I
n 2016, the city of Düsseldorf unveiled the new Wehrhahn metro line. The line, which has six stations and two miles of tunnels, was developed over 15 years as part of an €843m collaboration between the government, architects and artists. The objective? To build a subway that was completely free from advertisements and create a site where art and architecture unite. With architects, artists and engineers working together from the very beginning of
the project, the Wehrhahn is a powerful example of how style and function can coexist – and highlights how deeply the arts are embedded into Düsseldorf’s DNA. ‘We wanted an interdisciplinary project,’ explains Ulla Lux from Kulturamtes der Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf, the city’s office for culture. Other stipulations for the project included spaciousness, clarity, easy orientation and as much light as possible
in the stations. The latter is particularly pertinent considering that the very nature of a subway is dark and underground. Was it an easy decision to keep the line free of advertising? Yes, says Lux, ‘because it really should be a statement about art.’ A look back at Düsseldorf’s history helps to explain how the groundbreaking concept behind the Wehrhahn was successfully realised. Düsseldorf’s investment in the arts can be

Gerhard Richter, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol. With 101 works, its Paul Klee collection is one of Germany’s largest collections of pieces by the Swiss-German artist. Kiefernstrasse, a street in the Flingern-Süd district, has been a focal point for alternative culture since the mid 1980s and has an eclectic, multicultural demographic. Houses are covered in stunning street art, expressing views and opinions through vibrantly coloured graffiti, murals and drawings. Now primarily a quiet, residential street, Kiefernstrasse is a popular destination for visitors and an ideal place to take an interesting stroll.
The Rheinuferpromenade is another example of how style and function coexist in the city. This beautiful waterside stretch was redeveloped in the 1990s, when two tunnels were created beneath the area to relocate a major traffic artery underground. Now traffic-free, the idyllic esplanade is lined with cafés and restaurants, and locals and visitors alike come here to relax. The most recent addition to the Rheinuferpromenade is the Kunst im Tunnel (KIT), built between the two road tunnels in 2007. Architecture firm Fritschi Stahl Baum has designed a space that functions both as a meeting place and a

traced back as far as 1762, when the city’s Kunstakademie Düsseldorf art school was founded by Lambert Krahe. As Lux explains, the academy has ‘a long tradition of working to combine art with the city.’ A visit to Düsseldorf offers myriad opportunities to experience many different forms of art. The city’s Kunstsammlung NordrheinWestfalen art collection is notable for its exceptional selection of 20th- and 21stcentury art, housed across three separate locations. The main K20 museum building at Grabbeplatz has paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations by artists including Henri Matisse,

THE CITY’S MULTIFACETED ART SCENE FEATURES MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES, AND ALSO MOULDS THE PHYSICAL LANDSCAPE
focal point for contemporary art. The entrance to the KIT is a glass pavilion facing the river Rhine, which offers visitors the perfect view of the water from its beautiful café terrace. The underground exhibition space follows an elliptical arc that is 140 metres long and runs parallel to the water, with pieces of art displayed along the bare concrete. The space hosts between four and six exhibitions during the year, with a focus on young,
emerging artists, curated by KIT’s artistic director Gertrud Peters. In addition to KIT, visitors keen to discover the city’s up-and-coming artists should head to the Von Fraunberg Art Gallery on Luisenstrasse. A showroom for young artists, the gallery often features the work of graduates from Kunstakademie Düsseldorf alongside international names. Galerie Conrads on Lindenstrasse, founded in 1992, presents the work of
new and mid-career artists and seeks to create a dialogue across different generations, cultures and methodologies of artwork. Düsseldorf’s art scene is clearly multifaceted; it is populated with museums and galleries that represent the cream of established and emerging artists on the one hand, and is influential in moulding the physical landscape of the city on the other. Perhaps the final word should be reserved for art collectors Rosi and Rudolf Dahmen who last year transformed their home into a contemporary space where they curate private shows. The couple say that ‘the boundary between private and public disappears in the building’ and are living proof that in the city of Düsseldorf, art is everywhere

The brand creates unique items with a focus on sustainably sourced exotic skins and leather, and precious stones. Visitors can choose from jewellery creations or handbags in crocodile or stingray skin, ostrich leather or hand-painted snake skin. A Cuckoo Moment was founded in 2005 by Lia Fallschessel, who ensures that the raw materials used are fair trade and sourced from non-endangered animals. Pieces are made in Germany, Italy and Spain, and finished in the brand’s Düsseldorf workshop.

