IN STEP WITH NATURE
Baldinini’s spring/summer 2017 collection has its foundations in nature, explored via different themes, palettes and textures. A floral garden is expressed through patchwork flowers combined with leather in tropical colours and tattoo prints. A desert is evoked in a more neutral combination of colours that suggests the sunrises of the Sahara, exemplified in styles such as these flat black gladiator-style sandals adorned with woven beige leather and gold-coloured metal hardware (€420). The collection emphasises the relationship between modernity and dynamism, offering heels of different heights, contrasting soles and pieces encrusted with Swarovski crystals. rre Baldinini, Via del Babuino 150, 00187 Rome, +39 06 3601 0347, baldinini.it FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 78

From the Colosseum to the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, Rome’s iconic sites are a rich source of inspiration for local designers – who are repaying their creative debts with generous restoration investment. Sally McIlhone reports
R
oman designers need only step outside their doors to find inspiration. In a city that boasts stunning architecture, captivating historical sites and some of the most notable luxury brands in the world, it’s understandable the latter would be inspired by the former. Indeed, some labels are so taken with the enduring icons of the Eternal City that they have felt compelled to celebrate them in uniquely dedicated manners, from investing in renovations to holding fashion shows with the sites as a backdrop. Leather goods brand Tod’s has worked in partnership with the city authorities responsible for architectural heritage to restore Rome’s most impressive historical 102

structure, the Colosseum amphitheatre. President and CEO Diego Della Valle is said to have contributed €25m to the project, the first phase of which took five years and was completed in July 2016. First the surfaces were mapped, and then cleaned using gentle sprays of mist to remove decades-worth of dirt and grime, before cavities and cracks were repointed and loose stucco replaced with more authentic materials. The restoration covered 13,300 square metres of surface and the installation of new gates. The Colosseum’s appearance is vastly improved, with formerly blackened areas now gleaming white and enticing passers-by to enter. areas, where gladiators and animals once awaited their fate. The aim is to allow visitors to be able to enter these areas from outside the Colosseum’s walls. ‘When the arena’s completed, this place will be even more beautiful,’ Italy’s culture minister Dario Franceschini told the Guardian newspaper. The restoration will also mean that the amphitheatre can in future be used for what Franceschini refers to as ‘cultural events of the highest level.’ The Trevi Fountain, a spectacular water feature surrounded by statues of mythical figures and noble steeds rising from the depths, has been restored by Fendi at a cost of over €2m, with the brand calling the project ‘a labour of love’. The completed works were unveiled on 3 November 2015, and Fendi further celebrated the site by holding its 90th anniversary couture show at the fountain in July 2016. A transparent catwalk allowed models to glide across the surface of the water, which seemed appropriate for a show themed

Rome’s historical features continue to provide inspiration to a new generation of designers, who, in turn, do not hesitate to show their appreciation and gratitude to the Eternal City boutique to give back to the brand that’s given back to Rome. Jewellery designer Delfina Delettrez draws inspiration from a less high-profile monument, a fountain in the Coppedè district built in the 1920s by architect Gino Coppedè. Blending medieval, baroque and art deco and nouveau styles, the architect’s use of imagery has influenced Delettrez’s work. ‘It’s all hidden symbolism, but with an ironic touch. It’s like mixed fairytales, coming up and creating a whole different parallel universe; so there is gothic, art deco, liberty, the medieval,’ says Delettrez. ‘It’s incredible.’ From fairytale fountains to iconic steps and the most impressive historical site in the city, Rome continues to provide inspiration to a new generation of designers – who, in turn, do not hesitate to show their appreciation and gratitude to the Eternal City Above (from top): the jewellery designed by Delfina Delettrez takes inspiration from the works of architect Gino Coppedè; the Coppedè district in Rome

et al. And, while the film flits between locations in the city and visits iconic landmarks including Saint Peter’s basilica and the Trevi Fountain, one street takes a starring role: Via Veneto. Via Vittorio Veneto, known colloquially as Via Veneto, was originally built in the 1880s real-estate boom that followed the incorporation of Rome into the kingdom of Italy. By the 1950s the street, under its current name, had become a haven for the well-heeled in Rome. Its alluring bars and restaurants attracted Hollywood stars as well as the wealthy elite from Italy and beyond; it was a favourite haunt of famous names including Audrey Hepburn, Orson Welles, Tennessee Williams and Coco Chanel. After a day’s filming at the Cinecittà Studios, stars would let their hair down in the glamorous venues along the boulevard. Though these heady days are now in the past, Via Veneto remains one of Rome’s most famous streets. Its sense of luxury now tinged with a charming nostalgia, the street is an

