Charm School

London-based fine jeweller Loquet brings together two age-old jewellery traditions – charms and lockets – to create modern pieces that last a lifetime. Founded by Sheherazade Goldsmith and model Laura Bailey in 2013, the brand was inspired by the idea of using lockets to store special memories. As an alternative to a traditional photograph memento, at Loquet you can choose from over 150 miniature charms to create something unique to you. Options for personalising these beautiful crystal-faced lockets range from initials to animals, birth stones to classic symbols of luck and love, Save up to 19% by shopping tax free, see page 53

and even a diamond-encrusted avocado. When Riccardo Tisci’s appointment at Burberry was announced, fans of the brand and the designer predicted they were in for something special. With the TB bag heralded as an instant classic, it looks like they were right, as Lucinda Turner reports

Just weeks before chief creative officer Riccardo Tisci’s much anticipated debut catwalk show for Burberry, a series of emails were leaked via Instagram, giving the world its first glimpse of the Italian designer’s vision for the historic British brand. A new logo was revealed along with an all-new monogram, utilising founder Thomas Burberry’s initials, and a whole new identity for the brand. The key benchmark of any luxury label is its signature handbags, and Burberry’s TB bag garnered huge acclaim when it was launched. Incorporating the new monogram design, the style premiered at the brand’s spring/summer 2019 show and is now in its second season, having proved a sure-fire hit. Its very first iteration was as a fashionforward belt bag, redefining the idea of the classic ‘It’ bag aesthetic, with other versions following later. A timeless top-flap style with the extra-large TB logo sitting in prime position, this handbag is built to last, not follow passing trends. Now available in more than 40 globalblue.com

different variations including multiple sizes, colourways and materials, the TB bag offers something for every Burberry customer. Whether you want to make a statement with an all-over monogrammed style or keep things simple with tan or black leather, there is a design to suit everyone. For autumn/winter 2019/20, the Burberry catwalk featured bags emblazoned with oversized logos, newly introduced satchel detailing and even a decadent scattering of sequins, proving that a brilliantly designed handbag can be the starting point for endless creativity. The TB bag is certain to be a staple of the Burberry brand, and your wardrobe, for years to come. AHEAD OF TIME Luxury Swiss watchmaker Roger Dubuis has opened a new boutique on Mayfair’s Bond Street. The brand chose London as the location for this new store because of the city’s inherent duality, and its combination of respect for heritage and progressive attitude is reminiscent of the Roger Dubuis DNA. The store – the brand’s third in Europe – sets out to be as elegant as its watches, with details such as wood panelling and sumptuous furniture. Founded in 1995, Roger Dubuis specialises in architectural skeletonised movements, with its pioneering and perfect timepieces offering exquisite style and precise timekeeping. Look out for the classic Excalibur and Velvet collections, which are highlights in the world of contemporary watchmaking. rre Roger Dubuis, 45A Old Bond Street, London W1S 4QT, +44 (0)20 3692 0399, rogerdubuis.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 44

BIGGER AND BETTER Following a makeover, Chopard’s London boutique reopened in summer 2019 and the welcoming flagship store is the brand’s largest retail space in Europe. It has been redesigned and enlarged, and, in keeping with Chopard’s other boutiques, is anchored in its location. Emulating a private residence, the store is divided into luxury lounges, complete with sofas and statement fireplaces, that showcase the label’s stunning Haute Horlogerie, Haute Joaillerie and engagement jewellery collections. As the first brand to use 100% ethical gold across all of its pieces, Chopard also adopted a sustainable approach to the store design, using environmentally friendly elements in the refurbishment. grc Chopard, 12-13 New Bond Street, London W1S 3SS, +44 (0)20 7046 7808, chopard.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 43

