NEW CLASSICS Spanish fashion retailer Mango is well-known for its flattering styles and fabrics. This season, the brand presents us with a selection of visually strong pieces based on reinvented classics: fitted dresses with silver hoops, Victorian bellsleeved shirts and high-waisted tapered trousers stand out as key pieces in this collection with a conceptual edge. These bold silhouettes with plenty of volume are paired with a vibrant colour scheme peppered with metallics. The juxtaposition of the covetable earthy colour palette and acid brights adds a powerful finishing touch to the trend-led spring/ summer line. akl Mango, Calle Gran VĂa 32, 28013 Madrid, +34 91 521 0879, mango.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 69

Chus Burés is famed for his striking collections, such as Buttons from 2000 and his 1985 Madrid range in silver, which featured the Matador hairpin, designed for the Pedro Almodóvar film of the same name. The groundbreaking jeweller has recently released a new book of his work, Chus Burés: Portraits & Jewellery, so there has never been a better time to visit his store. ‘The book is an homage to my collectors, my clients, my friends. The idea is to portray people and the way they wear my jewellery in a real situation, the way they are,’ he explains. Featuring photographs of key names in the art scene, the stunning book is further testimony to the

jeweller’s accomplishments and reputation. Portraits include Miguel Zugaza, who leaves his directorship of the Museo del Prado national art museum this year to return to his former position at the helm of Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao fine arts museum. Burés decided to open his store in Salamanca because of its central location and proximity to great cultural locations. ‘We have the Retiro park nearby and access to major museums. To be in central Madrid is crucial for work meetings and having major brands and great hotels nearby makes it easier for my clients and collectors,’ he says. When it comes to other must-visit spots, Burés has a host of favourites: ‘Yusty for men, Casaflorida for

Look out for the designer’s three new collections, Dans L’Univers, Past/Future and Subverted Jewellery, at his charming boutique. There are plenty of cultural discoveries to be made in the Salamanca area, from the Puerta de Alcalá monument and the Museo Arqueológico Nacional in the south of the district to the Museo Lázaro Galdiano in the north. When it comes to culinary delights, the Mercado de La Paz market, as mentioned by Chus Burés, is a local institution and the perfect place to

pick up ingredients for a picnic in nearby Parque del Buen Retiro. For dessert, choose from a delicious range of pastries at Mallorca, a chain with several branches in the city. If you’re looking for an upmarket dining experience, visit Platea – a foodie haven which comprises gourmet food stores, bars and no fewer than 12 restaurants. We recommend Restaurante Arriba for a truly memorable meal. Whether you prefer to discover top designers, marvel at archaeological finds, take in artwork by Goya and Bosch, simply enjoy the delicious food on offer, or combine all of these, the Salamanca district has something for everyone

RAISING THE BAR There’s no better way to enjoy the beauty and vibrancy of Madrid than from the rooftops. Emma Johnson shares her pick of the best views of the city

Offering endless balmy evenings, late night tapas and a laid-back vibe, Madrid is the perfect city in which to while away an evening watching the sunset and soaking up the atmosphere. Long, straight boulevards, flanked by palatial historical buildings, lead to beautiful cobbled squares on which both day and nightlife is played out under the shade of the trees. Madrid has a reputation as both a party capital and a cultural hub, and deserves both. A beautiful city at street level, the stunning metropolis is revealed anew when viewed from on high. globalblue.com

T H E R O O F AT M E MADRID ME Madrid Reina Victoria, one of the best-known hotels in Madrid, is located on one of the city’s most beautiful squares and also offers one of the best views, across to the Teatro Real opera house. The Roof, its rooftop bar, is one of the most exclusive and luxurious places to soak up the sights of the city as the sun sets. High glamour and panoramic views are the order of the day here. Grab one of the vast sofa booths, open to the stars, order one of the signature mojitos, and settle in for the evening, enjoying the sounds of the city coming to life from the streets below. HOTEL ÓSCAR Hotel Óscar’s rooftop is fast becoming one of the most popular hangouts in the city. Its gorgeous rooftop swimming pool is a magnet for those in the know, who come here to relax and soak up the rays away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Designed by well-known Spanish interior designer Tomás Alía, the rooftop has a lounge, Balinese

beds, chaises longues and an extensive bar. Clever sunroofs and panels make this an all-weather destination, while the cocktail menu has over 30 offerings. Sights to look out for from this rooftop include the bustling Gran Vía and the iconic Telefónica building; built in 1929, it was one of Europe’s first skyscrapers. La Terraza del Urban, atop Hotel Urban, is a nightspot with a chic, cosmopolitan vibe. Boasting a unique view of Madrid’s skyline, including the Spanish parliament and the famous Puerta de Sol square, this is one of the best places in the city to enjoy an evening outdoors. An impressive oyster and caviar menu, excellent sushi and sashimi, plus a comprehensive tapas selection, make dining here a pleasure. Arrive in time for sunset and soak up the stunning views. globalblue.com

AZOTEA DEL CÍRCULO Azotea del Círculo covers the entire rooftop of the Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid, one of the most important cultural centres in Europe. This unique gastrocultural project is known for one of the best 360-degree views of Madrid, taking in Calle Gran Vía, the famous Edificio Métropolis building and beautiful beaux-arts and art-deco architecture. LES BAINS Les Bains in the Marais district of Paris opened in 1885 as a bathhouse, with notable figures such as Marcel Proust among its visitors. It was reincarnated in 1978 as a glitzy nightclub that played host to 20th-century icons including Warhol, Basquiat, Yves Saint Laurent, Mick Jagger and David Bowie. Now a hotel, its current design, masterminded by architect Vincent Bastie and designers Tristan Auer and Denis Montel, is nothing short of spectacular, incorporating the globalblue.com

building’s heritage into a space that is forward-looking and innovative. Les Bains is a members’ lounge, restaurant, bar, club and concert venue as well as a hotel. The 39 guest rooms and suites make use of materials in keeping with Les Bains’ bathhouse history, including white marble and precious woods, and also reference the venue’s former guests with furniture such as a Warhol-esque sofa. 40: Pride Of Place

– Dans L’Univers, Past/Future и Subverted Jewellery.
