ebanon has long been known for its diamond industry, but in recent years a new generation of jewellery designers has emerged, united by an approach that manages to be highly modern while also referencing the country’s heritage. It makes for a refreshing new chapter in the world of fine jewels. Born into a family of jewellers who 110

supplied the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, Selim Mouzannar spent his childhood in his father’s atelier before studying gemmology in France and working for jewellers worldwide. He is a perfect example of the Lebanese combination of ancient and modern. ‘What I am trying to do is combine our talents with those of our Left: Ralph Masri Phoenician Script earrings

ancestors,’ says Mouzannar. ‘I play with the codes of classical jewellery by integrating new techniques with stones of unusual colours and sizes to create a collection of powerful, colourful, joyful, inspired and contemporary jewellery.’ Mouzannar’s creative approach results in pieces that fuse the designer’s knowledge and passion for gemstones with art deco and Ottoman themes. In the case of his Beirut collection, this means chiselled frames that echo the city’s distinctive architecture, while exquisitely cut emeralds and sapphires evoke the stained glass of Beirut’s cathedral as it traps the sunlight. When it comes to cutting gemstones, Mouzannar is a master of the rose-cut diamond, or the falamanki cut, as he refers to it. ‘It is a classic Ottoman jewellery tradition. The stone is shaped with fewer facets than a modern cut, which gives a very soft shine and vintage feel,’ he says. pieces that reference art nouveau, as well as the art deco movement. Trios of rings and pendants feature vibrantly coloured gemstones, including tsavorite and rhodolite offset against black enamel and gold for an exuberant, covetable appeal. Beirut-born Ralph Masri travelled extensively in his youth, before training as a jeweller at Central Saint Martins in London. A winner of the Swarovski Award, Masri established his own label in 2011 and is well known for his statement pieces and collections that reference his Middle East heritage. ‘Beirut is a huge inspiration to me,’ he says. ‘Its history, architecture and culture greatly influence me as a designer. It’s a melting pot of eastern and western culture, which is reflected in a lot of my work.’ Lauded for bringing a cutting-edge design aesthetic to fine jewellery, Masri says his approach is the result of the time he spent abroad. ‘Being exposed to all these different cultures, especially London with its incredible diversity, had a big impact on my

Lebanese fine jewellers use progressive design in their striking work style, which fuses east with west,’ he says. ‘Nothing broadens a designer’s horizons more than travel.’ The collections reference historic themes, including the Phoenician alphabet and geometric arabesque patterns and motifs. This results in bold statement pieces. Earrings are studded with tiny gemstones, including white diamonds, emeralds, pink diamonds and rubies, 18-carat rose gold cuffs with pink diamonds, and dazzling 18-carat white gold rings with emeralds. Masri has carved out a niche for himself. ‘I love the finesse and preciousness of fine jewellery,’ he says, ‘but I also really enjoy the adventurous spirit of fashion jewellery. With my work I try to blend the two to create statement fine jewels that are bold yet refined.’ Finally, there is Gaelle Khouri, who trained at fashion house Elie Saab before founding her eponymous brand. Khouri’s
fine jewellery collection takes inspiration from the dynamic that exists between women and nature, with vivid depictions of earthly elements recast as jewellery pieces. Her Caterpillar earrings, made from yellow gold and rhodium-plated silver, are studded with diamonds and sapphires. For 2017, Khouri released Soft Deconstruction, a collection that combines circular rose-gold earrings, rings and chokers, layered and intertwined. Masri, Mouzannar and Khouri are united by a desire to stretch the boundaries of fine jewellery design beyond traditional themes and styles to incorporate much broader, cutting-edge trends. ‘It takes a lot of experimentation and research to strike the right balance,’ explains Masri, ‘as you can’t go too crazy when working with such costly materials.’ Incorporating fine jewellery with progressive design concepts is challenging, but these Lebanese designers have the formula perfected

