shoemaker to Hollywood stars. Fast forward 80 years and the palazzo is now home to one of the most alluring fashion flagships in Europe. Restored in 2000, today it is known for its 17th- and 18th-century Florentine art; the basement houses the Museo Salvatore Ferragamo, which showcases a collection of 10,000 pairs of shoes designed by Ferragamo throughout his lifetime. While Ferragamo shoes are available throughout the world, the flagship in Florence offers a unique visitor experience, combining the rich legacy of the brand with an of-the-moment retail space containing the latest collections. ‘When my husband died [in 1960] his dream was a House of Ferragamo where you could buy

lorence, with its incredible Renaissance heritage, might not be as synonymous with high-end retail as Milan, yet it is carving out a niche for itself in the fashion world thanks to its renewed focus on exceptional flagships. Not satisfied with wowing customers with cutting-edge design and gleaming, multi-faceted spaces, the big Italian fashion players are investing in Florence’s heritage buildings and transforming them into memorable celebrations of their own history. Salvatore Ferragamo bought the late 13th-century Palazzo Spini Feroni in 1938 and turned it into the brand’s headquarters. The designer had returned to his Italian roots to launch his eponymous label following his early success as a

Florence is carving out a niche for itself in the fashion world thanks to the renewed focus on exceptional flagships shoes and everything else for elegant dressing,’ Wanda Ferragamo told the New York Times in 1981. It was this vision that drove the success of the brand, and still informs its flagship today. It’s one of a number of exceptional flagships that offer a complete immersion into the DNA of a brand, a growing trend within high-end retail spaces. Nick Leith-Smith is the founder Nick Leith-Smith Architecture and Design, which has conceived stores for brands such as Manolo Blahnik, Harvey Nichols and Kurt Geiger. ‘Expectations are high within new retail,’ explains Leith-Smith. ‘Clients have come to expect more challenging unique experiences, blending modern technology and
contemporary craftsmanship, often with strong local art and cultural references.’ As a result, there are an increasing number of multi-faceted spaces that embrace many different aspects of a brand and seek to represent both their present and their past. The Aquazzura flagship on Lugano Corsini is a good example. To live and operate out of the Palazzo Corsini was a dream of Aquazzura’s founder and creative director Edgardo Osorio when he was a student in Florence – and one that he has since turned into a reality. In 2015 Aquazzura opened its flagship in the 15th-century palazzo where Osorio also resides in a private apartment. It was once lived in by the Medici family, and

family palazzo was where the eponymous founder first worked with fabric manufacturers in the 1950s to develop the distinctive printed stretch fabrics that made him famous. Over 70 years later and the palazzo is still occupied by the Pucci family and, more importantly, still very much the beating heart of the brand. Recent campaigns have been shot on its large rooftop terrace, which was designed by Gae Aulenti in 1968, but you’ll have to

its walls are covered with Renaissance frescoes. Bold colours and stripes, which are the basis of the brand’s distinctive aesthetic, blend with period Florentine features for a seamless fusion of antiquity and modernity. Visitors to the Aquazzura flagship can browse a comprehensive selection of Osorio’s designs – footwear that manages to be simultaneously vibrant, sexy and comfortable – and also make use of a made-to-order service. The fact that the store is situated on the banks of the Arno, surrounded by some of the finest shoemakers and craftsmen in the world, only adds to the authenticity of the space. Another Italian fashion house whose roots are firmly planted in Florence is Emilio Pucci, whose

walk to Via de’ Tornabuoni to find the Pucci boutique, where white and silver interiors provide the backdrop for the brand’s colourful printed creations. Last but not least, there is the Gucci Museo in the Piazza della Signoria – a perfect complement to the flagship store in Via de’ Tornabuoni – whose inviting shop sells one-off Gucci originals. Currently under restoration, it’s home to an incredible archive of pieces that have served as inspiration for the brand’s collections over the years and is set to reopen soon. ROME The Italian capital offers history at every turn, but did you know it is home to an Egyptian-style pyramid? Built in the first century BC, the Piramide Cestia (pyramid of Cestius) is one of Rome’s most intriguing sites. Another surprising structure is the Casina delle Civette (house of the owls); built in 1840, it is now a museum famous for its unrivalled collection of stained glass, as well as for the recurring owl motifs from which it gets its nickname, and is often compared to

a fairytale castle. The city is filled with beautiful religious buildings. The Jesuit church of Sant’Ignazio, for example, is notable for its stunning trompe l’oeil painted ceiling, which appears domed though it is actually flat and has to be seen to be believed. If modern art is more to your taste, visit the incredible Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo (museum of 21stcentury art), better known as MAXXI, or even take a stroll through the vibrant Ostiense district, famous for its array of street art. Once you’ve soaked in the sights, the area is home to some of the trendiest restaurants and bars in the city, making it the perfect place to spend the evening. Milan’s cathedral is, of course, a must-visit attraction, but be sure not to miss a trip to the roof to view the whole city from above. Another fantastic vista of Milan can be seen from the modern Palazzo Lombardia. This complex of skyscrapers, home to the offices of the president and regional government of Lombardy, welcomes guests to enjoy the view from its 39th floor each Sunday. Other intriguing attractions include the Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci (Museum of Science and Technology), which is inspired by the artist’s passion for invention. Fashion fans will appreciate a tour of the Atelier Sangalli workshop, after which they can commission a bespoke garment; this is where Milan’s most stylish residents go for
impeccably tailored pieces. After a hard day’s exploring, scout out one of the city’s many hole-in-the-wall bars for a tasty aperitivo (a local institution). For dinner, many of Milan’s best eateries are tucked down little side streets, so be sure to take a look. Or, for something out of the ordinary, book a meal on the historic Atmosfera tram, which will take you around central Milan while you eat delicious Italian food.

