed a new watch movement, the CFB (Carl F Bucherer) A2000, designed and developed entirely in its own workshops. This drives the classic yet innovative Manero Peripheral watch, which is available from the end of October. The new timepiece is an impressive blend of modern engineering and traditional horlogerie. It has a multifaceted face displaying hours and minutes, as well as seconds and the date. The Manero Peripheral watch comes in six models which cost from €6,000 to €15,600: customers can choose to have the 44mm round case in either stainless steel or rose gold, while the dial comes in matte black or porcelain white; those who opt for the stainless-steel model can swap an alligator leather strap for a steel bracelet with a double-folding clasp. gc Bucherer, Königsallee 26, 40212 Düsseldorf, +49 (0)211 328083, bucherer.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 74

WHATEVER THE WEATHER Windsor’s Hybrid Outdoor collection for men is an innovative concept that fuses sportswear and tailoring, and unites distinctive cuts and functionality. The brand has a long history of working with the best fabrics; its parent company was founded in German textile centre Bielefeld in 1889 and it took on the Windsor name in 1960. Its current combination of simple textures, discreet details and classic elements results in high quality jackets and coats made of a wool and nylon blend, such as Coat Bruno (€799, pictured). STORY TIME Every season Scotch & Soda likes to present its own original take on the world and, for autumn/winter 2016/17, the Amsterdam-based fashion label made its debut at New York Fashion Week with a collection entitled Wondrous Wanderers. Taking inspiration from different ages and diverse places such as Tibet and Fløen, a small Norwegian village, it is divided into four ‘stories’ based on different characters: the Soulful Soul, the Rooted Roamers, the Uncrowned Queen and the Silent Fighter. Scotch & Soda takes elements from each of the different places where these tales are centred and reinvents them into something new: in one story a Scandinavian look is completed with neoprene and rubber details, while kimono prints, chinoiserie and sequin patterns mingle in another. The result is a collection characterised by an exuberant play of colour and texture, with patterns and embroideries aplenty. gc Scotch & Soda, Neustrasse 42, 40213 Düsseldorf, +49 (0)211 8632 9690, scotch-soda.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 72

Semi- Couture, in 2010. ‘My style is couture on a celestial level. Fashion means presenting one’s self with confidence and making a statement through one’s appearance,’ he says. His intensely feminine autumn/winter 2016/17 collection conjures up elements of the Orient Express luxury train. ‘No black, no grey,’ the designer explains. ‘The nuances harmonise in a timelessly beautiful romance – fango [brown], dark blue and the loveliest wool, plus white in combination with winter coral, light beige and watered-down orange.’ Rath’s striking aesthetic is glamorous, timeless and elegant, and his classic pieces feature sophisticated modern elements and details. ‘We create collages of grand extravagant themes, with a generous helping of

emotion,’ he says. ‘We live for classics with a twist, and love the special finesse of fashion, the art of designing great cuts and working with best-quality materials.’ Rath’s office overlooks the river Rhine and the gardens of the Oberkassel district, and he uses the city throughout his designs – even taking inspiration from his morning run alongside the canal, which offers views of the shop windows along Königsallee. ‘We live in a wonderful and magical place and I feel very much attached to it,’ he says. ‘A charming mix of urbanity and Rhenish serenity, the city provides ideal opportunities for us as entrepreneurs.’ Designer Tina Miyake has also capitalised on the city’s dynamic culture. She started her

eponymous label in 2004 and blends fashion knitwear with vintage kimonos. ‘My style is minimal, with strong colours and detailing’, she says. Miyake is inspired by Dries Van Noten and Ann Demeulemeester – members of the renowned Antwerp Six group of designers, who graduated from Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1980 and 1981 and took the fashion world by storm. She says her work process is organic and fluid. ‘It’s like trial and error. I think every designer must invent their own style – I am very inspired by material and the way it flows. It’s like I’m a sculptor.’ Shape and structure are very important to Miyake – an interesting combination when working with soft wool and rigid silk. This season, her silk dresses with apron-like belts Above (both): Tina Miyake autumn/winter 2016/17

Each area of the city has its own unique qualities – chic, hip, artistic and diverse are real statement pieces, while her asymmetric merino dress is a transitional essential. Another designer thriving in Düsseldorf’s fashion culture is Stella Achenbach, who interned with Marchesa in New York before launching Stella Achenbach Identity Goods, her own handbag and accessories label.

