REACH FOR THE SKY Stars have always played a special part in the covetable jewellery designs of H Stern – not surprisingly, perhaps, given that the eponymous founder’s family name means ‘star’ in German. To celebrate its 70th year, the Brazilian

jeweller has reinvented its favourite motif to create the Genesis collection, which includes starry pendants, earrings and rings in 18-carat noble gold set with diamonds in shades ranging from light cognac to off-white. These Pearls of Genesis earrings feature the spiky points of H Stern’s updated stars – which

Tsatsas, a leather bag and accessory label with a contemporary approach, opened its first store in late 2015. The interior design was developed by founders Esther Schulze-Tsatsas and Dimitrios Tsatsas, who opted for a structured space divided

into distinct areas. In keeping with the brand’s clean design language, simple materials such as marble sourced from the latter’s native country, Greece, help to maintain the focus on the products on display. Established in 2012, Tsatsas creates exquisite bags

STEP FORWARD

This season, Diesel has introduced a luxury denim line. Named Slow Indigo, the collection consists of jeans that have been made of premium denim fabric using artisanal techniques. Each pair of jeans – including the pictured Thommer style (€279) – is made entirely in Italy and has been crafted at a measured pace for a high-quality end result. Since being founded in 1978, Diesel has been a keen innovator in the field of fashion and Slow Indigo is no exception: this collection purposefully puts the luxury into denim. grc Diesel, Rathenauplatz 1-3, 60313 Frankfurt, +49 (0)69 9288 3160, diesel.com

Ekn has chosen Frankfurt as the place to open its first store, a compact showcase of its boots, sneakers, sandals and accessories. The brand’s products are made in Portugal in fair and ecological ways: vegetable tanning and organic processes are used instead of harmful chemicals, for example. This attention to the environment has been carried through to the store itself, developed by design studio Philipp Mainzer. LED lights and white cubes made from recycled wood help form a cool, modern setting for the ecological footwear brand. grc Ekn, Danziger Platz 2-4, 60314 Frankfurt, eknfootwear.com

SNAP IT UP Leica has unveiled a new model, an update on the Leica T touchscreen-operated compact camera which was introduced in 2014. The Leica TL offers improved autofocus, and with 32GB has twice the internal memory of its predecessor. The Leica TL app, with which the camera can be paired, offers further assets such as a remote function and the possibility to share images by email or on social networks. In a choice of three colours – silver, black and

titanium – the compact body, which is crafted from a single piece of aluminium, makes the Leica TL a tasteful option for photography enthusiasts. grc

POWER COUPLE Ferrari and Hublot have teamed up again in 2017 with a new edition of a collaboration that first saw light in 2011. Powered by Hublot’s own Unico movement, the new Big Bang Ferrari draws on the designs of the car manufacturer. The minute counter and date window resemble a tachometer, and the different strap styles echo the look of Ferrari upholstery. A fusion of two aesthetics, the watch is finished with the iconic logos of both brands: the Prancing Horse logo stands proudly above the number six on the dial, while the Hublot logo adorns the crown. Available in stores from March 2017, the Big Bang Ferrari comes in three limited-edition styles in either titanium (pictured, €25,900), King Gold or carbon. grc Hublot, Goethestrasse 4-8, 60313 Frankfurt, +49 (0)69 1338 5326, hublot.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 51

A SPECIAL CASE Unveiled last year, 19 Degree is Tumi’s first aluminium luggage collection. The metal exteriors of the cases are decorated with a raised flowing pattern, while the lining is embossed with a diamond motif. Each case has a reinforced frame with the addition of die-cast corner caps, two snap closures for carry-on styles – or three for check-in models – as well as Tumi’s signature features such as integrated TSA locks, Tumi Tracer bag-tracking technology and the patented X-Brace 45 telescoping handle. The collection debuted with aluminium styles in silver or matte black, as well as polycarbonate models in silver, black or copper, but keep an eye out for newer colourways including a stylish rose gold option. Cutting Loose This season has seen menswear designers abandon the rigid rules of tailoring in favour of a more modern approach, as Ruairidh Pritchard discovers

