FOR ART’S SAKE For spring/summer 2020, Coach takes inspiration from both the past and the future: the brand looks back to its roots and to cultural history while also looking forward to the new decade. Key pieces of the season include leather jackets and trousers, and prints bring a dose of fun. The collection is dotted with illustrations by Richard Bernstein, an artist with ties to the pop art movement. His vibrant portraits appear on T-shirts, sweaters, tank tops and more. The collection is complemented by 78 bags, each based on a design from the brand’s 78-year archive. GRC Coach, Calle de Serrano 22, 28016 Madrid, +34 91 529 6469, coach.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 34

50 YEARS STRONG Sportmax recently turned 50 and its spring/summer 2020 collection reflects the fact that it has known how to stay relevant across five decades. This season’s designs use light fabrics and fluid shapes in hues that evoke sun-soaked landscapes, from artichoke green to dusty pink. Leather is prominent, whether in details such as cuffs or in statement coats like the pictured Acaici (€2,119). ESCAPE TO IBIZA This summer, Loewe presents its fourth Paula’s Ibiza capsule collection. Created in collaboration with the founders of the cult Ibizan boutique Paula’s, the range captures the free-spirited vibe of the Balearic island. This season it is translated into tie-dye, mermaid prints and floral motifs. In addition, denim is finished with patchworking, and fringing appears on kaftans, tops and dresses. The collection is rounded out with a wide range of accessories, from bucket hats and bum bags to phone cases and water bottles, while Loewe signatures such as the Balloon, Puzzle and Hammock bags are updated in neons or pastels. FASHION PASSION WITH

From Valentino and Kenzo to Marc Jacobs, for spring/summer 2020 many designers have looked to Spain’s flamboyant flamenco dance tradition for inspiration, as Fani Mari reports

The flamenco style of dresses and skirts is said to have originated in 19th-century Seville, when the local gypsies and peasants would add embellishments of ruffles and accessories to their everyday attire in order to dress up for cattle fairs and other special events. Over time the flamenco style has regularly been revised, frequently by using luxurious materials – so it’s no wonder that it has great appeal to fashion creatives. For spring/summer 2020, international and Spanish fashion designers took inspiration from flamenco and turned it into a trend on the catwalks. Valentino, for example, focused mostly on the shape and volume of flamenco attire (the label’s dresses were mainly Above (from left): Valentino; Moschino, both spring/summer 2020

lamenco is one of the world’s most striking and visceral forms of music and dance. Passionate, intense and sensual, it is associated with the culture of the Andalusian roma people of southern Spain. It’s an art form of guitar, song and dance that is, above all, vibrant and haunting. For female dancers in particular, flamenco dress is fabulously flamboyant. It is characterised by many long layers, weighty materials, ruffles upon ruffles, bright colours (most notably a recurrence of red) and striking prints. Accessories are on the substantial side. Women dancers, often with elaborately styled hair, wear large dangling earrings, eye-catching necklaces and fringed shawls – and they frequently carry a fan as an integral part of their performance.

monochromatic) with flouncy skirts and with the addition of ruffles. Accessories such as oversized gold earrings, necklaces and bangles all reflected the spirit of flamenco. It wasn’t difficult to imagine the bracelets tinkling rhythmically, with the flick of a wrist, over the sound of a guitar. Bright colours created an artistic, joyful atmosphere at Jeremy Scott’s spring/summer 2020 show for Moschino, very much capturing the power and passion of flamenco. The structure of his SS20 dresses was exaggerated, with huge shoulders and inverted square skirts. The most striking of all was a red and black polka-dot ruffled maxi dress complete with long gloves and big earrings. Roksanda Ilincic’s flamencoinspired range was more subtle, with a few layered ruffles and full, bright dresses in coral and pink, mixed with tomato red. Some looks were more modern, such as a top with thick stripes of pink and red above a layered beige skirt. Victorio & Lucchino, a Spanish brand based in Seville, modernises the idea of the flamenco outfit, creating fresh and chic designs year in, year out. All its designs are made to order, and the label often creates costumes for plays as well as producing decorative accessories that reflect its impressive knowledge of Spanish heritage. ‘Victorio & Lucchino represents the true soul of Andalusia’ is the catchphrase on the brand’s website. Expect flamencostyle dresses, embellished designs and everything in between. Above (from top): Roksanda spring/summer 2020; Victorio & Lucchino’s designs are flamenco-inspired

