LAP OF LUXURY Lisbon’s Avenida da Liberdade now has even more to offer visitors, with the opening of a new boutique from multibrand fashion retailer Loja das Meias.

The interior, designed by Artica architects Cristina Santos e Silva and Ana Menezes Cardoso, has a minimal, modern décor to highlight the luxury products on display. The colour scheme was inspired by Portuguese artist Querubim Lapa’s painting A Mulher (The Woman), which hangs in the boutique. For centuries Portugal’s shoemakers have been crafting some of the finest footwear in Europe; the term Made in Portugal has long been a guarantee of quality craftsmanship in the field. While French and Italian designs have been prominent in recent years, there has been an impressive resurgence in Portugal’s standing; Portugal’s leather footwear exports grew by 213% from 2006 to 2013, according to Business of Fashion figures. Both at home and across the world, connoisseurs and fashion industry creatives alike have rediscovered the rich history and enduring quality of Portuguese footwear.

These processes are almost sacrosanct in certain regions, especially Porto and Guimarães in the north, and Alcanena, about an hour’s drive north of Lisbon. Here families of shoemakers are still producing footwear using time-honoured methods. The skill is so impressive that leading international fashion brands commission many of the shoes made in these regions. Both Swedish minimalist powerhouse Cos and Spanish high-street superbrand Zara look to Portugal for the creation of their finest footwear offerings.

While the manufacture of shoes for international brands is crucial for business, no foreign label can capture the spirit at the heart of the country’s artisanal shoe industry like Portugal’s own footwear designers. Consumers worldwide

Renewed enthusiasm for lasting craft and style has proved the perfect spur for a new generation of shoemakers in Portugal. Building on the nation’s leather heritage, a wave of creatives is heralding a return to popularity for Portuguese footwear.

One such designer is Luis Onofre, who has changed direction from making shoes for international luxury brands to creating luxury Portuguese shoes for his own eponymous label. ‘Portugal was

always an excellent producer of footwear,’ he says. ‘I belong to the third generation of Conceição Rosa Pereira, a company that produces shoes for international luxury brands worldwide.’ For Onofre, it was crucial to extend the reach of Portuguese-made shoes beyond a national audience. ‘When I started Luis Onofre in 1990, I always knew that my brand should aim at the global luxury market.’

As Onofre is quick to state, other European-made shoes may have traditionally held a higher pedigree in the minds of many, but Portuguese-made shoes are now – rightly – considered some of the best in the world.

He explains that the Made in Portugal label represents ‘a belief that excellence and quality are not exclusives from Italy or any other referenced producer. Portugal knows how to offer quality shoes and excellence as well as any other main player in the footwear industry.’

The success of Onofre’s own label has meant that the brand is constantly expanding; there are plans to open flagship stores around the world, including Africa and the Middle East as well as the US. But the focus remains always on ‘hard work, dedication and the ability to believe in constant improvement’. Onofre adds that these are the bedrock qualities in creating new footwear collections.

He says that whenever he starts to design a new pair of shoes ‘every detail must be considered: design and elegance must work with technology and handicraft to offer consumers excellence’.

At Sapataria do Carmo in Lisbon, one of the oldest shoe shops in Europe, co-owner Alexandra Lourinho has also seen a rise in the popularity of shoes made in Portugal. She credits this growth to an increased focus on superb quality ‒ the kind that has been integral to Portuguese footwear

In the last decade the industry ‘has been growing its popularity around three main pillars: handicraft, design and high quality,’ explains Lourinho, who runs the boutique with her partner and two friends. ‘More and more the chosen product is the one that is a versatile, long-term item but at the same time unique and authentic.’

Sapataria do Carmo was founded in 1904 and remained family-run until 2012 when it was taken over by Lourinho and her colleagues. They have breathed new life into the store while at the same time keeping its key focus on traditional shoes handcrafted by Portuguese artisans. For Lourinho and her team, this balance is crucial.