idely acclaimed as a cinematic masterpiece, Federico Fellini’s 1960 film La Dolce Vita follows writer Marcello Rubini, played by Marcello Mastroianni, as he journeys through the upper echelons of Roman society. A tabloid journalist, Rubini glides between the most glamorous locations in the city, meeting everyone from wealthy heiresses to famous actresses to the intellectuals of the day. As he traverses ‘la dolce vita’ (‘the sweet life’), Rubini searches for love and happiness, struggling to reconcile his desire for a meaningful emotional life with his love of the decadence and materiality of the life he sees around him. Critically acclaimed, La Dolce Vita won the Palme d’Or at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival, as well as an Oscar for best costume design that same year, and is now acknowledged as a classic. Its continued success has immortalised the glamour and excess of 1950s Rome, captured with such skill by Fellini, Mastroianni

From today’s Hollywood stars to international dignitaries, the elite come to Harry’s Bar when visiting Rome enticing destination for visitors to Rome. While the Café de Paris, one of La Dolce Vita’s most memorable locations, has closed its doors, those who want their own taste of the sweet life should pay a visit to Harry’s Bar. While offering everything anyone could want from a modern cocktail bar, the venue, opulently decorated in leather, polished wood, marble and gold leaf, still presents a slice of 1960s Roman high life. It’s no surprise that the elite still come to Harry’s Bar when visiting Rome – from today’s Hollywood stars to international politicians and dignitaries. To explore the length of Via Veneto is to experience not just the excitement of modern culture but also the pull of the old Harry’s Bar is known for its cocktails and visitors can enjoy live piano music each night. When it comes to fine dining, the Doney restaurant is another elite haunt. Executive chef James Foglieni is known for his superb Mediterranean cuisine, which he presents using only the best local and seasonal ingredients. The menu is creative but distinctly Italian in flavour – think beef tartare with smoked aubergine caviar and black truffle. Or try Café Doney, housed in the same beautiful building, and known both for its relaxed light dishes in the daytime and for its perfectly mixed cocktails in the evening. In the warmer months, the terrace tables prove perfect for people-watching. La Dolce Vita is famous for its fashion, so be sure to visit Via Veneto’s luxurious fashion boutiques. At Versace, Donatella Versace’s high-octane glamour is the 2017 answer to Fellini’s vision, bringing extravagant Italian luxury bang up to date. approach to glamour. For spring/summer, look out for beautiful nautically inspired pieces that recall the glamour of the 1950s and 1960s – perfect for creating your own sweet life. At Casuccio e Scalera, discover some of the finest traditionally made footwear in Italy, from classic styles to very modern models. Via Veneto is at the heart of Rome, and to explore its length is to experience not just the excitement of modern culture but also the pull of the old. Starting at Piazza Barberini, stop to admire the Fontana del Tritone, as well as the smaller but no less beautiful Fontana delle Api, then weave your way along Via Veneto, taking in the beautiful late 19th-century architecture as you go. The ornamental crypt under the church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini provides a unique detour for those interested in the baroque style. The other end of Via Veneto reaches Porta Pinciana, an ancient gate to Rome that still stands today. This is an unmissable sight, but beyond it is one even more so: the Villa Borghese gardens. These 17th-century gardens are some of the most beautiful in the world. Standing here, it’s easy to imagine why Fellini saw Rome as the place to experience la dolce vita

Annarita Pilotti is the CEO of Italian company Loriblu, which specialises in elegant, top-quality, glamorous shoes. She tells Maria Kirchen-Hill the secrets of creating truly luxurious footwear
In 2015, Annarita Pilotti was named president of the Assocalzaturifici Italiani, the national association that represents the interests of Italian footwear brands. It was an historic decision, as Pilotti is the association’s first ever female president. For Pilotti, it was a prestigious and exciting recognition of the success and significance of Loriblu, the renowned luxury footwear brand of which she is CEO. Loriblu was founded by Pilotti’s husband, Graziano Cuccù, in 1974. Cuccù, who is responsible for all of the brand’s designs to this day, had his first major success with the Mignon shoe. Launched in 1978, it sold over 110,000 pairs. The brand continued to grow, developing a strong reputation for quality

