Norwegian glass and porcelain design studio Wik & Walsøe has been creating elegant handblown pieces for the home since 2006. Known for its bowls, vases and candle holders, the brand has introduced two new colours for its Falla vase for spring/summer 2018: crisp white and ice clear. The vases, inspired by Nordic nature, take their name from the old Norwegian and Icelandic term for a falling droplet, a meaning reflected in their shape. Each piece is delicate and minimalist, but strong in form to make an impression. rre Illums Bolighus, GlasMagasinet, Stortorvet 9, 0155 Oslo, +47 2201 5510, wik-walsoe.no

escribed as ‘Norway’s epicentre of luxury, fashion and lifestyle’, Promenaden Fashion District is the exciting new shopping area in Oslo – a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the city. ‘The inspiration behind Promenaden was to create a fashion

district in the heart of Oslo,’ explains marketing manager Vibeke Bratsberg. ‘Other cities throughout Europe offer this, and we felt our beautiful capital deserved an upgrade.’ The management team behind Promenaden thus set about realising an ambitious dream –

S H O P | 27

The new Promenaden Fashion District is an Oslo must-visit, offering luxury labels alongside the best high-street brands and a choice selection of cafés and restaurants. Hannah Lewis takes a tour

the creation of a district that combines the best in fashion and lifestyle from across the world, comprising everything from high-end and catwalk labels to the best of the middle market and the high street, as well as delicious food and drink options. After five years of hard work,

Promenaden opened in July 2017, quickly becoming a favourite destination for its unique offering of brands – many of which are not found elsewhere in Norway. Cult French designer Isabel Marant opened her first Oslo boutique here last year. The space combines Marant’s signature modern,

28 | F E AT U R E

Gvasalia, has become one of the most talked-about fashion houses in the world. Come here for pieces from hooded sweatshirts to sneakers that question the concept of luxury. For something more classic, step into Hermès, which opened in November 2017 and offers the widest range of the French label’s beautiful creations ever available in Norway. Hermès is perhaps most famous for its leather goods and its silk scarves, and you’ll find a selection of both here, alongside equestrian items, fragrances and jewellery. And be sure to browse the maison’s ready-to-wear, which demonstrates some of the finest craftsmanship in the world – the men’s and women’s ranges are both available.

laid-back take on Parisian chic with elements of Norwegian cabin style: materials including stone, earth, clay and wood give a pure and minimal feel. For spring/summer 2018, look out for lace, ruffles, broderie anglaise and a lot of crisp white – all in Marant’s covetable chic-yet-undone style. Saint Laurent is another must-visit fashion boutique in Promenaden. An interior of mirrors and marble reflects the bold modernity of the brand’s ready-to-wear, which this season expertly balances boho and rock-chick influences. Just a few steps away is the Norwegian flagship of Balenciaga, which, under designer Demna

It’s not just major international labels that are represented in Promenaden. The brand selection has been carefully curated to represent the best of Norwegian and Scandinavian names. Visit one of the district’s two cuttingedge department stores, Steen & Strøm and Eger, to find exceptional local labels such as Samsøe & Samsøe. At Eger, look out for chic Norwegian ready-to-wear label Holzweiler.

And there is more to Promenaden than shopping, as Bratsberg explains. It is a spectacular location in its own right. ‘We also strive to keep the beautiful architecture and building facades impeccable, and flowers and lighting are an important part of what makes the area welcoming,’ she says. And no luxury shopping district would be complete without delicious options for refreshments. Grab a coffee at Steam Kaffebar or an energising juice at Joe & The Juice, which is known for delicious concoctions made from local and organic ingredients. Find traditional French cuisine at Brasserie France and Vietnamese food at Xích Lô. Bratsberg recommends the food

court in the basement of Steen & Strøm. ‘You will find a variety of eateries serving delicious food from different kitchens – Thai, sushi, pizza and more,’ she says. ‘It is really worth a visit.’ Of course, Promenaden’s central focus is fashion, and in order to make sure visitors really make the most of the impressive array of brands on offer, Bratsberg suggests an appointment with resident personal shopper Margrethe Gilboe. ‘Margrethe has much experience working as a stylist,’ says Bratsberg. ‘She knows every corner and every store in the area and will guide you in a smooth and enjoyable way around the district’s different boutiques.’ Above: a Vietnamese dish at Xích Lô restaurant

Naturally, each individual store is also staffed by experts, and all of them will do everything in their power to assist you with whatever advice or recommendations you might require. ‘It has been a long and interesting journey to get where Promenaden is today,’ reflects Bratsberg. ‘It’s a highlight every time we get a new addition to the district. When a new flagship store is opened we feel that our plans are coming true.’ Last year was an exciting one for the district, and this year will be even more so, with a number of exciting store openings as well as seasonal events and offers in the pipeline. ‘I can’t disclose too much,’ says Bratsberg. ‘But I can highly recommend a visit!’

TABLE TALK Oslo’s leading seafood restaurants create wonderful dishes with the catch of the day, as Maria Kirchen-Hill discovers

Given its location on the water, it’s no surprise that Oslo is home to a number of excellent seafood restaurants. Fish plays a large role in Norway’s cuisine. Many people associate Norse food with preserved fish such as smoked salmon or gravlaks, and you’ll certainly find cured fish on menus, but you’re just as likely to find fresh fish and seafood, simply prepared to let their flavours shine through. We have picked three of the best seafood restaurants in Oslo, chosen for their skill with raw ingredients; each has a seasonal menu that changes frequently – often daily – to incorporate the very best of the catch of the day. globalblue.com

DYNA FYR Dyna Fyr is located in a lighthouse in the middle of the inner Oslo fjord, making this a unique experience on your trip to the city. Guests are picked up by boat from the Kiss and Sail pier in Tjuvholmen, and can enjoy light bites and aperitifs during the 25-minute journey. Once at the restaurant, diners are treated to some of the best seafood dishes in the city; the menu changes frequently to make the most of the freshest catch. Dyna Fyr, an intimate space, can be booked for special gatherings, and on selected nights the restaurant also accepts groups of two to eight persons. Booking is essential – and absolutely worth it. RESTAURANT FJORD

SOLSIDEN Solsiden is almost as popular for its views as its food: this waterside venue overlooks Oslo’s harbour and offers al fresco dining that’s perfect for summer. If you’re struggling to pick your favourite from the delicious array of dishes, opt for the chef’s menu, which is designed around the absolute best of the day’s fish market. The idea behind the menu at Restaurant Fjord is to always offer guests the best ingredients of the season; dishes change frequently, making every visit a new experience. Choose the number of courses you would like to enjoy (from three to six) and prepare for culinary delights that celebrate the best seasonal fish and seafood, accompanied by delicious produce that perfectly complements each dish. The accompanying wine menu is perfectly matched and a must for connoisseurs.

26: A WORLD OF STYLE

Balenciaga

Promenaden!» globalblue.ru
