Darren Hopes The cover illustration for SHOP Rome, created by Darren Hopes, was inspired by our feature on page 46 about the designers looking under the sea for inspiration this season, drawing on fsh, shell and coral motifs. His use of ethereal textures and exquisite detail in this underwater scene refects the feature perfectly. Darren enjoys working with mixed media to create visually stunning art; his other clients include GQ magazine, Sony PlayStation and Penguin Books. SUBTLE SCENTS The launch of Prada’s Olfactories fragrances has been almost silent; even the bottles are discreet. Perhaps this is because these 10 scents speak for themselves. The fragrances ‘disregard tradition’ and are intended to ‘trigger the subconscious mind.’ Each is characterised by a graphic image of a woman’s face and a flower – the images are stills from the 10 short videos produced for the perfumes’ launch. The fragrances include Purple Rain, Cargo de Nuit and Tainted Love. rd Prada, Via dei Condotti 88-90, 00187 Rome, +39 06 679 0897, prada.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 86
Arthur Arbesser’s debut as womenswear creative director of Iceberg was inspired by the playfulness and colours of Italian artist Enrico Baj, which he combined with the label’s intrinsic sports-luxe aesthetic. The resulting bold stripes and sharp graphics are for women who want to make a statement. One of the standout looks was this collared shift dress (€480), teamed here with a metallic handbag. The lace-up detail and vertical stripes make this a thoroughly modern choice. Arbesser has also visited the brand’s 40-year archive and focused on a key Iceberg product: knitwear. The resulting collection is therefore particularly strong on knits – which works, despite this being the spring/summer season. th Iceberg, Via del Babuino 87-88, 00187 Rome, +39 06 3260 0221, iceberg.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 82

SADDLE UP Spring/summer 2016 sees the launch of the Saddle bag from American label Coach. A reworking of two pieces from the Coach archives, Bonnie Cashin’s 1972 courier pouch and the 1975 small courier pouch, the bold, classic Saddle (€450) is a simple yet standout piece. The updated design, formed from a single piece of leather, demonstrates Coach’s expertise in leatherwork; the brand launched in 1941 as a leather accessories specialist. The bags are available in two sizes and a range of colours, from neutrals to paintbox brights, and each is finished with subtle but stylish contrast stitching. rd Coin Excelsior, Via Cola di Rienzo 173, 00192 Rome, +39 06 3600 4298, coach.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 95

Floriental (€95) is the newest scent that Comme des Garçons has added to its prospering fragrance repertoire. Redefining the rules of perfumery, the Japanese brand founded by Rei Kawakubo has blurred the boundaries between floral and oriental, creating something completely new. This contemporary fragrance, which is, ironically, based around the cistus, a flower with no smell, has no definite top, middle or base note, so each ingredient emerges and recedes in an opulent confusion. Key ingredients include sandalwood, labdanum resin, vetiver, pink pepper and plum liqueur. Floriental eau de parfum is presented in a shiny red version of Comme des Garçons’ signature pebbleshaped bottle. rd Degli Effetti, Piazza Capranica 79, 00186 Rome, +39 06 679 1650, comme-des-garconsparfum.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 94

QUALITY TIME The use of blue leather for the strap of the Eliros Chronographe (€695) makes this timepiece particularly striking and unusual. It was created by luxury Swiss watchmaker Maurice Lacroix and, while the design is thoroughly contemporary and the watch features the latest technology, it remains true to the longstanding, exacting standards of Swiss watchmaking. This sand-coloured V-neck jumper (€167), for example, with its three-quarter length sleeves and lightweight material, is the ideal cover-up for breezy summer evenings. here was a hotly anticipated debut at Emilio Pucci this season, as young designer Massimo Giorgetti presented his frst collection for the famous Italian fashion house. Anyone who was worried he would struggle to fll the boots of his predecessor Peter Dundas had their fears put to rest. A confdent and accomplished collection hit the catwalk, boldly coloured and flled with youthful, experimental touches, the signature style for which Giorgetti won acclaim at MSGM. One concept in particular turned heads in this collection, and that was Giorgetti’s unabashed embrace of all things sea-themed. The Emilio Pucci label was founded on the island of Capri, and perhaps it was this that inspired the new designer to look underwater for his inspiration. Colourful fishes swam across garments, realised in cartoon-bright embroidery or painterly prints, and loose tailoring was invigorated with vivid underwater scenes. In Giorgetti’s hands, the natural colours of underwater life were exaggerated and became

