SCANDI- COOL, NORWEGIAN STYLE

PHOTO: JOHN PHILLIPS/GETTY IMAGES FOR OSLO RUNWAY

Oslo Runway may not be the biggest of the world’s international fashion weeks but it’s certainly worth your attention, as Ruairidh Pritchard discovers

O

slo has one of the smallest populations and one of the most northerly locations of all Europe’s capital cities. So when it comes to fashion weeks, Oslo Runway is something of a David to the Goliaths. This season Norwegian designers have shown a mix of sensibility and elegance that perfectly illustrates the nation’s ability to walk the line between Scandinavian trademark cool and easy wearability. ‘The effortless and clean-cut aesthetic that characterises Scandinavian fashion has received massive attention in recent years, 43

46

even earning its own name, Scandi-cool,’ says Ditte Kristensen, co-founder of Oslo Runway. In Norway, she adds, climate and lifestyle influence the way people dress a great deal more than in many other parts of the world. ‘We expect fashion design to complement an active and modern lifestyle – but at the same time cater to the needs our climate dictates.’ This balance of climateappropriate cool was probably best seen in action at Epilogue’s catwalk show during Oslo Runway. The Oslo-based brand was founded by Eva Emanuelsen in 2004 and Previous: ByTiMo spring/summer 2019

including pieces optimistically aimed at the sunnier side of the season. Prim, proper and pretty tea dresses and day gowns were seen in floral prints, lace and flowing chiffon at shows by Line of Oslo, Pia Tjelta and ByTiMo. The latter hosted its show in a beautiful garden on the edge of the city, illustrating that when it comes to the summer months, Norwegians know exactly how to dress to make the most of the season. Dressing for the climate that you have (or perhaps the climate that you want to have) was a key element across Oslo Runway, but fantasy

aims to ‘reinvent classics in a contemporary merge of traditional fabrics, silhouettes and techniques’. For spring/summer 2019, the label showed layered looks made up of elegantly cut wool and leather outerwear and contemporary utilitarian tailoring. That’s not necessarily what one might expect from a spring/summer show, but as Kristensen points out, ‘Norwegian fashion designers have perfected design that both looks and feels good to wear, regardless of weather.’ The collections on show this season truly did run the gamut of northern European spring weather,

and theatricality weren’t entirely lost. Opening Oslo Runway and setting a dreamy tone was Cathrine Hammel. The brand of the eponymous Norwegian designer was established in the late 90s, and it has come to exemplify ethereal Scandinavian dressing. Today it is one of the leading labels among elegant Norwegian names to know. The brand’s spring/summer 2019 presentation displayed models lazily lounging in various sets – a bedroom, a bathroom complete with model soaking in the tub, a group of women enjoying a casual Above: Cathrine Hammel spring/summer 2019

lunch, a couple flirting in a kitchen and a model crying while listening to music. All the players were, of course, dressed in Hammel’s floaty pieces, with colours across a palette of whites, neutrals and black. The touch of live performance fiction helped to underline the fantasy elements in Hammel’s designs. Perhaps the most representative of cutting-edge Scandi-cool came from designer Michael Olestad. An Oslo native, he trained in London and is a former designer for Swedish fashion giant Acne Studios. Providing futuristic silhouettes,

clashing fabrics – think flowing silk wrap dresses paired with sequined tights – and hints of streetwear, Olestad proved Norwegian fashion can stand up alongside Swedish and Danish brands in leading the way in contemporary cool. Yet when it comes to the interplay between Scandinavian countries and their design sensibilities, it seems these are perhaps not as interchangeable as some may think. Siblings they are not – but cousins, perhaps. As Kristensen puts it, ‘the Scandinavian countries have Above: Michael Olestad spring/summer 2019

developed different approaches to building a fashion and design industry, which of course influence the aesthetics. In terms of design philosophy there are differences, but the industries are definitely related to each other.’ Whether it’s the practicality of all-weather dressing, the wearability of traditional, pretty pieces, the elegance of ethereal designs or the cutting-edge cool of futuristic silhouettes, Oslo Runway proves that Norway’s home-grown designers have all the bases covered

