IN STORE: AQUAFLOR
‘Aquaflor opened the doors to the first room of the atelier in 2009, on Via Borgo Santa Croce,’ says Nicola Bianchi, perfumer at the celebrated fragrance brand. ‘In the following years, the boutique perfumery began to grow, gradually at first, expanding into the adjacent rooms of the palazzo. Today, Aquaflor has a laboratory and production space, as well as a workshop area in the cellars, perfumer’s studio and a new concept store, Modus Vivendi.’ It is the store itself that truly sets Aquaflor apart from its competitors. ‘The store is a treasure waiting to be found,’ says Bianchi. ‘The small entrance on

the street opens into a new world of fragrance, where precious raw materials and intriguing mixtures can be discovered. We are an artistic maison and we are proud of our artisanal approach to perfumery. From the selection of quality raw materials and ingredients for each of our perfumes to the production of every single bottle, all the way to the final packaging, we put extra care into every single detail. This commitment to craftsmanship creates a personal bond, a true relationship between our products and our customers.’ The boutique is deeply rooted in Florence’s glamourous past and it would be hard not to be impressed by the space and its surroundings. ‘The location is a special one,’ says Bianchi. ‘The store is situated in a historic Renaissance palazzo, a landmark commissioned by the Florentine Serristori family and realised by Giuliano da Sangallo, one of the best architects of the time.’ However, even given such an opulent location and surroundings, the art of perfumery is still the

main draw at Aquaflor. ‘Everything here is conducive to exploring the fragrances. We want to connect with our customers in a different and more personal way – we want them to understand how exciting, rewarding, and sometimes challenging, the process of creating a fragrance can be. So, we came up with a series of experiences. Here, you can “taste” perfumes, train your nose, and learn about composition. You can also take part in an interactive workshop on artistic perfumery and learn how to assemble your own fragrance. Finally, you can explore tailormade perfumes with a one-on-one session with our perfumer and receive a special fragrance designed exclusively for you.’ The constant influence of the magical city that is home to Aquaflor is evident in every perfume, from concept to creation. ‘We are trying to infuse each creation – from perfumes to candles and soap – with a bit of our history and that of the city that surrounds us, along with our culture of craftsmanship and the passion for this work,’ says Bianchi. globalblue.com
If you are looking to take a little bit of that Florentine essence home with you then Bianchi has a suggestion. ‘A simple way to freshen up your home every day or when you invite guests into your space is with an Aquaflor signature fragrance and diffuser,’ he explains.
We infuse each creation with our history and that of the city ‘It is the quintessential olfactory portrait of Florence. A delightful and stimulating scent, it will remind you of the Renaissance city and give you something to share with those who visit.’ It is undoubtedly a perfect souvenir from this exceptional Florentine store. Once you’ve reached Florence’s beautiful indoor food market, make your way to Da Nerbone, a traditional market stand Above: the stunning Duomo di Firenze
serving Tuscan food – if you can’t find its location from the sign, it’s easily identifiable from the queue of locals waiting to order lunch. Once you’re feeling refreshed and re-energised, it’s time for some sightseeing. Florence is a relatively small, compact city, meaning you can walk from place to place with ease.
Must-visit locations include the Palazzo Vecchio town hall, the Santa Croce church and the renowned Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore – commonly known as Il Duomo, the city’s biggest cathedral is famous for its gothic facade and impressive dome. A major building from the Renaissance era, this is a very busy destination, particularly during late spring and summer, so be sure to book an early morning tour well in advance. Walking across the ancient Ponte Vecchio bridge is a truly memorable experience. Here, you can not only take a photo with one of Italy’s most photogenic backgrounds, you can also peruse the surrounding shops. With world-class goldsmiths that date Above: a view of the Basilica di Santa Croce
back as far as the 14th century, this is the ideal place to find a truly historic souvenir such as a watch or piece of jewellery. If it’s art you’re seeking, there are few locations with more to offer than Florence; Michelangelo’s David and Botticelli’s Birth of Venus are among the highlights of the city’s world-famous Italian art collections. The Uffizi Gallery and Galleria dell’Accademia are among the most notable galleries and you should arrive early to explore the vast rooms filled with magnificent works by Renaissance greats such as da Vinci, Botticelli, Caravaggio and Titian. If your thirst for art isn’t quenched after your visit, Florence has much more to offer. Museo del Novecento is the city’s contemporary art

