H I O S N A F FOUNDATION For 10 years the Starch foundation has been supporting and promoting emerging designers in Lebanon. Hannah Lewis speaks to the founders and alumni of this game-changing non-profit organisation
‘It was never really a plan, it just came so organically and naturally,’ says Tala Hajjar of the decision to establish the Starch foundation in 2008. She and co-founder Rabih Kayrouz, the respected fashion designer, both have years of experience in the Lebanese fashion industry. Both had often been approached by young designers for help and mentorship, not just in creative terms but also with a view to building their fledgling careers. ‘The industry is very difficult for someone who is starting out,’ explains Hajjar. ‘You don’t learn this stuff in design school so they would come to us for advice. So eventually we thought, OK, it would be really good to help them further by giving them a space to showcase their work.’ Thus began Starch, a unique foundation that
supports emerging Lebanese designers not just in developing their impressive creative talents but also in growing and promoting their labels as businesses. When it came to finding the right space for Starch, Hajjar and Kayrouz found the perfect partner in Solidere, a Lebanese firm focused on redeveloping central Beirut. Solidere saw the potential of Starch and gave the founding duo a space – free of charge to this day – which they transformed into the Starch boutique. Starch designers have been showcased here ever since. The programme supports four to six promising young designers each year, guiding them through the process of developing their collections, promoting them and, in the process, teaching them about marketing,

communication, branding and press. The resulting collections are then presented for one year at the boutique, a cutting-edge space which is revamped annually, making the store an unmissable destination for anyone looking to discover new design talent in Beirut. Another boutique to look out for is Starched. Located in Beirut Souks, the space was launched to showcase the work of the programme’s alumni. One such designer is Roni Helou, who Hajjar contacted after seeing his thesis show. ‘She encouraged me to apply to Starch 2017,’ explains Helou. ‘Once accepted, I began working on the first collection under the mentorship of Rabih Kayrouz.’ For Helou, the support has been invaluable. ‘Rabih and Tala have been very supportive throughout the past year and have allowed me to gain a bigger platform on a regional level,’ he says. ‘As a member of Starch, I got to launch my first collection during Fashion Forward Dubai, which allowed me to go backstage in the fashion industry. Furthermore, I was offered the Starch boutique for an entire year to sell my pieces, which ensured a better understanding of my market through direct contact with clients. Now that my brand has gained exposure regionally, I am working towards expanding

Perhaps the most impressive thing about Starch is that Hajjar and Kayrouz work with practically no funding. While Solidere is committed to the project and continues to sponsor the boutique, almost every other aspect relies on donations of time, finances or other services. ‘The website is donated by an agency, the British Council supported us, the Arab British Centre took us to London for the exhibition – everything we’ve done relates to our people’s philanthropic interests,’ explains Hajjar. ‘There are really no financial transactions at all with Starch. Which is quite difficult – but this is how we operate.’ Nevertheless, the dynamic duo is committed to continuing with Starch. ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,’ says Hajjar. ‘Just do things better and I think today as we stand, we love what we are doing and how we are doing things.’ They are, after all, providing much-needed support to creatives working in a tough field. The fashion industry, as Hajjar says, is a business, and getting to grips with that is ‘extremely time-consuming and takes away from a designer’s focus on creativity and genius. it internationally. I am planning to present my autumn/winter 2018/19 collection during Paris Fashion Week.’ Though Hajjar and Kayrouz are still committed to going out and finding talent themselves (‘I hunt them down!’ jokes Hajjar), the prestige of Starch means that many of its designers apply independently. Timi Hayek sent in her own application and was thrilled when Hajjar and Kayrouz saw her potential. ‘They provided a wonderful base to launch my brand, providing a shop to sell my work and the right exposure all over Lebanon and the Middle East for a full year,’ says Hayek. ‘I got to meet clients first hand and test the market.’ The young designer also benefited from Starch’s involvement in international fashion events. ‘I launched my brand at Fashion Forward Dubai, I participated in an exhibition at Somerset House in London, and I was part of the Woolmark competition in Dubai last year with a fellow Starch designer,’ recounts Hayek. She has since opened her own boutique in Beirut, proving that the programme achieves real business results.

