Paola Sakr, a Beirut-based multidisciplinary designer, founded her studio in 2016, after studying product design at the Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts fine arts academy. All of her projects set out to make a positive contribution to the world, environmentally or socially – or simply by creating something beautiful. Impermanence is a series of seven concrete vases made from discarded materials found on construction sites; Morning Ritual (pictured) is a collection of biodegradable containers, crafted from coffee grounds and newspaper; Quantum consists of clay vessels that evoke architectural constructions. This is a momentous year for Buccellati, marking 100 years since founder Mario Buccellati opened the brand’s first boutique in Milan – making 2019 the perfect opportunity to revisit some of Buccellati’s best designs. Middle Eastern designers have reinvented the clutch bag as a highly desirable art form. Fani Mari profiles the names to know If you are seeking a clutch bag that’s akin to an item of jewellery or a piece of art – an accessory that will take both day and evening outfits to a new level – then Lebanon is the place to look. Lebanese brands, along with labels from the country’s Middle Eastern neighbours, are reinventing the clutch and the results are highly desirable. The roots of the clutch can be found in the minaudière, a small metal bag often carried on a chain; its invention is attributed to jeweller Charles Arpels of Van Cleef & Arpels. Arpels
was inspired in the 1920s by a stylish female friend who carried her essentials in a cigarette tin, and developed the idea into the concept of a ‘precious case’ just large enough to transport everything needed for an evening on the town. Minaudières caught on, and prestigious brands such as Tiffany and Cartier have since created their own versions. The next stage was the evolution of the clutch bag, with similarly compact dimensions, designed to be carried in the hand – hence the name. Today, entire brands specialise in the clutch, and have gained international followings for their witty, playful designs, which intrigue, amuse and delight, to the extent that some can be considered as works of art. Beirut is a great location to discover new and up-and-coming brands that elevate the simple clutch bag to new levels, using artisanal techniques and embellishments such as semi-

precious stones to create products that stand out. Many designers that are based in or around Lebanon have amassed international followings for their statement, eye-catching styles. Brands to know include the eponymous label of Beirutborn, Dubai-based Nathalie Trad; Bahraini NS by Noof; Marzook, founded by a Kuwaiti brother-and-sister team and based in Beirut; and Sarah’s Bag, founded and headquartered in the city. Nathalie Trad’s chic, tactile designs, many of which are beautifully crafted in stone, shell and metal, are a perfect example of the clutch as art form. Trad explains that she treats accessory design as a ‘puzzle’. ‘How do I take traditional shapes, ubiquitous in our everyday lives and radically transform them, deconstructing and recreating them from a new perspective?’ she asks. ‘I didn’t want to just create accessories, I wanted to create wearable sculptures that broke away from the mould.’ Noof Al Shekar, founder of NS by Noof, says that she aims to combine jewellery with fashion when she creates her clutches; she thus focuses her designs on geometric lines and sparkling chains. ‘I started by adding some framed semi-precious stones to leather clutches and this evolved into a geometric piece of art,’ she explains. Marzook designs are versatile as well as elegant. ‘The Marzook bag is a special art piece carried daily or for special events,’ says Shouq Al-Marzook, the female half of the duo behind the brand, adding that one client who purchased a Lucid Classic, the brand’s bestselling transparent sphereshaped clutch, loved it so much that she sent the designers a photo of it securely strapped into her car with a seatbelt. ‘It is unlike other handbags – it is a showstopper piece when you add it to your outfit. It will turn heads and start conversations,’ says Al-Marzook. Sarah Beydoun of Sarah’s Bag also pays tribute to the allure of the clutch. ‘Every woman should have a standout statement bag, a go-to piece that is striking and vibrant and can instantly uplift any outfit, from chic jeans to a favourite cocktail dress. Beydoun has focused on values as well as style ever since she launched her brand nearly two decades ago; her eye-catching designs are created in collaboration with an organisation that rehabilitates former women prisoners and other vulnerable women, giving them work, an income, and purpose. Beydoun’s work isn’t just about beautiful looks, but also about supporting her community, and creating designs connected with local culture, using traditional techniques such as marquetry and beading, and characteristically Middle Eastern motifs. ‘I felt I was there to help and the solution I found was to empower these women by creating job opportunities for them,’ she recalls. ‘With the help of underprivileged women, we are creating luxuriously handcrafted handbags and accessories that are unique statement pieces.’ These brands have a common denominator: strong, independent female designers who treat bags as artworks for their equally empowered clients.