Luc Goidadin presented his inaugural collection for autumn/winter 2019/20 as the new creative director of Smythson. Notions of British eclecticism and the brand’s heritage serve as the starting point for the new range. Elements from the brand’s archive are reinvented in exciting ways, such as the label’s Concertina bags, based on a 1910 visiting card bag of the same name. Elsewhere, the twisted barrel design of a 1912 silver pen inspired a monogram print that appears on bags and silk scarves. Stationery prints from the archives feature across a wide range of products, from backgammon cases to watch rolls. This season’s designs by Goidadin celebrate Smythson’s rich heritage and craftsmanship with a dose of quintessential British charm. grc Smythson, 131-132 New Bond Street, London W1S 2TB, +44 (0)20 3535 8009, smythson.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 43 Save up to 19% by shopping tax free, see page 53

10 QUESTIONS WITH: ANYA HINDMARCH Since founding her eponymous label over 30 years ago, Anya Hindmarch has become the name to know on London’s fashion scene for stylish luxury accessories with a sense of pure joy. Here, the designer discusses personalisation, pushing boundaries and the importance of laughter, with Lucinda Turner HAS THE BRAND CHANGED SINCE IT WAS FOUNDED IN 1987? Someone once told me that ‘brand’ is the most overused word and that ‘behaviour’ is the most underused. I try not to over-think it. There is a great quote from Oscar Wilde that says, ‘Be yourself, everyone else is already taken’ – I think it says it all. I just do what I am passionate about and enjoy the journey. It’s fantastically hard work but worth every second.

2.

YOUR CARTOON EYES MOTIF HAS BECOME A SIGNATURE FEATURE. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO INJECT A SENSE OF FUN INTO FASHION? Laughter is our lifeblood at AH HQ, which I think comes through in the product – laughter and cake. Fashion is an incredibly important business but we aren’t saving lives – I think it should make you smile. What you put on in the morning can quite literally change the mood you woke up in.

3.

HOW IMPORTANT IS PERSONALISATION TO ANYA HINDMARCH? Our brand has always had personalisation as a key part of its DNA. Even in my very first store, which I worked in, we would make bags in different colours and with the perfect length strap for a customer’s needs. As shoppers we’ve never wanted instant gratification more and I think the success of Build a Bag, Pimp Your Phone and Stickers possibly comes down to people not wanting to be the same as everyone else anymore. Personalisation makes a piece unique and totally yours, and can make a beautiful and seriously made piece lighthearted.

4.

WHAT ROLE DO YOUR PROJECTS OUTSIDE OF RETAIL PLAY, SUCH AS THE WEAVE PROJECT AND CHUBBY HEARTS FOR LONDON FASHION WEEK? We made the decision to move to a series of seasonal events that allow our customers to purchase items from the collections as they are unveiled. It feels like the right, modern way for us to work. It’s a new toy for me to play with and a way to amplify our creativity. For spring/ summer 2018 we launched Chubby Hearts over London, a public design project which launched on Valentine’s Day as a surprise declaration of love to the city and continued as a celebration of London Fashion Week. Giant Chubby Heart balloons were suspended over (and sometimes squashed within) 30 famous London landmarks and prominent locations across the city. It was truly a labour of love and really

touched Londoners. Since then we have created immersive four-day events for London Fashion Week. The Chubby Cloud saw the world’s largest bean bag installed at Banqueting Hall, which enveloped 3,000 visitors (quite literally) while they listened to music, meditations, talks and bedtime stories. The Weave Project was a giant art installation that customers were able to climb through. We are touching people in a way that is about more than just seeing things. I’m interested in creating innovative experiences for the industry and the public to participate in.

5.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR NEW COLLECTIONS? I’m a big believer in feeding your brain. It is amazing how ideas bank and come to fruition at some much-later point. People inspire me, as well as architecture and travel (and chocolate). Seasonally we are inspired by everyday, familiar items (often food-related) such as cereals or biscuits. Our classic crisp packet clutch is based on a simple crisp packet and recreated in brass, which takes seven moulds and is handcrafted. It’s like a wearable piece of art. I love the subtle humour that’s created when things are used in an unexpected way. I’m always looking to treat the everyday ordinary in an extraordinary way, using beautiful materials and craftsmanship.

6.