FLORENCE Florence is the city of Michelangelo, and you can’t leave without experiencing some of his world-famous creations first-hand at the Galleria dell’Accademia and the Medici chapels – arrive early to beat the crowds. From there, head to the Mercato Centrale (one of Europe’s biggest covered markets) for an authentic local breakfast or brunch. There are hundreds of options, all made with the freshest local ingredients. Adventurous eaters should try a lampredotto – a tripe sandwich found only in Florence. Another classic regional sandwich worth trying is made from a local bread called schiacciata, which is stuffed with pork, pecorino cheese and truffle sauce. VENICE Venice is built on an archipelago of 118 small islands linked by bridges, so make the most of them and explore on foot. You may get a little lost, but that’s part of the fun, and it’s often how you’ll end up discovering something new – perhaps a traditional trattoria in which to sample the local delicacy of bigoli pasta in a salsa flavoured with anchovies, or a charming little bar serving cicchetti (snacks served with a drink). hoosing a company logo is an important task for any brand, but for Italian lifestyle label Harmont & Blaine – whose dachshund symbol is instantly recognisable to its fans across the globe – the choice was about more than just the image. This likeable creature was chosen because it directly reflects the company’s philosophy and values. The dachshund, explains the team, is a German dog bred for hunting, which has overcome its comical (though adorable) physique by proving its worth with its nose and its intelligence. Harmont &
Blaine, a family company founded in the Gulf of Naples in the 1960s, faced all the struggles a fledgling business could expect. But when it found its ‘nose’ – that unique identity that made it truly stand out – the brand proved its worth. In 1995, when its first collection of dachshund-branded clothing was launched, the Harmont & Blaine of today was born. MY MILAN: ALESSANDRO SQUARZI Fashion entrepreneur and style icon Alessandro Squarzi was voted Esquire’s best-dressed man in the world in 2017. His AS65 label, founded three years ago, is known for its vintage-look parkas for both men and women. He shares his hotspots in his home town of Milan with Rebecca Rhys-Evans ‘I was born in Forlì and I love the Romagna region. I am very attached to my roots. I’ve never tried to lose my accent. People who deny their upbringing don’t have much to say. ‘I now live in Milan, a city that has much to offer in terms of work and play. But as soon as I can, I go back to my second home town, Rimini, the city that has adopted me. The person I most admire from Rimini is the famous filmmaker Federico Fellini: his movies are pure genius. He left a massive cultural

heritage that is recognised all over the world, but unfortunately not so much in Rimini itself. My style heroes include his leading man Marcello Mastroianni, along with Paul Newman and James Dean. ‘When shopping in Milan, I love Massimo Alba. He is a genius with fabrics, in particular knitwear. Also, The Store in Via Solferino has a great selection of everything, from elegant eveningwear to sportswear. And finally, there’s my amazing Fortela * p.93, in Via Melzo, because it takes you back to the 30s. I have been working with vintage for 30 years; 15 years ago I started to create something from this passion, and Fortela and AS65 are the result. My favourite item from the new AS65 collection is the double-breasted military jacket lined with white sheepskin: the canons of the military concept are broken by the interior to create a strong and contrasting look. ‘In terms of restaurants, El

Carnicero serves the best meat in town, and Langosteria does the greatest fish – if I could, I would go there every night. Pasticceria Marchesi * p.98, in Via Montenapoleone is very welcoming, it feels like home. I love the view from the terrace of Ceresio 7. There is also a small deconsecrated church which has been turned into a cool bar, La Chiesetta, with a great beer selection. ‘When friends come to Milan, I always like to take them around the Fondazione Prada museum or to see the Bosco Verticale vertical garden. I have very little time to explore the city on foot, but when I can I’m happy to take a stroll from home to the office. ‘My favourite place to shop outside Italy is, without a doubt, Tokyo. Everybody is extremely cultured over there and I love people who can teach me something. Just think – they even have a book solely about how to wash jeans!’

イタリア都市観光の穴場ガイド イタリアの主要都市の魅力は観光名 所だけではない。観光客があまりいか ない穴場をハンナ・ルイスが訪ねた。 ローマのコロッセオからヴェニスのゴ ンドラまで、イタリア観光でお馴染み の名所はやはり見て、体験しないわけ にはいかない。ただ、都市探訪では行 って当然の場所以外のところも訪ね るといい。イタリアが 初めてでも2 回 目でも10回目でも、必ず何かしら新し い発見があるものだ。この国の主要 都市には文化が溢れている。しかもそ れは既知の場所に限らない。今まで 存在すら知らなかった小さな食事処 から歴史的遺物まで、ローマ、ミラノ、 フィレンツェ、ヴェニスの事情通が穴 場を紹介してくれた。各都市をちょっ と違った角度から見るヒントになるだ ろう。