museum, hosting over 300 paintings, sculptures and installations of artworks by Italian artists of the 20th century. The building itself is spectacular: spacious, white and minimalist, it serves as a contemporary contrast to a city built around historic architecture. It would be difficult to ignore the Italy’s extraordinary relationship with fashion. Not only does it boast a long list of internationally recognised luxury brands – Bulgari, Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace and Armani, to name a few – it’s also home to some of the world’s finest tailors, leather craftsmen and jewellers. What Milan is to Prada, Florence is to Gucci and the Museo Gucci gives visitors a taste of Italian design at its finest. Here you can discover the luggage that started the brand’s story, as well as many other pieces that the label has created over its near 100 years of business. There’s also an Icon store, a restaurant and bookshop, so you can eat, drink Above (from top): the Ponte Vecchio bridge; an ornate ceiling in the Uffizi Gallery; enjoy a delicious Negroni at popular bar Rasputin
and shop after learning about all things Gucci. Following a day of sightseeing and absorbing some of the city’s art, you might be in need of some time to relax with a drink. The aperitivo is a big part of Italian culture and, luckily for you, Florence is home to the one of the world’s best cocktails, the Negroni. Composed of gin, Vermouth Rosso and Campari, the Negroni was invented in 1919, and you should be sure to try the versions at Rasputin or Bitter Bar, two of the city’s most popular cocktail bars, which will transport you back to the 1920s in true speakeasy style. Florentine food is another essential aspect of your visit. It feels as though you could visit the city every year for the rest of your life and still be able to try new and exquisite Italian food each time. For traditional Tuscan fare, Zeb is an authentic deli, bar and restaurant that offers family recipes and
seasonal produce at an affordable price, and is slightly off the beaten track. Daily specials might include pear and ricotta ravioli in creamy butter, or octopus potato salad. Meat eaters should try steak dish bistecca alla Fiorentina for a delicious cut from the Tuscan Chianina breed of cattle. Florentines take great pride in their T-bone steaks and there are several leading establishments which profess to offer the best, but we recommend sticking to the trattorias (traditional, informal Italian eateries). Trattoria Zà Zà, Mamma Gina and Buca Lapi showcase great service and exceptional steaks. If you’re after an indulgent meal, then Enoteca Pinchiorri is a great choice. The

three-starred Michelin restaurant serves gastronomic delights with a six-course tasting menu by Annie Féolde, the first female chef in Italy to be awarded three stars. Florence is a breathtakingly beautiful city and there are multiple spots with unforgettable vistas. One of the most popular destinations is Piazzale Michelangelo square, which provides particularly stunning views at sunset, but be prepared to share the experience with lots of other people. For a slightly quieter vantage point, try Villa Bardini and its wonderfully whimsical gardens. This is also a great place to head at sunset, and if it’s a photo opportunity you’re after, you can’t beat these grounds in spring when the wisteria is in bloom.
Outdoor space and gardens are something the Italians do well, and the Boboli Gardens are a must if you’re a horticulturalist at heart. Spend a relaxing afternoon here while enjoying an ice cream from Gelateria della Passera, one of the city’s favourite gelato houses. After you’ve seen the city at sunset, end the day at a pizzeria. Authentic and delicious, Gustapizza offers superb food in a laid-back atmosphere, with dishes served on paper plates. If the queue here is too long, Trattoria Nerone is said to be one of the best pizzerias in Italy and its quirky interior is as delightful as the food itself. Clearly, it’s not just world-class pizza that makes Florence so special. The city has an indescribable magic about it that keeps people coming back. The art, architecture, food, fashion and Florentine sense of friendliness all, quite rightly, give this little city its big reputation

Style Dynasties Italy’s family-run luxury brands are at the forefront of the fashion industry, encompassing everything from tailoring to jewellery. The secrets of their success are all relative, as Ginger Rose Clark discovers
Above: siblings Jacopo, Veronica, Kean and Ippolito Etro
Our idea of a traditional Italian family can, perhaps, lean toward something of a stereotype – we fondly picture huge family occasions where people are gathered together to share a delicious meal, with noisy chatter, much gesticulating and the occasional heated argument thrown in for good measure. But, cliché or no, family-run brands mean serious business in Italy, as seen in the success of luxury brands handed down from one generation to another. 87
93
Dynasties are still very much part of the fabric of the Italian luxury industry and Missoni and Etro’s family trees are among the most famous. It doesn’t stop there, however. Kiton and Ermenegildo Zegna, which are renowned for tailoring, and Damiani and Buccellati, celebrated for jewellery, are all family businesses. The footwear industry is also particularly family orientated. Casadei, Santoni, Alberto Guardiani and Cesare Paciotti are all family-run – and the list goes on.
50 | F E AT U R E S
From suits to shoes, these luxury brands are all linked by a generational continuity that means heritage is imparted and craftsmanship is inextricable from family life. Secrets, techniques and stories are passed down from one generation to the next, like family heirlooms. Established in 1924, Damiani was founded by Enrico Damiani, with his son Damiano Damiani taking over the business in the 1970s. Today, the company is run by Damiano Damiani’s children Silvia, Guido and Giorgio Damiani, who grew up surrounded by jewellery to the extent that family holidays were determined by where their father wanted to source stones. They learned from him and also inherited his passion. ‘We were lucky enough to be able to learn the trade alongside our father, a visionary and

