For several seasons, pearls have been some of the fashion industry’s most coveted elements in accessories. The baroque pearl, a beautifully misshapen, naturally grown gem, is set to take centre stage for autumn/winter 2019/20. These feature in the creations of Soru jewellery. Above and right: Russell & Bromley autumn/winter 2019/20 loafers
S H O P | 17
Russell & Bromley has been creating elegant and luxurious shoes for almost 140 years and its renowned loafers are an essential purchase when visiting London, as Lucinda Turner explains
Loafers have been a staple in the wardrobe of any well-dressed man for just under a century. Originating in London in the early 20th century as casual shoes for King George VI, the loafer soared in popularity in the 1950s, with Russell & Bromley undoubtedly creating some of the most renowned in Britain. Over the ensuing decades, the loafer has become one of the most enduring and also universal shoe styles across the globe. Long gone are the days of loafers being associated with stylish gentlemen alone. Indeed, a recent resurgence across the catwalks of Paris and Milan has put women’s loafers firmly back on the fashion radar. Whether worn with smart tailoring or to give a masculine edge to a feminine floral dress, loafers offer an easy way to add enduring style to a women’s ensemble. Russell & Bromley’s range of loafer styles is second to none; from tasselled to backless, patent leather to soft suede and globalblue.com
classic black to vibrant red, there’s an outstanding choice available. For autumn/winter 2019/20 the heritage British footwear brand has taken its essential loafer style, complete with elegant gold horse bit detailing, and reimagined it in a shade of shocking fuchsia. Perfectly on-trend for the season ahead, the shoes can be worn as pictured (left) or with the back folded down for a mule effect (above). Thanks to a clever panel of ultra-soft moveable leather at the heel, this classic loafer style gains a completely modern twist. Quintessentially British and eternally chic, Russell & Bromley loafers are certainly worth making room for in any stylish suitcase. ondon, known as the rebellious, rule-breaking fashion capital, is never short of an up-and-coming brand ready to disrupt the status quo. In recent years the handbag market has increasingly become the area in which global luxury brands make their biggest sales, and London’s young labels are also entering the fray in their own unique manner. While prices for a small cross-body handbag from some of Britain’s heritage designer labels continue to creep into four figures, the newest labels to grace London’s fashion scene are far more accessible. ‘Aiming for an affordable price point is very important for us,’ says Youngwon Kim, designer and founder of London-based label Danse Lente. ‘We strive to have the right balance of design, quality and price to give true value to the brand.’ Drawing on influences from architecture and sculpture, Danse Lente’s colourful creations leapt onto the scene in 2015 and by early 2017 were the only bags to be seen with during London Fashion Week. ‘Three-dimensional art pieces caught my attention in the early days and built my taste; that paved the way for me to play with prototypical shapes and lines and give them a twist,’ says Kim. ‘I find that process fascinating and that’s probably why many people say our bags are different.’ Striking and beautiful, Danse Lente’s designs captured the attention of the fashion industry not only for their intriguing aesthetics 45
49
but also for their price point. Starting at around £325, with no piece selling for more than £500, the brand fills a huge gap in the luxury market. This price point allows younger, millennial customers to not only purchase the bags but also to carry them without hesitation and with a sense of fun, resulting in a huge online following and ever-growing sales. During the brand’s first day on US retailer Moda Operandi, Danse Lente sold more units than any other accessories brand on their initial day on the platform, and in 2018 searches for its renowned Phoebe bag soared by 61% on Lyst. Although the brand has
S H O P | 27
international acclaim, it is in London that Korean-born founder Kim continues to live and work. ‘I went to design school in London, meaning that for me it feels like I was raised here as a designer,’ she remarks. ‘It’s such a multicultural place. Everyone has a different background in this city, which inspires a lot of creativity.’ Spanish-born Mireia Llusia-Lindh is similarly stimulated by London, where she has lived for more than 20 years and where she launched her accessories label DeMellier. ‘London inspired me to create DeMellier and is reflected very much in the cosmopolitanism of the brand,’ says Llusia-Lindh. Above (all): Danse Lente autumn/winter 2019/20
The melting pot of cultures as well as the fusion of old and new architecture was the starting point for the brand’s classic yet contemporary styles. With prices sitting around £300, DeMellier offers attainable luxury. But in contrast to Danse Lente’s millennial-friendly collections with their eye-popping colours, DeMellier seeks a different audience. Llusia-Lindh describes her ideal customers as ‘women who shine without trying too hard’. The muted palette and elegant shapes of the autumn/winter 2019/20 collection are a testament to that notion. Bordering on Scandinavian minimalism with their clean lines
28 | F E AT U R E
and sleek shapes, these are bags for every day, to be dressed up or down and taken from the boardroom to a stylish restaurant. ‘I often start designing a new collection from a specific shape I have in mind or a beautiful piece of hardware that inspires me,’ says Llusia-Lindh. ‘I know these will anchor the whole design of the bag.’ Each piece is handmade in Spain and DeMellier’s supply chain is exemplary; any leftover materials are donated to local training centres that nurture the next generation of craftsmen. The brand is attempting to subvert the worldwide dependency on fast fashion by championing fair pricing. ‘In a world where fast fashion and cheap production are the norm, we want to treasure and support the artisanal
processes that we believe attainable luxury should stand for,’ explains Llusia-Lindh. Responsible supply chains with fair pricing are often key when it comes to these accessible luxury lines. London-based handbag brand Yuzefi uses only responsibly sourced luxury Italian leather and handcrafts each bag in Spain. Those working for the label have a passionately held belief that contemporary price points do not have to mean a compromise on design or quality. Ensuring each bag is not only of the highest quality but is also made with high ethical standards is increasingly relevant to today’s consumer. Since launching in 2016, Yuzefi has been one step ahead of what today’s customers need. Founder

Naza Yousefi pre-empted the market shift from loyalty to one brand towards more productfocused purchases, responding by creating statement pieces that stand out for their unique and clever designs. Inspired by techniques used for making furniture, Yuzefi’s structural bag designs are instantly recognisable to the brand’s many loyal fans. As the fashion industry veers away from seasonal trends and puts Above: Yuzefi autumn/winter 2019/20
the focus back on beautiful pieces that will stand the test of time, London’s young, accessibly priced handbag brands are truly beginning to shape the market. Long gone are the days when Britain’s biggest labels were the only game in town. Attainable prices, striking sculptural designs and addressing the needs of the modern consumer are putting these labels at the top of everyone’s shopping list, with sell-out pieces to prove it

TAPPIT HEN Family-owned wine merchant Davy’s recently opened the Tappit Hen in the City of London. The wine bar and restaurant is impeccably laid out over two floors and combines modern and heritage design elements. Guests can enjoy a tipple at the bar or dine on seasonal British cuisine in the cellar eatery where options might include roast Rye Bay cod loin with caper and parsley mash, and homemade burgers. There’s a wide selection of drinks, including wines exclusive to Davy’s and the largest selection of fortified wine and port in the City. Named after a traditional port bottle, the Tappit Hen was previously home to the Sandeman port company. as The Tappit Hen, 21-23 St Swithins Lane, London EC4N 8AD, +44 (0)20 7621 1148, davy.co.uk
