INTO THE WILD Outdoor clothing and sportswear brand Norrøna was founded in Norway in 1929. Started as a hiking equipment business, the family-run label later expanded into waterproof and windproof garments and many of its lines showcase a typically outdoor Scandinavian lifestyle. A prime example of this is the Falketind range (pictured), which takes its name from a notoriously challenging mountain peak. The collection features lightweight and easy-to-pack technical jackets for both men and women, shell shorts and trousers, as well as accessories. akl Norrøna, Akersgata 30, 0158 Oslo, +47 4889 8600, norrona.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 41

The menswear and womenswear lines are both filled with polka dots, palm-tree prints and pastel pink. Fjord City is an exciting new development at the heart of Oslo. Hannah Lewis takes a tour
On a warm summer’s day in Oslo, locals and visitors alike can be found sunning themselves at Sørenga Sjøbad seawater lido. The pool, part of a five-acre public park in the centre of the Norwegian capital, boasts a beach for relaxing in the sun, wooden decks perfect for a picnic, and a number of seawater pools. These are designed to

well as music and water sports. Beyond Sørenga, Fjord City is also home to some of Oslo’s most unique architectural features, including the stunning Operahuset i Oslo opera house, home of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet. Opened in 2007, this is the largest cultural building constructed in Norway since Trondheim’s Nidaros cathedral was completed circa 1300. The building contains 1,100 rooms; its exterior is covered with Italian marble and white granite, with angles that make it look as though it is rising out of the water that surrounds it. Inside, the space offers a rich and varied cultural programme across three stages. This spring and summer, look out for ballets, including Don Quixote, and operas such as Tosca. Energetic

accommodate everything from a casual family dip to lane swimming and diving. The park, which opened in 2015, is part of an extensive urban development project known as Fjordbyen, or Fjord City. Stretching from the Frognerkilen area in the west of the city to Sydhavna in the south, it covers an area of around 2,260 square kilometres. Oslo city council began the project in January 2000 to incorporate this space into city life, making the stunning clear blue fjord and its surroundings accessible to everyone. Sørenga Sjøbad is named after its location in Sørenga, a new neighbourhood created as part of this development. Vibrant and bustling, especially in summer, the area offers cafés and restaurants, as

Experience the cultural and geographical richness of Oslo visitors can climb up to the roof of the opera house to take in breathtaking views over the city and the Oslofjorden inlet. The opera house shop is a great place to purchase some cultural souvenirs, from opera and ballet recordings to classical music albums. There is also a wide range of books, on everything from opera to architecture, and a selection of gifts and postcards to commemorate your visit. The Barcode Project is one prominent landmark visible from the roof. This ambitious architectural design comprises a row of five multipurpose high-rise buildings. Each has been designed by a different architectural firm and the overall effect of its skyline silhouette recalls a product barcode. The
structures, which house commercial, business and residential spaces, have redefined Oslo’s cityscape. Visitors should make time to explore the vibrant Ekebergparken sculpture park. Initiated and financed by property director and art collector Christian Ringnes, the park was opened in 2013 and covers 25.5 acres, comprising both a sculpture park and a national heritage park. More than 30 different sculptures by a variety of artists are framed by the natural beauty of this stunning location. Notable artists represented here include Damien Hirst and Salvador Dalí, and there is a focus on representations of women. Events and concerts are held throughout the year, so be sure to check the

schedule before your trip. Ekebergrestauranten, located near the sculpture park, is a Michelin recommended restaurant housed in a beautifully restored art deco building in the hills overlooking Oslo. In the summer months, diners can enjoy the outdoor service, which offers views across Oslofjorden. The menu, which changes seasonally, makes the most of the superb produce available in Norway, from fresh vegetables to excellent seafood and local delicacies such as venison. Maaemo is another unmissable restaurant in the area. An intimate space overlooking the waters of the Oslofjorden and Ekebergparken sculpture park, this is the only restaurant in Norway to hold three Michelin stars. Unsurprisingly, booking in advance is a must – and is absolutely worth it to experience the exquisite dishes presented by head chef Esben Holmboe Bang and his team. Maaemo is an old Norse word meaning Mother Earth and seasonal dishes here celebrate the flavours of Norway, showcasing the highest
quality ingredients from across the country. Dishes are finished at the table, with some presented by the chefs themselves. The tasting menu features over 20 dishes, which are striking in their simplicity and rarely feature more than a handful of ingredients. The emulsion of raw Norwegian oysters, a signature dish that is always on the menu, is one of the most unique and delicious things you can taste in Oslo. Wide paths are an added benefit of Fjord City and allow visitors to walk or cycle along the waterfront with ease. This relatively small city is best explored on foot or on two wheels. Once you’ve discovered all Fjord City has to offer, continue along the Harbour Promenade, which stretches for nine kilometres along Oslo’s waterfront. The promenade takes in everything from the new developments at Sørenga to the historic Akershus Festning castle. There are few better ways to experience the cultural and geographical richness of this fascinating Scandinavian city

