A FIRST FOR VEJA Paris’s Le Marais neighbourhood recently welcomed Veja’s first ever store. Founded 15 years ago, this chic French brand rapidly became a leader in eco-conscious fashion with its environmentally friendly trainers. In line with this approach, the label’s inaugural store has been designed with sustainability in

mind. The sophisticated space has a stripped-back aesthetic and does not feature any unnecessary decoration – here, the brand’s trainers are the main attraction. GRC Veja, 15 rue de Poitou, 75003 Paris, +33 (0)1 4026 6101, veja-store.com

reasons why the street has begun to look a little worn over recent years. But, with plans for a €250 million makeover, a wealth of new store openings and a place at the heart of Paris’s preparations for the 2024 Summer Olympics, the avenue des Champs-Élysées looks set to enter the new decade in style. Synonymous with sophistication and Parisian elegance, this celebrated shopping street is home to an array of popular boutiques and luxury stores, and many major fashion houses consider their Champs-Élysées address among their key locations. idely regarded as one of the most beautiful streets in the world, the avenue des Champs-Élysées is one of Paris’s most famous landmarks. A key part of the city’s history, the avenue dates back to the 17th century when it was conceived as a tree-lined promenade by Louis XIV’s famous gardener André Le Nôtre, who also designed the gardens at the Palace of Versailles. Today, the two-kilometre road is one of the busiest boulevards in the French capital, visited by an estimated 100,000 people every day who come to shop, eat and soak up its unique atmosphere. 2019, feature alongside historic brands, including Guerlain, which opened its flagship on the street in 1914 and epitomises the city’s elegant aesthetic. Guerlain’s store was refurbished in 2013 by interior architect Peter Marino, who perfectly captured both the brand’s heritage and its contemporary appeal, transforming it into a Parisian cabinet of curiosities. ‘Nationally and internationally, the Champs-Élysées store is the image of the Guerlain maison,’ the brand says of its flagship location. ‘It’s a place of beauty, patrimony, expertise, and prestige. Located on one of the most famous avenues in the world, the boutique welcomes people from all over the world, to let them discover the history of the maison and its most beautiful creations.’ In 2019, community leaders unveiled an ambitious €250 million plan to renovate the street, and last year many of the street’s leading stores seemed to anticipate the rejuvenation with renovations of their own. Bulgari opened its refurbished store, also designed by

Marino, and Swiss watchmaker Omega revealed its revamped 143-square-metre space, where visitors can discover the brand’s watch, jewellery, leather goods, eyewear and perfume collections. Hugo Boss unveiled its store makeover last autumn and, at 1,200 square metres, it is the brand’s largest boutique worldwide. Taking its aesthetic cue from the work of interior designer Pierre Paulin, the renovated store features high-tech, interactive furniture and dedicated areas for the brand’s personalisation, Made to Measure and Made for Me services. ‘Reopening the Boss store on the Champs-Élysées is a milestone in our retail endeavours,’ CEO Mark Langer says. ‘I am very happy with the result, which translates the creative vision of the brand to this location.’ A visit to the Champs-Élysées is a must to discover the best names in French fashion, from cashmere designer Eric Bompard’s eponymous label and leather goods brand Longchamp to luxury jeweller Mauboussin and Cartier’s celebrated boutique, situated

opposite the Arc de Triomphe monument. Leading French perfume and beauty brand Lancôme also opened its first flagship store here in 2019. Global brand president Françoise Lehmann describes the new venue as ‘a true home of beauty and happiness, where our guests are invited to experience and delve into what the brand has to offer in terms of beauty products, services, personalisation, gifting and technology.’ Situated at number 52, the space has been designed to evolve, hosting five pop-ups a year and featuring a sophisticated, immersive digital installation at the entrance to the store. The brand’s classic products are displayed over two floors, with separate areas for perfume, foundation, powder, blush, lipstick and mascara, as well as a space for personalised skincare consultations. The most important aim of all is for guests to leave feeling happy, Lehmann explains. ‘We want this flagship to become a must-see and an iconic beauty address for Parisians and visitors of the world alike.’

2020 looks set to see this world-famous destination go from strength to strength. Moncler is among the new openings scheduled this year, following on from the label’s pop-up store that featured its key designer collaborations. The Italian outerwear brand is expected to set up a permanent address at number 119. The latest plans for the Champs-Élysées, created by architect Philippe Chiambaretta, will see a return to the boulevard’s roots, with more pedestrianised areas, less traffic and lots of green space. It is an ambitious, eco-friendly vision for the street and Chiambaretta says the redesigned boulevard will ‘demonstrate French excellence in gastronomy, culture, fashion and green technology. It should reveal what the nation does best.’ In a country renowned for chic sophistication and effortless elegance, the luxury stores and boutiques of the avenue des Champs-Élysées are the ultimate showcase for the best in French fashion Above (from top): an artist’s impression of the proposed new-look Champs-Élysées; Lancôme’s cutting-edge boutique

CAFÉ SOCIETY Speciality coffee, the highest grade of coffee available, is at the forefront of a new wave of café culture in Paris. Ginger Rose Clark picks out some of the best places in the city to enjoy this elevated drink

Paris’s renowned café culture can be traced back for centuries and rose to prominence in the 20th century through intellectuals and artists such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Pablo Picasso, who frequently socialised in the city’s coffeehouses. Coffee has become a huge global trend and in recent years a new kind of café has emerged in the French capital, focusing on speciality coffee. Paris’s leading cafés and coffee shops serve a delicious range of options, from flat whites to filter coffee, using only the finest, carefully sourced and expertly roasted coffee beans. globalblue.com

Maison Kitsuné’s third Café Kitsuné, located in Paris near to the Palais-Royal and the Louvre, is the brand’s own take on a Parisian bistro. It offers morning-to-night opening hours and uses Costa Rican coffee beans roasted in France. There are a range of breakfast and lunch options, and you can follow your meal with a perfect pick-me-up espresso. From 6pm, expect cocktails with Japanese influences from the café’s expert mixologists. The café also sells everything from coffee beans to Café Kitsuné porcelain tableware. For spring/summer 2020, world-renowned French beauty brand L’Occitane launches its Immortelle Overnight Reset eye serum, which aims to combat the signs of fatigue. Clinical tests have shown that after a week of using the new serum, dark circles and wrinkles appear reduced, skin appears smoother and radiance is boosted. The bottle is partly made from recycled glass and the box is made with card from sustainably managed forests. L’Occitane also offers a recycling service at its boutiques for beauty product pumps and other difficult-torecycle packaging, and you can return your L’Occitane empties to receive 10% off any full-sized product.