Achenbach favours clean silhouettes combined with elaborate details and is inspired by ‘nature, people, art and everyday life.’ She has also been heavily influenced by the work of designers Hussein Chalayan and the late Alexander McQueen, as showcased in her limited-edition Island Edition range which features leather etui ornamental cases in three different colours with exchangeable pockets. This style can also be seen in her new docking bag collection, which plays with the combination of man-made and machine-made techniques. While Rath is poetic about Düsseldorf’s charm, Achenbach is pragmatic about its reputation as a fashion capital. ‘It is all about

the numbers. Advertising happens in Berlin, but the sales go down in Düsseldorf,’ she says. This business-like approach to the city’s reputation is evident in enterprises such as Fashion Net Düsseldorf, a citywide network of fashion industry experts, designers, exhibition operators, universities and retailers. The collective works to maintain the city’s status as a premier destination for exhibitors, buyers, customers, opinion leaders, creatives, investors and entrepreneurs alike. Fashion Net Düsseldorf says that there is no single identifying style in Düsseldorf. Each area of the city has its own unique

qualities, from the famously chic Königsallee to districts such as Altstadt, Carlsplatz and Flingern, which are hip and artistic, and boutiques ranging from Beyond Studios to K Fashion Clothing. Diversity is key to design and to the city, explains Radermacher, adding that heightened colour brings a particular energy to the scene. ‘Fashion here is creative, immersive and interactive,’ he says. Rath agrees that Düsseldorf has style. ‘The people of Düsseldorf are utterly trendy, love brands and have a very good sense for quality and that certain something,’ he observes. ‘It’s here where fashion is shown, experienced and lived’ Above (from top): Louis Vuitton is one of the high-end names found on Düsseldorf’s prestigious Königsallee shopping street; the Gallery Düsseldorf fashion fair

Gant largely defned the preppy sportswear look and it continues to give new edge to this classic style. Creative director Matthew Wood talks to Sally McIlhone about the brand’s inspiring vision

ant is a truly international brand, in terms of both its history and its reach. It was founded in 1949 in the US city of New Haven by Ukranian-born Berl Gantmacher, whose American-raised sons Marty and Elliott spurred it to success. After 65 years in the fashion industry, Gant now has its head office in Sweden, a British creative director, Matthew Wood, and stores in 70 markets across the world, including four in Düsseldorf. Gant has refined its output into three key lines for men and women: Gant Diamond G, Gant Originals and Gant Rugger. We caught up with Wood to discuss the latest collections, the brand’s legacy and his plans for the future. Having trained on London’s Savile Row and held positions designing menswear

for brands from Hardy Amies and Nigel Hall to DKNY, Matthew Wood is extremely accomplished at creating clothing with flair. In March this year, Gant’s chief executive Patrik Nilsson announced that Wood had joined his newly appointed dream team, which would help Gant reach its goal of becoming ‘the world’s leading lifestyle brand by 2020’. Gant has a clear aesthetic that has been built upon since its foundation. Its preppy all-American look began with the company’s first shirts and can be seen for autumn/winter 2016/17 in striped polo-neck jumpers combined with green leather bomber jackets for men, and in blazers and skirts cut just above the knee for women. ‘I am just building upon many of the ideas that the original Gant brothers started; thinking of modern consumers and what they

need, then inspiring the team to create new, exciting products to delight them,’ says Wood. He is quick to dismiss suggestions that it might be a big challenge to produce new collections and drive the company forward while also retaining Gant’s signature look. ‘We are lucky,’ he says. ‘Many brands don’t have a stylistic vision to inspire them but Gant does.’ The fact that this vision continues to provide inspiration more than six decades after its inception is testament to its power and appeal. ‘Gant is a brand with an incredible history and archive of ideas. There’s nothing which can’t be the source of inspiration,’ says Wood. Gant’s Diamond G collection modernises key pieces from the Gant archives by making them work for both daytime and evening. ‘Gant Diamond G is all about desk-to-dinner

pieces, allowing the customer to live a hectic and modern lifestyle without having to stop and think about outfit changes during the day,’ says Wood. ‘It is very much about sophisticated on-duty and off-duty clothing and versatile tailoring. The collection blurs the boundaries between business-casual and leisure.’ By providing wardrobe solutions for today’s timepoor professionals, Gant keeps itself relevant in the crowded retail industry. Gant has become synonymous with key pieces for seasonal wardrobes. For autumn/ winter 2016/17, the directional Gant Rugger line offers a timeless men’s leather jacket and its women’s collection presents a new take on the tuxedo. How does Gant continue to get it just right with such classic pieces? ‘It’s a continuous process,’ Wood

