PERFECT BLEND L’Artisan Parfumeur was at the vanguard of today’s niche perfume brands when it was founded in 1976 by perfumer and chemist Jean-François Laporte. The celebrated house mixes classicism with the avant-garde, and its trademark Mûre et Musc scent (100ml, €102) remains a global bestseller – the blackberry and musk blend smells just as fresh today as it did in 1978 when it was frst produced. The brand has several branches in Paris and a new fagship store is due to open at the end of this year. rd L’Artisan Parfumeur, 24 boulevard Raspail, 75007 Paris, +33 (0)1 4222 2332, artisanparfumeur.com * for map go to page 46
For spring/summer, Nudie Jeans is going back to its Gothenburg roots. The jean brand’s hometown ofers a rich wealth of inspiration, especially in springtime. Nudie’s current collection features a romantic palette of foggy greys and thistle greens, mixed with light indigo and raven black. This season, practicality meets contemporary heritage. The denim remains classic and washed for that broken-in, heavy-worn look – pair it with weathered chambray tops and camoufage bomber jackets. Customers can buy with a clear conscience as the Swedish company only works with sustainable and organic denim. rd Espace Kiliwatch, 64 rue Tiquetonne, 75002 Paris, +33 (0)1 4221 1737, nudiejeans.com * for map go to page 52

THE SWEET SPOT The rue du Bac area of Paris is home to some of the best pâtisseries and chocolatiers in the city. Hannah Lewis takes a tour
While Paris’s rue de Bac is best known as one of the Left Bank’s most chic shopping streets, there’s another reason locals love the area, and it’s more prêt-à-manger than prêt-à-porter. In recent years, the street and its surrounding area have become home to some of the city’s most prestigious pâtisseries, bakeries and chocolatiers, making this a must-visit destination for anyone looking to indulge their sweet tooth. Located on rue du Bac itself, La Pâtisserie des Rêves was founded in 2009 by hotelier Thierry Teyssier and pastry chef Philippe Conticini. Together, they wanted to 59

reinvigorate the world of French pâtisserie, to inspire a love of traditional cakes and to create for others the kind of warm memories that they themselves associated with such treats. As Teyssier explains, their approach was to create ‘a new consumer-focused concept: a new experience in the shops and at home’. The result is a store where the décor is eclipsed only by the excellence of its products. Glass cases suspended from the ceiling display beautiful cakes, pastries and sweets, including modern twists on classic French creations, from madeleines to millefeuilles. duo wanted to create a ‘living magic moment’, and it really is an entertaining boutique – a lively space that will delight adults and is, crucially, also very child friendly. Be sure to sample the Paris-Brest here – a dessert made of choux pastry and praline cream – which Le Figaro magazine named the best in the city. For a more traditional approach to pastry, visit Angelina, a Parisian foodie institution founded in 1903. The original tearoom on rue de Rivoli has hosted the cream of French society for over a century, and was a favourite haunt of icons including the French writer Marcel Above: the interior of La Pâtisserie des Rêves
Proust and designer Coco Chanel. The rue du Bac boutique, which opened in 2013, may be the smaller cousin of the original location but it’s the perfect place to discover Angelina’s classic products. The Mont Blanc – a pastry dome featuring chestnut vermicelli concealed under a meringue top and whipped cream – is the best-seller. Keep an eye out as well for bottles of the famous L’Africain hot chocolate, which takes its name from a secret blend of three different African cocoa beans. Chocolate lovers should also pay a visit to Chocolat Chapon. A rarity even among chocolatiers, owner

Patrice Chapon makes his own chocolate, following the process from bean to bar, and his prize-winning creations are all of impeccable quality. From boxes of delicate chocolates, perfect to give as a gift, to brightly packaged slabs of rare, intense dark chocolate, Chapon’s array of creations reveals the sense of childhood wonder that he infuses into his craft. ‘I seek more to feed childhood memories than to feed appetites,’ he explains. Sweets, pastries and chocolates evoke indulgence and fun, something Hugues Pouget understands perfectly. At Hugo & Victor, his gourmet pastry shop, Pouget produces everything from macaroons and ice creams to show-stopping traditional French cakes. Seeking inspiration from the flavours themselves, Pouget focuses
on three core tastes: chocolate, vanilla and caramel. Other seasonal offerings are available, but these three flavours are the heart of his process. Seek out the bite-sized financiers, the sleekly engraved chocolate slabs or the book-shaped chocolate boxes, which allude to the pâtisserie’s literary-inspired name. If all this sweetness is

