AUTUMN NOTES This season form, function and colour are the key principles for Norwegian fashion label Cathrine Hammel. A neutral colour palette with accents of rust red or moss green is the base for varied and textured fabrics – mohair, velvet and gabardine all have a place within the collection. This is the first season when Cathrine Hammel has used paper tissue, a lightweight fabric typically found in sportswear and which the label has incorporated into skirts, parkas and T-shirts. In contrast, sequins and traditional knits lend a heavier edge to the collection. gc Riddargatan 12, Riddargatan 12, 114 35 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 611 0837, cathrinehammel.no FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 98

t was an old style of shoe I remembered from my childhood in Sweden during the 1970s,’ says Emy Blixt, recalling a wooden-soled, clog-like sandal which was ‘very, very trendy here - there was a cool mum from my village who used to wear them.’ And thanks to Blixt, this style of footwear is once again extremely fashionable. An English teacher with no fashion experience, 10 years ago she decided she needed a change of career, and reviving what was for her a classic style seemed like a smart idea. Blixt knew she was on to something when she tracked down 500 dead-stock pairs from the back of an old shop, freighted them to Stockholm and sold them all to friends and their friends in a matter of weeks. Clearly, more would have to be made, and Hasbeens, later renamed Swedish Hasbeens, was created. ‘There’s something that’s very Swedish about the style,’ Blixt explains. ‘It fits into sustainable thinking, being made with wood and leather. But aesthetically it takes a Swedish approach too: the look is a little bit fashion and a little bit down to earth, which is actually a hard balance to strike and this gives it a wide appeal. It’s also a democratic product, not just

for the rich but for everyone, and the style has survived to become something of a standard.’ Blixt is no longer alone in pursuing this approach to footwear. In recent years Sweden has seen the launch of equally distinctive yet accessible shoe brands including Gram and Eytys. Gram’s approach has been to fill the gap between shoes and sneakers, with collections based around a basic Derby-type lace-up style with a cushioned, typically white outsole while the uppers provide variation in colour, material and pattern. Like sneakers, these are lightweight options for your feet and each style is named after its weight in grams. ‘Our roots lie in the Scandinavian design aesthetic,’ the company says, pointing to the clean lines, attention to detail and simplicity of the shoes. Eytys is a sneaker brand created by Max Schiller and Jonathan Hirschfeld, the latter having trained in fashion retail and design with Swedish company Acne Studios, which has quickly become a cult label. Like Swedish Hasbeens, Eytys has built its reputation more or less on a single product – in this case, a unisex platform sneaker with a thick rubber and cork

sole and a minimalist, deck shoe-like upper. The company says it doesn’t identify with the trend for outrageously expensive sneakers and this approach seems to be cementing the brand’s popularity. Not that building the business has been without its troubles: the cargo ship MOL Comfort, carrying its entire first collection, broke in half and sank in the middle of the Indian Ocean (thankfully no lives were lost – only stock).

Neither has Swedish Hasbeens’ journey been completely straightforward. In 2011 Swedish fashion retail giant H&M placed a dream order with the company (at the time still called Hasbeens) which would put them firmly on the fashion map. But before finalising its request for 50,000 pairs H&M insisted that the shoemaker’s name had a firm legal footing. This meant buying the name Hasbeen from another organisation (owned by a former Disneyland employee) and, to drive home the brand’s origin, ‘Swedish’ was added to the name. This has paid off, as the shoes are now sold in 400 stores in 20 countries; it has two of its own stores in Stockholm and plans to open in London and New York. ‘There are more and more footwear brands coming out of Sweden now, and I think they all benefit from finding that non-extreme middle ground that is so popular here,’ says Blixt. ‘We don’t want anything too ‘nice’, but we don’t want anything too ugly either and the advantage is that more and more people around the world are attracted to that approach.’