WHY DID YOU EXPAND INTO THE HOME FRAGRANCE MARKET? I have always dreamed of starting a fragrance line. We decided to launch Anya Hindmarch Smells with a collection of candles and they are to do with memories and the feeling you get from a smell. My obsession has always been the combination of playfulness and irreverence with the critical ingredient of craftsmanship. And this is just the beginning – it’s so exciting, we have lots of really quite odd ideas that will come out.

7.

WHICH ANYA HINDMARCH PIECE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO A NEW CUSTOMER? That’s like asking me to choose between my children!

8.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE FOR AUTUMN/WINTER 2019/20? We just launched the Post Box bag, which is

Above: Anya Hindmarch Post Box bag

exquisitely constructed around a handmade vintage-gold frame. It’s made in one of the world’s leading Italian factories and takes many hours of skilled craftmanship to create. I love the fact that it can be chic for more formal occasions or equally could be worn cross-body with your favourite pair of jeans.

9.

HOW IMPORTANT IS ECOMMERCE TO YOUR BRAND? Customers are increasingly shopping through ecommerce, Instagram and online outlets. Through social media the expectation is that you should be able to have something at the click of a button and we need to respond to that and give our customers what they want, when they want it. I think that the fashion industry is undergoing a huge shift and it’s exciting, this changing shopping pattern is challenging the norms and creates opportunities for new ways of doing things.

10.

WHERE ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PLACES TO SHOP IN LONDON – ASIDE FROM ANYA HINDMARCH OF COURSE? Moens butcher, which is near our office, Nardulli for ice cream, Cutler and Gross for glasses, Green & Stone for pencils, The Design Museum website for gifts, Arthur Beale for inspiration. Christopher Raeburn’s four Rs – Raemade, Raeduced, Raecycled and Raeburn – inform every part of its high-fashion aesthetic, with surplus fabrics and garments reimagined through the label’s innovative and responsible lens as useful, functional and playful pieces. Mayfair is just a stone’s throw from Selfridges, and the area has plenty to offer when it comes to luxury fashion with a conscience. Here you’ll find the boutiques of several Italian brands that showcase sustainability as part of their DNA, including Brunello Cucinelli, Loro Piana and Ermenegildo Zegna. e all want to help support the planet, but as more and more brands begin to shout about their ethical principles, shopping more consciously might initially seem overwhelming. London’s department stores, which offer multiple brands under one roof, are a great place to start. Sustainability is high on Selfridges’ agenda, and the renowned store is aiming to reduce waste by 70%, carbon emissions by 15% and water usage by 12% by 2020. This ethos is also reflected in its choice of brands, which includes independent British labels that focus on key ethical issues. ELV Denim and Christopher Raeburn are among the exciting names that should be on your radar. whose eponymous founder has long been at the forefront of sustainable fashion, was an early champion of vegan ‘leather’ and has always avoided fur and feathers. Scottish knitwear brand Johnstons of Elgin, another Mayfair favourite and a member of the Sustainable Fibre Alliance, not only works closely with herders but also supports local communities in Elgin and Hawick, while seeking to improve its own environmental footprint. The jewellery industry has faced many challenges when it comes to responsible practices, but some London labels are proving that jewellery production can be sustainable. recommended. The designer’s colourful and vibrant jewellery is ethically made, and is created through different humanist projects around the world. Small started her brand at a time when issues around sustainability were less visible, and is encouraged by the attitude of today’s consumers. ‘The fact that many people are now more interested in the provenance of a gem, who made a piece and why, is wonderful, and is a great opportunity to open conversations about what we invest in and why,’ she says. Visiting the store is the perfect opportunity to discover the stories behind the pieces. Small says: ‘We love people visiting our shop to see what we make and hear the stories about where we work and why, from certified Above: Lark & Berry rings

