Queen Letizia of Spain’s elegant, fashion-forward style choices are flying the flag for Spanish labels. Hannah Lewis discovers the brands that have received the royal seal of approval

42 | F E AT U R E

M

uch as the Duchess of Cambridge is recognised for her championing of British labels, and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark is known for showcasing great Danish design, Queen Letizia of Spain is a noted aficionado of excellent Spanish brands. A darling of the international fashion press, the former journalist has been widely applauded for her fashion-forward take on elegant, feminine style. Mixing high-end and high-street pieces with aplomb, she has a definite penchant for classics by the likes of Hugo Boss and Carolina Herrera, but the majority of her public wardrobe is comprised of excellent home-grown brands. Take a leaf from her book this season and discover Spain’s most covetable local labels.

Queen Letizia is known for championing Spanish labels It’s impossible to speak of standout Spanish brands without at least a nod to Zara, the high street phenomenon that offers highfashion aesthetics at fast-fashion prices. Unsurprisingly, Queen Letizia is a fan, and Zara has become her go-to label for striking pieces that add an edge to her formal attire – statement jackets and bold earrings in particular. Floral dresses are another favourite, and Zara is unrivalled on the high street in this department, carefully balancing bold prints with simple, elegant silhouettes. Uterqüe, one of the most recent launches from Zara’s parent company Inditex, is another brand

Queen Letizia owns an enviable collection of Adolfo Domínguez clutches and cross-body bags in everything from snakeskin to fuchsia

favoured by Queen Letizia. The label originally offered accessories only, but has since added a select line of ready to wear that builds on its philosophy of excellent pieces, beautifully made to stand the test of time. Head to Uterqüe for unique yet understated pieces that you’ll wear time and again. This season offers some particularly excellent leather pieces – from a range of biker jackets in everything from classic black to teal suede, to a one-shouldered ruffled top in supple black leather that looks as though it’s straight off the catwalk. When it comes to shoes, there are two brands that Queen Letizia returns to time and again: Magrit Above: Adolfo Domínguez spring/summer 2018

and Adolfo Domínguez. Founded in 1929, heritage brand Magrit fuses the tradition and craftsmanship that can only come from decades of experience with a truly modern approach to design. Its shoes feature classic shapes that are both beautiful and comfortable, while bold colours and textures, or unusual materials, make the styles stand out from the crowd. This season, look out for Magrit’s range of modernist stilettos featuring clear vinyl panels, and the Exotic collection, which updates the classic snakeskin motif with paintbox brights. The brand also excels when it comes to wardrobe staples: you’ll be sure to find the

perfect neutral pumps or raffia wedges here. For something really special, make the most of the exclusive customisation service at the store on Calle de José Ortega y Gasset – because bespoke shoes are truly fit for a queen. Adolfo Domínguez came to fame in the 1970s and has continued to win loyal fans with his timeless, unfussy aesthetic. Queen Letizia is often spotted in the designer’s luxurious, perfectly cut wardrobe staples – classic t-shirts in soft white silk, or minimal shift dresses that radiate laid-back summer style. But it is the brand’s shoes that she is devoted to. The label favours classic styles and a neutral palette, which work perfectly for Letizia, who embraces bold colours and prints in her apparel and tends to opt for a simpler – yet no less beautiful – shoe. Don’t overlook the brand’s handbags, either. Queen Letizia has an enviable collection of its clutches and cross-body bags in everything from elegant snakeskin to bold fuchsia. Celebrated designer Roberto Verino is another royal favourite. Collections offer an edgy take on elegant femininity, and each piece is expertly crafted from only the most excellent fabrics, with the brand proudly flying the flag for the Made in Spain label. The Queen has been spotted in a Roberto Verino monochrome check pussy-bow blouse: evidence of the brand’s talent for welltailored pieces that are classic yet Above (both): Adolfo Domínguez spring/summer 2018

still feel fresh. The Verino silhouette is timeless, with a fashion-forward edge injected by mixed prints, colours and luxe materials. Finally, when it comes to occasion dressing, there is one designer Queen Letizia calls on time and again: Felipe Varela. The royal is often spotted in pieces from his ready-to-wear collections –

think form-fitting dresses for formal events – but it is his custom creations that really make a statement. Book an appointment at the Ortega y Gasset boutique and discover the stunning hand craftsmanship of the brand’s bespoke pieces, which are beautiful enough to make anyone feel like a queen

