FLOAT ON AIR When renowned Frankfurt jeweller Biegel set out to create a new collection, it looked to none other than pearl aficionado Saskia Diez and her husband for the design. Diez, whose collections are stocked in some of the most prestigious stores around the

world, is a German native who loves working with skilled local craftsmen on her pieces. The Oyster ring consists of one thin sheet of gold, which the Biegel goldsmiths have used to carefully envelop a delicate pearl. The gem is suspended in the metal, with no other fastenings or fittings, giving the classic combination

MILESTONE MOMENT Marc O’Polo celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Founded in Sweden in 1967, the brand set out to create clothing from natural fabrics, starting with cotton shirts. This original offering rapidly grew to encompass much more. Half a century later, the brand spans the Marc O’Polo Casual main lines for both men and women, Marc O’Polo Denim, shoe and accessory lines as well as a Junior collection for children and even homeware. With its checked motif, this autumn/winter 2017/18 coat (€299.90) makes a stylish addition to this season’s wardrobe, along with logo T-shirts, knitwear and denim. grc Marc O’Polo, Steinweg 9, 60313 Frankfurt, +49 (0)69 2199 7026, marc-o-polo.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 51

For his final collection for Jil Sander, creative director Rodolfo Paglialunga has explored colour and texture. The striking silhouettes feature plenty of volume, flowing shapes and tailoring, as seen in statement coats, oversized jackets, ribbed dresses, cashmere knits and metallic lurex. Neutral shades, deep reds, browns and yellows work harmoniously together. This focus on shape and tone can be seen in elegant accessories such as the Penta bag, pictured here in the small version (from Save up to 14.5% by shopping tax free, see page 56

NEW BEGINNINGS Salvatore Ferragamo’s latest ready-to-wear collection for men marks the start of a new chapter for the brand. For autumn/winter 2017/18, recently appointed design director Guillaume Meilland continues to celebrate the traditional Italian craftsmanship with which the brand is synonymous, while creating a thoroughly modern masculine aesthetic. The collection plays with techniques, fabrics and proportions, so that what appear to be heavy wool pieces are, in fact, supremely light. Cashmere knits are adorned with bold patterns, classic peacoats and flight jackets are reworked in innovative fabrics, and leather bags are oversized for a statement look. rre Salvatore Ferragamo, Goethestrasse 2, 60313 Frankfurt, +49 (0)69 920 0730, ferragamo.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 51

STEP IN TIME This year’s Baselworld, the world’s largest watch and jewellery trade fair, saw the launch of the newest additions to Omega’s Seamaster Aqua Terra ladies’ collection. Equipped with one of the world’s most advanced mechanical movements, the new models are available in three different sizes – 28mm, 34mm and 38mm – and come in a variety of finishes, including stainless steel and 18-carat red gold, with diamond-set bezels. Incorporating a beautiful mother-of-pearl dial, diamond hour markers and a diamondpaved bezel, the Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M Master Co-Axial Chronometer (pictured, €17,300), is a stunning feat of watchmaking. rp Omega, Goetheplatz 5, 60313 Frankfurt, +49 (0)69 9288 1957, omegawatches.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 51

ermany has a long and illustrious history of design, from baroque to Bauhaus and beyond. While it may have been overshadowed in recent years by its neighbours to the north in Scandinavia, it is currently home to a host of brands with a bold, minimalist aesthetic and intelligent, forward-looking ideas, covering every area of contemporary life from interiors to accessories. Porsche has created some of the world’s sleekest cars, so it’s no surprise that its design-focused offshoot – called,

Germany has a long history of design, from baroque to Bauhaus is underway in Frankfurt, and is due to be completed in 2018. It’s not all about cars and architecture, however. The brand’s roster of covetable products covers everything from trainers and sunglasses to hi-tech must-haves, each representing shape and function in perfect harmony. Among the latter are the recently launched high-performance Book One convertible computer; the latest Mate smartphone in partnership with Chinese brand Huawei, which has an integrated Leica camera; and the sleek 911 Bluetooth soundbar. Above (clockwise from top left): the Porsche Design Tower in Miami; Nomos Aqua series watch; A Lange & Söhne craftsmanship; Poggenpohl kitchen design

straightforwardly, Porsche Design – has garnered praise worldwide since it was launched in 1972 thanks to its pioneering and ambitious approach. Among its most recent ventures is a new addition to Miami’s skyline, the Porsche Design Tower. This striking 60-storey building offers 132 luxury apartments whose interiors reference the parent brand’s covetable cars with features such as carbon-fibre kitchens and gullwing doors. Instead of a basement car park, the structure has special lifts to whisk owners’ supercars up to their own integrated garage in the sky, which is separated from the living area by a glass wall. A second Porsche Design Tower