WEATHER READY There’s no need to compromise on style when out in the city this season. Hannah Lewis reveals the Swedish brands making practical gear you’ll be proud to wear

I

n 1960, Åke Nordin founded Fjällräven from his basement in the Swedish town of Örnsköldsvik. Nordin was a practical man. He liked to trek, and he liked to be comfortable while doing so, but he could never find exactly the right equipment. Nordin therefore decided to make his own outdoors gear and, after borrowing his mother’s sewing machine, began with lightweight jackets and framed backpacks. Word soon spread among other keen walkers and hikers, marking the start of the Fjällräven brand. Fjällräven’s most famous creation, the 117

126

Kånken backpack, was created in 1978 for schoolchildren, being durable, large enough to hold all the essentials without causing back problems and featuring a distinctive top handle for ease of carrying between lessons. Ask anyone in Sweden and it’s likely they’ll recall fond memories of their own Kånken. But while the backpack has remained popular over the decades for its undeniable functionality, the last five years have seen the design capture the hearts of a different audience. If you’re in any of the world’s trendiest neighbourhoods – east Berlin, Brooklyn, Shoreditch or SoFo – the Previous page: Peak Performance’s 30th anniversary autumn/ winter 2016/17 collection

chances are you’ll spot a Kånken before long. Far from being reserved for the schoolyard, this is now a must-have fashion item. Swedish fashion publication Hemma Magazine describes the Kånken as ‘the ultimate in utilitarian cool’. Tired of heavy branding and passing trends, modern consumers want items which are beautiful, functional and made to last. They’re also looking for authenticity and many Swedish labels, including Fjällräven, also meet this need. At Fjällräven, authenticity lies to a large extent in its commitments to simplicity and sustainability. This year sees the launch of two new Kånken models. Re-Kånken is made from one single yarn created from recycled plastic bottles, produced using eco-friendly practices and is completely recyclable at the end of its (impressively long) life. Meanwhile, the Kånken No 2 Black edition is an all-black bag made from a heavy-duty version of Fjällräven’s signature G-1000 fabric. While the traditional Kånken is known for its bright colours, this new model provides a more understated option, with leather detailing adding to the smart, luxurious aesthetic. These small changes are perfectly in line with the company’s ethos and they

also extend the utilitarian vibe which has won Kånken so many fans. Fjällräven is not the only brand making practical clothing cool. Stutterheim may only have been founded in 2010, but with over 800 retailers worldwide it is one of Sweden’s most promising clothing labels. And at its core? Raincoats. Of course, it doesn’t deal in just any type of raincoat, but specialises in beautiful, well-cut creations handmade in Sweden. Inspired by the coat worn by founder Alexander Stutterheim’s grandfather in the 1960s, the company has taken the basic raincoat, which is charged with Swedish heritage, and reimagined it for a contemporary, international audience. Stutterheim’s success comes not from ever-changing styles or by embracing trends but from its central values of excellence and simplicity – and at its heart is a desire to simply protect people from bad weather wherever they are, according to head of design Patric Wallertz. Another Swedish brand conceived as a practical solution to a need is Peak Performance, which was founded by three keen

Stutterheim raincoats are sold by over 800 retailers worldwide skiers who wanted high-quality skiwear that didn’t compromise on style. They began to make their own, and their cool but never flashy aesthetic struck a chord with sports enthusiasts the world over. Having expanded into clothing for almost any outdoor activity – from golf and skiing to mountaineering – Peak Performance is today one of the world’s most recognisable specialists in the field. And still the aim remains the same: to allow customers to look stylish, not ostentatious, in clothing whose functionality isn’t compromised. A similar concept drives J Lindeberg. Describing itself as having ‘one foot in the sports world and one in the fashion world’ the brand produces clothing for skiing and golf as well as activewear, fashion clothing and more.