hink of couture and you will probably think of Paris. Yet some 4,000 kilometres away, Lebanon is home to a burgeoning community of couture and bespoke designers. The made-to-measure scene which has emerged at the eastern edge of the Mediterranean is brimming with vitality. Ambassadors such as Elie Saab have helped to broaden the global remit. Younger labels are also gaining serious attention, gathering big-name supporters and appearing on red carpets and at high-profile special occasions. Fashion designer Ekaterina Malysheva, for example, wore a bespoke bridal gown by Lebanese designer Sandra Mansour at her recent wedding to the younger Prince Ernst August of Hanover. The past 20 years or so have seen a couture explosion in Lebanon. Designer Georges Chakra, whose eponymous fashion
house has shown at Paris Couture Week, was a pioneer in the field. Chakra feels a strong link between his home country and his work: ‘There is a mix of Orientalism and Occidentalism that helps shape my designs. As a country that borders the Mediterranean, Lebanon is rich in deep colours and hues of yellow and orange. Because of this heritage, I tend to favour bold colours, which I incorporate throughout most of my couture collections.’ This love of Lebanon is a common thread that unites the country’s leading designers: affection for their homeland is very much in evidence, often influencing their designs. Tony Ward studied and gained experience in France, working under some of the greatest names of the time at Lanvin, Dior and Chloé. Yet his loyalty lay with his home nation. ‘Lebanon is my country, my home, and the place where I grew up,’ he says. ‘I always knew

I would come back; it was just a question of time.’ The designer sees Beirut as ‘one of the international capitals for couture.’ Ward is one of its shining stars; he too has been invited to show at Paris Couture Week. A passion for beautiful apparel runs in Ward’s family. His father, Elie Ward, set up his own bespoke maison in 1952. ‘The bestdressed ladies in the city came to him seeking his garments for special occasions,’ says Tony Ward. ‘I grew up surrounded by beautiful fabrics and with tailoring in my DNA so of course I was greatly influenced by it.’ Ward took on the challenge and set up his eponymous
brand in 1997. As he explains, ‘In the end, my father’s passion and dedication to his clients inspired me to take on this journey.’ Tony Ward is not the only house with a familial aspect. Georges Chakra recently welcomed his daughter Jennifer Chakra to the team. ‘Along the years my employees have become a new family, and to have someone as qualified as my daughter pass along the brand for generations to come is a dream come true,’ enthuses the designer. A new generation is already poised to further stoke the energy that is so noticeably present in Lebanese bespoke fashion. George

Lebanon’s leading ateliers see stunning pieces brought to life, to the delight of elite clients Azzi and Assaad Osta are part of this younger generation. Both trained under Elie Saab, they are the founders of the Azzi & Osta label, which is known for one-off pieces created with painstaking attention to detail. As Azzi and Osta explain, ‘Some dresses require more time and attention than others, given their design, structure and handwork requirements.’ A recent custom bridal look was one of the most time-consuming pieces they have made. ‘The dress was composed of a straight, fully-embroidered fitted front and a ruffled back of endless metres of silk gazar with an embroidered tail measuring five metres long,’ they recall. ‘The veil was also hand-sequined to complete the majesty of the dress. hours to prepare, from the ideas and sketches up until delivery.’ As with Ward and Chakra, George Azzi and Assaad Osta also cite a direct link between the Lebanese capital and their atelier: ‘Beirut is a vibrant city of life with so much history, energy and modernity. It really reflects the atmosphere at Atelier Azzi & Osta.’ Lebanon and its designers are resolutely intertwined, giving Beirut’s bespoke scene a distinct identity of its own. When you order a couture dress that is made perfectly to your measurements, it should fit like a satin glove’

Among Beirut’s many delicious specialities, meze makes a great introduction to the flourishing Lebanese food scene, says Hannah Lewis

ebanese food is having a moment right now – perhaps more than a moment. For many years, foodie cities have enthusiastically embraced Lebanese cuisine. Meze-inspired restaurants are everywhere from New York to London and our appetite for this eastern Mediterranean fare shows no sign of waning. However, there remains no better place to sample it than the country of its origin. Make the most of a visit to Beirut and

discover the city’s vibrant food scene. At the heart of the eastern Mediterranean, Lebanon has developed a cuisine that shares many characteristics typical of the region, of course with its own particular specialities. Meze, a selection of small plates designed to share, is the perfect introduction to Lebanese food. As well as familiar dishes such as tabbouleh, hummus and baba ganoush, look out for lesser-known

