FUN AND GAMES March 2018 saw the opening of a temporary space by Hermès entitled I Tre Giochi di Prestigio (or ‘the three prestigious games’). It is the setting for a sequence of three playful displays curated by designer Matali Crasset and contemporary art specialist Stéphane Corréard. Each display runs for three months and each is inspired by one of three 19th-century French inventors. Objects from the Hermès collections are presented alongside works by contemporary

Exotic skins, such as python and water snake, as well as suede feature in the range, and this season also sees the introduction of polka dots and sequins. TARTAN TALES For its autumn/winter 2018/19 menswear collection Italian fashion house Ermanno Scervino found inspiration in a variety of British styles. WATCH THE TIME This year marks the 25th anniversary of the launch of Omega’s Seamaster Professional Diver 300M watch. To celebrate, the brand has unveiled 14 new Seamaster timepieces, including the pictured model (€9,200). Key features include an update on the bezel, now made from ceramic with a diving scale in the brand’s ‘Ceragold’ (a mix of ceramic and 18-carat gold) or white enamel. FLOWER POWER Driven by a love of art and fashion, Roberto Coin founded his eponymous jewellery brand in 1996. It has since won over the world with its beautiful pieces. ANTARCTIC ADVENTURE Moreschi and prestigious fashion and design school Istituto Marangoni Milano have created a collection inspired by expeditions to Antarctica. Students at the institute visited the Moreschi factory to observe manufacturing techniques. The brand then created a genderless capsule collection incorporating the designs of three students. FIRST IMPRESSIONS Autumn/winter 2018/19 marked Paul Andrew’s debut as Salvatore Ferragamo’s creative director of womenswear, following a stint as design director of women’s footwear. The Studio bag is the first signature handbag Andrew has devised in his new role. Luxury footwear brand Jimmy Choo has announced the reopening of its Rome flagship. The extension and refurbishment of the store on Via dei Condotti has been overseen by prestigious Christian Lahoude Studio in New York. It has carefully blended the contemporary and elegant styles for which Jimmy Choo is known with the architecture of Rome. Floors and vaulted ceilings are finished in clean white marble. Hints of yellow, inspired by the travertine stone that adorns the city’s windows and archways, can be seen across furnishings and fixtures. talians do not like being restricted to a rigid set of rules,’ says Elisabetta Canali. ‘They like to express their creativity freely in all aspects of life. Having said that, if a man isn’t comfortable with what he is wearing he can never be elegant,’ she adds. If anyone can comment on the design process and wardrobe choices of Italians, it is Elisabetta Canali. She is group communications director of the menswear label Canali, and is part of the third generation of family members to run the brand. She knows more than a thing or two about the style preferences of Italian men and why they won’t be saying goodbye to the suit. ‘The Italian aesthetic is all about expressing refinement without ever seeming forced or unnatural,’ she says. ‘The suit is the anchor of a look – if the anchor is firmly in place, you can get creative with your accessories with little risk of losing the elegance factor.’ It would seem that at Canali the balance between creative flair and comfortable, refined familiarity is key to the success of the Italian suit. That, and the country’s talent and supreme levels of craftsmanship. ‘Italian craftsmanship in any field is known the world over due to a profound level of skill and artistry that goes into any Made in Italy garment,’ Elisabetta Canali says.

The balance between creative flair and comfortable familiarity is key to the success of the Italian suit ‘This is a great source of pride in Italy,’ she adds. ‘And this leads to an effort on the part of companies and artisans alike to offer the top-quality creations that the world has come to expect.’ If the legacy of Italian suiting is anything to go by, those expectations are constantly met. For decades the most well-heeled men in the world have flocked to tailors in Italy to purchase the finest suits made from the most luxurious fabrics. While traditional craftsmanship and skill still remain at the forefront of Italian design, innovative and new technologies in fabric design and creation are also key elements. This marriage of old and new is further underlining the appeal of the Italian suit for new generations. Canali’s autumn/winter 2018/19 collection makes use of new technologies to create a host of suits and blazers that are designed to perfectly complement the lives of modern men. An important consideration for Elisabetta Canali is allowing the fabric to ‘offer characteristics like flexibility, breathability and resistance to stains, water and the creases of synthetics, while remaining completely natural.’ Another of Italy’s leading tailors is Corneliani. Founded in 1930 and initially creating outerwear and specialising in raincoats, the brand expanded to encompass a full menswear wardrobe. leading names in exquisite Italian suits. For autumn/winter 2018/19 Corneliani’s collection is firmly rooted in the craft of tailoring, with items that the label believes will ‘open a repertoire of possibilities’ for its customers. Wearability is of the utmost importance, with muted palates of sophisticated, dense tones and soft and streamlined silhouettes making up a collection of luxurious pieces that are adaptable and feel familiar. Familiarity strikes a chord with Brioni’s collection this season, too. The Roman brand has consistently been at the cutting edge of menswear design, and it was the first label in the world to hold a men’s catwalk show, which took place in Florence in 1952. However, for autumn/winter 2018/19, the Brioni collection is a lesson in refined subtlety and sartorial classicism. According to the brand, the Brioni wardrobe’s guiding principle for this season has been to rethink traditional, everyday pieces in a luxurious and comfortable light. There’s no doubt that traditional tailoring is at the collection’s core. However, thanks to innovations in manufacturing and in fabric production, the collection’s highlights include formal overcoats, blazers and jackets with a revised fit. There’s a more centred lapel in some pieces; sharper outlines for others; perhaps a shoulder ever so slightly readjusted to provide more give. These are subtle design nods that adapt traditional pieces for easy, modern wearability. Perhaps it’s the idea of familiarity and functionality that holds the secret of the success of Italian tailoring. MAESTRO Giuseppe Zanotti is the designer behind some of the world’s most renowned and coveted footwear. He talks to Ruairidh Pritchard about his inspirations, Italian craftsmanship and the perfect pair of shoes

