Privat, a small, innovative jewellery and accessory brand based in Düsseldorf, is the brainchild of designers Christiane Wink and Astrid Eckert, who came together to collaborate on breaking new ground in jewellery making. Privat combines different materials such as silver with high-tech plastic or leather, in designs that are often unconventional. All Privat pieces are created in the on-site workshop and intricately crafted by hand; standouts include a golden bullet, a sailing boat pendant and a silver astronaut. rd Privat, Ackerstrasse 215, 40235 Düsseldorf, +49 (0)211 966 1727, privat215.de

Calvin Klein goes back to its unisex roots with its new gender-neutral fragrance CK2. Fragrance was revolutionised in 1994 when Calvin Klein introduced CK One, the first scent marketed to both men and woman; now a new generation can enjoy its own shared fragrance. Light and sensual CK2 (100ml, €67.40) opens with the unexpected spice of wasabi. Middle note accents such as wet cobblestones, orris and rose add freshness, while hints of jasmine, vetiver, sandalwood and musk create depth. Always ahead of the interactive game, Calvin Klein has created a hashtag, #the2ofus, so customers can share their experiences through social media. rd

onventional wisdom has it that the world’s best chocolate comes from Belgium. But try telling that to the chocolatiers at Konditorei Heinemann in Düsseldorf. Locals ‒ and visitors with a sweet tooth ‒ have been enjoying its Champagne truffles since 1968. These are just one of a wide array of delicious Konditorei Heinemann specialities, including baumkuchen, or tree cake, named for its rings which resemble those of a tree trunk, and herrentorte, or men’s cake, a layered, bitter chocolate creation which the company invented. You can pick up chocolate beetles in May and, during asparagus season, enjoy white chocolate asparagus spears. Who needs real vegetables? The company has been experimenting with chocolate and cake since 1932, so the team has had plenty of time to practise: no one more so than Heinz-Richard Heinemann, its creative head. He is the son of Hermann and Johanna Heinemann, who launched the company from their then small bakery in nearby Mönchengladbach. Heinemann recalls how he would help in the bakery, the store or the café after school. Whatever he did, he says ‘it was always connected to work – but never stressful. It was always playful and beautiful.’

As a small boy, coming home to a world of chocolate must have been heavenly for Heinneman, though he was careful to ration his own children’s intake. When they were three years old he started to give them a small piece of dark chocolate a couple of times a week. He says it was an education in appreciating cocoa quality rather than indulging in quantity. Not that Heinemann himself didn’t pay his dues in terms of education: he was apprenticed to master confectioner Robert Mojonnier in Lausanne for three years; the kind of hard but rewarding learning process that, he notes, is rarely followed today, especially in his field. That old-school attitude feeds into Konditorei Heinemann’s approach to making its confections. In fact, more than half of the recipes it uses are unchanged since the early

20th century and most are as secret today as they were then. ‘It’s important to me that we are not expensive,’ says Heinemann. He points out that, per 100 grammes, Konditorei Heinemann’s prices are little different to supermarket chocolate prices. The important difference, though, is that Konditorei Heinemann’s products are handmade from fresh ingredients. ‘We process unadulterated food,’ he says, pointing out that the company does not use the additives that are often included to extend the shelf life of other foods. ‘We don’t use industrially prefabricated commodities. The large amount of fruit, such as cherries, strawberries and raspberries, that we need, we buy from farmers and freeze ourselves. Apples

for our apple pies are freshly peeled each day. We make all our chocolates and truffles freshly each day, too.’ The customers, he says, tend to eat them very fresh as well. German chancellors, Helmuts Schmidt and Kohl among them, were said to be devoted to the company’s Champagne truffles. After a five-year study and 57,000 samples, the Club des Croqueurs de Chocolat du Japon actually named them the best in the world. Pope Benedict XVI preferred Heinemann’s stollen, or fruit bread. There are several branches of Konditorei Heinemann in Düsseldorf but it is far from being the city’s only purveyor of fine chocolates and cakes. Take, for example, Otto Bittner, which celebrated its 110th anniversary in 2015. This company also offers a delicious line

of Champagne truffles, and its nutty black diamond truffle and Jan Wellem chocolate balls are among its biggest hits. The Mailänder (Milanese) marzipan cake and Schwarzwälder kirschtorte (Black Forest gateau, made with cherries) are among its spectacular creations. Those who want to sample the hard stuff should visit the Gut & Gerne chocolate shop, which offers 200 varieties of what it calls its ‘chocolate treasures’, from top international brands including Domori, Valrhona and Amedei, and those such as Maglio and Dolfin which are appreciated by connoisseurs. But then there are plenty of connoisseurs in Düsseldorf. Perhaps this is small wonder given that, much like afternoon tea in England, kaffee und kuchen – coffee with cake or chocolate – is a much-loved ritual in Germany. It’s an indulgent combination that offers the twin hit of both sugar and caffeine: which is exactly what you need to get you back on your feet and off to the next confectioner’s