kaleidoscopic, transforming simple pieces into statements as tropical fish, sea turtles and crabs clung to cocktail dresses. Giorgetti’s most fantastical motif told a magical underwater love story, with mermaids and sailors appearing alongside ropes, shells and sea creatures. Elsewhere the aesthetic was more subtle but just as effective; sheer sweaters were adorned with shells, layered over billowing white trousers or worn atop blue and white printed jersey, cleverly creating the illusion of rippling waves. As this Pucci collection proves, a new take on nautical is emerging. Gone is the classic yet predictable yacht-friendly wardrobe and in its place is a fresher, more surprising approach to the trend, inspired not only by life at sea but Above: two looks from Emilio Pucci spring/summer 2016

also by life under the waves. Italy is famous for its beautiful coasts with their plentiful wildlife, and, as the summer season arrives, the nation’s designers are celebrating this heritage, creating luxurious, uplifting pieces that pay homage to the great Italian seaboard and its part in shaping Italian culture. Fausto Puglisi, a relative newcomer to the Milan roster, is known for his intricate embroideries. Like Giorgetti, Puglisi looked to the sea for his central motif this season; 3D shells in shades of coral, pink, gold and bronze clustered together on skirts, crop tops and bodices, peppered the hems of outerwear and peeked out from Grecian-style draped silk, a flash of pattern and colour in otherwise colourblocked looks. Here was a decidedly elegant, grown-up telling of the nautical story, the shells standing out against black cocktail dresses, nestled among Puglisi’s expert embroideries, which glistened in gold and silver. Gold and glass beading stood out like spikes from bodices and across gladiator-style skirts, among which the

shells appeared like jewels, a luxurious scatter of underwater treasure. At Dolce & Gabbana, every collection reads like a love letter to Italy. It’s hardly surprising, then, that sea themes made an appearance as design duo Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce looked to their nation as seen by visitors. Dresses featured cartoon-style motifs depicting beaches and seaside activities, or bold photo prints of Italy’s picturesque coastal regions, and a sharp black tuxedo was embellished with jewelled crabs and starfish. Seaside life is vibrant and filled with colour, providing exciting and beautiful points of reference. But sea-inspired style isn’t all about bold motifs and extravagant colour schemes. Max Mara presented one of the strongest collections of the season. While wholly different from those of Pucci or Puglisi, it too presented an unforgettable and eminently wearable vision of nautical fashion. Horizontal stripes, the classic combination of red, white and navy, oversized gold buttons – this might sound literal, even familiar, but in the hands of creative director Ian Griffiths it was anything but.
Straying from the traditional colour palette, Max Mara mixed in blacks and yellows, cleverly avoiding any sense of costume. The brand’s signature soft tailoring was played out in Riviera-inspired prints and classic nautical details. Breton striped tees, glimpsed under simple jackets whose epaulettes and gold hardware gave just a hint of the naval, offered a subtle take on the trend, but elsewhere the theme emerged boldly. A fringed, striped and sparkling pencil skirt was paired with a lighthouse motif T-shirt. Many looks were realised head-to-toe in red, white and blue, with striped summer jackets layered over yet more stripes, and loose pants adorned with rope prints. Max Mara is famous for understated elegance, and here the simplest pieces and silhouettes gained new life through the clever, modern interpretation of a traditional theme. Take tips from the Italians this season and inject your wardrobe with a dose of the nautical. Whether you’re inspired by Max Mara’s vision of life on the decks or Pucci’s underwater fantasy, nothing says summer like a nod to the seaside

senior director of the house’s watch design centre. ‘I imagine the pieces in a line-up, as products that could fit very well in our already established assortment of watches, at the right moment and the right price.’ It’s an ethos that respects Bulgari’s rich heritage yet allows for innovation and fresh ideas. This chapter in the company’s storied legacy only opened just under 40 years ago, in

he stately cream façade of Bulgari’s flagship store on Rome’s prestigious Via dei Condotti sits alongside equally eminent heritage brands; neighbours include Dior, Hermès and Cartier. Bulgari, however, is woven into the fabric of this charming part of Rome, close to the wellknown Spanish Steps, like no other brand. It’s this store that a young Elizabeth Taylor visited during a break from filming Cleopatra in 1963, sparking her life-long romance with fine jewellery – and with Bulgari in particular. Alongside its fantastical gemstones, seductive Serpenti bracelets and opulent Bzero1 rings, Bulgari has also carved out a niche in the world of watches, creating era-defining, impeccable timepieces that push the boundaries of horology, with each year proving more exciting than the last. ‘When I imagine new products, I have to imagine something that works with Bulgari’s roots. It has to be about the evolution of Bulgari,’ says Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani,