‘A

g reat pair of shoes should create an emotion – whether it is confidence, excitement, seductiveness, unpredictability – and above all a strong feeling of individuality,’ says Giuseppe Zanotti. He should know. For decades Zanotti has been one of the leading names in Italian footwear. From the architectural heels that made his name to the luxury sneakers that have won him new acclaim, Giuseppe Zanotti is

up there with the most respected shoemakers in the world. Born in 1957 in the small town of San Mauro Pascoli outside Rimini on Italy’s Adriatic coast, Zanotti grew up obsessed with art, design and music. ‘It was music and my early career as a DJ which initially led me to fashion,’ say Zanotti. ‘I was drawn to the style of the artists on my LP covers. I loved fashion because I loved music. And music has always been a big part of my life and my

Today, music and musicians play a huge part in Zanotti’s brand design process, drawing inspiration from the essence of every genre, from the rebellious to the romantic.’ Today, music and musicians still play a huge part in Zanotti’s brand. Some of his most famous fans are renowned stars in the worlds of pop and rap music; Giuseppe Zanotti shoes have become a mainstay of red carpet fashion, worn by celebrities including Madonna, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and Rihanna. Some famous fans have even become collaborators; Jennifer Lopez, Zayn Malik and Kanye West have all worked with Zanotti on hugely successful footwear collections. ‘I find it a true privilege to collaborate with a variety

of artists of different genres,’ says Zanotti. ‘I get inspired by their creative processes and their thinking. Working together, we are able to merge our passion and energy and encapsulate both their style and my own.’ Giuseppe Zanotti’s celebrity collaborations each have distinct aesthetics and an authenticity sometimes lacking in collections of this type. Authenticity is crucial to Zanotti’s vision. At a time when many global brands are outsourcing their manufacturing, every pair of Giuseppe Zanotti shoes is hand-crafted in the brand’s own factory in the town where the designer was born. ‘Our factory is based

in San Mauro Pascoli, a region where luxury footwear manufacturing has a long-standing tradition,’ he says. ‘We employ expert craftsmen and embroiderers and source all components such as silk fabrics and leather from the most renowned silk factories in Como and the best tanneries in the territory. ‘Italy has always been a cradle of highquality craftsmanship,’ he adds. ‘Style is inherent to our culture and history in so many ways. What Italians do so well is blending tradition, technology, artisan expertise and style. We apply the latest production methods but keep the personal touch of artisans, which brings sensitivity and emotion into the manufacturing process.’

The autumn/winter 2018/19 collections are as original and exciting as Giuseppe Zanotti’s worldwide fans have come to expect. For women, highlights include bold crystal embellishments across suede boots, sandals and sneakers, while gold heel pumps strike a sophisticated, luxurious tone. More playful and alluring designs include the Bonjour Nuit slippers, and thigh-high boots in animal print and denim with poppers running the length of the leg. The brand’s signature G heel is seen in glistening gold on pumps and boots. The men’s offering for this season is a lesson in versatility. The more conservative end of the men’s collection is inspired by a distinctly modern-dandy attitude, ranging

from elegant slip-on loafers to eye-catching crystal-adorned monk strap shoes. There are sneakers too, of course, as the designer continues to transform the sporty staple into a must-have luxury item. This season, hightop sneakers take a seriously sophisticated turn in burgundy velvet; in an innovative twist, socks embroidered with the designer’s signature are built into more classic black and white leather sneakers. The collection is rounded out by boots featuring a clever use of zips; the footwear can be worn at full biker length, or low, with the removal of a zip-off top band. With such a varied offering for both

men and women, Giuseppe Zanotti is a shining example of how an established brand can navigate the seemingly boundless arena luxury fashion is moving into. ‘A woman can slip on a pair of embellished heels one night and a pair of cutting-edge sneakers the next day,’ says Zanotti. ‘The beauty of modern luxury is the absence of rules.’ This freedom and variety begs the question: what does Giuseppe Zanotti consider to be the perfect pair of shoes? ‘Strength and a thoroughly contemporary attitude’, he says, though not without one addendum. ‘What ultimately makes a pair of shoes perfect is the way a person wears them’
