STAYING CLOSE Parisian jeweller Jean Dinh Van created his first Menottes design in 1976 as part of a keyring. Menottes is the French word for handcuffs, and the Van Dinh Menottes design has since been developed into a full collection of jewellery in its own right, making a striking feature of the clasp, a practical element that is usually discreetly hidden. The handcuffs are now available in various versions, and over 40 years since the original piece was made, the design remains a timeless symbol of attachment, whether love or friendship. fm

F
or denim connoisseurs, Amsterdam has become something of a pilgrimage, like Japan and the United States. The city has made a name for itself as a young, forward-thinking denim capital. Its ties to denim have often been attributed to the Dutch casual style of dressing and the nation’s love for wearing jeans. While this may have been the catalyst, the city has become a hotspot for denim brands and experts. There’s the Jean School, the world’s only denim school; the annual Denim Days festival; the Kingpins denim trade show; and a whole fleet of denim labels. Kings of Indigo are some of the exciting brands born and bred here over the past few decades. Founded in 1989, G-Star Raw is an Amsterdam-based brand with a milestone anniversary in the offing, as brand director Sean Peron explains. ‘We set out 30 years ago to create innovative denim that could resonate with all kinds of people and generations. It’s been an amazing journey to get from that point to where we are today.’ The Dutch capital serves as the location for the brand’s impressive headquarters, but from here G-Star takes an international outlook. ‘Although G-Star originated in Amsterdam, we consider ourselves global
citizens,’ explains Peron. ‘Our inspirations are worldwide – progressive, functional design is what gets us excited – but we are quite happy to see the same entrepreneurial blue blood that runs through our veins come to life in other brands that call Amsterdam their home.’ One such brand is Denham The Jeanmaker, also simply known as Denham. Founder Jason Denham moved to Amsterdam in the 1990s and founded his namesake brand here in 2008. The premise was simple: Denham aimed to create ‘a premium, exciting, international denim brand’. Fast-forward a decade and Denham The Jeanmaker has celebrated its 10th
anniversary with a series of exciting projects. ‘I’m proud that Denham is one of the pioneers that helped to make Amsterdam the denim capital that it is today,’ reflects the founder. ‘This is the HQ of our brand and we do everything to support the Amsterdam denim city.’ Indeed, the city is not only home to the Denham headquarters, which are located in a beautiful traditional Amsterdam townhouse, but also counts six of the brand’s 50 worldwide stores. This dynamic of an Amsterdam base combined with constant dialogue with the rest of the world is shared by Scotch & Soda. Founded in 1985, the label takes inspiration from globetrotting but these ideas come to life in Amsterdam: a

converted former church located by one of the city’s many canals is the setting for the brand’s atmospheric design studio. As a fabric with its roots in workwear, you might think that denim is a limited – or limiting – material to work with. On the contrary. ‘It’s the most sustainable, hard-wearing, versatile and interesting fabric to work with,’ explains Denham. ‘It’s been around since 1850 and today it performs, feels and looks better than ever thanks to the advanced technology in denim.’ Similarly, G-Star Raw’s Peron highlights how denim’s apparent simplicity is precisely what makes it exciting. ‘The beauty of denim lies in the infinite potential that the globalblue.com
fabric holds. It’s a blank canvas that excites us each time we work with it,’ he says. ‘It’s our job to shape denim into something new that will surprise our audience – a new jeans design, an unexpected art object, or a sustainable garment. It’s a challenge that will keep us busy for at least 30 more years.’ These brands have embraced the potential such a simple fabric offers: it’s all about the detail, as they constantly seek to reinvent each and every aspect in order to create something new. Denim has been an integral part of fashion for decades, so innovation has become key to ensuring its longevity. In light of this, sustainability has recently become a key focus for

Amsterdam’s denim brands remain firmly rooted in the city denim brands across the world. ‘We see sustainability as both a requirement to engage in business in a responsible way, and as a means by which we can continue to innovate in denim design,’ says Peron. G-Star Raw’s approach, he says, is defined by ‘the conceptual challenge of what denim can become through the lens of innovative sustainable design. That’s how we have been able to create the most sustainable indigo dyeing solution on the planet this year, as well as create “renewed denim”: new jeans made using recycled G-Star Raw jeans.’ Always keen to push the boundaries, G-Star Raw has continued to explore sustainability in the form of a collaboration with
Jaden Smith. ‘He’s a multitalented designer, musician, and artist who is a true pioneer and advocate of sustainability for his generation,’ says Peron. ‘We’ve created a new sustainable denim capsule collection that we’re dropping in AW18 that will be very exciting.’ Now more than ever, Amsterdam’s brands are pioneers in the denim field – in the same spirit in which they were founded. While their global vision has ensured their success, they remain firmly rooted in the city and, despite the many internationally important innovations they are working on, this will remain the case. In the words of Jason Denham: ‘The Netherlands will always be the heart of our brand’