Form And Function :28 من أحدث التط ّورات في Rheinferpromenadeمساحة الشكل والوظيفة التي أنشئت سنة 2007بين من المعارض إلى المترو فاألنفاق والمتاحف ،تجد الف ّن االبتكاري النفقين .ص ّممت شركة الهندسة Fritschi Stahl Baumمساح ًة المزدهر في ّ كل زاوية من زوايا مدينة دوسلدورف المفعمة بالحياة ،لتكون نقطة التقاء وارتكاز للف ّن المعاصر .مدخل KITهو عبارة تقرير Beth Druce عن جناح زجاجي قبالة نهر ،Rhineيمنح الز ّوار إطاللة ممتازة إلى المياه من على ت ّراس مقهاه الجميل .أ ّما المعرض تحت األرض، فيتّخذ شكل ٍ سنة ،2016كشفت مدينة دوسلدورف النقاب عن خ ّط مترو قوس بيضاوي يمت ّد على طول 140مترا ً ويحاذي ست محطّات وثالث كيلومترات من المياه ،في حين تُعرض القطع الفنيّة على الجدران اإلسمنتيّة .Wehrhahnيتألّف من ّ األنفاق،استغرق تشييده 15سنة كجزء من مشروع مشترك بين كل عام ما بين أربعة إلى ستّة معارض، العارية .يُنظّم في الصالة ّ الحكومة ومهندسين وف ّنانين بقيمة 843مليون يورو .والهدف منه مع التركيز على الف ّنانين الشباب الصاعدين وذلك بإشراف المديرة بناء مترو أنفاق خا ٍل تماماً من اإلعالنات وخلق مساحة يتوح ّد فيها الفنيّة .Gertrud Peters الف ّن والهندسة المعماريّة .تعاون المهندسون المعماريّون والف ّنانون باإلضافة إلى ،KITال ب ّد للز ّوار الراغبين باستكشاف والمهندسون الفنيّون في ما بينهم منذ بداية المشروع فاستحال جه إلى معرض Von المواهب الصاعدة في المدينة التو ّ Wehrhahnمثاالً ممتازا ً عن توافق الشكل والوظيفة وسلّط الضوء Fraunbergفي شارع .Luisenstrasseيشكّل هذا المعرض صالة ٍ على تجذّر الفنون في جينات دوسلدورف. عرض للف ّنانين الشباب وغالباً ما يقدّم أعمال خريجي أكاديميّة تقول Ulla Luxمن المركز الثقافي في المدينة Kunstakademie Düsseldorfإلى جانب أسماء عالميّة. :Kulturamtes der Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf فتأسس سنة أ ّما معرض Conradsفي شارع ّ ،Lindenstrasse ومتوسطي الخبرة كما يحاول "أردنا مشروعاً متعدّد الوظائف" .ومن اشتراطات المشروع األخرى 1992ويعرض أعمال ف ّنانين جدد ّ المساحات الواسعة ووضوح الرؤية وسهولة التو ّجه وأكبر قدر ممكن خلق حوار بين مختلف أجيال الف ّن وثقافاته ومنهجيّاته. من الضوء في المحطّات .والشرط األخير غاية في األهميّة نظرا ً ال ريب أ ّن المجال الف ّني في دوسلدورف متعدّد األوجه؛ لطبيعة المترو المظلمة وتحت األرض .لكن تكثر فيه المتاحف والمعارض التي تعرض أروع أعمال الف ّنانين هل كان من السهل إبقاء الخ ّط خا ٍل من اإلعالنات؟ تجيب :Luxالمخضرمين والصاعدين من جهة ويلعب دورا ً في صقل شكل "نعم ،ألنّه يجب في الحقيقة أن يكون تعبيرا ً عن الف ّن". المدينة من جهة أخرى .ربّما يجدر أن يكون مسك الختام مع هواة بالعودة إلى تاريخ دوسلدورف ،يمكن أن تفهم كيف تجميع األعمال الفنيّة Rosiو Rudolf Dahmenاللّذين ح ّوال ت ّم تطبيق مفهوم Wehrhahnالخارج عن المألوف بنجاح. منزلهما العام الماضي إلى مساحة عصريّة يستضيفون فيها العروض يعود اهتمام دوسلدورف بالفنون إلى سنة 1762عندما الخاصة .يقول الزوجان" :تختفي الحدود بين الخاص والعام في ّ أٍّ ّسس Lambert Kraheكليّة الفنون Kunstakademie كل زاوية من زوايا حي على ّأن الف ّن موجود في ّ البناء" وهما مثال ّ .Düsseldorfعلى ح ّد قول " :Luxعملت األكاديم ّية مط ّوالً على دوسلدورف. دمج الف ّن بالمدينة". وفي زيارة إلى دوسلدورف ،تجد مروحة من الخيارات When You Shop The World, لتختبر أشكاالً متعدّدة من الف ّن .مجموعة Kunstsammlung Shop Tax Free :45 Nordrhein-Westfalenشهيرة بتشكيلتها المميّزة من ف ّن عندما تتس ّوق حول العالم ،تس ّوق من دون دفع الضريبة القرنين 20و 21وتتوزّع على ثالثة مواقع مختلفة .أ ّما المبنى الرئيسي لمتحف K20في ساحة ،Grabbeplatzفيض ّم لوحات ورسومات ومنحوتات وأعماالً لف ّنانين على غرار Henri Matisseتقدّم لك غلوبل بلو Global Blueخدمة التس ّوق من دون و Gerhard Richterو Pablo Picassoو.Andy Warhol دفع الضريبة Tax Freeلتدّخر المال لدى تس ّوقك في أكثر من ويشمل أيضاً مجموعة Paul Kleeالمؤلّفة من 101قطعة وهي 300,000متجر في أبرز مناطق التس ّوق حول العالم. أكبر مجموعة قطع في ألمانيا للف ّنان السويسري األلماني. فل َم ال تنض ّم إلى الـ 26مليون مسافر الذين يتس ّوقون من دون دفع منذ منتصف الثمانينات ،شكّل شارع Kiefernstrasseفي كل سنة؟ ما عليك إال الضريبة من خالل غلوبل بلو ّ Global Blue مقاطعة ،Flingern-Südنقطة ارتكاز للثقافة البديلة وسكّانه أن تبحث عن النجمة الزرقاء أو تسأل عن غلوبل بلو Global Blue إنتقائيّون ومتعدّدو الثقافات .منازله مكس ّوة بف ّن األرصفة الذي وتتبع خطواتنا السهلة. يعبّر عن وجهات نظ ٍر وآراء من خالل الغرافيتي ولوحات جدرانيّة ورسومات مفعمة باأللوان الحيويّة .يشكّل شارع .1 Kiefernstrasseتس ّوق اليوم حيّاً سكنيّاً هادئاً ووجه ًة يقصدها الز ّوار ويحلو التن ّزه فيها. الخاص أينما تس ّوقت ،أطلب الحصول على طلب استرداد الضريبة ّ تجسد توافق التصميم مع الوظيفة بغلوبل بلو Global Blueوتذكّر أن تحتفظ باإليصاالت. من األماكن األخرى التي ّ في المدينة هو منتزه .Rheinferpromenadeأُعيد إحياء هذه المنطقة الجميلة المحاذية للماء في التسعينات عندما ُحفر نفقان .2أطلب