fair-mined gold from Bolivia on necklaces to Afghan rings and bracelets made in a refugee project with the Turquoise Mountain charity in Jordan.’ The Stephen Webster boutique on Mount Street is a must-visit for responsibly sourced jewellery, as the British designer only uses conflict-free diamonds and gemstones. Alternatively, for something a little different, why not head to the Lark & Berry store in Marylebone? Founded in 2017, the young brand specialises in cultured lab-grown diamonds, which are not only traceable, but also conflict-free and environmentally kind. ‘I very much think cultured diamonds are not only the way forward, they’re actually quite necessary,’ says Laura Chavez, Lark & Berry’s founder. ‘If we have a way now to make the most luxurious diamonds on the market in labs ourselves, totally eliminating the need for mining – digging more holes, polluting ground water, bad human-rights practices – then why wouldn’t we make that switch? There are so many benefits.’ There are also a host of brands with sustainable values to discover in the world of beauty. Head to Liberty for a selection of names that are looking to make a difference, from Aveda to Davines and Ren. In Marylebone, independent beauty store Content has been highlighting natural and organic skincare, as well as complementary therapies, for over 10 years. Besides offering various beauty treatments, the boutique has a well-rounded edit of products that spans make-up from Scandi brands such as Manasi 7 and Kjaer Weis, fragrances by Strange Invisible Perfumes, created using certified organic, wildcrafted and biodynamic ingredients, and organic skincare from New Zealand-based Antipodes. Above (from top): Lark & Berry cultured diamond jewellery; one of the beautiful fragrances from Strange Invisible Perfumes

From west to east, north to south, London offers a wealth of options for those looking for ethically and sustainably made fashion, accessories and more. Since no two brands have the same approach when it comes to traceability, sourcing and production methods, curating a conscious wardrobe becomes an enthralling personal experience

WHERE TO EAT IN: MAYFAIR Mayfair has come to the fore as a top destination for gourmets, and for good reason. Sally McIlhone discovers the vibrant culinary scene in the city’s exclusive neighbourhood

INDIAN ACCENT

With its multi-million pound Georgian townhouses, five-star hotels and a reputation as one of the most expensive districts in the world, it stands to reason that Mayfair would also boast some of the best restaurants to see and be seen in. Instagram-worthy backdrops are a perfect complement to some of the most captivating dishes the UK capital has to offer. From Nobu’s famous black cod to Gridiron’s grilled meats and Indian Accent’s delectable curries, you are sure to be impressed by the flavours and produce on offer. Service at these eateries is impeccable, décor is refined and booking ahead is essential. For a refined dining experience, whether it’s lunch, dinner or a full tasting menu with matching wines, Mayfair is the connoisseur’s choice. globalblue.com

With branches in New York and New Delhi, Indian Accent aims to push inventive Indian cuisine. Chef Manish Mehrotra’s stunning menu showcases his 18 years of technical skill, passion for exceptional flavour combinations and love of ingredients. The tasting menu is an obvious choice here, as it offers the chef’s interpretations of traditional classics, and includes vegan and gluten-free options to ensure all tastes and requirements are catered for. If you opt for a la carte, first-course options such as the soy keema and smoked eggplant bharta cornet with feta herb will whet your appetite. Tandoori Scottish salmon and metha achaar pork ribs are great choices for your second course. Save room for the ghee roast lamb with roomali roti pancakes and a selection of chutneys, and be sure to order a black dairy dahl and saag paneer kulcha bread. From first to last course – where we recommend the makhan malai as a light dessert – everything is impeccably presented and will make your taste buds sing. GRIDIRON If you want to open a restaurant that specialises in flame-grilled dishes, in an area frequented by the most discerning diners, you need a chef with a world-class reputation. With Gridiron, Richard H Turner, of Hawksmoor and Pitt Cue fame, brings his flair for grilling to London’s most upmarket district. Featuring an exposed grill, bar and banquette seating, and a pared-back interior, the restaurant lets the dishes speak for themselves. Nibble on snacks such as crispy scampi with jalapeño tartare or buttermilk chicken, before enjoying starters including tender Herdwick lamb chops with smoked aubergine or Cornish lobster with angel-hair pasta and shellfish butter sauce. Mains are understandably focused on meat and seafood, with the Hereford rib-eye a favourite of ours, while chicken, pork chops and the Gridiron burger also make for delectable choices. Round off your meal with the mille-feuille or white chocolate tart, which packs a delicious punch – especially when paired with an espresso martini. Gridiron, 19 Old Park Lane, London W1K 1LB, +44 (0)20 7447 1080, gridironlondon.com

