Beirut-based jeweller Selim Mouzannar adores the city he calls home. Taking inspiration from the former Ottoman empire, its art and its architecture, his eponymous brand has become known globally for its intricate, stunning designs. DRESS to IMPRESS High-octane glamour makes Lebanese designs a fixture on the red carpet. Rebecca Rhys-Evans introduces some of Beirut’s best bespoke
Sequin embellishment and embroidery, floor-length satin, thigh-high splits – features such as these radiate the sizzling elegance that characterises Lebanese bespoke fashion. Lebanese style is a sophisticated, dynamic blend of Arab, Roman, Ottoman and Western influences. ‘Being on the Mediterranean, Lebanon is a link in the chain between East and West, and this has helped us from the beginning to merge arts and styles from both spheres,’ says designer Georges Chakra, who shows his collections at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week. Beirut is much influenced by French architecture, food and design, so it’s no wonder that the French affinity with fashion is also reflected in the city, which is often
referred to as the Paris of the Middle East. Internationally acclaimed designers such as Elie Saab, Mohammed Ashi of Ashi Studio, Zuhair Murad and Chakra himself are based in the Lebanese capital. If Beirut is the Paris of the Middle East, then Hamra street is its Champs-Élysées. Here you’ll find some of the best restaurants, theatres and, of course, boutiques that Beirut has to offer. ‘Where painting and sculpting have always been in the limelight, fashion is the art du jour, and more and more creatives are focusing their talents in this domain,’ explains Chakra. The maximalist, high-octane glamour of Lebanese fashion thrives on the red carpet. Major names such as Elie Saab and Zuhair Murad count stars such as Beyoncé, Jennifer

Lopez and Taylor Swift among the fans who wear their designs to award ceremonies. Elie Saab is probably the most famous Lebanese couturier. He started sewing at the age of 10, and launched his own label when he was just 18 years old. Fusing the modern silhouettes of Western design with the elaborate Middle Eastern flair for embellishment, Saab quickly became popular among royalty, including Queen Rania of Jordan, who wore one of his dresses for her enthronement. He was also the first Middle Eastern designer to dress an Oscar winner, Halle Berry in 2002, and the following year he was invited to join the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, now the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, the French organisation that administers the strict rules which govern couture. Today the Elie Saab label is a thriving empire that extends over fragrance, footwear and accessories, and has boutiques in London, Paris and Dubai as well as Beirut. Georges Chakra also has ties to Hollywood, reflecting his A-list customer base. His autumn/winter 2019/20 collection paid homage
to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood’s Golden Age, and Hollywood heroines such as Rita Hayworth and Audrey Hepburn inspired the fabrics, colours and styles. Sumptuous duchess satin, opulent organza and embroidered tulle come in a variety of metallics, crafted into balloon sleeves and asymmetric lengths. ‘The brand and the collections every season are inspired by strong fierce women, who embrace the new and the innovative,’ he tells us. Couture may appear to be the epitome of tradition, perfectly and predictably feminine. Enter Ashi, a studio which brings Beirut style into a new era and plays with the concept of couture. Founder Mohammad Ashi takes the luxury fabrics and exaggerated silhouettes of couture and fuses them with modern trends. Leopard print, shorter cuts, trouser suits and jumpsuits make an appearance in Ashi Studio’s autumn/winter 2019/20 collection, setting it apart from other Lebanese labels. Lebanon is a place where two worlds meet, and this duality extends to its couture and bespoke fashion scene. While clients expect extravagance and elegance, it’s also vital to

stay fresh and marketable. Creative force and commercial appeal are equally important, according to Lebanese couture designer Zuhair Murad. ‘You can’t have one and not the other, but you have to find a balance,’ Murad told Vogue Arabia. ‘You simply can’t create all of your pieces just for the museum.’ Remaining in Beirut rather than migrating abroad to Milan or Paris is significant to Murad – as it is to many other notable Lebanese designers. ‘It is still my city,’ he says. ‘It’s an open city, it’s very close to Europe, and now, with social media, it doesn’t matter where you are – you can be from Honolulu and still reach an audience.’ With their show-stopping bridal gowns and award-winning dresses for the red carpet, Lebanese couture and bespoke designers bring a rich combination of traditions and cultures to the catwalk.