TABLE TALK

Modern tapas consist of delicious small dishes with typically Mediterranean flavours – and Madrid doesn’t disappoint when it comes to high-end versions of this long-established Spanish dining experience. Whether you’re a traditionalist who enjoys classic patatas bravas (potato in spicy tomato sauce) with aioli (garlic mayonnaise) or you’re a more experimental diner, the city’s food scene has something to tempt you. The beauty of tapas comes from trying new combinations and sharing, so get ready to gather some friends and tuck into some of Madrid’s top menus. globalblue.com

Tapas, a classic Spanish culinary treat, are certainly not to be missed during your stay in Madrid. Lucinda Turner rounds up some of the best that the Spanish capital has to offer

LA CASA DEL ABUELO If you’re seeking an authentic Spanish tapas experience, La Casa del Abuelo is a great place to start. Founded in 1906, it was initially a spot where locals could enjoy sweet wine and donuts. By the 1930s the tapas menu was in full swing and the chefs were selling more than 1,500 snacks per day. To rejuvenate the business in the 1940s, the owners decided to focus on prawns, and the rest is history. As well as a full tapas menu, the house is particularly famous for its garlic prawns, which have been devoured by the rich and famous of Madrid for over 70 years; we’d recommend ordering two portions as they’re too good to share. ÁLBORA It’s not often that tapas comes with a side of Michelin star, but that’s the case at contemporary Madrid restaurant Álbora. Strictly speaking, the Michelin star belongs to the fine-dining restaurant upstairs; however, that’s not to say the elegant tapas bar on the ground floor hasn’t inherited a little of its shine. The tapas menu includes a plethora of forward-thinking culinary treats

PHOTO: (MIDDLE) © ESTANIS NUÑEZ

Head chef and founder David Marcano worked at the worldfamous Arzak restaurant in San Sebastián before launching his eponymous enterprise in Madrid in 2012. After enjoying rapid success, his restaurant moved to its current larger premises in 2014 and has been serving up delectable Madrid-style dishes ever since. The tempura artichokes and egg en cocotte with black truffle are not to be missed, while unconventional croquettes featuring mussels, prawns and Idiazábal cheese from the Basque region really set the tapas menu apart. David Marcano aims to bring traditional Spanish food to a point of culinary excellence – and he is certainly succeeding. such as seaweed bread with baby squid and ham mayonnaise, and poached egg, Iberian ham and potato foam. Although not traditional, the soft-shell crab brioche roll is a definitely a highlight. Mercado de la Reina on Madrid’s bustling Gran Vía aims to create the perfect balance between nightlife and gastronomy. The very reasonably priced set menu offers sharing plates as well as classic individual tapas – and a quiet word with the executive chef can result in a personalised set menu just for your group. The real secret of Mercado de la Reina lies in the Gin Club, which offers a place to retire to once the Padrón peppers and Ibérico ham croquettes are done. The low lighting and list of over 40 gin and tonic combinations contribute to a perfect setting where you can digest and discuss the grilled octopus dish you’ve just eaten – or get ready to discover more of Madrid’s lively nightlife. STORY HEADING

Alfaro opened its first store in Madrid in 1926. It has become one of the city’s most prominent multibrand boutiques, while remaining true to its roots in the creation of luxury leather items. Alongside a host of Spanish and international labels, including American outerwear brand Woolrich and Italian labels Manzoni 24 and Fabiana Filippi, the store is known for its own extremely covetable lambskin coats – an excellent investment for next season. As well as ready-to-wear pieces, the store offers collections of eye-catching accessories, including jewellery and scarves.

40: FIT FOR A QUEEN