Lebanese specialities, such as samke harra, a dish of baked fish in a spicy tahini sauce that we love. For anyone new to this cuisine, the abundance of dishes might seem overwhelming, so a venue like Tawlet, where the choice is made for guests, is a good place to start. ‘Tawlet is a farmer’s kitchen, a communal kitchen where every day a different home cook prepares dishes that represent their region, tradition and tastes,’ Above (both): Tawlet restaurant
explains founder Kamal Mouzawak. Consequently, the menu changes daily, always taking advantage of fresh seasonal produce, and always offering various delicious dishes, including salads, vegetarian platters, and meat and fish options. Guests are invited to sample everything on offer, but Mouzawak’s favourite is the classic tabbouleh, which he says is ‘a fresh, bright and sparkling dish, just like its country.’ Lebanese cuisine is ‘a
cuisine of sun, summer, fresh produce … a little meat, a lot of vegetables … healthy and fresh,’ enthuses Mouzawak. As well as international interest, there has also been a resurgence at home, as the Lebanese re-engage with their own food. ‘We are rediscovering traditions,’ says Mouzawak. Restaurateurs are becoming more adventurous, whether by embracing home cooking and regional dishes, as at Tawlet, by combining classic meze with modern

fine dining, or by embracing elements from other cuisines. Enab is one of the most stylish venues in town. The restaurant’s pastel walls, quirky light fittings and mismatched furniture create a charming aesthetic indoors that’s just the right side of kitsch. Outdoors, a colourful striped awning provides cover for diners, and joints of meat are roasted over an open fire. All manner of meze dishes can be sampled here, including vibrant salads and cold snacks such as hummus served with freshly baked flatbreads or stuffed
vine leaves. Warm dishes include fattet battenjain, a delicious aubergine casserole with yoghurt. Enab is an Instagrammer’s dream; the clientele here is eclectic and every guest is guaranteed a warm welcome. It’s a wonderful example of modern Beirut. Liza is another excellent venue for modern Lebanese cuisine. The restaurant is housed in a historic building, the design of which is just as attractive as its food. Created by designer Maria Ousseimi, the interior combines elements of traditional 19th-

century Lebanese houses with idiosyncratic modern touches, such as a suspended flying elephant and bold printed wallpaper. ‘Liza isn’t only about the food,’ says co-founder Liza Asseily. ‘It’s a lifestyle brand that has been created to merge Lebanese design, culture and cuisine all in one place.’ Asseily insists, however, that the design is secondary to the eating experience. ‘The food remains our number one focus and priority,’ she says. ‘Our aim is to share Lebanese cuisine the way we love it: fresh, light and generous.’

For dinner, the outstanding selection of meze includes a perfectly balanced tabbouleh and a divine hummus with pine nuts and lamb. Asseily’s favourite is Liza’s signature kharouf bi khams bharrat (lamb shank with spiced rice and
dried fruits), and she also recommends the halloumi with homemade tomato jam. ‘We constantly work on creative adaptations of traditional dishes and we also work on collaborations with exceptional chefs,’ she says. Creative twists on traditional Lebanese dishes are not limited to Liza. ‘The Lebanese food scene
has definitely evolved,’ says Asseily. ‘We see new adaptations and new techniques. We see new ideas inspired by other worldwide cuisines.’ Across the city other restaurants and cafés are adopting similar approaches, making this a wonderful time to get a taste for Beirut. For Asseily, the current interest in Lebanese is largely thanks to meze. ‘The trend of food sharing is picking up in the world,’ she says. ‘It brings people together and creates a lovely atmosphere.’ Grab some friends and tuck in