It was one of the first companies to bring a fashion edge to high-performance sportswear, and in the 20 years since its founding it has continued to push the boundaries from both angles – offering timeless and fashionforward apparel that incorporates advanced developments in performance-wear technology. ‘At J Lindeberg we do not compromise on style in sport or fashion wear,’ says Ali Razzaghi, the brand’s head of design for golf and activewear. According to J Lindeberg, attention to style must be apparent in its sportswear, and attention to functionality must be seen in its fashion collections. As with Fjällräven, Stutterheim and Peak Performance, form and function go hand in hand. With consumers increasingly looking for clothes that last and which can adapt to our ever-busier lifestyles, it’s no surprise that Sweden’s labels – who lead the way in this arena – are developing such strong reputations. Once again, the nation’s designers find themselves at the forefront of an emerging trend. or those looking for Sweden’s distinctive directional cuts and sleek functionality, Jakobsbergsgatan is a particularly rewarding destination. The road, formerly a low-key part of the city’s exclusive Bibliotekstan shopping district, is now attracting a growing line-up of hot Swedish labels. Up-andcoming brands, from Our Legacy and Nudie Jeans to Elvine and Sandqvist, are making Jakobsbergsgatan their home. The names congregating along the mid-section of the street represent the new generation of Swedish talent which is breaking ground internationally, following in the footsteps of Acne Studios, Whyred, Anna Holtblad and Filippa K. They’re confident and ultra modern yet maintain a quiet sensibility. Cuts are clean and fuss free, but this is a distinctive kind of minimalism, one which clicks with consumers and inspires designers from other parts of the world who are seeking to emulate the Scandinavian look. on that of this Nordic country, with a few even going so far as to give their brands a Swedishsounding name – UK denim purveyor Wåven being one example. Aside from their knack for elevating the urban everyday look into something far more compelling, Swedish designers typically price their wares at the more accessible end of luxury. This formula has paid off in Sweden and beyond: Sandqvist’s distinctive, muchcopied canvas and leather-detail backpacks, which retail at €120 on average, are slung across almost as many shoulders in London as in the label’s native land (incidentally, Sandqvist opened its first UK store in Soho in spring 2016). Back on home turf, in what is now Sandqvist’s second Stockholm store, the team explains the magnetism of Jakobsbergsgatan. ‘One of the reasons why we chose to open a store on the street is that we liked the idea of

sharing it with so many fellow Swedish labels,’ explains Sebastian Westin, co-founder of Sandqvist. ‘The street has a really nice indie feel about it, yet its central location makes it commercially viable. It also offers a bit of breathing space as it’s tucked away from the area’s main street, Biblioteksgatan. The fact that you’ll find all the global luxury brands nearby adds to the appeal of Jakobsbergsgatan, bringing an exciting mix of people and cultures to the area.’ Streetwear label Elvine, the brainchild of former street art star Daniel Mänd, joined the Jakobsbergsgatan community with its first store in 2015. Designed by reputed Swedish design studio OkiDoki, the distinctive space carries the full Elvine collection for men and women, including a healthy selection of outerwear – a category in which Elvine excels. So what makes Jakobsbergsgatan a good fit for the Gothenburg-based brand? ‘We’re actually Above (both): Elvine store on Jakobsbersgatan designed by OkiDoki

It’s smart that an area in the heart of the city has been given to local designers better known in cities abroad than we are in Stockholm, so we wanted to open a store right in the thick of it so that nobody would miss us,’ explains Mänd, who now serves as the brand’s creative director. ‘The vibe of the street is friendly and relaxed; you won’t find the really exclusive stores here and this suits us perfectly since we’re a democratic brand offering street fashion at fairly moderate prices.’ In the past, before Bibliotekstan morphed into the style haven that is it is today, most Above: Jakobsbergsgatan

young designers would have opted to open stores on the trendy island of Södermalm, where the offbeat-cool neighbourhood of SoFo (South of Folkungagatan) is the ultimate draw. But as Mänd notes, ‘old clichés’ about the different areas of Stockholm are loosening up, proving that indie fashion can thrive in urban centres. It’s both admirable and smart of Stockholm’s planners to have dedicated an area in the heart of the city to local designers. While many major international shopping areas are populated by the same big names, Jakobsbergsgatan has become a destination for fashion mavens. This one street offers a wealth of options when it comes to exploring the phenomenon of local labels which is being described as ‘the Swedish fashion miracle’. Here’s hoping that many more cities around the world will follow Stockholm’s lead by giving much-needed centrally located retail space to home-grown talent

a more affordable diffusion line, Back. A highend collection Ann-Sofie Back Atelje followed in 2011 – and there has been a bit of a surprise along the way. ‘Back has now evolved into a proper mainline label, with prices ranging from €60-€3,000,’ she explains. Rather than being a conceptual label, Back’s style ‘slowly evolves’. ‘With Back, I pick and develop ideas from previous collections. The focus is on the potential wearer and this is an objective range of clothing.’

