LET THERE BE LIGHT German lighting and interior-design brand Tobias Grau has opened a showroom in the newly built TurmCarrée building in the heart of Frankfurt, its seventh in the country. here is something very comforting about the sound of bangles clinking together on a wrist, a melody of glorious silver and golden notes. And is there anything that conveys an impression of being well travelled better than exotic jewels and one-of-a-kind statement pieces that are guaranteed to start a conversation? In what was possibly a sign that the German minimalist normcore movement is finally over, bold jewellery and crafted accessories made strong statements on the autumn/winter 2015/16 catwalks.

The normcore aesthetic is extremely low-key, stripped back and anti-style. It recently became a recognised unisex trend and is characterised by a simplified, ‘normal’ sense of style, with a distinct lack of detail, allowing wearers to blend into the crowd rather than stand out from it.

decorated with 300,000 sequins. The real sense of change was noted in the finer details.

Built over time, jewellery collections can tell a wonderfully unique story, and the tale for autumn/winter 2015/16 is loud and proud.

When it comes to the over-arching trends for the season, the spirit of spring/summer 2015 lives on in florals and delicate, feminine fabrics, with Valentino, Marni and Alexander McQueen all offering incredibly ethereal collections. It’s only natural that chunky and oversized pieces should balance this out. Trend forecaster extraordinaire Miuccia Prada took inspiration from several decades for her latest

Miu Miu collection, notably the 1960s through to the 90s, although it was the glitter and glam of the 80s that was most eye-catching.

Oversized earrings looked like giant daisies with bright petals in yellow, white, red and pink. Every other pair was a drop design, with a crystal-encrusted stone hanging from the flower. Matching necklaces completed the floral look.

The Marni woman always exudes an air of adventure and for this season multi-stone earrings and sculptural bracelets in natural hues told of far-flung travels. At Givenchy, multiple septum rings and jewelled faux piercings were created by make-up artist Pat McGrath for each model. Although delicate pearls adorned their faces, this was a celebration of the strength of women portrayed through facial embellishment and the overall look was dramatic and aggressive. There was also a rebellious spirit at Balenciaga where designer Alexander Wang combined the traditional house codes with perhaps his most dramatic of visions for the brand so far. Ears were covered with multiple layers of pearl earrings, and decorative crystal-encrusted

pieces on skirts and shoes added a finishing touch of opulence.

Off the catwalk, jewellery retail has also been rejuvenated. According to the trend and innovation experts at research firm Stylus, ‘interactive technology, both in-store and online, is adding seductive new layers of personalisation and education to jewellery retailing’. The high-tech and high-touch worlds are colliding, and the in-store experience is one that simply cannot be matched online.

German watchmaker and jeweller Thomas Sabo says that life is too short for boring jewellery. A trip to one of his stores is a must for anyone who is a jewellery enthusiast and for whom this mantra rings true. His Karma beads and charms can be collected and pieces can be built up, with new charms added each season that can be used to create endless variations.

For autumn/winter 2015/16 the brand is also offering statement bangles with floral central motifs, and oversized cocktail rings with jewels

in winter berry shades.

Another German brand offering its own take on maximalist jewellery is Niessing. The Phoenix collection is an architectural delight in miniature form. Signifying eternally repeating cycles, numerous slender oval discs are connected to produce a necklace and a bracelet, available in gold or platinum. The Papyr necklace is another sculptural gem, and gives the impression of an elaborately folded golden paper chain.

Trends in jewellery can go from minimalist and muted one season to overt and flamboyant the next, and both international designers and home-grown German brands offer their own interpretations of these looks. As the finishing touch, it’s all about how these trend-led jewellery pieces are matched with outfits. laus Schäcke admits that Frankfurt is ‘not much of a fashion city – lots of people go to the big designer stores’, he says, with a hint of disappointment. Even so, plenty of others go to his store, too: Kleidoskop, an oasis of new design talent in FrankfurtMitte. Admittedly it’s not for everyone. When Schäcke and his partner Dragana Papric opened their frst store 20 years ago – a smaller space, still open and now dedicated to endof-line pieces – it only sold clothing in either black or white. This approach lasted fve years before, as Schäcke puts it, ‘We discovered some colour – although I would say we still sell more black than anything. We’ve always liked clothes that emphasise silhouette and cut, rather than pattern and colour.’

The main store, now fve years old, is no less ascetic in its style. It is ftted out in minimalistic white, black and grey, a suitably rigorous approach that the two have favoured since the start and which, in fact, they have in their own home as well. ‘Back then people tended to think it was strange and cold,’ says Schäcke.