بمج ّرد التفكير باألزياء الفريدة المص ّممة بحسب الطلب أي الكوتور ،تتراءى باريس إلى ذهنك .إال أنّه على بُعد أربعة آالف كيلومت ٍر منها ،يشكّل لبنان أرضاً خصبة لمجموعة صاعدة من مص ّممي الكوتور .انبثق مجال األزياء المص ّممة بحسب الطلب من للمتوسط وها هو ينبض حاليّاً بالحياة .ساهم سفراء الجهة الشرقيّة ّ على سبيل Elie Saabفي توسيع نطاقه العالمي .أ ّما العالمات األقل عراق ًة فتحظى أيضاً باالنتباه وتجذب أسما ًء كبرى وتبرز على ّ الس ّجادات الحمراء أو في مناسبات رفيعة المستوى .على سبيل المثال ،ارتدت مص ّممة األزياء Ekaterina Malysheva ثوبا ً مص ّمما ً بحسب طلبها لدى المص ّممة اللّبنانيّة Sandra Mansourارتدته يوم زفافها إلى األمير Ernest August of .Hanover شهدت السنوات العشرين األخيرة ثورة كوتور في لبنان .وقد كان المص ّمم Georges Chakraرائدا ً في المجال ،وهو الذي عرض ابتكاراته في أسبوع باريس للكوتور .يشعر Chakraبصلة وثيقة بين بلده األ ّم وعمله فيقول" :يعمل المزيج بين الشرقي المتوسط، والغربي على صقل تصاميمي .بحكم موقع لبنان على ّ يزخر بألوان دافئة وبتد ّرجات لوني األصفر والبرتقالي .ونظرا ً لهذا اإلرث ،أفضّ ل األلوان البارزة وأُدخلها في معظم مجموعات الكوتور الحب للبنان هو القاسم المشترك الذي يو ّحد التي أنفّذها ".وهذا ّ مص ّممي البالد البارزين فترى تعلّقهم بوطنهم واضحاً تماماً وغالباً ما يؤث ّر على تصاميمهم. درس Tony Wardواكتسب الخبرة في فرنسا وعمل لدى أشهر األسماء في تلك الفترة؛ Lanvinو Diorو .Chloéلكن يبقى والؤه األكبر لبلده األ ّم .يقول في هذا الصدد" :لبنان بلدي وبيتي والمكان الذي ترعرعت فيه .كنت متأكّدا ً أنّني سأعود يوماً، لك ّنها كانت مسألة وقت ".وبيروت بالنسبة إلى " Wardإحدى ُعي العواصم العالميّة للكوتور" .إنّه أحد نجومها الساطعة وقد د َ أيضاً للعرض في أسبوع باريس للكوتور. لعائلة Wardشغف قديم بالمالبس الجميلة .أٍّ ّسس الخاص به سنة .1952يعلّق والده Elie Wardدار التصميم ّ Tony Wardقائالً" :قَصدَته أرقى نساء المدينة ليص ّمم له ّن مالبس للمناسبات المه ّمة .بالتالي كبرت ُمحاطاً باألقمشة الجميلة والخياطة تسري في عروقي ،فكان ال ب ّد أن أتأث ّر بهذا المحيط". قبل Wardالتحدّي وأٍّ ّسس عالمته التجاريّة التي تحمل إسمه سنة .1997ويقول" :الواقع أ ّن شغف والدي بعمله وتفانيه في سبيل زبائنه ألهماني للسير على هذا المسار". لكن ليس دار Tony Wardالوحيد ذي الطابع العائلي. خرا ً ابنته Jennifer فقد ض ّم Georges Chakraمؤ ّ Chakraإلى الفريق .يقول سعيدا ً" :سنة بعد أخرى ،باتوا موظّفيني عائلتي الجديدة .وهو لحلم يتحقّق بأن يقوم شخص بكفاءة إبنتي بنقل العالمة إلى األجيال ال ُمقبلة". جيل جديد على أت ّم استعداد لتعزيز أيضاً وأيضاً ،ث ّمة ٌ