S H O P | 37

A passion for technology also sets Poggenpohl apart. Founded in 1892, it is Germany’s oldest kitchen-focused brand, but has always looked to the future. It has previously offered a fully connected kitchen – that is, a kitchen where surfaces slide and morph into different shapes at the touch of a button; a table gliding seamlessly into a drinks bar, complete with temperature-control wine cellars; and touchscreen cooking systems. Recent innovations include chrome-plated lacquered doors for a glossy, futuristic aesthetic in this most functional of rooms. That focus on innovation carries into how Germany’s watchmakers approach their craft. The small mountain town of Glashütte, in the state of Saxony, has been known for highquality watch production since the mid 19th century. It’s an appreciation of history married with an eye for the thoroughly modern that informs Nomos, a brand founded in the area globalblue.com

in 1990. Those two tenets are maintained by a team of local craftspeople – some of them the fifth generation to work in watchmaking – and a group of cutting-edge designers in Berlin. Innovation is the unifying thread: the brand was the first to produce mechanical watches with the ‘Made in Glashütte’ label. That sensibility is evident in the visually impactful designs; the new water-resistant Aqua series features vivid coral and cerulean shades, a blast of bold colour that contrasts with the cool minimalism for which the brand has become known. Glashütte is also the base for the fine timepiece house A Lange & Söhne, founded in 1845 and producer of some of the world’s most exceptional watches – again focused on mechanical movements over quartz. With prices that run into the five, and sometimes six, figures, it’s no surprise that the brand’s roster of models offer an array of complications – essentially, features that go beyond the display of hours, minutes and seconds. The 1815 Chronograph, for instance, offers a masterclass in tradition and pioneering techniques. The inky black dial, for example, looks like a slab of ebony but is actually solid silver, while the movements inside combine a standard chronograph movement (that facility to measure specific periods of time, like a stopwatch), with a pulsometer (employed by doctors to measure the heartbeat). All of this bold modernity is created entirely by hand, proof that the enterprising spirit of German design hasn’t forgotten the importance of the human touch along the way

When it comes to multibrand fashion stores, Frankfurt’s carefully curated boutiques are among the best in Europe, as Ruairidh Pritchard discovers 58 65

hile Berlin is often seen as the epicentre of the German fashion scene, the nation is home to a number of bustling cities, each with its own style and personality, as well as its own vibrant fashion scene. Frankfurt is a prime example, and its fashion credentials are nowhere more evident than in its roster of world-class multibrand boutiques. Carrying some of the biggest and best names in fashion and accessories, alongside new and local brands, these spaces are scattered all over the city, and make Frankfurt’s fashion scene one of the best in Germany. ‘Frankfurt is one of the most important cities in Germany,’ says Kerstin Görling.

Above: Hayashi store

‘We have the stock exchange and the airport. The people in Frankfurt are as open minded and fashionable as they are travelled. At the same time, the city has a huge music and art scene, as well as lots of business people. It’s a great contrast!’ It’s this mix of people that marks Frankfurt out as one of Germany’s most dynamic cities, and it’s one of the reasons Görling chose it as home for Hayashi, one of Frankfurt’s most exciting and eclectic boutiques. The store is home to a wealth of international brands including Marni, MSGM, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Helmut Lang and Isabel Marant Étoile, and this year marks its 10th anniversary. Over the past decade Hayashi has garnered an international clientele, partly due to Görling’s own impressive online following, which is testament to her own love of style. As she explains, ‘We have a passion for fashion and travelling, and throughout the year we visit the world’s biggest fashion cities such