talented man,’ says Guido Damiani. Transmission from parent to child can contribute to the continuation and consolidation of extraordinarily strong brand identities. This is beautifully showcased at Etro, where a love for paisley seems to run in the blood. Led by siblings Ippolito, Jacopo, Kean and Veronica, the offspring of founder Gerolamo Etro, the label has reinvented paisley season after season for the past 50 years and has become synonymous with the pattern. Family values are very much a part of the DNA of these brands and integrity, loyalty, pride and heritage are some of the principles that are nurtured at their very cores. Kiton’s founder Ciro Paone comes from a family that specialised in fabrics and textiles for five generations. He learned the family trade working in his uncle’s shop as a child and, continuing in this vein, went on to found Kiton in Above (from left): Kiton; Damiani Belle Epoque collection, both spring/summer 2019

1968. Now, with many relatives working for the company, Paone’s status has both managerial and paternal dimensions. This two-fold standing only serves to enhance the communication of family values to the company as a whole: his passion for excellence, beauty and

craftmanship are naturally imparted to those family members working at the heart of the brand, who then pass these same values on to other employees. The powerful family entity naturally leads to a deep-running love for the product. Location is also of extreme importance to family businesses and Italy’s footwear brands are classic examples of companies that have stayed firmly rooted where they were originally founded. A sense of belonging defines these houses. This joint union of family and place is also a major determining factor for the famous Made in Italy designation, as exemplified by the Casadei brand. Creative director Cesare Casadei’s parents founded the company in 1958 in a location just outside Rimini. He started his own line in the 1980s and became Casadei’s creative director in 1994. His daughter, Ariana Casadei, grew up in this environment. ‘I learned from an early age that I needed to be very quiet in order to spend time with my father and assist the process,’ she recalls. ‘I usually ended up spending a lot of time in Oriana’s

magic room, as I used to call it. Oriana has been the embroidery maestro of Casadei for over 50 years. She let me play with pearls, rhinestones and sequins.’ Now the brand’s global communications director, Ariana Casadei married deputy production director Nicolò Zaghini in 2018, in San Mauro Pascoli, where the brand was founded. To mark this momentous occasion, Cesare Casadei designed his daughter’s wedding shoes, a sentimental gesture that celebrates more than just the father-daughter bond. ‘These shoes mean a lot, not just because they are my bridal shoes, but because there is part of all my beloved family in them: my dad who designed them, my granddad who accurately checked they were impeccable and, of course, the magic hands of Oriana, who embroidered the uppers, crystal by crystal. I treasure them as they truly embody the legacy and my precious heritage,’ she explains. In Italy, as in many other Mediterranean countries, the strength of family bonds shows no sign of diminishing and, in an era where giant conglomerates continue to snap up luxury brands for their portfolios at an alarming rate, the notion of a family business has become more appealing than ever before. Many brands have known how to harness this, turning it into a USP by making it part of their story – being a family is not simply a branding tool, it’s a powerful, all-encompassing reality Above (from top): two shoes from Casadei spring/summer 2019; a young Cesare Casadei with his parents
Carried Away
When you travel, travel in style. No country has captured the glamour of perfect luggage better than Italy, as Ruairidh Pritchard discovers Left: Bric’s Bellagio collection spring/summer 2019

hen international travel first became widely available, the glamour and luxury of flying seemed boundless. During the 1950s and 60s, widely recognised as the golden era of travel, the super-chic were jetting into Italy, no doubt inspired by the charm of films such as Roman Holiday, starring stage and style icon Audrey Hepburn, and Federico Fellini’s 1960 classic La Dolce Vita. As the world became more connected, the mystique of international travel waned, as cheap flights and budget airlines opened up no-frills escapes to the masses. However, today, with the advent of social media, a new-found, more contemporary allure has manifested itself around travel, and once again, Italian style is playing a key role. When Mario Briccola founded the Bric’s brand in 1952, the golden age of travel was only just beginning. Specialising in hand-crafted travel bags and fine leather goods crafted in the Lake Como region of northern Italy, a short distance from Milan, Bric’s quickly became a go-to brand for the new Italian jet set. Today Bric’s is still run by the Briccola family, and last year celebrated its 65th anniversary as one of the world’s leading luxury luggage brands. ‘Luggage needs to be enjoyable to use and enjoyable to look at,’ explains Attilio Briccola, CEO of Bric’s and son of Mario Briccola. ‘It reflects our personality, style and lifestyle choices and just makes you feel great when gliding through the airport seamlessly. Nothing says style better than a beautiful set of matching luggage and it certainly helps set the scene in those Instagrammable airport shots.’ 88