‘But now, of course, you see that simple style in shops everywhere – it creates a focus on the actual products.’

And at Kleidoskop, this is where one wants the focus to be. While the store stocks a few of the better known high-end intellectual

designer brands – MM6 by Maison Margiela and Costume National, for example – it has gained a reputation for its independent ethos, hunting down less well-established designers to showcase in the store. It curates and develops, rather than just buys.

Schäcke cites 8PM and Esgivien, both young brands from Italy, for example, with other ones to watch such as Cigno Nero and Vic Matié.

He and Papric prefer to buy European-made clothes – for the quality – and would like to buy more from young German designers, ‘but they tend to have a very strong style and aren’t so easy to sell’, he laughs. ‘It’s hard to explain why some clothes are interesting if you can’t see it yourself.’ At the moment, bestsellers include thin leather jackets, trousers and shirts – if it sounds like a more masculine style, Schäcke insists that ‘we have plenty of pretty dresses, too.’

‘We spend a lot of our time trying to fnd something diferent,’ he adds. ‘That means a lot of time dealing with agencies – they come to us with new lines they think we might like – scouring the internet, at trade shows, seeing what people are wearing. But the results mean that the store is diferent, too.

We think it’s important, especially in today’s retail environment, to focus on those smaller brands, the unusual. That’s what a discerning customer is after now: something they can’t get everywhere else. We’re drawn to the shape, the materials, the way it hangs.’

That is why Kleidoskop sells only womenswear. While Schäcke says he would like to sell menswear one day – and it might be included in a third store they are hoping to open in two or three years – he says it’s important to be able to try before you buy, and he’s not a sample size. ‘It’s funny, but it is

really important to see and feel how a garment looks when it’s actually on, the way it hangs.

And no menswear samples ft me,’ he says. ‘But Dragana is more a size small, so it’s easy for her to try everything on.’

Taking such an independent stance makes things harder in many ways. Both Schäcke and Papric have backgrounds in advertising, which they left when her agency closed and, frankly, they both just felt like doing something new. One might think that their expertise in branding and marketing would have come in useful. But Schäcke says that approaches to marketing have moved on as rapidly as fashion retail has. Part of their skill as buyers and retailers is just keeping up to speed.

‘I think we started out in the business right at the end of what was a golden era for fashion retail,’ Schäcke jokes. ‘Lots of people in the industry talk about how fantastic business was Above: one of Kleidoskop’s typically muted displays

Practicality and simplicity lie at the heart of this evolution, ensuring that Adidas’s core values remain strong, whether the target is the street or the sports hall. The brand is proud of its ‘commitment to quality and passion for sport’, which ensures that every Adidas collection is tailored to provide comfort and performance wherever it is being worn.

With this in mind, the brand’s decision to work with some of the world’s most respected fashion designers is less surprising; Yohji Yamamoto, for instance, has worked with Adidas on its Y-3 line for more than a decade.

Yamamoto is considered to be a master tailor, pushing fashion boundaries since the 1970s, and his bold, experimental designs for Adidas are no exception. The designer’s most celebrated silhouettes, including the Qasa, combine high-performance composite fabrics with vibrant uppers.

n recent years, Adidas has been leading the charge when it comes to blurring the lines between sportswear and fashion. The German label has always been a leading supplier of sports footwear and clothing, but it is its passion for innovation that has made the brand an internationally recognised industry pioneer.

Adidas’s fashion credentials are impressive; recent collaborators include heavyweights such as Stella McCartney, Yohji Yamamoto, Raf Simons and Rick Owens, as well as Kolor’s Junichi Abe and hip-hop mogul Kanye West.

Each has brought his or her own signature style to the partnership, which, combined with Adidas’s sportswear expertise, has produced something special. By incorporating the techniques and materials that each designer would use on the catwalk, Adidas’s pieces have been elevated from the sportswear sphere to become desirable garments in their own right.

The success of its Yamamoto collaboration has encouraged Adidas to take more risks with other avant-garde design talents. Rick Owens’ designs for the brand are considered the most experimental creations yet, incorporating clean monotone colour palettes and strong, fuid lines reminiscent of modern architecture. Owens’ work has attracted a new generation of sneaker fans who appreciate form and function as well as fashion.

Adidas has long championed the creation of garments that transcend traditional boundaries of what sportswear should look like. Stella McCartney is the designer who has done the most to help efect this change, especially in womenswear. Her design aesthetic is feminine, romantic and fattering. Fabrics that let the body breathe and move with ease are combined with striking, visually stimulating patterns to great efect.

