SHINING OUT For decades the Lebanese jewellery scene has been quietly, beautifully thriving. As Beirut-based jewellers produce more outstanding pieces than ever, their designs are now being recognised across the world. Lucinda Turner reports Left: Yeprem 2018 collection

ebanese women have long sought out the beautifully crafted, original jewellery made in the country. Now they are being joined by clients from across the world – including stars such as Jennifer Lopez, Madonna, Rihanna and Beyoncé, all fans of Lebanese jewellery brand Yeprem. Founded in 1964 by Yeprem Chakademian, this family business took its most creative turn yet when the second generation, Chakademian’s three children,
came on board. Yeprem’s philosophy has always focused on creating pieces of jewellery that not only move in sync with a woman’s body but curve to fit it perfectly. The brand’s striking hand bracelets and its rings that twist and turn around the whole length of a finger have become a signature look that keeps Yeprem’s loyal customers coming back again and again. The brand’s collections are comprised almost entirely of white diamond pieces
set in white or rose gold. For those looking for a modern, architectural take on classic high jewellery, Yeprem is a brilliant place to start. The brand’s offering is constantly evolving and changing to meet the demands of Lebanon’s most discerning customers. ‘The jewellery industry is a dynamic and a fast-growing one, therefore we continuously strive to develop ourselves and be responsive to trends, in order to craft distinguished and innovative designs,’ says Chakademian. ‘The Lebanese jewellery scene in the last couple of years has progressed and seems to have a bright future.’ It’s not hard to discover the brands who are spearheading that bright future. Launched in 2015, Gaelle Khouri’s eponymous brand has quickly become a name to know on the international scene, stocked in some of the most prestigious department stores in the world from Paris to London as well as on Net-A-Porter; but it is in Lebanon that Khouri’s creations come into being. Her high jewellery pieces take inspiration from the natural world, from delicate floral creations to quirky octopus diamond earrings; this is jewellery that refuses to take itself too seriously. For her latest collection, The Next Perspective, Khouri joins Yeprem’s school
of thinking, creating pieces that work with the curves of the body and sit in beautiful yet unexpected places. Highlights include earrings that contour the ear from top to bottom; rings that fall from the thumb knuckle down to the wrist; and necklaces whose sculptural rings dance off the neck. ‘I’m fascinated by philosophy and the intangible realm of the mind and thoughts,’ says Khouri. ‘The Next Perspective uses circles that are layered and intertwined – much like the synapses of the mind – to form wearable pieces.’ This utterly modern aesthetic gives the pieces, crafted in rose gold and diamonds, a sense of intrigue that will undoubtedly make each one a talking point. Ralph Masri is another Lebanese jeweller making sculptural statements. Having founded his own label in 2011, Masri has gone on to win multiple awards across the Middle East and has been picked up by international e-commerce platform Moda Operandi. His often colourful creations are the result of his love of both fine and fashion jewellery. Masri’s range offers quirky, striking designs realised in 18-carat gold set with precious stones such as emeralds, sapphires and diamonds. These are truly luxurious pieces, but made to be worn every day. Though Masri’s designs appeal to an

Beirut’s varied jewellers are creating exquisite, daring and stunning pieces international audience, he is always keen to honour his Middle Eastern origins. With the brand’s Arabesque Deco collection, for example, symmetrical motifs seen throughout the architecture of Beirut can be seen in fine jewels, a fitting tribute to the jeweller’s home town. ‘Lebanon has always been at the forefront of design in the region,’ he says. ‘That is especially evident in the field of jewellery, which is fast evolving, with Lebanese designers leading the way.’ A stalwart of Beirut’s jewellery scene, Himo has been making beautiful jewellery for over 40 years and has 14 branches across the city. The brand is known for jewels for the significant moments in life, from engagement rings to 21st birthday presents. In recent years, it has become dedicated to offering the innovative alongside the traditional. The classic Middle-Eastern talisman bracelets and simple solitaire rings are still big sellers, but
the brand has also begun bejewelling some of Lebanon’s biggest stars for the Cannes Film Festival and creating exquisite one-off high jewellery sets for its most special customers. Himo also focuses strongly on wedding jewellery. The Princess collection comprises elegant earrings, necklaces and rings featuring round brilliant diamonds set in 18-carat white gold. Whether worn with a stunning white gown from one of Lebanon’s many bridal designers or teamed with jeans and a T-shirt to make the ordinary extraordinary, the Princess collection is certain to be admired. Presenting Mediterranean cuisine with a Lebanese twist, chef Athanasios Kargatzidis is famous for his octopus, courgette and risotto dishes and the restaurant is known for attracting a stylish crowd. The menu is experimental and highly memorable, with a strong vegetarian selection that includes cauliflower garnished with tahini, walnut and pomegranate. Slow-cooked lamb shank, braised into melting tenderness over 24 hours, is served with creamy risotto. This is a perfect dining place for a group of friends or family, yet can be delightfully intimate for a couple. الصدارة يف طريقها نحو ذلك املستقبل .ال ب ّد من اإلشارة هنا أسستها حاملة اإلسم إىل عالمة Gaelle Khouriالتي ّ نفسه سنة 2015وما لبثت أن وصلت إىل العامليّة وإىل بعض أرقى املتاجر الكربى حول العامل ،من باريس إىل لندن، باإلضافة إىل موقع .Net-A-Porterلكن يبقى لبنان منشأ هذه االبتكارات .قطع Khouriمستوحاة من الطبيعة ،من ابتكارات ناعمة بشكل أزهار إىل أقراط فريدة من املاس عىل كل البعد عن الجديّة. شكل أخطبوط .إنّها مجوهرات بعيدة ّ يف مجموعتها األخرية ،The Next Perspective تعتمد Khouriأسلوباً مشابهاً لـ ،Yepremفتبتكر قطعاً تتناغم مع تضاريس الجسم وتنسكب يف مواقع جميلة لكن غري متوقّعة .من التصاميم املميّزة أٌقراط متت ّد عىل طول األذن؛ تتدىل من اإلبهام حتّى املعصم؛ وعقود تتألّف من وخواتم ّ حلقات مبتكرة ترتاقص بزه ٍو حول الرقبة .تقول :Khouri “تلفتني الفلسفة وعامل العقل واألفكار غري امللموس .تستخدم ٍ حلقات متداخلة مجموعة The Next Perspective مثل نقاط التشابك العصبيّة يف الدماغ ،لتشكّل قطعاً ميكن
