FUTURE PERFECT For autumn/winter 2015/16, Madrid-based fashion house Loewe delivered yet another trendsetting collection. Oversized leather jackets, billowing trousers and geometric patterns were the order of the day. BEAR NECESSITIES These quirky drop earrings, which feature Tous’s trademark teddy bear motif, will make a cheerful addition to any jewellery collection. First conceived by Rosa Oriol, a member of the Tous family, the teddy has been a recurring motif across Tous’s jewellery since 1985, and with each new collection the bear appears in new ways and places. Here the cuteness of the bear adds a playful element to an earring style often reserved for evening, while the golden vermeil keeps them looking luxurious. hl Tous, Calle de Serrano 50, 28001 Madrid, +34 91 431 9242, tous.com * for map go to page 64

he chic modern interior of menswear concept store Yusty belies the fact that the company celebrated its centenary last year. Three generations of the same family have cultivated a spirit of elegance and exclusivity in the store, which is dedicated to men’s fashion in all its forms. The frst Yusty store was inspired by London’s Savile Row and sought to refect the gentlemanly air of the street’s distinguished tailors. This spirit of tradition remains at the heart of the store, although the collection it ofers today evolves to meet the needs of the modern gentleman. a family business very seriously. ‘We know it’s not just a business, it’s our family’s history and we have to take care of it so we can pass it on to our children, the way our parents did with us,’ explains the store’s current co-owner Daniel Yusty. ‘Our customers have grown with us and that’s the beauty of our business.’ Growth has also meant change and Yusty works hard to maintain a careful balance between honouring its historic tailoring traditions while modernising and

introducing more avant-garde brands such as Comme des Garçons, Acne and Proenza Schouler. This evolving product range is refected in the store’s interior, which was completely refurbished in 2014 and now provides a host of contemporary comforts. However, one thing has remained constant throughout the past century – a focus on the customer experience. ‘Most suits are tailor made for the customer,’ says Daniel Yusty. ‘The customer decides everything from the fabrics to the colours, buttons or embroidery. We’re inspired by our customers.’ With its rich heritage and decades of experience, Yusty understands what it takes to create the perfect wardrobe for the modern man. ‘It’s essential to have some good quality basics: a good pair of shoes, shirts, a nice coat and a good suit for special occasions,’ notes Daniel Yusty. ‘Technological gadgets are also an essential part of our wardrobe today.’
In contrast, the traditional ceramics on ofer at Antigua Casa Talavera have remained virtually unchanged since the store opened over 110 years ago. Now owned by the fourth generation of the founding family, Antigua Casa Talavera also supports other artisans, only sourcing its ceramics from family-owned workshops that produce pieces as they did centuries ago, using wheels, wood stoves and their own special techniques. It now has a network of suppliers throughout Spain, in Toledo, Seville, Onda

and Granada. ‘The fact that this shop has been a family business has helped us to maintain tradition since 1904. The love for our work and our feelings for the store have also been transmitted from generation to generation,’ says the store’s owner José Senespleda Jaramillo. ‘We think this is something that our customers perceive and appreciate. Some people come in as customers and leave as friends.’ All Antigua Casa Talavera’s high-quality products refect the shapes, designs and colours of classical Spanish pottery. The store’s interior is similarly traditional, with a look and feel that has remained unchanged over the years. ‘There’s a lot of history here,’ says Senespleda Jaramillo. ‘We’re glad to explain and transmit it to customers. I guess this is what has won our customers’ interest and that’s why they recommend us to family and friends.’

TO MARKET, TO MARKET Madrid’s best food markets are gourmet venues that ofer far more than just fruit and vegetables. Isabella Redmond Styles picks a selection of the best
Madrid has a long history of excellent food markets and street stalls. The produce on ofer at the city’s best markets, from the freshest fruit, vegetables and seafood to artisanal products, is always authentic and delicious. The city cherishes its markets, as shown by its rescue of the previously dilapidated Mercado de San Antón, which has been extensively renovated; the city contributed 30% of the total €15m cost, and the new globalblue.com
structure now attracts visitors from all over the world. Other Madrid markets have also found innovative and clever ways of keeping up with the demands of the modern gourmet. While preserving culinary traditions, the city’s best markets now boast striking, contemporary designs. They are places to not only discover authentic Spanish food and drink, but also enjoy a wide range of international delicacies, and are as popular with locals as with visitors.

M ERCA DO DE SAN MIGUEL Mercado de San Miguel is one of the Spanish capital’s oldest and most picturesque markets. After extensive renovations, it reopened in 2009 with the aim of becoming a centre for culinary culture and also of celebrating local and seasonal produce. Inside the iron market hall’s charming façade, there’s a host of gourmet food and drink stalls, offering
everything from authentic paella to handmade sushi, and even a whole cart dedicated to delicious deep-fried croquetas. If you’re seeking something to sip, try the well-stocked Pinkleton & Wine bar or the vermouth stall – and if you’re keen to keep your liquid refreshment local, the Sherry Corner offers guided tastings of some of the country’s best. gourmet destinations. The market is inspired by both tradition and modernity; there was a 19thcentury market of the same name and San Ildefonso also draws on the success of street food in cities such as London and New York. The food here is authentic and exciting; 19 food stalls profer everything from Spanish specialities such as Iberian ham, cheese, seafood and croquetas to international bites that include tacos and burgers. The space includes bars and two indoor terraces where visitors can sit down and tuck into delicious morsels from the market vendors. On the frst foor, food lovers can pick up the best fresh, artisanal produce from the fnest local producers. Tapas is the theme of the second foor, which ofers culinarily diverse stands. Hungry visitors can choose between Italian, Japanese and Greek bites in addition to smokehouse, rotisserie and seafood stands. The Espacio Trapezio serves as an art gallery and theatre, while on the top foor there is a restaurant which uses market produce and ofers a lively outdoor terrace.

globalblue.com