It’s obvious that Adidas is very proud of its commitment to quality and passion for sport Fashion often takes inspiration from the past, and Adidas has plenty of its own history to mine. The brand’s most renowned style, the Superstar, has become a timeless classic, beloved by sneaker enthusiasts and fashion editors alike. Created for playing basketball, the style was launched in the late 1960s and popularised by NBA legend Kareem AbdulJabbar. Its versatile design, suitable for wear both on and of court, was revolutionary.

Since then, the shoe has been reinvented several times over and even featured in a 1986 song by American hip-hop group Run-DMC called My Adidas. The members of the group were known for wearing only Adidas, and went on to make history by becoming the frst musical group to be ofcially endorsed by a sportswear brand.

The Superstar is surprisingly robust with a hardened shell-toe to provide additional protection. A design revamp in the 1980s brought the shoe to the attention of the skateboarding community, who were soon hooked by its tough exterior and the durability of its rubber outsole. The style has been reinvented again recently; Pharrell Williams teamed up with Adidas to create the Supercolor, an exclusive version of the Superstar available in 50 colours.

The Stan Smith is another classic style that

has been adopted by the fashion community.

Designed for its namesake, tennis player Stan Smith, to wear on court, the shoe has remained virtually unchanged since its release in the 1970s. The shoe’s understated aesthetic makes it a universal style staple which complements bold directional outfts as well as simpler everyday ensembles. Both it and the Superstar have been spotted on the front row at various fashion weeks.

The story of the Superstar and the Stan Smith demonstrates perfectly the way sportswear has evolved to become part of the luxury fashion sector. Sneakers are now regarded as an everyday wardrobe staple, and as Adidas continues to collaborate with the world’s fnest fashion designers its clothing is acquiring a similar cachet, proving once and for all that style and substance aren’t mutually exclusive adidas.com

Cofee is Germany’s favourite drink, more popular than water and even than beer.

German adults drink an average of 165 litres of cofee per year, according to the most recent fgures from the Deutscher Kafeeverband (German Cofee Association).

Cofee was introduced into Germany in the late 17th century, when cofeehouses began to become popular across Europe. The beverage on ofer at the time would have been very diferent to that served after German cofee lover Melitta Bentz invented the modern drip cofeemaker in 1908. Bentz’s innovative paper flter made a groundsfree, less bitter cup of cofee; variations on her invention remain in use today.

‫متاجر ‪ Kleidoskop‬هي إحد– أكث التاجر الستقلّة تيّزا ً ف‬ ‫فرانكفورت‪ ،‬تعتمد سياسة دعم الص ّممي الصاعدين ومقاربة‬ ‫“كلّم قلّت اللوان استحالت القطعة أجمل”‪ ،‬تقرير ‪Josh Sims‬‬ ‫متأسفاً بعض الشء‪“ :‬ليست‬ ‫يقول ‪ّ Klaus Schäcke‬‬ ‫فرانكفورت بدينة تتّبع الوضة – يذهب كثيون إل متاجر‬ ‫الص ّممي البارزين‪ ”.‬لكن بالرغم من ذلك‪ ،‬يذهب كثٌ آخرون‬ ‫إل متجره أيضاً‪ ،Kleidoskop :‬وهو واحة لواهب التصميم‬ ‫الجديدة ف فرانكفورت‪ ،‬منطقة ‪ .Mitte‬وباعتاف الجميع‪ ،‬ليس‬ ‫متجرا ً للجميع‪ .‬افتتح ‪ Schäcke‬وشيكته ‪Dragana Papric‬‬ ‫مم هو عليه اليوم‬ ‫متجرهم ال ّول منذ عشين سنة‪ ،‬كان أصغر ّ‬ ‫ويبيع ملبس باللّون البيض أو السود ل غي‪ .‬استم ّرت هذه‬ ‫القاربة خمس سنوات قبل أن‪ ،‬عل ح ّد قول ‪“ Schäcke‬اكتشفنا‬ ‫أي شء‬ ‫بعض اللوان – لكن ما زلنا نبيع ملبس سوداء أكث من ّ‬ ‫آخر‪ .‬لطالا فضّ لنا اللبس التي تركّز عل الشكل والتصميم أكث‬ ‫منه عل النقش واللوان‪ ”.‬ما زال التجر قائاً حتّى اليوم ويبيع‬ ‫القطع التبقّية من مجموعات معيّنة‪.‬‬ ‫يقل أسلوبه‬ ‫أنشئ التجر الساس منذ خمس سنوات ول ّ‬