and design in Italy and beyond. In 1996, Cuccù won the Scarpetta d’Oro award with a standout shoe realised in gold and zircons, cementing Loriblu’s reputation as a brand at the forefront of innovation and luxury in shoe design. Though Pilotti only officially joined as CEO in 1994, she has been invested in her husband’s business since its inception, and has watched Loriblu grow from a small label into an international brand. The first monobrand boutique opened in 2009 on Rome’s famous Piazza di Spagna, and today Loriblu has 45 standalone stores across the world as well as countless stockists. Cuccù remains president, responsible for the design of every collection, while Pilotti as CEO is in charge of sales, marketing and communications. It is, she says, ‘a team effort’, and she takes care to recognise the input of every team member. ‘My husband Graziano coordinates a very close-knit team that thinks and realises each model,’ she explains. ‘With

the marketing and sales team, I also offer suggestions on styling, colours, trends or structures that we consider strategically useful. The contribution of everyone and the final shared choice, after a very careful selection, permits the birth of the collection.’ The values on which Loriblu was founded have not changed since the company’s inception: reliability, service, quality, products that are 100% made in Italy, and great style. summer 2017, men should look out for velvet slippers embroidered with various flora and fauna. Standout heels from the women’s collection embrace the bold and juicy colours of the tropics. As well as seasonal collections, Loriblu’s creativity shines in its capsule ranges, the avant-garde designs of which have taken inspiration from art, nature and haute couture. The brand also produces exquisite bridal shoes and luxurious groom’s shoes, and for its most exclusive clients it offers made-toorder shoes. These are distinctly opulent and Italian in style and can even be personalised.
PHOTOS: COURTESY OF LORIBLU
‘Over time, our brand has carved out a distinct and unique identity,’ says Pilotti, and it is true that Loriblu has a strong customer base attracted by its signature style. For men, Loriblu offers styles that are classic but modern, while fashion-forward elements add interest. For women, the aesthetic is more individual and vibrant, but retains the classic shapes and lines of great Italian footwear. An appreciation of major trends is one element that keeps clients coming back to Loriblu time and again; its seasonal collections are always highly fashion-forward. For spring/

Loriblu produces 15,000 pairs of shoes every day, and every single one of these is crafted in the brand’s workshops in the Marche region, famous for its excellence in footwear. Le Marche is the region of the shoe, says Pilotti. ‘Our region has a history of entrepreneurs, artisans and experienced shoemakers whose roots go back decades,’ she explains. ‘We are not the only footwear district in Italy, but we are certainly the most important.’ Loriblu’s characteristic exemplary quality and attention to detail are made possible by its guarantee that all its footwear is made in Le Marche. Loriblu’s well-deserved reputation for great craftsmanship and design means the brand is in a position to collaborate with other leading firms, which has allowed for the creation of its latest big project: the Selene. This revolutionary shoe was created in Above (clockwise from top left): two looks from the Loriblu spring/summer 2017 campaign; Donna, from the brand’s capsule collection

collaboration with DreamLux, a fibre optics firm which has patented a fabric that glows in the dark, using LED lights. Classically elegant in the daytime, the Selene pump lights up in the evening, adding a truly unexpected element to any outfit. ‘Selene was the Greek goddess who personified the moon,’ explains Pilotti. ‘She appeared at sunset as the only light in the darkness, romantic and charming.’ For Pilotti, the proudest achievement so far is the international quality of Loriblu; the brand is known across the world as an ambassador of the high standards signified by the Made in Italy merchandise mark. And yet this success is all the result of something simple and traditional: a family business. Pilotti’s plan for the future is ‘above all to continue to work with passion together with my family. Our sons and daughters are increasingly present in
the company. The generational change will be necessary, but I hope that Graziano and I can still be here with the same passion of our first 40 years’

COLD COMFORT Gelato, Italy’s smooth, silky ice cream, is the ultimate warm-weather treat and Rome offers some delicious options. Katie Muxworthy recommends her favourite scoops
Temperatures soar in Rome during the summer months, and there is no better treat to cool you down than gelato – Italian ice cream is among the best in the world. Gelato has a long history; it’s said that an early version was served at the wedding feast of Italian noblewoman Catherine de Medici when she married the future King Henri II of France in 1533 – and thus introduced ice cream to the French. Made from milk, cream and sugar, gelato is generally lower in fat but higher in sugar than other styles of ice cream; slow churning incorporates less air, making gelato particularly dense, silky and soft. Rome offers a vast range, from classic vanilla, chocolate and fruit flavours to innovative contemporary options. You might take your scoop in a wafer cone or a bowl or sandwiched between sweet biscuits; taste it just as it comes or topped with fresh fruit or drizzled with a sweet syrup. But however you choose to enjoy your ice cream, you will find it hard to resist trying a different flavour of this quintessentially Italian treat on every day of your visit to Rome. globalblue.com