becoming too much for you, pay a visit to Des Gâteaux et du Pain, where master baker David Granger uses his lifelong passion for bread-making to create some of the best loaves in the city. Granger’s partnership with pâtissière Claire Damon makes this a standout store. Granger and Damon met in 2005 and both wanted to create something new and exciting. The result is Des Gâteaux et du Pain, a store featuring artisan breads as well as pastries, cakes and other sweet treats. In what is traditionally considered a male-dominated industry, Damon proves that a female pastry chef is a force to be reckoned with, producing some of the best desserts in the city. Look out for her exemplary tarte au citron (lemon tart), indulge in a creamy cheesecake, or snack on a sweet cream-filled pastry. The croissant is a pâtisserie classic and no culinary tour of Paris would be complete without at least one of these buttery crescents. You can’t go wrong with Claire Damon’s. ‘In a city filled with great croissants, this one stands out,’ writes Ann Mah on Vogue.com. IT’S IN THE BAG Discover the history of must-have handbags and this season’s most desirable pieces. Dominique Fenn reports
From certain shapes and styles to limited-edition prints, every so often a handbag comes along that transcends all trends and individual tastes to become the ‘It’ bag of the season. Here are some of the contenders for this spring/summer. The Faye bag from Chloé achieved cult status over the past year and heralded a new generation of ‘It’ bags. Feminine and unfussy, 60

the bag features a bold ring and pendant chain, evoking the era of 1970s glam rock. A signature feature of the Chloé brand, the ring becomes more functional for spring/summer, linking the handles on some styles and forming the handle on one model in particular. Rainbow-coloured tassels continue the 70s trend. Louis Vuitton has long been regarded as an artisan of the Right: Louis Vuiton spring/summer 2016

luxury luggage world, originally establishing its reputation with travelling cases. Used by the world’s elite, its exquisite custom-made trunks and hatboxes were the height of luxury and practicality. Louis Vuitton introduced new bag shapes throughout the 1900s, with its monogrammed handbag reaching peak popularity in the late 1990s under the direction of then creative director Marc Jacobs. Exciting collaborations followed, including partnerships with designer and graffiti enthusiast Stephen Sprouse and Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, which gave the monogram a new lease of life and kept the fashion house at the top of
every list of must-have accessories. For this spring/summer, the heritage brand is on a punky cyber trip, inspired by sources such as cult science-fiction film Tron and the Japanese animé character Evangelion. With a collection featuring silver chains on black and pink leather, and a new monogram logo pattern, creative director Nicolas Ghesquière is taking the brand on an exciting journey into the future. Valentino is another brand with distinctive signature detailing. The rock studs adorning a range of leather goods, from shoes to purses, add a toughness to the otherwise romantic collections from design

duo Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli. This season, Valentino’s instantly recognisable bags are embellished with turquoise stones in between every stud, updating the classic style for the new season. Highlights of the pre-spring collection are heavily embellished handbags, which feature butterflies in flight on a backdrop of blue denim. The real beauty of an ‘It’ bag is in the detail, and recent collections have shown that the way a handbag is worn can have quite an impact on an overall look. Over the shoulder, under the arm or hands-free entirely – each holding style changes our perception of a piece, and each lends itself to a different style crowd. According to Kenzo’s designers, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim,
their inspiration this season was a woman who was ‘travelling the world, picking up souvenirs wherever she went’. Kenzo’s leather utility belts, featuring multiple pouches in a variety of shapes and shades, will ensure you can carry all your essentials while keeping your hands free. For women who prefer an understated look, the surprise hit of the season comes from Mansur Gavriel, whose chic sack-style bag is both elegant and utilitarian in its design. The Bucket Bag, with a drawstring top and strap to wear across the shoulder, comes with a detachable zipped bag inside and a discreet logo at its base. Also available in a mini size, the bag is crafted from Italian leather and comes in a variety of hues, from elegant black to soft blush. This is an instant classic. In recent history, fashion houses have developed signature-shape bags – think Fendi’s Baguette or the Mulberry Bayswater. Brands have taken handbag personalisation to new heights, as seen in Prada’s Lettering project, and encouraged women to adapt the way they carry their bags – the Céline way is tucked under your arm and pulled close to your body. While stealth-wealth style had taken over for a few years, the catwalks this season featured plenty of eye-catching arm candy – minimalism is truly over. With a diverse mix of shapes, styles and colours, Parisian labels offer a bag for every taste and occasion. The ‘It’ bag is back with a vengeance. Which one will win you over?

Spanish brand Camper has been furnishing our feet with fun, stylish shoes since its founding in Mallorca more than 40 years ago. The picturesque island of its conception has long been an inspiration to the brand’s designers, and for spring/ summer creative director Romain Kremer has infused the collection with the spirit of the Mediterranean isle, using bright colours to reflect the vibrant personality of this ever-popular holiday destination. A playful, modern twist on a classic men’s style, these shoes are sure to lift your wardrobe for the warmer months.

TAKE A WALK
A great way to see and learn more about Paris is by taking a walk along the banks of the river Seine. Begin at Port de l’Arsenal boat basin, which connects the charming Canal Saint-Martin to the Seine. Continue up the left bank to the Tino-Rossi gardens on the SaintBernard quayside, which features work by renowned sculptors such as Constantin Brâncuşi. Step into the square du Vert-Galant public garden, accessible from the Pont Neuf bridge, which offers stunning riverside views.

globalblue.com
36: It’s In The Bag 铁环作为寇依的标志 globalblue.com