explains. ‘Being innovative is one of our core values and a part of who we are.’ Elliott Gant, Berl Gantmacher’s son, has described the label as ‘tastefully different’ and this still rings true. Wood notes that the company’s credo is ‘never stop learning’. ‘We continue being innovative and always strive to exceed our customers’ expectations while still staying true to our heritage,’ he says. With its trio of winning lines, Gant has extended its appeal beyond a single customer group. Wood explains that the Gant Originals customer wears casual American sportswear: colourful classics and essentials interpreted in a modern way. ‘He or she is sporty,’ he says, ‘leads an active lifestyle and often does outdoor activities.’ The Gant Diamond G customer, he continues, is the sophisticated urbanite ‘who is all about subtle and effortless elegance. This customer is confident and stylish in their attire and he or she loves to

travel and experience the world.’ The Gant Rugger line’s core customers are ‘all about the progressive alternative within American sportswear. The style of the Rugger customer could be described as effortlessly cool, and he or she is always wearing the on-trend pieces with an edge.’ If you only buy one Gant item this season, Wood recommends the Gant Tech Prep shirts. They are, he says, ‘made out of fully breathable and durable fabric while still maintaining the soft Gant touch.’ This versatile product is one of many in the latest collection that are guaranteed to become bestsellers. It may even become an archive piece that will one day inspire Gant collections of the future – and there will certainly be many more to come. Gant’s functional yet sophisticated wardrobe essentials have genuinely global appeal and this is a label that people can’t help but love to wear

CAFÉ SOCIETY Düsseldorf has a wide range of cafés, the ideal places for rest, refreshment and people-watching. Katie Muxworthy picks some of the best

There is a thriving café culture in Düsseldorf’s lively, bustling centre. Coffee shops line the cobbled streets of the historic old town, and the city’s modern delis are equally alluring. Coffee was introduced into Germany in the late 17th century, when coffeehouses began to become popular across Europe, and Germany has since become a nation of coffee lovers, well known for the tradition of kaffee und kuchen: a cup of coffee accompanied by cake. Kaffee und kuchen makes the perfect excuse to pause for afternoon refreshment, just like the locals. Perhaps you’re a coffee connoisseur who can instantly taste the difference between the various classic roasts. Maybe you prefer a refreshing cup of exotic herbal tea, or are looking for a more substantial snack or lunch. There is a café to suit you in Düsseldorf; so relax, enjoy, and watch the world go by. globalblue.com

CAFÉ HÜFTGOLD Expect to spot the city’s hip crowd hanging out at Café Hüftgold. Freshly brewed coffee, home-baked cakes and a tranquil atmosphere make it no surprise that this café is popular among locals. Stop here for a bite to eat at lunch time and select from a range of sandwiches and ‘toasties’ on organic rye bread. Delicious German flammkuchen (savoury tarts) also feature on the menu. The open-plan dining area has an array of charmingly mismatched wooden tables and chairs. The café’s tempting selection of flavoured teas includes green tea with rose petals, and hibiscus fruit tea with papaya, pineapple and mango. Café Hüftgold stays open until 10pm at the weekend. The cakes and desserts at Patisserie Passion are as beautiful to look at as they are delicious to taste. Guests can watch the bakers hard at work in the open-plan kitchen as they relax in the café; all products here are made using the finest ingredients, including top-quality fruit purees and chocolate. There are delicious, healthy breakfasts on the menu, including a sharing platter for two, and wraps and quiches at lunchtime, but it’s the elegant patisserie, including petits fours, eclairs and French-style macaroons, that really takes centre stage. Enjoy your selection with a warming drink from the extensive choice of coffees, teas and hot chocolate. If you have a little extra time to spare, baking and chocolate-making courses are available in the patisserie. SUGARBIRD CUPCAKES

Annette Leurs started her cupcake business in 2008 and her confections have certainly proved popular: she introduced the cupcake café to Düsseldorf, and there are now two branches of Sugarbird Cupcakes in the city, plus a third in the neighbouring town of Dormagen. Her recipes are less sweet and sugary than the usual American-style cupcake and draw on lighter ingredients such as fruit; varieties on offer change throughout the week and might include tiramisu, strawberry cheesecake or chocolate-caramel, with vegan options also available. The café’s pink and white décor is as sweet as the cakes on offer. Sugarbird Cupcakes, Rethelstrasse 153, 40237 Düsseldorf, +49 (0)211 9807 7410, sugarbird-cupcakes.de

44: City Of Style

52: Front Runner

Stella Achenbach。 Stella Achenbach Identity