58 64

60

When it comes to menswear, traditional tailoring and design principles have always reigned supreme. Even the most adventurous designers have stayed true to the timehonoured conventions of menswear design when crafting their collections – until this season, that is. As lives change, so do fashions, and leading menswear brands from across the world are adapting their offerings to suit our modern lives. There’s been a noticeable change of direction on the catwalks of London, Paris and Milan this season, with a clear shift away from rigidity towards a more casual approach and a relaxing of fashion rules. And while this is perhaps not unusual considering the roster of emerging menswear designers in their Left: Ermenegildo Zegna spring/summer 2017

36 | F E AT U R E S

20s and 30s who are dominating the scene globally, it’s a change that can also be seen on the shopping streets of Germany’s menswear capital, Frankfurt. It’s an acknowledged retail destination when it comes to impeccable menswear, so it comes as no surprise that the city’s best boutiques for men are offering pieces that embrace this loosening of the rules. Recently, some of the most renowned menswear stores on Frankfurt’s famed Goethestrasse have welcomed collections with a distinctly more contemporary turn. This season Italian superbrand Prada, for example, delivered a menswear collection inspired by the idea of ‘the voyager’, with playful prints, utilitystyle pockets, oversized backpacks, neon-bright sandals, and leggings in place of trousers all pointing towards a new, less rigid menswear dress code. Gucci, one of the fashion labels that pioneered the now classic menswear look, also took the notion of travel as a key influence this season. Menswear’s man of the moment, creative director Alessandro Michele, translated themes of voyage and adventure into a melange of colour, texture, pattern and print to signal the brand’s new and more wearable direction. Ermenegildo Zegna’s long-standing traditions have positioned the label at the pinnacle of Italian tailoring excellence. Above (from top): Prada; Gucci, both spring/summer 2017

Having started life as one of Italy’s finest textile producers, it is now the go-to brand for those who seek the perfect suit, making the Ermenegildo Zegna store on Goethestrasse a haven for men in Frankfurt looking to own a piece of fine Italian tailoring. But alongside its continued commitment to classic craft, style and excellence, the brand is also committed to remaining at the forefront of men’s fashion. Season after season, the collections display a shift towards a more modern conception of man – subtle twists take its tailoring into a less formal arena. For spring/summer 2017, this means an adventurous play on classic cuts, and a creative use of fabrics and texture that elevates the traditional aspects of classic menswear. The biggest contemporary twists include jackets cut longer with softer shoulders, trouser legs cut

the confident look of a collection made with a sound knowledge of traditional sartorial rules, but focused on pieces that are genuinely wearable day after day. The inclusion of sneakers and backpacks further reinforces the impression that this more-than-a-centuryold brand is designing firmly for the present day, offering a collection that seamlessly ties together high-quality materials and craftsmanship to create contemporary clothes for the contemporary man. With brands such as Prada, Gucci, Ermenegildo Zegna and Berluti all ushering new concepts of menswear design into what has traditionally been a tailoring-led stronghold, it’s clear that the menswear landscape – whether across Frankfurt’s shopping district or globally – has never been as exciting, or as compatible with modern life, as it is today

wider and less rigidly, and short-sleeved shirts with revere collars. The overall effect is a nod towards the relaxed chic of the Italian Riviera, rather than the stricter sartorial rules of Rome. Rounding out Frankfurt’s newly modernised menswear landscape is Berluti, whose flagship store faces the Ermenegildo Zegna boutique on Goethestrasse. Berluti’s luxury creations have been the epitome of French masculine design since the label launched in 1895 as a shoemaker in Paris. The brand’s roster has grown to include a full ready-to-wear menswear collection, and for spring/summer this, too, has turned a distinctly contemporary corner. This season’s offering includes light woollen sweatshirts, knitted bomber jackets with suede sleeves, unstructured leather jackets and relaxed denim chambray. It has

or the ultra-efficient German fashion customer, being able to purchase complete looks for each new season from top international brands under one roof is a must. AppelrathCüpper meets this need with aplomb, and offers perfect style solutions for the time-poor modern woman in 13 stores across Germany as well as via its online shop, appelrath.com. It has become a go-to for the country’s most chic citizens. Purchasing manager Barbara Moers feels that AppelrathCüpper has become such a trusted brand among local and international customers largely because of its history and its 58 64

