IN STORE: EL GANSO El Ganso specialises in classic yet contemporary menswear, including suits, casualwear and accessories, and also offers womenswear and childrenswear. The first El Ganso store opened in 2006 and the brand has expanded internationally across Europe and America. Ximena Daneri talks to cofounder Álvaro Cebrián about his approach to fashion
‘For El Ganso we try to create a brand, a concept, where everything is coherent, from the products through to the décor. As for product inspiration, essentially what we make is cosmopolitan clothing in Mediterranean colours, while paying particular attention to the details. ‘We range from preppy, American style to a slightly more alternative style from places like Berlin, touching on a sense of British elegance and so on, all at afordable prices. Save up to 15.7% by shopping tax free, see page 73
‘Our philosophy is that El Ganso is a cosmopolitan brand, elegant but informal, that knows how to adapt to the times we live in through colour, quality and optimism. ‘Internationally, by the end of 2015 we had over 120 standalone stores and a workforce comprising over 600 employees worldwide. For the design and set-up of each store we do everything internally. We have a team that prepares each detail with care, and a workshop that gives shape to each element.
S H O P | 39
I like to be very involved in the process; it is extremely gratifying to watch as a store takes shape and comes to life. All of our stores follow the same blueprint, but we always have at least one element that is original to each. We like to highlight and make use of structural elements that could give character to a store, such as antique façades, columns or walls with unusual fnishes, exposed bricks, etcetera. ‘As a general rule, I think that as a brand we have managed
to encapsulate a fun, elegant style, which is what defnes us. My favourite shopping district in Madrid is Calle Fuencarral, where we opened our frst standalone store. It has become one of the city’s prime shopping locations; plus the fact that it has a pedestrianised zone makes the shopping process a more comfortable, relaxed experience.’ El Ganso, Calle de Fuencarral 2, 28004 Madrid, +34 91 523 5437, elganso.com * for map go to page 69

Home-grown talent was at the heart of Fashion Week Madrid, highlighting Spain’s creative spirit; the majority of the participating designers were of Spanish heritage. Amaya Arzuaga, a Spanish womenswear producer with over 200 stores across the country, sent clean lines, playful structures and oversized ruff collars down the runway for her spring/summer collection. Leather capes and neutral palettes based around black, beige and crisp white were embraced beautifully by the respected designer. ercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid’s spring/ summer 2016 showcase was a stylish mix of established Spanish brands and exciting newcomers. The event, which celebrated its 30th anniversary this season, is growing in popularity, and this year attracted over 50,000 visitors to the Spanish capital, all hoping for a first glimpse of the key trends for spring/summer. Forty-two designers and brands took part; women’s and men’s ready-to-wear ranges, as well as bespoke collections, made their debuts in the Feria de Madrid congress centre, where highlights included bold, cartoon-like prints, playful textures, one-piece dressing and pastel hues.

He used seersucker cotton throughout his collection for its breathability, texture and coolness; a unique approach executed with precision as Etxeberría presented flowing duster jackets, shift dresses and lightweight culottes, firmly cementing his place as a name to watch. For the third consecutive season, Madrid-based label Alvarno took the L’Oréal award for the week’s best collection. Founded in 2009 by creative duo Arnaud Maillard and Alvaro Castejón, Alvarno opened its first store last spring on Madrid’s prestigious Calle Hermosilla. Maillard and Castejón themed their current collection around past, present and future, using stripes and multicoloured pleating on flowing summer dresses and skirts. Luxurious jewels and embellishments adorned razorsharp cuts. Motifs from popular culture, such as the mask of Star Wars villain Darth Vader, were given a metallic makeover and featured on lightweight wool sweaters. Soft animal print in a monochromatic palette featured on flowing fabrics to add to the brand’s playful yet luxurious aesthetic. Inspirations came from eclectic places this season. Twin brothers Aitor and Iñaki Muñoz, cofounders of Catalan womenswear label Ailanto, were influenced by A Bigger Splash, the iconic pop art painting by British artist David Hockney. A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME – WITH RIMOWA
The 1920s marked the beginning of modern air travel and the golden age of Hollywood. In 1919, Hugo Junkers presented the world’s first all-metal commercial aircraft. It was made using the aircraft aluminum alloy discovered by Alfred Wilm in 1906. In 1950, RIMOWA presented its suitcase with the unmistakable grooved design made of the same material – at the time, it was the lightest suitcase in the world. RIMOWA was a real pioneer in the sector, starting the trend for lightweight luggage back then. RIMOWA STORE MADRID: CALLE SERRANO, 78 www.rimowa.com

