WOVEN TRIBUTE Woven accessories have been a huge trend since last summer and continue to be popular for the spring/summer season. This basket bag is inspired by the heritage of Loewe, which began as a cooperative of leather artisans in 1846. Thanks to its woven details, intertwining leather and wicker, it perfectly combines the past and present of the brand. Loewe’s range of rustic baskets features striking elements, from leather Save up to 15.7% by shopping tax free, see page 44
to sparkling embellishments, and the structure and weave of the bags nod to the masterworks of Irish basket maker Joe Hogan, the Loewe Craft Prize finalist whose woven pods featured in the brand’s spring/summer 2019 Paris show. The prize is an annual award that celebrates excellence in modern craftsmanship. fm Loewe bag, €1,700, Loewe, Calle de Serrano 34, 28001 Madrid, +34 91 577 6056, loewe.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 38

panish women are known worldwide for their flair and sense of style. The design team at luxury brand Delpozo observes that in Spanish fashion ‘there is a certain sensibility for comfort and joyfulness’. They add that there’s a great deal of elegance and classic chicness but ‘that said, Spanish women are not afraid of colour and print.’ Combining the Mediterranean glamour that is found in Italy with the laid-back attitude seen in Paris, Spanish women radiate confidence in their choice of clothes. They make a statement and have no fear of flamboyance. Spanish brands such as Zara, Mango, Massimo Dutti and Stradivarius have led the 48 Traducción al español 53

way on the high street, offering fashion with a focus on trends. But it’s the Spanish designers on a more luxury level that have cemented an identity for the country’s fashion. Colourful, vibrant, powerful, Spanish fashion resonates with the nation’s culture. It is inspired by the landscape, art and attitudes of the Iberian Peninsula. In their clothing as well as their accessories, brands such as Bimba y Lola, Desigual, Manolo Blahnik, Paloma Wool and Delpozo use colour, print and volume to express a great sense of strength in their identity. Spain’s Mediterranean location is very much reflected in the nation’s fashion style – the bold colours and prints are redolent of Above (both): two looks from Delpozo spring/ summer 2019

Spanish women radiate confidence in their choice of clothes and have no fear of flamboyance long, balmy summers. This contrasts with Nordic fashion, with its neutral shades and utilitarian approach to clothing due to the harsher climate. Many of Spain’s artists and designers are renowned for their use of colour. Take Gaudí with his Park Güell, Dalí with his surrealism and Miró with his fantastical vision – none of them were afraid of loud hues or bold forms. Catalan brand Desigual has become synonymous with strong shades, graffiti art and paisley prints ‒ and for injecting a sense of life into clothing. The brand celebrated Spanish art in its 2017 collaboration with artist and designer Miranda Makaroff and has continued to enjoy a mood of
ebullience across subsequent collections. Not least in its spring/ summer 2019 range, which radiates vivacity with boldly coloured shirts and cocktail dresses offering sharp and striking silhouettes. Structure is playful at couture-inspired house Delpozo. The brand is known internationally for its voluminous sleeves, ruffles and exuberant pieces that harness contemporary femininity. According to the Delpozo design team, the label’s DNA is based on ‘colour, volume and texture’. Madrid, the city where the label was founded and is still based, is a key inspiration ‒ ‘it’s the heritage of the brand,’ says the team, adding that ‘part of the identity is in using

certain colours and silhouettes without being too obvious.’ Like Delpozo, many Spanish brands offer upliftingly modern styles for women. In an era where androgyny is on trend, with an emphasis on boxy shapes, dark tones, trainers, tailored suits and trousers rather than skirts or dresses, Bimba y Lola proudly offers a contemporary take on typically feminine styles. Known for its exaggerated, logo-embossed accessories in fluorescent or metallic tones, and for its floral-print mididresses with technical elements, Bimba y Lola brings comfort to classic styles for the modern woman. Tailoring isn’t presented in the usual pinstriped Above: Bimba y Lola spring/summer 2019
navy or black, but in rusty orange corduroy and impactful checks. Unlike other Spanish brands that go big with rainbow hues and volume, Paloma Wool has pioneered a global trend for printing clothing with line drawings of the female form. The Barcelona-based brand is inspired by the works of artist Henri Matisse, and its use of slogans such as ‘getting dressed is choosing a companion for your skin’ reflects its views on the importance of style and how this is integral to Spanish women. Accessories in Spain are offered on a grand scale. Barcelona milliner Eliurpi is known for its elegant sinamay hats which, complete with wide brims and sumptuous black
S H O P | 33
ribbon ties, are reminiscent of a bygone era. A small team of two with a big vision and even bigger hats, Eliurpi makes a strong statement from simple designs. Spanish footwear is often similarly bold. Legendary designer Manolo Blahnik is inspired by the Canary Islands, where he grew up. His striking shoe designs often reflect tropical elements of Spain. Blahnik notoriously dislikes the clunkiness of platforms, and his shoes frequently have elegant stiletto heels, which he believes complement the leg more effectively. His spring/summer 2019 collection is informed by modern art, sculpture and Italian architecture. Quintessential
Manolo Blahnik features of ruffled leather, scallop edging, pointed toes and jewel embellishments all make an appearance. Across Spain there is sense of identity in dressing that is unlike fashion in other parts of the world. Without losing sight of comfort and practicality, Spanish designers reflect the liveliness of their culture through the impact of colour, volume and print. Key styles from Desigual, Bimba y Lola and Paloma Wool are ideal for everyday wear, with Delpozo and Manolo Blahnik for those extra-special occasions. Walk the streets of Madrid and you’ll notice that for women here the use of monochrome is minimal; instead, ruffles rule and print is power

globalblue.cn

TRADUCCIÓN AL ESPAÑOL 28: TO THE MAX AL MÁXIMO