A thread of daring innovation runs through many Bulgari offerings
1977. This makes Bulgari a relative newcomer to the haute horology world, where centuries of craft and expertise lend weight to the great Swiss names that dominate and where upstarts are viewed with a critical eye. But Bulgari’s secret was to invest in a Swiss production facility, in Neuchâtel near Geneva, and ensure that all of its movements and complications were made in keeping with Swiss watchmaking tradition. Its distinctive Italian flair and showmanship were thus blended carefully and seamlessly into the precise standards of Swiss watchmaking. Ever since Sotirio Voulgaris founded Bulgari in 1884, launching a jewellery emporium which would go on to dominate the world of luxury, this Italian exuberance has been firmly embedded in the DNA of the house. But far from being pressured by the weight of Bulgari’s legacy, the house’s prestige actually allows Stigliani the freedom to make his own decisions. ‘Good design is about constraint and those constraints drive the aesthetic,’ he says. ‘I might be inspired by a beautiful engine or even by the Colosseum in

Rome, but sometimes you cannot use those shapes to make a watch. So the inspiration has to be appropriate and it has to make sense.’ Make sense it does, if models such as the now iconic Octo, Diva and Serpenti watches are anything to go by. The latter was the brand’s first foray into horology, a jewelled watch first created in the 1940s that reflected the winding design of the house’s Serpenti jewellery. This predated Bulgari’s undertaking of horology as a serious enterprise, which could be said to have started with the Bulgari Bulgari. The model made its debut in 1977 and is particularly notable for the elongated font on the dial and a discreet classicism; it remains the house’s best seller. And while an inherently traditional aesthetic has long been the calling card of Bulgari’s timepieces, a thread of daring innovation has also run through its offerings. The brand bought the Daniel Roth watch company in 2000. Daniel Roth, the eponymous watchmaker, is known for his complicated watches and fantastical tourbillons, and for Bulgari he has created dazzling timepieces with skeleton faces so that the exceptional inner workings are on dazzling display. The sense of horological exploration continues this year with experimentation in the realm of smartwatches. The Bulgari Diagono Magnesium concept watch, unveiled in spring 2015, is fitted with a near field communication chip which allows it to link with portable devices
A sense of horological exploration continues as Bulgari turns to smartwatches carrying the Bulgari Vault app, meaning activities generally carried out using a smartphone can be achieved through the watch instead. While the Diagono Magnesium is still under development at the moment, the inside word in watch circles is that it will arrive in 2016. Alongside Bulgari’s exacting and impeccable craftsmanship and design, pioneering 21stcentury technology that Sotirio Voulgaris could never have envisioned when he launched the brand might soon come as standard

rom Hollywood superstars to European aristocrats, the world’s most stylish men know that Rome is the place to find the finest bespoke tailors. Home to luxury international labels and traditional family-run sartorias, the Italian capital boasts an impressive range of tailoring options that will satisfy even the most discerning clients. One of the city’s leading forces in modern bespoke menswear is Andrea Luparelli, whose tailoring house, Sartoria Ripense, has cultivated a long list of international customers, some of whom fly to Rome specifically for his expertise in made-to-measure menswear. Following in his tailor grandfather’s footsteps and driven by an inherited passion and a love of traditional Italian tailoring, Luparelli opened Sartoria Ripense 16 years ago on the Via di Ripetta, a short walk from the historical Piazza del Popolo. Luparelli describes Sartoria Ripense as a laboratory as much as a tailor’s shop. His focus when creating a suit is ‘taking into consideration the proportions and personal shape of each client to work to create

the perfect fit,’ he explains. ‘Everything starts in front of a mirror, with the client and the professionals, the tailors and consultant, supporting and guiding the choices with their experience.’ It’s during this consultation stage that Luparelli’s clients discover the sartoria’s vast library of fabrics, finishes and accessories. The Sartoria Ripense ‘laboratory’ experiments result in an entirely bespoke wardrobe, from suits to scarves and everything in between. ‘Even a belt buckle can be customised,’ says Luparelli. It’s clear that Luparelli’s mission is to keep traditional Italian tailoring within the modern menswear wardrobe. However, Sartoria Ripense is not the only tailor to attract some of the world’s sharpest-dressed men to Rome. Luxury labels with boutiques across the globe have based their best bespoke services in the city – including Italian menswear powerhouse Canali. Founded as a family-run business in 1934, Canali has become one of the most renowned Italian labels for beautiful suits and formalwear, but it’s the Su Misura (made-to-