RAISING THE BAR There’s much more to Madrid’s nightlife than tapas bars and sangria, as Theresa Harold discovers
Madrid is understandably proud of its nightlife – it’s said that the city has one of the highest numbers of bars per capita in Europe. A typical night out tends to start late, at perhaps 10pm or 11pm, and revellers often party until the early hours of the following morning. The Spanish capital is brimming with diverse venues and one of the best things about Madrid’s bar scene is that quantity does not compromise quality. globalblue.com
The city ofers a host of authentic and interesting places that are frequented by locals and visitors alike. Often described as a melting pot for all of Spain’s regional cultures, Madrid’s rich heritage can be seen in the variety of food and drink ofered at its many restaurants and bars. BRISTOL BAR Named after the English city, Bristol Bar is the perfect place to indulge in an educational gintasting experience. The bar has one of the largest ranges of gins in Madrid and visitors should try out a few unusual gin and tonic variations, or sample a gin-based cocktail from the menu. The décor is an atmospheric mix of dark wood and red furniture,
with chandeliers, chesterfeld sofas and portraits of British historical fgures. The atmosphere is convivial and the food is hearty without ever being stodgy. Best of all, if you’ve overindulged the night before, Bristol Bar’s excellent brunch is guaranteed to restore your spirits. BEKER 6
PHOTO: © ALINA BANTA
Located in Barrio de Salamanca, one of Madrid’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, Beker 6 is a stylish Armenian-inspired restaurant featuring an intimate bar and terrace. Every season, head chef Álvaro Rodriguez-Cano creates a new menu of beautifully presented food to accompany the list of show-stopping wines.
Customers can choose to eat either in the 40-seater dining room or on the stunning roof terrace. Our top tip is to arrive early and settle into a comfortable spot at the bar, then order little plates of food as you sip extraordinary wines and watch dusk descend over the city. Beker 6, Calle Hermanos Bécquer 6, 28006 Madrid, +34 91 173 4397, beker6.com
A hotspot for the city’s creatives, El Figurante is a popular bar with a distinctly cinematic infuence. Every cocktail on the menu conjures up memories of a famous flm; try the strawberry daiquiri from The Godfather or the white Russian from The Big Lebowski. The venue also hosts regular flm screenings of both indie and cult classic flms on Tuesday nights. Owner Rodrigo Javier Demirjian brings his Argentine heritage to globalblue.com
the bar, serving Fernet herbal liqueur with cola and Argentinestyle beef empanadas. El Figurante, Calle del Olmo 12, 28012 Madrid, +34 66 608 9013, facebook.com/elfgurante

HOTEL AM STEINPLATZ Few hotels match the beauty of Hotel Am Steinplatz. The art nouveau structure, designed by German architect August Endell, is breath-taking from the outside and is matched by a stunning interior. Bedrooms are furnished in an art nouveau style, with 1920s black and white photographs adorning the walls of the restaurant and public areas. globalblue.com

HÔTEL LE MONTANA Le Montana, the famous Parisian nightclub which has played host to countless celebrities, artists and socialites, is once again opening its upper-foor hotel. Основу Мадридской globalblue.com

Ailanto.

73: When You Shop The World, Shop Tax Free