74 | F E AT U R E S

It’s interesting to note that according to the designer, wearability is a nebulous concept. ‘I think for fashion to be relevant it has to be wearable but then what that is is very different to different people,’ she says. ‘I get really tired looking at student shows and seeing great research on the catwalk, but these aren’t really clothes. You can see how easy it would be to turn them into something wearable and, in Above: Back autumn/winter 2016/17

In contrast to the luxurious Ann-Sofie Back Atelje garments, the Back collection provides more wearable option. my mind, cleverer, but they just don’t know how. But of course I was the same, for a very long time.’ Now adept at creating clothing with her own personal brand of wearability for Back, the designer is also the creative director of the affordable Swedish denim line Cheap Monday. When asked if this high street fashion line offers something different to her own brand, the designer acknowledges that the gulf between luxury and affordable fashion is shrinking: ‘I think the line between high end and high street keeps getting more and more blurred so there’s no longer such a big gap in how you work.’ At Cheap Monday she works with a ‘big team of designers and art directors’ and her role is ‘more like an editor’, as she doesn’t produce designs for the label. ‘I really love

that collaboration…most of the time.’ Back’s refreshing honesty sets her apart from her less candid peers and, for her, having a sense of humour is just as important on the catwalk as off it. ‘I’m a child of the 1970s and have a huge problem with taking clothes and fashion completely seriously,’ Back admits. ‘I have this little voice in my head that keeps telling me how superficial and stupid it all is.

to the wearer and instill respect. She passed away two years ago and travelling was her favourite pastime. We had a complicated relationship but the store is a kind of homage to her; I never mourned her passing but I have wanted to.’ In the store, there are racks made from swimming pool ladders and there’s even a gigantic lilo on one of the walls. Even in something as public facing as her store, Back is not afraid to bare her soul. This, combined with her refreshingly approachable take on fashion, makes her stand out

People who work in fashion often have very big egos combined with a low self-esteem so there are a lot of very scared people that you have to deal with and I just have to take the edge off that to cope.’ The autumn/winter 2016/17 Back collection is inspired by cars and how people sit in them, and includes humorous touches such as exaggerated, voluminous knees on trousers and elbow patches which protrude from the sleeves of sportswear-inspired tops. As well as the mystery and freedom of ‘just taking off’ on a road trip, another theme in the latest collection is androgyny, something Back returns to time and again. ‘I, like a lot of designers, am drawn to contrasts,’ she explains. ‘Menswear is less eager to please and was traditionally designed to give confidence Above (from top): the Back store in Sodermalm; Back autumn/winter 2016/17

ON THE RISE Stockholm’s artisan bakers are creating expertly made loaves and tempting pastries. Katie Muxworthy samples some of the best

The choice of café’s, delis and restaurants in the Swedish capital is already very impressive, and now visitors can add a raft of artisan bakeries to their must-visit list while in the city. Sweden is famous for its mid-morning fika breaks, when coffee and baked treats are enjoyed in a tradition which dates back to the 18th century. Typical fika snacks include kanelbulle (cinnamon rolls) and saffransbulle – a saffron-flavoured bun. Many of Stockholm’s artisan bakeries also have cafés or small seating areas in which to enjoy your fika break, and some also serve breakfast and lunch. If visiting at Christmas, look out for seasonal specialities, such as pepparkakor – spiced biscuits traditionally made with ginger, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. The city’s leading artisan bakers take the quality and provenance of ingredients seriously and are using traditional methods to produce sourdough and rye breads, as well as making use of stone ovens. Take time to seek out one of the new breed of bakers while in Stockholm, whether for a take-away snack, a fika break, or during your lunch stop. globalblue.com

50: Sole Traders

Бликст globalblue.com

66: The Road Ahead

Peak Performance,

globalblue.com

72: Back Up Front

112: When You Shop The World, Shop Tax Free

PHOTOS (ALL): INGEMAR LINDEWALL

72: Back Up Front Back成名记 Ann-Sofe Back潜心打造魅力时装,独具个人 气质,最近更在斯德哥尔摩新开设了一家旗舰 店。

Back。