THE PLACE TO BE Vibrant Unterbilk is a must-visit area for anyone exploring D端sseldorf. Ginger Rose Clark takes a tour

52 | F E AT U R E S

As you move away from the riverfront, the scenery starts to change. Buildings designed by renowned contemporary architects are replaced with an older residential setting. Through the centre of it all runs Lorettostrasse, a tree-lined avenue that gives a taste of the wide variety of boutiques and cosy eateries you can find in the area. Locals rave about the sesame gelato from Gelateria, an ice-cream parlour that was around long before Unterbilk became fashionable. Uwe van Afferden is a menswear shop with a focus on retro style, stocking labels from Nudie Jeans to Schott, while Modlord caters to those with a taste for British fashion. Also on Lorettostrasse is Bittersüss & Edelweiss, a must-visit for chocolate lovers. Opened by chocolatier Kathrin Lohaus in September 2015, the store sells artisanal chocolates, handmade with high-quality ingredients. Lohaus is quick to highlight what makes the neighbourhood stand out.

ocated to the south of Düsseldorf’s city centre, next to the river Rhine, Unterbilk is an up-and-coming area. Over the past few decades, the neighbourhood has seen rapid evolution. Once home to factory workers, it became a student hub in the 1990s and is now a fashionable area popular with young families. The newly developed Medienhafen harbour area on the edge of Unterbilk is a great place to start exploring the neighbourhood. A walk along the Rheinuferpromenade – Rhine Promenade – allows you to take in the ultramodern buildings and stunning riverfront vistas. The Medienhafen also offers plenty of opportunities for eating out, from the Michelin-starred Berens am Kai restaurant to more casual burger joints. For commanding views over the Rhine, head to Pebble’s Terrace at the Hyatt Regency Düsseldorf hotel, which serves grilled food and refreshing drinks throughout the summer months.

The history of Unterbilk is still visible today, although its former warehouses and factories, once hives of industrial activity, have been transformed into exciting new retail spaces ‘Unterbilk has changed a lot over the past few years. Its independent retailers are a beacon of individuality, shops which one can’t necessarily find in the city centre any more,’ she explains. A short walk through the neighbourhood is all it takes to see that Unterbilk is indeed a haven for small, local businesses and that Bittersüss & Edelweiss isn’t the only one showing an independent spirit. Wander just a little way from Lorettostrasse and you’ll find Wandel Antik, crammed to the brim with antique treasures. Less than five minutes’ walk away, Hab & Gut will satisfy the needs of those with a penchant for interior décor, offering ceramics, candles, stationery and homewares. The history of Unterbilk is still visible today, although the warehouses and factories, once hives of industrial activity, no longer serve their original purpose. Instead, they’ve been transformed into exciting new retail spaces such as Taste Greece. Here, founders Nadia Challah and Giorgos Pachiadakis personally source quality foods from Greek producers. The finest olive oils, wild capers from the Cyclades, Greek mountain teas and aromatic wild fig jam are just some of the delectable products on offer. The team’s main focus is on wholesale Above (from top): Bittersüss and Edelweiss chocolate truffles; Wandel Antik; Hab & Gut

business, but the shop also opens to the public twice a week and occasionally hosts events. Challah and Pachiadakis know Unterbilk inside out, having been residents for over 20 years. They’ve seen the area become the buzzing place it is today and know exactly what their clients are looking for. ‘Our warehouse is very nice and the layout is authentic and full of love. Many people have had enough of over-stylised shops; they prefer something simple, authentic and cosy,’ they explain. ‘Here at Taste Greece, you get the feeling you’re among friends.’ A few doors down is ELA Selected Clothing, a mainstay of Düsseldorf fashion.