Unusual options include avocado, lime and white wine; allspice and chocolate; almond, apple and cinnamon; and basil, walnuts and honey – all unique and delicious. The creators of this gelateria have a simple philosophy: their customers are true connoisseurs and their expectations must be satisfied. Every flavour at San Crispino is created using the highest-quality seasonal ingredients. From classic flavours such as pistachio to more innovative and contemporary creations including whisky and liquorice varieties, there is something for every taste in this welcoming spot. For a lighter option, perhaps try a sorbet made from fresh seasonal fruits – melon, clementine and grapefruit are among the choices. Top your selection with whipped cream, if you like. Ingredients are mixed and blended to create surprising flavours such as gorgonzola with white chocolate; there are as many as 60 seasonal varieties on offer at any one time. As well as cones and dishes, the gelato is presented in ice-cream cakes, topped with fresh fruit in a decorative display. Family-run La Romana, founded in 1947 by the Zucchi family, is steeped in history. Current owners Ivano and Massimiliano Zucchi remember the queues outside their father’s first store in Rimini; while their father expertly prepared the gelato, the young brothers would help with chores – rewarded with an ice cream cone, of course. Customers still queue for gelato here, to choose between flavours such as blood orange, cherry with crunchy hazelnuts and meringue, and mascarpone with coffee and dark chocolate. For an inventive twist, try your scoop sandwiched in a brioche bun. The firm also prides itself on its environmentally friendly packaging. The quirky interior of this ice cream parlour makes it a favourite with locals and visitors alike, and a charming must-visit. A pastel mint green Volkswagen van has been adapted into a glass fronted bar, and chalkboards display the vast range of flavours on offer. The gelato here, inspired by love of simple raw ingredients, doesn’t lack flavour; try a soft scoop of the namesake pistachio ice cream. For an alternative sweet snack, perhaps opt for one of the gelateria’s traditional biscotti or crêpes, or Verde Pistacchio’s own original pistachiotopped cake, the tristacchio. 10am Enjoy breakfast at La Casetta a Monti, a cosy, inviting vine-covered café. There is something here to suit every appetite. 12pm Stroll towards Via del Corso, one of Rome’s shopping highlights, and discover men’s suiting from Gutteridge, quirky handbags from Braccialini and watches from Hour Passion. 3pm Take in the spectacular Palazzo di Montecitorio, seat of the chamber of deputies of the Italian parliament. Guided visits are only available on the first Sunday of each month; if your visit doesn’t coincide with one of these, discover the Pantheon, an architectural marvel. 7pm There is surely no better way to end your evening than drinks and dinner with a view. At La Terrazza dell’Eden restaurant on Via Ludovisi, which boasts stunning views of Rome as well as a delectable Michelin-starred menu, your wishes will be granted. This venue does not disappoint.

Founded by Wanny Di Filippo in Florence over 45 years ago, Il Bisonte has since become a name to know in the world of leather craft. Utilising traditional, vegetable-tanned cowhide to create modern bag styles with a heritage feel, the brand has developed a dedicated following. On your trip to Rome invest in a pale grey bucket bag, a deep tan backpack or a metallic bronze crossbody style. The brand’s logo, the buffalo, has become established as an international mark of the highest quality.

For spring/summer 2017, Italian fashion house Ermanno Scervino was inspired by beauty in all its forms, as can be seen in its array of ultrafeminine gowns as well as its militaryinspired suiting. The brand’s signature pleated lace is worked into a honeycomb design and applied to delicate pink, white and lemon coloured dresses, while elsewhere military-style jackets are draped over shorts and shirts in pure white. Ermanno Scervino’s full-length gowns are some of the most eye-catching of the season, as the pink creation pictured shows. To turn heads this season, this ultra-luxurious brand should be your first choice. Ermanno Scervino, Via del Babuino 97, 00187 Rome, +39 06 679 3173, ermannoscervino.it

64: Heel Appeal

Mignon: globalblue.com

И globalblue.com

globalblue.com
58: The Road To La Dolce Vita
