Boss has partnered with Porsche on a menswear capsule collection for autumn/ winter 2019/20 with a campaign fronted by prize-winning racing driver Mark Webber. The values and expertise of both German brands blend seamlessly in this collaborative project. Rosenthal’s TAC collection, named after Walter Gropius’s seminal architectural firm The Architects Collaborative, first saw the light of day in 1969 and went on to become an iconic collection of porcelain with a minimal aesthetic reminiscent of the Bauhaus movement. In light of the movement’s 100th anniversary in 2019, Rosenthal has created a limited-edition series of tableware. The new TAC Stripes 2.0 design (pictured) revisits Gropius’s original hand-drawn stripe motif and pairs it with references to the Rosenthal am Rothbühl porcelain factory. Horses conjure up a sense of power, energy and nobility
H
orses have long been revered. As early as the Iron Age they were held in high regard. Winged horses appear in mythology across the world from the Greek Pegasus to the Chinese Tianma and, to this day, the horseshoe remains a symbol of luck in many countries. This longstanding fascination carries through to the fashion industry. Brand logos alone are evidence enough: from a horse in full gallop to variations on the horseshoe, equine-themed logos are common among fashion brands. The logo for Ralph Lauren’s Polo line depicts a horseback polo rider, mallet raised high, mid-swing; created in the 1950s, the Coach logo features a horse and carriage; the Aigner logo cleverly fuses the letter A with a horseshoe. In other instances, equestrian influences have been used as design features in products that have gone on to gain iconic status. Gucci is one example. The Italian fashion house’s horsebit loafers, first introduced in 1953,
have become a signature product, revisited from one season to another. Dior’s Saddle bag has similarly become a cult piece. Originally introduced under the aegis of John Galliano when he was creative director of the brand, the bag, which takes its name from its saddle shape, has once again emerged as an ‘It’ bag in the past year. Dior has reinvented the Saddle bag in various guises, embroidered and embellished, in leather or canvas. Hermès is also globally recognised for its equine-themed logo, a horse-drawn phaeton (light open carriage), based on a work by Alfred de Dreux, and its associations with horses run much deeper than the symbolic. Hermès began as a harness and bridle maker for the wealthy, before expanding into saddlery, with a clientele that included Napoleon III and Tsar Nicholas II. As cars began to overtake horses as a means of transport in the early 20th century, Emile-Maurice Hermès, grandson of founder Thierry Hermès, decided to turn his attention

to leather goods. Since then, Hermès has established its credentials as one of the world’s most prestigious luxury brands – and retains its ties with equestrian sports. It still creates state-of-the-art riding gear: master saddler Laurent Goblet, who retires this year after having worked some 40 years for the brand, has designed and created saddles used by some of the world’s best riders. The brand’s saddles, bridles and more are scrupulously made in its ateliers in France, drawing on savoir faire that has been handed down for decades. The Hermès connection to its heritage culminates in the annual Saut Hermès au Grand Palais, a prestigious showjumping competition. Brands that don’t have fundamental equestrian links have also chosen the spirit and energy of the horse to shape their identity. Longchamp, founded in 1948, was named after the famous Parisian Hippodrome de Longchamp racecourse that founder Jean Cassegrain used to walk past each day, which
also happened to be the site of a windmill. Since Cassegrain is a French term for miller, Cassegrain drew a link between his name, the mill, the hippodrome and, by extension, the galloping horse, which was adopted as the brand’s logo and is now recognised worldwide as the Longchamp motif. A couple of decades later, the Aigner brand was founded in Munich, in the 1960s period when the city was marked by a sense of freedom and energy, both perfectly encapsulated by the horse. Aigner’s logo was thus designed to resemble an upside-down horseshoe and the brand organised the Aigner Renntage, horse racing days which took place just outside of Munich. For autumn/winter 2019/20 the brand draws on this heritage: golden-hued hardware takes the form of a horse’s head on this season’s hero products. Examples include the fastening mechanism for the Epona bag and the decorative chain attachments on the Grazia model.

Escada, founded in 1978, can also credit a defining element of its identity to the world of horses. While photographing one of their first collections at a racetrack, founders Margaretha and Wolfgang Ley saw a racehorse named Escada: they were so inspired by its energy that they decided to name their brand after it. Recently appointed creative director Niall Sloan chose to revisit this defining moment last season, using it as a starting point for his debut collection for the brand. Horses remain an integral part of the DNA of fashion houses with ties to the equestrian world, and it’s no surprise that the image of the horse has also been adopted much more widely. Reinventing and incorporating equestrian themes and symbols certainly makes for memorable motifs. While horses no longer play as prominent a part in daily life as they once did, these beautiful animals, loved around the world, still serve as a rich source of inspiration for brands.
