NOTEWORTHY NAMES The Swedish fashion scene is taking its place on the world stage and Gothenburg is home to many leading brands. Emma Johnson highlights the designers and labels you need to know
A
fter a period of regeneration and investment, Gothenburg is now highly regarded as a style destination. Sweden’s secondlargest city has firmly established its own brand of Scandi cool, seen in its independent coffee bars, Michelin-starred restaurants, cutting-edge art exhibitions and vibrant emerging designer scene. Gothenburg can be windy and wet; but while fashion here focuses on 56
practicality, functionality and warmth by necessity, this doesn’t mean style is sacrificed. From streetwear-inspired apparel to minimal wardrobe staples, the city’s fashion offerings are diverse and exciting. Practical, utility-focused clothing is popular in Gothenburg and it’s no surprise that denim brands are big business in the city. Established in 2001, Nudie Jeans Left: Lindex spring/summer 2017

uses 100% organic cotton and its best-selling dry jeans are investment pieces, designed to be worn every day for around six months before washing, creating a second skin for the wearer. Nudie Jeans also offers pre-washed jeans and has expanded its range to include jackets, shirts and accessories. The brand is passionate about denim, extolling the virtues of both its hand-crafted dry jeans and its worn-in pieces. It offers a free repair service, resells second-hand products and will even accept your worn-out items for recycling. Store manager Michael Lundin says: ‘We take inspiration from Scandinavian designers and street styles to create basic single-colour garments with a twist, big shapes and layers. for unsophisticated behaviour,’ explains Mänd, an accomplished graffiti artist. Taking inspiration from urban surroundings, the functional City Jacket collection showcases a utilitarian aesthetic, which can also clearly be seen in the brand’s range of water-resistant wool jumpers, bold graphics, monochrome sweatshirts and loosely tailored trousers. ‘We want
A street-style aesthetic is just one of the many facets of Gothenburg’s leading brands canvas rather than heritage to be reissued,’ says Alex Graah. ‘Our design is always personal – we get inspired by things we do, places we see and people we meet, and we design garments which we love to wear ourselves.’ Key pieces for this season include the vibrant Nora jeans, which come in beautiful acid washes, and Otis, a cropped range for men which features raw hems and a subtle acid wash. ‘It’s a great way of looking stylish with a dash of punk added to the mix,’ Graah explains. Named after founder Daniel Mänd’s seamstress grandmother, the Elvine brand blends Gothenburg street culture with family heritage. ‘Our aesthetic can be described as sophisticated clothes Above: Dr Denim Nora jeans spring/summer 2017
to make clothes for sidewalks rather than catwalks,’ says Mänd. A street-style aesthetic is just one of the many facets of Gothenburg’s leading brands. Womenswear label Dughult focuses on timeless, contemporary-classic pieces. Founder Linda Jöfelt’s Made In Sweden capsule collection, designed and produced entirely in the country, features pink wool coats, floral-print dresses in classic silhouettes and minimalist workwear-inspired pieces. Popular brand KappAhl has been trading in Gothenburg for over 60 years and now boasts around 400 stores across Sweden, Norway, Finland and Poland, offering quality design with affordable pricing. Swedish women owned a KappAhl coat, and today the sustainable brand offers womenswear, menswear and childrenswear, as well as organic clothing collections. At Lindex, feminine style meets a minimalist, pared-down aesthetic, with collections centred around crisp shirts, oversized coats and re-used denim. Striking details add moments of whimsy – think frills, embroidery and puff sleeves. Head designer Annika Hedin explains that the Lindex woman opts for clean lines, with a focus on new silhouettes and high-quality fabrics. ‘Our customers are feminine, but with a less-is-more approach. The collection is about opposites and contrasts, minimalism versus maximalism, and playing with
proportions.’ Hedin is enthusiastic about the city’s fashion scene. ‘Gothenburg is quite diverse in style,’ she says. ‘The common ground is well-thought-out outfits with an effortless look. People here have a kind of relaxed attitude towards fashion that makes room for new expressions.’ Ultimately, fashion in Gothenburg, as with so much in the city, comes down to individual preference. Style is about what works for the person, time, weather and the occasion, and the people here are laid-back about what they wear. ‘We don’t really care if we follow trends,’ says Mänd. ‘We do our own thing, which creates the right conditions for design with integrity.’

Gothenburg’s wealth of exciting seafood restaurants offer much more than just the catch of the day, as Hannah Lewis discovers
Stretching from Gothenburg to the Norwegian border, the west coast of Sweden offers some of the best seafood in the world. Thanks to the area’s exceptionally cold and clean water, visitors and locals alike can enjoy a wide array of the freshest fish and shellfish. Oysters and mussels are harvested in spring and autumn, langoustines are at their best in spring and summer, while excellent shrimp and herring can be found all year round. Unsurprisingly, Gothenburg is home to some of Sweden’s most acclaimed seafood restaurants, and chefs here change their menus regularly to utilise the freshest seasonal produce. Eateries range from the traditional to the modern and from hole-in-the-wall-style local favourites to internationally renowned establishments. Whether you’re looking for rustic Swedish fare, Scandinavian-style fine dining or a taste of the exotic, Gothenburg’s seafood restaurants are sure to delight. globalblue.com
VRĂ… At VrĂĽ, head chef Sofia B Olsson and her team fuse Japanese and Swedish cooking techniques to present a fresh and delicious menu. The two cuisines feature several similarities, for example in the prevalent use of vinegar, broths and pickled fish, and the menu features both Swedish and Japanese-inspired dishes, as well as plates that combine the two. Cured, smoked char fish tartare with soy sauce is proof alone that this unique approach yields delicious results. The menu is designed to be a journey for the senses and features the best fish and shellfish from the North Atlantic and inland lakes. Dive-picked oysters from Grebbestad are a highlight and come served lightly finished with Japanese flavours such as soy and sake or white miso.