She points out that since the 16th and 17th centuries Portuguese craftsmen have been working with leather. Adding a modern outlook and the creative eagerness of young Portuguese designers makes ‘the perfect match,’ she says. ‘We are proud to dedicate ourselves to selling shoes made in Portugal.’

A wave of open, progressive Portuguese designers is lighting up the country’s design scene right now.

From Porto to Lisbon, creatives are drawing on their nation’s rich craft heritage and working it into modern, cutting-edge pieces in a style that’s all Portugal’s own.

The Alma de Luce brand, whose motto is ‘feel the memory’, upholds traditional Portuguese craftsmanship through the production of furniture and artefacts that evoke stories and experiences from times gone by.

Conceived by Helena and Carlos Costa, it comprises individual collections that showcase a range of pieces united by the memory of

the beautiful and the historic. One example is the Naperon collection, naperon being the Portuguese word for doily. It includes a cabinet made from glossy black-lacquered wood with a handcrafted inlay of topaz Swarovski crystals and legs of solid walnut; through the crystals, the look and feel of a naperon is etched on to the furniture. “Queria explorar diferentes estéticas, técnicas e materiais”, explica Paula Sousa. “Com a Ginger & Jagger podemos explorar a ligação muito íntima com a natureza. Adotamos uma abordagem de design contemporâneo inspirado nas

the crochet naperon is longstanding, as the Costas explain. Crocheting naperons was a pastime of the wealthy classes during the Renaissance and 300 years later this became the work of nuns, who sold their craft to feed needy children during the 1940s.

Ginger & Jagger is a young design house founded in 2012 in Porto by Paula Sousa to create handcrafted, modern products inspired by nature. ‘I wanted to explore different aesthetics, techniques and materials,’ explains Sousa. ‘In Ginger & Jagger we could explore a connection with nature that is very personal, from within.

We have a contemporary design approach inspired by nature’s formas esculturais da natureza, com uma mescla única de materiais como o cobre, latão e mármore, todos fabricadas à mão em Portugal. O resultado são peças que materializam as texturas e formas encontradas na natureza.”

Os produtos da Ginger & Jagger incluem armários, mesas, espelhos, tapetes e iluminação. O engenho nasce da capacidade que a Paula Sousa tem de transformar materiais naturais em peças de design elegantes e charmosas. “O nosso espelho Vine tem uma moldura feita à mão em ramos de videira moldados numa armação em bronze”, explica Paula Sousa, acrescentando que esses ramos são do Vale do Douro, casa do muito famoso vinho do Porto.

De La Espada offers simple design styles by individual artists who are rapidly building up their reputations em madeira, e através da manufatura e distribuição a partir da fábrica De Oliveira na região do Porto. sculptural shapes, with a unique blend of fine materials such as copper, brass and marble, all handcrafted in Portugal. The result is pieces that embody the textures and shapes that are found in the natural world.’

Ginger & Jagger products range from cabinets and tables to mirrors, rugs and lighting. The ingenuity comes from Sousa’s ability to transform natural materials into sleek, desirable design pieces. ‘Our Vine mirror has a frame handmade from vine branches moulded in brass casting,’ says Sousa, adding that the branches were found in the Douro valley, home to Portugal’s celebrated port wine.

De La Espada was founded by Portugal-born Luis De Oliveira.

The house partners creatives who design and curate their own solid wood pieces, and supports them through the manufacture and distribution of their works from De Oliveira’s factory in the Porto region. The result is a new take on

simple design styles by individual artists who are quickly building reputations in their own right. They include architect and designer partners Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu, together known as Neri & Hu, who describe their work as being ‘rooted in cultural provocation’.

Their Capo collection injects mid-century design with a tailored aesthetic; chairs and tables have a functional feel that is elevated by the use of elegant black walnut or white oak, and accented by leather belt-strap arms and small brass details. The duo’s Shaker collection takes its cue from the 19th-century movement of the same name ‒ the ladder back of a chair allows it to be hung on the wall just as the Shakers would have done.

Arguably the most established of Portugal’s new wave of design houses, Boca do Lobo has been helping to secure the country’s place on the design map since 2005.