as Paris and Milan to find the latest designer brands. We always want to surprise our customers with a colourful and eclectic mixture of designers. So every piece in our store is hand- and heart-picked.’ Joining Hayashi in the line-up of Frankfurt’s leading multibrand boutiques is Spazio Concept Store. Founded by Inge Winterberg in 2004, Spazio was one of Frankfurt’s first concept stores, merging fashion, lifestyle and home products under one roof. ‘We have a large selection of different themes, from fashion to accessories and interiors, as well as

gifts and gadgets,’ explains Winterberg. ‘There are always many things to discover.’ Alongside Spazio’s strong roster of international brands, including Tara Jarmon, Tiger of Sweden, Joseph and By Malene Birger, the store is also home to German labels, such as Anni Carlsson and Wet by Ines Schneider, offering visitors a diverse range of European fashion. The store’s homeware section is one the best in the city, with glassware, ceramics and home fragrance all chosen by Winterberg herself, who comments, ‘Our large selection of products, both international and German, aims to show a complete look, from fashion to living and lifestyle.’ While newer concept-led stores are bringing a fresh look to retail in the city, some of Frankfurt’s longest standing fashion institutions are still leading the way in luxury shopping. August Pfüller was established in 1878, and remains one of Frankfurt’s leading stores. Specialising in the best of international womenswear, the store is where the city’s bestglobalblue.com

dressed residents turn for big-name designer labels such as Alexander Wang, Céline, Christopher Kane, Moschino and Valentino. Another long-standing Frankfurt fashion institution is Bailly Diehl. Opened in 1974, it has evolved into one of the city’s leading places for discovering the best trend-led fashion and accessories, and today has 15 branches in and around the Frankfurt area. Stocking an impressive selection of menswear and womenswear, the store prides itself on its array of German brands, which include Drykorn, Hannes Roether and George Gina & Lucy, a hugely successful bag brand started by Nicole Bailly, daughter of Bailly Diehl founder Michael Bailly. With a mix of boutiques, cutting-edge concept stores, long-standing high-fashion emporiums and trend-led shops, all full of international and German fashion labels, Frankfurt’s diverse and eclectic fashion scene proves that shopping in smaller cities can rival Europe’s fashion capitals

JAGUAR The latest fragrance from world-renowned car manufacturer Jaguar, Pace Accelerate is an invigorating scent for men. Conceived in honour of the recently launched Jaguar F-Pace family sports car, it brings together powerful, heady notes of bergamot and mandarin with a surge of cardamom, while cooling notes of juniper berry, nutmeg, coriander and white pepper evoke the feel of the wind in your hair. The sleek bottle is enhanced with touches of royal blue, silver and red, and embossed with a lattice design inspired by Jaguar’s radiator grille.

STANLEY DIAMOND

PHOTO: STEVE HERUD

A recent addition to Frankfurt’s dining scene, Stanley Diamond offers classic European dishes in a refined environment. Founded by restaurateurs David and James Ardinast and Oskar Melzer, the eatery has a sleek interior, with pale pink concrete and rich green Indian marble as well as dark wood and specially upholstered chairs by E15. The menu, conceived by head chef Alex Nixdorf, revisits unfashionable recipes including Leipziger allerlei, a German vegetable stew with crayfish; the French classic bouillabaisse; and rum baba.

Bonechina is not your typical bar; it’s more like an art space that serves cocktails, located in a baroque building that dates back to 1747. In the centre of the room is a porcelain origami elephant, which also serves as a tonic-water fountain. Rather than being served drinks by a bartender, Bonechina’s hosts or the customers themselves prepare tipples from a menu of classics using home-made ingredients. The richly tiled interior was created by Studio Aberja, with Marc Rammelmüller coming on board to co-design the central elephant using 3D software, bringing tech and traditional design together. The space is open from Tuesday to Thursday evenings and can host 20 people, making this an intimate, one-of-a-kind experience you won’t find anywhere else. РУССКИЙ ПЕРЕВОД 34: Make It So Сделано в Германии

PHOTO: NOMOS GLASHÜTTE

Но в этой стране globalblue.ru

В Spazio собраны сильные мировые бренды, в частности Tara Jarmon, Tiger of Sweden, Joseph и By Malene Birger.

56: When You Shop The World, Shop Tax Free Tax Free
