ashion, by its very nature, is always changing, and the global streetwear movement is currently fuelling an unprecedented rise in Dutch streetwear brands. Watch out, London, New York and Paris – Amsterdam is hot on your heels, with labels such as Patta, Daily Paper, Filling Pieces and ETQ cementing the Netherlands’ status on the street-scene map. Stemming from 1980s and 90s Californian skate and sports culture, streetwear has expanded from a trend into a lifestyle. It fuses influences from hip hop, baseball and basketball, making casual comfort part of its DNA. In recent years, social media has supported the meteoric rise of streetwear. The chosen style of many international musicians, it has even been adopted by luxury brands such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Maison Margiela. Collaborations are an integral part of streetwear culture, with accessible brands such as Stüssy, Supreme, Palace, Nike and Adidas working with high-end labels as well as sitting alongside them in independent boutiques and department stores. While streetwear is recognised internationally for its undeniably cool aesthetic, each country, and many individual cities, have their own take on it. Dutch collections are inherently diverse; they are not rooted in 90s Americana like brands from New York and Los Angeles, or in football, like many British streetwear brands. Daily Paper’s heritage comes from West Africa, for example. Its biannual collections

draw inspiration from the region, combining African iconography, symbolism and prints with luxe fabrics and athleisurewear to create unique pieces. Daily Paper’s aesthetic is memorable, as it is one of the few brands to collaborate with artists, charities and musicians from Africa, including rapper Wizkid, Ghana-based artist Prince Gyasi and Elman Peace, a Somalian human rights non-profit organisation. Patta is the Netherlands’ most prominent streetwear export and, like Daily Paper, draws on global influences. The company’s founders, Edson Sabajo and Guillaume ‘Gee’ Schmidt, have roots in Suriname, South America. ‘Cultural background is an important thing to learn about and to keep alive,’ the company’s creative team told Hypebeast. Patta’s ‘out of love and necessity rather than profit and novelty’ ethos summarises its position as an affordable brand that hasn’t let its rise in popularity raise its prices, with pieces such as hoodies, rugby shirts and accessories costing up to €100, and items from special collaborations fetching slightly more. The brand was founded in 2004, around the very time when sneaker hype started to gain momentum. Sabajo and Schmidt travelled the world picking up as many unique and sought-after sneakers as they could find, and shipping them back to their home city. Often cited as the catalyst for today’s flourishing Dutch streetwear scene, Patta now has Above (from left): Daily Paper streetwear; Patta’s Amsterdam store

stores in Amsterdam, London and Milan, as well as stockists all over the world. Patta is a Dutch slang term for shoe, so it’s no surprise the brand has collaborated with the biggest names in the footwear industry, including Nike, Asics, Beams and Reebok, to create some special sneakers. If you consider yourself a sneakerhead, the Dutch trainer touch doesn’t stop at collaborations. You’ll see footwear from Dutch sneaker specialists Filling Pieces and ETQ walking the canals of Amsterdam and beyond. Filling Pieces’ Signature and Innovation Above: ETQ sneakers
collections of affordable luxury footwear bridge the gap between high-street and high-end fashion. Founder Guillaume Philibert’s background in architecture means design is a central focus. All styles are made with Italian leather in factories in Portugal, ensuring the best quality. ETQ is also known for its high design standards. The company’s minimalist philosophy results in timeless shoes that contrast with the retro-inspired sneakers frequently seen elsewhere. Sustainability is inherent to the ETQ approach, so it is fundamentally less influenced by

BIBI VAN DER VELDEN Discovering fine jewellery that is unique, well-made and, most importantly, sustainable can be a challenge – but not in Amsterdam. Bibi van der Velden’s designs, which this season feature everything from caterpillars and snails to lions and unicorns, are created using 18-carat fairly traded gold and intriguing materials such as a 60,000-year-old mammoth tusk and ostrich eggs. Born in New York and raised in the UK and the Netherlands, where she studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie of fine arts and design and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, van der Velden has an innovative perspective that you’ll find hard to resist. Find her work at the X Bank boutique and gallery, which showcases some of the Netherlands’ top design talent. sm

22: WORD ON THE STREET

Elman Peace。
globalblue.cn

22: WORD ON THE STREET

TERJEMAHAN BAHASA INDONESIA 22: WORD ON THE STREET PESAN DI JALANAN Merek fesyen jalanan dari Belanda cepat mendapatkan reputasi global karena gaya, kualitas, dan keragaman. Rebecca Rhys-Evans mengungkapkan nama-nama yang perlu Anda ketahui Pada dasarnya, fesyen selalu berubah, dan geliat fesyen jalanan global tengah memicu kebangkitan yang belum pernah terjadi sebelumnya pada merek fesyen jalanan Belanda. Bersiaplah, London, New York, dan Paris – Amsterdam sedang mengintai