Interpreting the past for a new take on modern design, the

Porto-based company produces elaborate, luxurious creations with a focus on ornate elegance and sumptuous materials. As the company’s head designer Marco Costa notes, ‘each piece has a unique, timeless character, revealing attention that goes down to the smallest detail.’ For 2016, Boca do Lobo has released the Metamorphosis series, inspired by the Franz Kafka novella after which it was named. The set reflects the magical realism of the book’s theme: a man who wakes up to find himself transformed into an insect.

The collection, says Costa, ‘has a special meaning that has been a part of Boca do Lobo’s purpose and creative DNA ‒ breaking creative boundaries and constantly making something better.’

While each of these design houses displays distinct differences

in style and source material, they are united by a common theme: the desire to carve something new and exciting out of a thread of history, beautiful base materials and Portugal’s longstanding devotion to handicrafts. ‘The glamour comes from the materials, the proportions, the design typology and the narrative behind the piece,’ says Sousa, succinctly summarising these Portuguese designers’ recipe for success

A designer Ana Teixeira de Sousa reinterpreta a magnífica herança artesanal portuguesa para um público jovem com a linha Sophia Kah. William Lee Adams vai até ao coração do processo criativo

Fashion designer Ana Teixeira de Sousa likes to joke that she was born ‘in the middle of needles and fabrics.’

Her grandmother owned a textile factory in Portugal and she spent her childhood making good use of the endless spools of material around her. ‘I loved creating little dresses for my dolls and playing with the fabrics,’ she says. ‘It was my favourite playground.’

This grounding ultimately led to the creation of Sophia Kah – the sought-after womenswear label founded by the designer in 2011 and named after her grandmother. In a relatively short space of time, the brand has gone global.

A estilista Ana Teixeira de Sousa gosta de brincar, dizendo que nasceu no meio “das agulhas e dos tecidos”. A sua avó tinha uma fábrica de têxteis em Portugal, e ela passou parte da sua infância no meio de intermináveis rolos de tecidos. “Adorava fazer roupas para as minhas bonecas e brincar com os tecidos,” diz ela. “Era o meu sítio preferido para brincar.”

Esta vivência levou à criação da Sophia Kah – a procurada marca de roupa feminina, fundada pela estilista em 2011 com o nome da sua avó que, num curto espaço de tempo, se tornou global. Lojas de luxo, como a Harrods em Londres ou a Barneys em Nova Iorque têm peças Ana Teixeira Sousa,

and Barneys New York, now stock Teixeira de Sousa’s range of immaculately crafted pieces, from floor-sweeping organza gowns to sheer cocktail dresses.

‘My dresses are light and easy to wear, always highlighting the woman’s figure at its best,’ she says.

‘Kah girls can travel the world and arrive at their destination always looking brand new.’

To capture that feeling of newness, the Porto-born, London-based designer looks to the past, building her clothes around the centuries-old art of corsetry, with her gowns typically nipped in at the waist. Rather than using traditional corset boning, however, she creates the structured look through waist-defining seams, thoughtful lacing or strategic grosgrain trim.

The universally flattering silhouette works across a variety of styles – from sleeveless, knee-length mididresses to lace gowns with

Esta silhueta universalmente lisonjeira funciona em muitos estilos –vestidos sem mangas, pelo joelho, vestidos longos em renda com caudas compridas ou roupa diária em seda estampada.

A forma da Sophia Kah corporaliza força, que Ana Teixeira de Sousa transmite sob uma forma “leve e confortável”, resultando em peças femininas e delicadas.

Começando pela escolha dos tecidos, como tule, brocado e renda, o material tipicamente usado pela marca. Ana explica que “a renda é mágica: sedutora sem ser vulgar, dramática, mas divertida, tudo em simultâneo.” Ana Teixeira de Sousa aplica esta estética à maioria das suas peças, mas sem comprometer a versatilidade nas suas coleções. um corpete numa transparência audaz em renda e tule aplicados em organza com decorações em dourado. A linha da Sophia Kah apresenta também vestidos longos assimétricos com uma banda de tecido no pescoço e cauda em renda negra sobre uma camada de renda em marfim.