A client who books a Su Misura consultation has the full expertise of the label’s master craftsmen, paragons of fine Italian tailoring, at their disposal. ‘It all starts with the choice of model, understanding the style that best suits the physique and personality of the customer though a relationship of trust and interaction with the master tailor,’ says Elisabetta Canali. ‘We then use fabrics sourced from the best mills in Italy’s Biella district and offer, among others, 100% pure wools, mohair, cashmere, vicuna, silk and linens. They are skilled professionals who take time to listen to the client and understand their bodies, their lifestyles and their needs.’ It isn’t just suits that are getting the personal treatment in Rome; luxury labels offering personalisation and made-to-measure services line the city’s historic streets. On Via dei Condotti, one of the city’s premier shopping streets, luxury Italian label Ermenegildo Zegna offers clients a vast array of ultra-personalised finishing touches, including monogrammed buttons, personalised shirt cufflinks and even bespoke fabrics with the wearer’s name woven into the selvedge. MY NEIGHBOURHOOD The Jerry Thomas Project revives American speakeasy-style cocktail
mixing in the heart of Rome. This intimate club was set up in 2010 by four skilled bartenders, Leonardo Leuci, Roberto Artusio, Antonio Parlapiano and Alessandro Procoli, who wanted to share their experience and knowledge with other bartenders as well as with curious drinkers. Leonardo Leuci shares the high points of the Trastevere neighbourhood, and some of his favourites from further afield, with Theresa Harold thejerrythomasproject.it

‘I love Trastevere because its tiny streets are full of great bars, bistros and cafés. There’s a constant holiday atmosphere and people always look friendly and relaxed even if they are just on their way home from work. You can also find small artisan shops or a nice vintage boutique. ‘For me, the most underrated sight is the Basilica di Santa Maria. It’s amazing, but people seem to not notice it, maybe because they’re too focused on where to go to eat. ‘You’re most likely to find
me in a bar known as Ma Che by the locals, which is the meeting point for most of the people in the neighbourhood. I also like Meccanismo in Piazza Trilussa, which is a nice cocktail bar and restaurant with a convivial atmosphere,

elegant environment and friendly staff. ‘If I have friends visiting, I’ll take them to Appia Antica [the Appian Way], Castelli Romani [a group of wine-producing towns located a little way outside of the city], Ariccia [a picturesque town to the south-east of Rome] or Ostia Antica [an archaeological site near Rome’s Ostia district]. It’s a break from the frenzy and chaos of the city and these offer a perfect union between vineyards, lakes, forests, ancient art and gastronomy. ‘My favourite walk in Rome is along Via del Governo Vecchio, in the heart of the city. The street is full of great vintage shops, organic restaurants, quirky cafés and ancient monuments, all within a five-minute walk of each other. I would strongly recommended checking out the view from the Pincio terrace, which looks out across Piazza di Spagna, Piazza del Popolo, Villa Borghese and many other main attractions. ‘In my downtime, I might well go to Ostia, especially in winter when the beach is almost deserted and you can
‘Quote in here please Excereas veris escicvbusti tenimen ihicium, aut veroyuivitae praterur ipsums dolupt dolorese’ really feel at one with the sea. I also find the Giardino degli Aranci on the Aventino, with the keyhole through which you can see San Pietro [Saint Peter’s basilica], very peaceful. It isn’t so hidden any more, but still worth a look. The Basilica di San Clemente al Laterano is one local

secret. Although it’s considered a minor basilica, it’s a unique monument in the history of Rome, combining architecture, art and history. ‘My absolute top tip is to simply walk everywhere, walk and get lost – there’s always something to discover in the Eternal City.’

PHOTO: © GORUNWAY.COM

58: In Focus: Bulgari Watches
Bulgari

Sartoria globalblue.com
98: When You Shop The World, Shop Tax Free

46: The New Nautical
globalblue.com