2. AÏSHTI FOUNDATION The Aïshti Foundation is part of a vast 35,000-square-metre complex that includes fashion boutiques, a bookshop, restaurants, cafés, a spa and a rooftop bar. The Foundation showcases works from the 2,000-piece personal art collection of Tony Salamé, founder of market-leading Lebanese luxury specialist Aïshti. This collection represents more than 300 artists and spans painting, sculpture, drawing, video and new media; seasonal 99

Committed to the promotion of contemporary art, the Beirut Art Center is one of the city’s most respected cultural organisations. Across its two floors and 1,500 square metres, the BAC offers space to both local and international artists, displaying works in a wide range of media with a focus on photography and video. The centre has no permanent collection, but instead offers a rotating programme of exhibitions, which range from solo shows by established names (recently the acclaimed visual artist Francis Alÿs) to a yearly showcase of young and emerging artists, aptly named Exposure. 3. MARFA Marfa was founded in 2015 by Joumana Asseily, whose experience of Beirut’s independent art scene encouraged her to set up a programme that would support local artists. Asseily works with emerging and mid-career Lebanese artists to present projects based around central ideas that engage with the city’s diverse contemporary art scene. The gallery is located in two former garages near the customs house in the neighbourhood from which it takes its name – marfa is the Arabic word for port. The gallery helps local artists to build international links, and also provides a platform in Beirut for the work of exciting international artists. Exhibitions in this intimate space change every few months, and have covered everything from photography to painting to abstract sculpture. Plan Bey is not an art gallery, but an independent publisher specialising in artists’ multiples, books and prints. Rather than original pieces, its exhibition and retail spaces offer Plan Bey’s own editions and publications, all of which have been developed in its workshop in direct collaboration with Beirut artists. This is a fantastic place to discover the works of local creatives, offering posters, cards, books, photographic prints and more, with each piece produced locally on a small scale. 4. SURSOCK MUSEUM Completed in 1912, the Sursock mansion was originally home to the aristocrat Nicolas Sursock, an art lover who bequeathed the building to the city on his death in 1952. In 1961, the space reopened as the Sursock Museum, aiming to collect, preserve and exhibit local and international art. The building’s stunning façade combines Venetian and Ottoman architectural styles, making it one of the most impressive in the city. Inside, you’ll find varied collections covering everything from late Ottoman artworks to historic photographs of the Middle East, and an amazing array of modern and contemporary art, focusing on creatives from Lebanon. It is thus no surprise that the Sursock frequently hosts some of the most exciting exhibitions in the city. The museum was extensively renovated in recent years, and since its reopening in 2015 it has served as a celebration of the renewed artistic spirit of Beirut. Artlab promotes young and emerging artists from the Middle East and beyond Located in the on-trend Gemmayze neighbourhood of Beirut, Artlab was created in order to promote young and emerging artists from the Middle East and beyond. Focusing on contemporary figurative and abstract art, the team believes that art should be engaging and vivid. Consequently, exhibitions often bring together artists with differing visions and artworks of various media. The space is also home to a permanent collection of works by around 20 artists, many of whom have come to Lebanon from Syria, making this a unique insight into contemporary art in the region. املبارش مع الزبائن .اليوم ،وقد باتت عالمتي معروفة عىل مستوى إقليمي ،أعمل عىل توسيع نطاقها عامليّاً .أنوي عرض مجموعة خريف/ شتاء 2018/2019يف أسبوع باريس للموضة”. بالرغم من التزام Hajjarو Kayrouzحتّى اليوم بالبحث عن املواهب شخصيّاً (تقول Hajjarمامزح ًة “أصطادهم!) ،تجذب Starchبرقيّها الكثري من املص ّممني الذين يتقدّمون بطلبات من تلقاء نفسهم .ومنهم Timi Hayekالتي تقدّمت بطلب وغمرتها الفرحة عندما الحظ Kayrouzو Hajjarقدراتها .تقول :Hayek محل “منحاين قاعدة ممتازة ألطلق عالمتي وذلك من خالل تقديم ّ ومنصة تُربزها لسنة كاملة يف كافّة أرجاء لبنان والرشق ألبيع تصاميمي ّ األوسط .بهذه الطريقة التقيت الزبائن شخصيّاً واختربت السوق”. كام استفادت املص ّممة الصاعدة من مشاركة Starchيف أنشطة عامليّة تُعنى باألزياء .تعدّد البعض منها قائلة“ :أطلقت عالمتي يف Fashion Forward Dubaiوكنت جزءا ً من معرض يف Somerset Houseيف لندن ،كام شاركت يف مسابقة Woolmarkيف ديب السنة املاضية مع مص ّمم زميل من ”.Starch يف األعىل Roni Helou :ربيع/صيف 2018