Incrivelmente, a Ana Teixeira de Sousa não tem formação em moda; ela bebe dos ensinamentos da avó e muitas dessas técnicas são segredos do negócio, e é por isso que trabalha maioritariamente com artesãos da sua terra natal.

“Portugal tem um passado fabuloso de fabrico,” explica ela. “É uma honra para mim criar um artigo de luxo made in Portugal (fabricado em Portugal).” O passado pode

billowing trains or eye-catching silk-print daywear. The Sophia Kah shape embodies strength, but Teixeira de Sousa renders it ‘in a light and comfortable way’ to keep it feminine and soft. She does this primarily through her choice of fabrics, which includes tulle, brocade and the brand’s signature lace. She explains that ‘lace is magical: sexy but not vulgar, dramatic but fun, all at the same time.’

Teixeira de Sousa applies this aesthetic to the majority of her dresses, without compromising on the versatility or range of her collections. Her pieces, which could be worn for weddings, red carpets or chic nights out, include a signature dress with a daring sheer bodice, created from lace and tulle layered

over organza and embellished with golden thread. The line also features an off-the-shoulder gown with bandeau neck and a train crafted from black lace with a contrasting ivory lace overlay.

Remarkably, Teixeira de Sousa does not have any formal fashion training; instead she draws on the methods and techniques passed down to her from her grandmother.

Many of these skills are considered trade secrets, which partly explains why she works exclusively with artisans in her homeland. ‘Portugal has a fabulous manufacturing heritage,’ she says. ‘It’s an honour to me to create a luxury product made in Portugal.’

The past may inform her design process, but her cosmopolitan life in London keeps her vision both contemporary and on-trend. The result is an attention-grabbing mix of modern and traditional.

‘My inspiration comes from all over the place but I always think “would X or Y wear this in London?”,’ she explains. Today, the Xs and Ys the designer has in mind include celebrity names such as singer Florence Welch, author and journalist Plum Sykes and actress Keira Knightley, all of whom have worn her creations on the red carpet and at high-profile social events.

Global superstar Beyoncé also famously wore a Sophia Kah lace corset gown, with plunging neckline, to her mother’s wedding. The label is a favourite of the glitterati and those in the know, yet still off the general public’s radar – the very definition of stealth wealth.

Despite the growing attention surrounding her creations, Teixeira de Sousa doesn’t measure success by achieving a buzz or hype, nor does she define the Sophia Kah woman as a celebrity. ‘She is a free spirit who loves to celebrate life,’ she says.

With that in mind, she designs for convenience, giving her globetrotting customer statement pieces that can easily fold up and fit into a suitcase.

‘I was born into a family of textile manufacturers,’ she says. ‘Since I’ve been alive I’ve had contact with the fashion world through production.’

The Portuguese take their coffee very seriously, and the country’s dedication to the drink has rendered it something of a national obsession. The appreciation of coffee is particularly ardent in Lisbon and Porto where there’s a wealth of charming cafés and coffee bars. Visitors to these appealing cities may find it hard to avoid stopping for a traditional Portuguese coffee – a bica.

This is served black in a short, narrow cup and is around the size of the Italian counterpart, espresso.

Enjoying a bica is part of the nation’s morning ritual, and this form of coffee is far more popular than the Portuguese equivalent of milk-based cappuccino or latte. Throughout the day the Portuguese may have up to four or five bicas, with breakfast, lunch or a sweet treat, such as a traditional pastel de nata custard tart. But with or without an accompaniment, enjoy a cup of coffee and you’ll be getting a real flavour of Portugal.

CAFÉ A BRASILEIRA One of Lisbon’s classic cafés, Café A Brasileira opened on Rua Garrett, in the city’s picturesque Largo do Chiado neighbourhood, in 1905. Its name was inspired by the half-kilo sacks of Brazilian coffee beans originally sold in the store.