A short walk through the neighbourhood is all it takes to show that Unterbilk is a haven for small, local businesses Founded by Gabriela Holscher-Di Marco in 1977, it’s a concept store with a rich history – famous bands such as Kraftwerk and Die Toten Hosen have all sourced outfits here. The store moved to Unterbilk in 2011, where HolscherDi Marco found ‘the ideal place for her vision’ in the Liesegang-Fabrik, a former factory that she chose for ‘its close proximity to the many artists, designers, creatives working in the area, as well as the cafés, restaurants, galleries and boutiques.’ Inside the sleek white warehouse space, customers will find collections by independent designers as well as established labels, from

ultra-cool Danish label Henrik Vibskov to Holscher-Di Marco’s own line. Away from the mainstream atmosphere of the city centre, Unterbilk is a thriving neighbourhood. Its status as a fashionable area may be recently acquired, but businesses have been quietly congregating here for years and the area is filled with things to discover. It’s hardly surprising then that, according to Nadia Challah, ‘It’s not just local residents that go out and shop in the district; people from all over the city now come to Unterbilk.’ A trip to Düsseldorf isn’t complete without a visit to this vibrant area

TABLE TALK Düsseldorf’s fast food scene has undergone a gourmet makeover, as Isabella Redmond Styles discovers

Step into one of Düsseldorf’s favourite restaurants and you could be forgiven for thinking that you’ve taken a trip across the Atlantic. Many of the city’s most popular eateries are looking stateside for inspiration, while making the most of regional ingredients. Düsseldorf’s adventurous chefs have travelled the globe in search of the secrets behind the perfect hamburger, generally acknowledged as an American invention despite the German-sounding name, and the results are certainly tasty. You may prefer a classic burger made with locally reared dry-aged beef and served with fresh toppings sourced from the surrounding region, or something a little more exotic, reimagined with inventive fusion favours. Burgers aren’t the only north American delicacies on ofer; barbecue and Canadian poutine are also on the menu. In Düsseldorf fast food is the new fne dining. globalblue.com

FRITTENWERK Frittenwerk is committed to making fast food that’s as fresh as it is delicious. The restaurant works closely with local suppliers and thoughtful touches like homemade dips and fresh herb garnishes have locals coming back again and again. The centrally located beer garden is also an excellent spot in which to pass a warm summer evening. The house speciality here is poutine, a Canadian dish with a base of French fries and cheese curds topped with a gravy style

sauce. The classic Quebec and Montreal versions are impressively authentic. Other favourites include the barbecue pulled pork poutine served with homemade coleslaw and the Tijuana street fries, which are garlic fries with homemade guacamole, sour cream and tomatoes. BUTCH BECKER

Butch Becker founders Eldad SchĂśnfeld and Christopher Schlechter wanted to create a perfect burger in which you can taste every ingredient. Having travelled the world studying the art of the patty, the duo established Butch Becker with the premise that everything should be both fresh and handmade. Enjoy an appetite-whetting cocktail such as a Ginger Punch or Fruit Cup before tucking into mini ribs with a honey jasmine glaze, or light and aromatic Vietnamese summer rolls. The deli burgers, which are highly recommended, include the Surf & Turf, which combines shrimp, avocado and a mango chilli chutney, and Into The Blue, a patty topped with Roquefort and pear poached in port wine. What’s Beef is known and loved locally for its top quality, gastronomic approach to the classic burger and fries. Diners can expect premium ingredients such as locally reared beef, while crispy beef salami is used in place of bacon. Soft, buttery buns are baked in house and tasty toppings include organic ketchup, pickles, locally grown lettuce, tomato and onions. Owner Selim Varol sampled over 150 burgers from around the world before settling on his perfect version for What’s Beef and believes that a mouthful of the restaurant’s patties will transport diners to New York. GRINDHOUSE Grindhouse was inspired by the impressive burgers on offer in London and New York. Ingredients are paramount, including freshly baked buns and the region’s best homegrown beef and visitors

are encouraged to customise their burgers. Start with the delicious wasabi shrimp or crispy onion rings, served with a sweet chilli mayo. Then move on to one of the dry-aged beefburgers, such as the Smokey BBQ which is topped with caramelised onions, cheddar, smoked bacon and

barbecue sauce. Discerning eaters should try one of the entrecôte gourmet burgers, which include the aptly named Truffle Heaven. Grindhouse, Bankstrasse 83, 40476 Düsseldorf, +49 (0)211 5145 5606, grindhouseburgers.de

TRANSLATIONS РУССКИЙ ПЕРЕВОД 42: Sweet Heaven

50: The Place To Be

在更为吸睛的蛋糕系列中,则包括 Mailänder(即米兰)杏仁蛋糕与Schwarzwälder kirschtorte(黑森林樱桃奶油蛋糕)。

50: The Place To Be