G-Star Raw, Denham The Jeanmaker, Scotch & Soda, dan Kings of Indigo adalah sebagian dari merek-merek menggairahkan yang lahir dan dibesarkan di sini selama beberapa dekade terakhir. Didirikan di tahun 1989, G-Star Raw adalah merek berbasis Amsterdam yang sedang menjelang sebuah ulang tahun titik prestasinya, seperti yang dijelaskan direktur merek Sean Peron. ‘Kami memulai 30 tahun silam untuk menciptakan denim yang inovatif, yang dapat diterima oleh segala kalangan dan generasi. darah “biru” kewirausahaan yang sama dengan yang mengalir di nadi kami juga menjadi hidup di merek-merek lain yang menyebut Amsterdam rumah mereka.’ Salah satu merek tersebut adalah Denham The Jeanmaker. Sang pendiri Jason Denham berpindah ke Amsterdam di tahun 1990-an dan berlanjut dengan mendirikan merek yang sama nama dengannya di tahun 2008. Alasannya sederhana: Denham bermaksud menciptakan ‘merek denim yang premium, menggairahkan, dan internasional’. Maju cepat satu dasawarsa dan Denham The Jeanmaker sudah merayakan ulang tahun ke-10 dengan serangkaian proyek yang menggairahkan. ‘Saya bangga bahwa Denham adalah salah satu pelopor yang membantu menjadikan Amsterdam ibu kota denim seperti saat ini,’ renung sang pendiri. ‘Ini markas merek kami dan segalanya kami lakukan demi mendukung kota denim Amsterdam.’ Malah, kota ini bukan hanya rumah bagi kantor pusat Denham, yang berlokasi di sebuah rumah bandar (townhouse) Amsterdam tradisional yang cantik, tetapi juga menampung enam dari 50 toko merek ini di seluruh dunia. Dinamika dari berpangkalan di Amsterdam yang berkombinasi dengan dialog terus-menerus dengan bagian selebihnya dunia ikut dirasakan oleh Scotch & Soda. Didirikan di tahun 1985, label ini mengambil inspirasi dari keliling globe, namun semua gagasan itu menjadi hidup di Amsterdam: sebuah bekas gereja yang dipugar pada salah satu kanal kota adalah lingkungan

Kebalikannya. ‘Ini kain yang paling lestari, tahan usang, serba guna, dan menarik untuk dikerjakan,’ jelas Denham. ‘Kain ini sudah ada sejak tahun 1850 dan hari ini berkinerja, terasa, dan terlihat lebih bagus daripada selama ini berkat teknologi canggih di bidang denim.’ Dengan senada, Peron dari G-Star Raw menyorot betapa kesederhanaan yang mencolok dari denim adalah persis yang menjadikannya menggairahkan. ‘Kecantikan denim terletak pada potensi tak terhingga yang dikandung kain ini. Kain ini kanvas kosong yang menggairahkan kami tiap kali mengerjakannya,’ tukasnya. ‘Tugas kamilah untuk membentuk denim menjadi sesuatu yang baru, yang akan mengejutkan khalayak kami – desain jins baru, benda seni yang tidak terduga, atau busana yang lestari. Itu sebuah tantangan yang akan menjaga kami tetap sibuk selama paling sedikit 30 tahun lagi.’ Merek-merek ini sudah merangkul potensi yang ditawarkan oleh kain yang begitu sederhana: masalahnya terletak pada detail, sambil mereka terus-menerus mencoba menemukan ulang setiap dan semua aspek guna menciptakan sesuatu yang baru. Denim sudah menjadi bagian tidak terpisahkan dari mode selama beberapa dekade, sehingga inovasi menjadi kunci untuk memastikan usia panjangnya. Dengan mengingat hal ini,

kelestarian baru-baru ini menjadi fokus utama bagi merek-merek denim di seluruh dunia. ‘Kami melihat kelestarian sebagai kebutuhan untuk melibatkan bisnis secara bertanggung jawab sekaligus sarana yang dengannya kami bisa terus berinovasi dalam desain denim,’ ujar Peron. Pendekatan G-Star Raw, ujarnya, ditentukan oleh ‘tantangan konseptual berupa apa yang bisa dibuat dari denim menurut kacamata desain lestari yang inovatif. Itulah cara kami tahun ini mampu menciptakan solusi pencelupan indigo yang paling lestari di planet ini, serta menciptakan “denim terbarukan”: jins baru yang dibuat dari jins G-Star daur ulang.’ Selalu ingin mendorong batas-batas, G-Star Raw terus menjelajahi kelestarian berupa kolaborasi dengan Jaden Smith. ‘Dia seorang desainer, musisi, dan seniman multitalenta yang merupakan pelopor dan pembela sejati kelestarian bagi generasinya,’ ujar Peron. ‘Kami sudah menciptakan koleksi kapsul denim lestari baru yang kami turunkan di AW18 yang akan sangat menggairahkan.’ Kini, lebih daripada selama ini, merek-merek Amsterdam adalah pelopor di bidang denim – dalam semangat yang sama dengan ketika didirikan. Sementara visi global mereka sudah memastikan kesuksesan, mereka tetap mengakar dengan kukuh di kota ini dan, sekalipun ada banyak inovasi penting secara internasional yang sedang mereka kerjakan, fakta itu tetap berlaku.