focus. ‘AppelrathCüpper was founded in 1882,’ she says. ‘It started off as a women’s apparel store, and that is what it remains today.’ Its first store opened in Aachen, with a second subsequently launched in Cologne. Now the brand can be found in cities across Germany, including Hamburg and Kiel in the north, Frankfurt and Mannheim in the south, and Essen, Bonn and Dortmund in the west. To ensure maximum footfall, there are three stores in key shopping centres (at Hamburg Astertal, Karlsruhe and Main-Tanus-Zentrum near Frankfurt) and 10 on popular shopping streets. ‘AppelrathCüpper has become the leading Above: the shoe department in the basement of AppelrathCüpper Frankfurt

multi-label retailer of women’s fashion in the upper mainstream and premium segment,’ Moers says, proudly reciting a list of the top brands available in-store. These include Boss, Burberry, Marc Cain, Max Mara, Tommy Hilfiger and Gant. ‘The selection of brands is always based on customer requirements with regard to quality, fit and trendiness, which are vital for us.’ Late last year, AppelrathCüpper unveiled its new shoe concept, offering a range of premium brands such as AGL (Attilio Giusti Leombruni), Superga and Peter Kaiser. Customers can now also enjoy an AppelrathCüpper service that will dress them from head to toe. ‘In nine AppelrathCüpper stores we have integrated the new shoe concept with existing fashion departments,’ says Moers, explaining that this development shows how AppelrathCüpper is dedicated to providing ‘the perfectly matching shoe for our premium customer’. Moers adds that ‘the concept also includes new furniture, which was specially designed for the new shoe

area at AppelrathCüpper, creating a modern, emotive ambiance.’ For the Frankfurt store, the brand has gone one better, opening a complete shoe department in its boutique on the Zeil. The 300-squaremetre space presents customers with everything from sneakers to high heels. It offers high-end labels such as AGL, DKNY and Furla, as well as the fun, eye-catching diffusion line Love Moschino and ever-popular items from Ugg.

In addition it stocks well-crafted bags from German favourite Liebeskind. One of the reasons AppelrathCüpper remains so popular is because its team has such a clear idea of its audience. When asked about the AppelrathCüpper woman, Moers replies that she is middle to upper class, focused on high-quality products, trendiness and a good fit. ‘She expects a high standard of service,’ Moers adds, ‘and expert advice while shopping our premium brands. She likes to buy fashionable items and basics at an attractive price-performance ratio. As a fan of AppelrathCüpper she is very loyal.’ It’s easy to see why. On top of its wellcurated selection of footwear and clothing, AppelrathCüpper also stocks its own accessories and cashmere lines along with exclusive items from Rena Marx. Moers says that the company prides itself on ‘a high standard in service and the outstanding expertise of our fashion advisers’, making it an ideal place to visit during a German shopping trip. ‘Our fashion advisers take on the role of

a host,’ Moers explains, adding that they have extensive expertise and are extremely fashion conscious. But on top of an impressive sense of style, the AppelrathCüpper staff recognise the need to connect with customers and earn their trust in order to be able to recommend key newseason products. ‘Our customer assistance and advice relies on an interpersonal relationship, taking care of individual needs,’ Moers says. So what will AppelrathCüpper’s fashion advisers be recommending to their clients for the new season? ‘Key pieces for spring/summer 2017 are a trench coat for the start of the season, in navy or beige; a striped blouse for the preppy look; tops with cut-outs or off-the-shoulder details; cropped trousers in light colours; a handbag in silver or pink; and perfect matching sneakers in navy and white,’ says Moers. With such a wealth of style knowledge gathered over 135 years, AppelrathCüpper is sure to impress even the most seasoned of customers. Take your time to explore the new shoe areas and craft your new-season wardrobe with the help of the in-store experts

WELLENDORFF Family-run Wellendorff, founded in 1893, is known for its innovative jewellery. This includes rings such as the pictured style from the Angel’s Wings collection, which is inspired by a true love story. The exquisite gold ring features white enamel details, and the angel engraved on the inner surface stands for joy and protection. As with all of Wellendorff’s rings, it is finished with the company’s signature diamond-crowned W. Such beautiful creations showcase the brand’s high-precision craftsmanship and its commitment to inspiring design.