TABLE TALK Deliciously distinctive, the modern cuisine of the Nordic countries is based on the purity of the region’s fresh, seasonal ingredients. Rebecca RhysEvans takes a tasting tour of Oslo to sample some of the most appealing dishes

In 2004 several of Scandinavia’s finest chefs joined forces to devise the New Nordic Kitchen Manifesto ‒ and a new gourmet culture came into being. Today the guiding principles of New Nordic cuisine remain true to the original vision. This should be food, the chefs wrote in their manifesto, to inspire and create joy through the use of Scandinavia’s pure natural ingredients. And what ingredients they are, from sustainably produced reindeer meat to healthgiving sea buckthorn. Combining innovation and tradition, Oslo’s best restaurants offer dishes redolent of the seasons and the varied landscapes and seascapes of Norway. On a trip around the city we discovered gourmet delights such as barley and oyster soup followed by hay-smoked pork, and the ingredients in these epicurean creations are truly packed with Nordic flavour. globalblue.com

PHOTO: TUUKA KOSKI

MAAEMO The only three Michelin-starred restaurant in Norway, Maaemo is a wonderfully exclusive venue offering just eight tables plus a chef’s table and serving a set menu, usually of 20 or so dishes. Its pared-back decor of clean lines and blond-wood furniture complements the Scandinavian concept of the cuisine. Maaemo is an Old Norse word meaning mother earth, and the food is made from seasonal organic or biodynamic Norwegian ingredients. Favourite dishes include langoustine with pine, mackerel with wild garlic, and butter ice cream with brown butter caramel. Maaemo, Schweigaards gate 15B, 0191 Oslo, +47 2217 9969, maaemo.no

32 | E X P E R I E N C E

BASS OSLO A gastropub in the trendy Grünerløkka district, Bass Oslo exudes an uber-cool atmosphere. But don’t let that lead you to think they don’t take food seriously. There’s a relatively small menu of inspired dishes, such as halibut carpaccio, and cured duck with pickled fennel, along with vegetarian winners like asparagus and goat cheese topped with brown butter and roasted hazelnuts. Excellent-quality ingredients are, of course, sourced as locally as possible and there’s a great choice of wine. Bass Oslo, Thorvald Meyers Gate 26C, 0555 Oslo, +47 4824 1489, bassoslo.no

KONTRAST The flavours and finesse of the cuisine at Kontrast are remarkable. The ultra-modern, industrial-style interior of this Michelin-starred restaurant is in striking contrast to the exquisitely pretty dishes that it serves. This is a place of polished concrete floors, exposed brickwork and piping, and a busy, open kitchen that is on display to diners. You choose between à la carte or tasting globalblue.com

S H O P | 33

BRUTUS With its stool seating at long communal tables, and its trendy staff, Brutus draws a cool crowd. Although the menu is very New Nordic, the kitchen attracts talented chefs from all over the world as Oslo is now a vibrant hub for aspirational young professionals. There are two tasting menus to choose between, or small-plate dishes to share for those wanting to graze tapas-style. Hero dishes include barley and oyster soup and skate with pink cauliflower. Brutus, Eiriks gate 2, 0650 Oslo, +47 2238 0088, barbrutus.no

menus, and although like all the New Nordic restaurants the dishes change seasonally, frequently served popular offerings range from grilled skrei with smoked potatoes to raw shrimp from Kristiansand accompanied by pickled spruce shoots and an orange and pineapple weed vinaigrette. Kontrast, Maridalsveien 15, 0175 Oslo, +47 2160 0101, restaurant-kontrast.no

SØRENGA SEAWATER POOL A new neighbourhood set along Oslo’s harbour promenade, Sørenga offers cafés, restaurants and great outdoor spaces, including the Sørenga Seawater Pool. If temperatures permit, take a dip here – it’s very much the place to catch some rays in warmer weather, and there’s no entrance fee. Along with a fjord pool, there’s a children’s pool, a sandy beach, wooden decks and a large recreational area. The pool is also open in winter for cold-water swimming, but we recommend heading here when the Nordic sun shines. Place Of Interest