Crucially, Bric’s has focused in recent years on ensuring that style isn’t compromised by the ever-changing travel landscape. ‘People are travelling a lot more frequently and taking more short-haul trips for both business and leisure, and so luggage choices are no longer one size fits all,’ says Attilio Briccola. To respond to the demands of the modern-day stylish traveller, Bric’s has expanded its range of bags and luggage, from the Monza and Torino lines of business suitcases, bags and backpacks to the colourful Riccione range of hard-shell trolleys and the elegant cream and tan Firenze collection of carry-ons and holdalls. In addition to the extensive existing range, this season Bric’s has relaunched its famous Bellagio collection. While the retro design was inspired by the first Bric’s travel bags and trunks, the collection is one of the brand’s most innovative, with a super-light, high-performance polycarbonate shell, smooth Japanese-made wheels, built-in locks approved by the Transportation
Security Administration, and luxurious leather-clad trims and finishes. ‘People tend to want to have a few luggage options available to suit their needs,’ explains Attilio Briccola, ‘so the overall product profile has expanded greatly to allow the consumer more choice to fit their lifestyle.’ Pamela Carnelli, chief marketing officer of Fabbrica Pelletterie Milano, agrees that travel today is not only about discovery, but also about lifestyle. As the luxury luggage brand enters its 73rd year, it’s proving that it’s still at the forefront of luxury bags and luggage. In its latest collection, Bank, a collaboration with celebrated technical designer Marc Sadler, the brand draws on its heritage while remaining thoroughly contemporary. Made in Italy, the designs were inspired by the luxury travel trunks of

aluminium cabin suitcases. Gucci recently partnered with British luggage label Globe-Trotter on a line of monogrammed carry-on cases. In an age where luggage is once again no longer merely functional, but also fashionable, and travel reaches further into everyday life, the glamour and allure of the international voyage has inevitably evolved. the early 20th century, crafted in cutting-edge, technical metals – hardwearing yet lightweight. Eye-catching customisable touches allow the customer to choose the colour and material of their chosen model’s handles, across all seven sizes, and in four colour variations. ‘In the last few years, we are seeing how luggage is becoming more and more an essential accessory for everyone,’ says Carnelli. ‘As part of daily life, the style of the luggage reflects the personality of the traveller. The luggage is no longer only a container, but also a personal belonging, a fashion accessory.’ This factor has not been overlooked by of Italy’s fashion powerhouses. Fendi, Bottega Veneta and Gucci are among the many Italian fashion brands that have branched into luggage and more substantial travel bags. Bottega Veneta’s classic woven leather is now seen on trolley bags. Fendi’s logo, in no small part the reason for its recent resurgence as one of the brands of the moment, is etched into brushed

NECCI DAL 1924 Necci dal 1924’s cool café culture and stunning outdoor space make it a popular haunt. One of the most elegant outdoor spaces in Rome, located in the cool Pigneto district, it was a location for Pier Paolo Pasolini’s film Accattone, shot in 1961. The café-restaurant boasts impressive coffee and pastries, perfect fuel for a day exploring this vibrant neighbourhood. Those seeking something heartier can enjoy a varied menu of classic dishes, including paccheri pasta with octopus. Necci dal 1924, Via Fanfulla da Lodi 68, 00176 Rome, +39 06 9760 1552, necci1924.com

VILLA NECCHI CAMPIGLIO
PHOTO: GIORGIO MAJNO
A 1930s mansion with lush gardens, Villa Necchi Campiglio is now a beautiful museum. It’s an oasis of calm and a cult destination for the in-the-know fashion crowd. Visitors wander its rooms ‒ including a panelled library and elegant drawing room ‒ to take in the original art deco features and works of art, and can also stroll through the wonderful grounds. The villa was the setting for the impeccably chic 2009 film I Am Love and has hosted many fashion week shows. FABIANA FILIPPI For spring/summer 2019, Fabiana Filippi takes you to the idyllic landscape of Île Sainte-Marie, off the coast of Madagascar. The womenswear brand champions luxury wardrobe staples and offers a collection inspired by nature. Refined neutral tones in earthy green and golden beige remind us of the coast, sea and sand, while accent hues of plum, anthracite and lavender, Global Blue Lounge
alongside botanical prints, all nod to the flowers found in this area. MOSCHINO Inject some fun into your wardrobe with Italian luxury brand Moschino, renowned for a 1980s aesthetic and never shy of making a statement. Under the creative direction of Jeremy Scott, the label’s designs have encompassed everything from Barbie to Bugs Bunny and the iconic Moschino Bear.

42: FLORENCE: AN INSIDER GUIDE
Но мы рекомендуем globalblue.ru