NOBU Thanks to its stellar Japanese cuisine, Nobu has become the classic Mayfair eatery with a celebrity following. Its famous dishes ensure those in the know return here frequently to satisfy their cravings. The miso black cod springs instantly to mind – a dish that diners know and love – and the restaurant offers a vast menu of delicious options, such as sushi, sashimi and tempura dishes, and much, much more. Ask the accomplished wait staff to guide you to some of the undiscovered gems on the menu. For example, the baby spinach salad with dry miso sounds simple but it’s a delectable choice that your whole table will love. Nobu London recently launched its Erabu lunch menu, which offers four courses for an incredibly affordable £36. Sample Nobu favourites such as tuna tataki with tosazu, seafood ceviche and grilled poussin with teriyaki sauce, followed by the perfectly balanced white chocolate and passion fruit Temoe dessert. Nobu London Old Park Lane, Metropolitan by COMO, 19 Old Park Lane, London W1K 1LB, +44 (0)20 7290 9222, noburestaurants.com

The latest launch from British heritage perfumer Floris reboots the Fougère fragrance family. Fougère – meaning fern – is often associated with men’s fragrance, and traditionally contains citrus top notes combined with a woody base. With its Vert Fougère eau de parfum, Floris taps into the roots of the traditional scent by utilising galbanum for a hit of greenery, and also offers ginger, lavender and grapefruit for a burst of freshness. Perfumery director Edward Bodenham worked with expert perfumer Nicola Pozzani to develop the scent, taking two years to perfect the final blend. sm Floris, 89 Jermyn Street, London SW1Y 6JH, +44 (0)20 7930 2885, florislondon.com

DARBY'S Combining Irish and American influences, Darby’s is a suave new Nine Elms eatery. The brainchild of husband and wife Robin and Sarah Gill, who have three restaurants to their name, Darby’s is inspired by Robin’s father, a jazz musician who toured America in the 1950s and 60s. Open all day, Darby’s offers full Irish breakfasts and salt beef and celeriac remoulade bagels for lunch, but it’s the dinner menu that captivates. Start with Dooncastle oysters, followed by perfectly cooked steak or wild turbot and the decadent croissant ice cream sandwich to finish. sm Darby’s, 3 Viaduct Gardens, London SW11 7AY, +44 (0)20 7537 3111, darbys-london.com

Though many brands purport to dress the strong, modern woman, the clothing from these designers can often prove inaccessible, uncomfortable and simply unwearable. Not so in the case of Deborah Lyons, whose pro-female label creates clothes that celebrate women. The autumn/winter 2019/20 range packs a glamourous punch, with 1980s influences interpreted in a chic and exciting way. Jumpsuits in refined fabrics feature cutaway back panels, beading and chain details on shoulder straps. Structured coats come in red wool or wet-look black puffer-styles with bronze metallic panels, and there are a host of eveningwear options, whether you prefer a daring minidress or a statement shirt and trousers. sm Harrods, 87-135 Brompton Road, London SW1X 7XL, +44 (0)20 7730 1234, harrods.com

SHOP HIGHLIGHT* SAINT LAURENT

For autumn/winter 2019/20 Saint Laurent’s creative director Anthony Vaccarello has tapped into the brand’s French DNA. Tailoring is an important focus of the collection, emerging in tuxedo jackets and tapered trousers, as well as in designs based on powerful cuts, such as overcoats with strong shoulders. The signature Saint Laurent glamour is very much in evidence in the 1980s-inspired minidresses, sheer blouses and feathered detailing. The elegant nature of the collection is further underlined by sequins and sparkling fabrics, as well as animal prints, which pepper an otherwise sober colour scheme. With this collection, which radiates elegance, power and confidence, Vaccarello triumphs in achieving the Parisian sophistication for which the fashion house has been known since it was founded in 1961.