TABLE TALK Oslo’s coolest restaurants are loved by locals and visitors alike for their stylish settings, warm atmospheres and, of course, worldclass cuisine, as Katie Muxworthy discovers.
With the popularity of new Nordic cuisine showing no signs of abating, the Norwegian capital’s culinary landscape is receiving great attention. Critics and gourmets alike are raving about the city’s restaurants, and with good reason. Oslo’s modern and dynamic dining scene offers an abundance of great venues committed to fresh, seasonal and often organic produce, as well as Michelinrecommended restaurants. Scandinavia is renowned for its hospitality and Oslo’s best restaurants and cafés stand out as much for the quality of their service as for the great taste of their food. These restaurants offer a warm welcome, vibrant atmosphere and great location, with settings ranging from charming outdoor terraces to one of Oslo’s most unusual architectural developments. globalblue.com
VA AG H A L S Offering a unique marriage of traditional Norwegian ingredients with international cuisine, Vaaghals is a culinary delight. The restaurant is located in the city’s striking Barcode development and features a superb, strikingly modern interior. The warm and inviting dining room at Vaaghals is styled as a communal space – known in old Norwegian traditions as a skifte – where sharing is encouraged and dishes are passed around the dining table. The aim is to make visitors feel as if they are eating with good friends and the menu showcases locally sourced ingredients to reflect the changing seasons. Choose the option of seven small courses to sample a range of standout dishes, such as parsnip with duck confit, duck egg, hazelnut and beurre noisette, or cod tongue, celeriac, lovage and mussel sauce. OLIVIA
R E S TA U R A N T F R O G N E R
Olivia offers classic Italian flavours and is one of Oslo’s finest and most authentic pizzerias. The restaurant is situated on the waterfront, giving stunning views of the Oslofjord and Akershus Festning castle, and the ambience is relaxed and stylish, with rustic and industrialchic interior décor. Olivia serves tempting Italian pizza and pasta favourites, made from the best Italian ingredients to create light, fresh and delicious dishes. Choose from traditional tomato-based pizzas with perfectly balanced toppings, such as mozzarella, prosciutto and oregano, or porcini mushrooms, salami and truffle oil. Highlights include Olivia’s white pizzas and we recommend the Mare e Monti, which features a surprising and delicious topping of crème fraîche, marinated scampi, Italian spicy sausage and mixed mushrooms. Olivia, Bryggegangen 4, 0252 Oslo, +47 2311 5470, oliviarestauranter.no
A converted stable provides a charming setting for diners at Restaurant Frogner, which also boasts a relaxing outside garden space where guests can enjoy an al fresco meal on a warm summer’s day. Order the sevencourse evening tasting menu and you will be treated to delicious seasonal dishes such as roasted cod with Brussels sprouts, saltbaked celeriac and potato purée with garlic, and a selection of Norwegian cheeses served with fig chutney and crackers. The restaurant is owned by organic food company Kolonihagen, so you can rest assured that everything produced here is made with natural, fresh, organic and locally sourced ingredients. At lunchtime, Restaurant Frogner offers lighter Norwegian and French-inspired cuisine. Restaurant Frogner, Frognerveien 33, 0263 Oslo, +47 9931 6810, kolonihagen.no/restaurant-frogner

PHOTO: ERIK BERG/DEN NORSKE OPERA & BALLETT

44: When You Shop The World, Shop Tax Free Tax Free