floral ensembles with ruffles galore. Most looks featured a big hat. Oversized straw creations were worn slanted playfully on one side, and their bright colours ‒ yellow, green and orange ‒ ensured they made a statement. Australian brand Zimmermann always produces very feminine looks, and in its spring/summer 2020 range white broderie anglaise two-pieces and bohemian-style dresses were reminiscent of flamenco attire. Details such as big shoulders, puffed sleeves and ruffles nodded to the Spanish dance trend. At Kenzo, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon produced their final show for the label, taking water as the inspiration. Yet in addition to the ocean theme, they presented

Jacquemus celebrated its 10th anniversary with a spring/summer 2020 show featuring a long, bright pink catwalk backed by lavender fields. Simon Porte Jacquemus, the style set’s current darling, produced a variety of flamenco-inspired ruffled maxi dresses in a colour palette ranging from fuchsia to pale blue. One ensemble comprised a voluminous khaki mini skirt paired with a bikini top and blazer, a look resonating with the quirky creativity of the label. Marc Jacobs presented a playful, happy rainbow of colours for spring/ summer 2020, merging bright hues, patterns and ruffles. Tiered prairie dresses with bell sleeves were seen alongside capaciously wide pink mini dresses and vintage-inspired

various looks connected to flamenco. Polka dots, striking colours, bold shoulders and ruffles were combined in some of their ensembles for this season. For his spring/summer 2020 collection, Dries Van Noten surprised Parisian crowds by joining forces with legendary designer Christian Lacroix. The collaboration resulted in the mixing of myriad prints, from leopard to polka dot and floral. Dramatic, silky ruffled tops, capes and hats paid tribute to the spirit of flamenco. The final look was certainly memorable, featuring a wedding dress with multiple taffeta ruffles on the skirt, white feathers and a sequined hat with a long feather. This was modern flamenco in full glory.

Three-Michelin-starred chef Dabiz Muñoz has launched his Street XO restaurant concept at El Corte Inglés in Madrid. Fusing traditional Spanish cuisine with Asian flavours, he offers a directional dining experience that is truly unique. As the name suggests, the restaurant has a street food vibe, and it is inspired by the hustle and bustle of major metropolises such as Hong Kong and Singapore. Originally launched in 2012, the restaurant concept recently relocated and can now be found at the El Corte Inglés Gourmet Experience. Enjoy a selection of dishes and be sure to sample at least one of the cocktails on offer. SM El Corte Inglés, Calle de Serrano 52, 28001 Madrid, +34 91 531 9884, elcorteingles.com h

The Scent of Spain

In the late 1800s, three friends from northern Spain moved to Madrid in search of fortune. They found work in a small pharmacy and in 1899 the men moved to their own premises – founding Alvarez Gómez. The company started as a fragrance dealer, selling some of the most exquisite scents from across Europe. It wasn’t until 1912 that its signature Agua de Colonia Concentrada was created; a traveller visiting the store showed the team a formula for eau de cologne featuring the fresh scents of lemon, bergamot and rosemary, and they realised that a similar Save up to 15.7% by shopping tax free, see page 38

scent could be made far more special with exceptional ingredients from Spain. For more than 100 years, this perfume, along with its signature art deco bottle, has been a renowned feature of the Spanish fragrance market. It would serve as an ideal reminder of time spent in Spain’s vibrant capital.
