candinavians are known for a clean and unfussy sense of style, and this is as true when it comes to jewellery design as it is with home decor and ready-to-wear fashion. The region’s leading designers favour minimalist shapes and simple pieces, often inspired by nature and natural forms, that subtly show off fine metals and precious stones. Sterling silver is a much-loved material, with the best Danish and Swedish labels proving that – with the right design – this metal can be just as covetable as its golden cousin. When it comes to beautiful silver jewellery, Georg Jensen is a world leader in the field. Above: Georg Jensen Offspring collection

Founded in Copenhagen in 1904, the brand is known for minimalist, sculptural jewellery inspired by natural forms. This season, look out for the Offspring collection, created in collaboration with contemporary designer Jacqueline Rabun. The central motif of the collection is an egg-shaped loop, which Rabun chose as a symbol of birth. The range comprises bracelets, necklaces, rings and earrings crafted from sterling silver, rose gold or a combination of the two. In many pieces, two or more of the elegant ovals overlap and intertwine; for Rabun, this is a representation of familial ties. ‘The Offspring collection was

Thought, talent and craftsmanship define Scandinavian sterling silver jewellery born from my desire to honour the relationship between mother and child,’ she explains. ‘The connection between the small and larger eggs represents unconditional love and the importance of one’s heritage and roots.’ Jacqueline Rabun is known for her ability to convey emotion through her designs, one factor that makes her a perfect collaborator for Georg Jensen. Another is her ability to create highly contemporary pieces with a timeless feel. As with all Georg Jensen jewellery, the Offspring collection is classic enough to be passed down the generations, and also fluid and adaptable enough to meld with different

personal styles. ‘Jewellery allows one to express individuality,’ says Rabun. ‘The natural shapes and curves of the body are essential to everything I design; it is important that each piece complements the human form and becomes an extension of the body and spirit of the wearer.’ Efva Attling is another designer known for her love of fine silver. Her designs are soft and sculptural, with a minimalist feel that belies a deeply emotive and intellectual design process. ‘Beauty with a thought’ is how she describes her approach, and each collection has a strong theme. Highlights for autumn/winter include

the Navette collection, which features pointed bowl shapes stacked upon each other, designed to catch and reflect the light in mesmerising ways; and the Nature’s Unique range, in which Attling juxtaposes straight lines with natural pearls to highlight the unique nature of each one. Another key design to look out for is the Native necklace which, unusually for Attling, is a standalone piece. Inspired by the craftsmanship of the Sami people, who are native to the Nordic region, the necklace is made by hand and features five irregular teardrop shapes that catch the light beautifully. Exclusively available in sterling silver, these three ranges show just what a talented designer such as Attling can do with the metal.

Danish jeweller Pandora knows the power of accessible everyday luxury and this is reflected in its silver pieces, which offer a wide range of models and styles to suit every taste and budget. Pandora allows clients to build their own jewellery and gives them the option of adding new elements over time – particularly in its signature charm bracelets. These are pieces made to be worn and loved every day, and each element is chosen by you, representing a mood or a memory that is all your own. Whether you’re looking to build upon an existing Pandora piece, or discovering the brand for the first time, be sure to seek out the new Grains of Life collection. The central motif is a beautifully detailed grain of wheat,

To pick up a new silver piece, there is nowhere better than Scandinavia symbolising nature’s bounty and harvest as well as the passage of time. Inspired by the opulence and majesty of the Renaissance, the Regal Tales line is also well worth discovering. A ring shaped like a crown and decorated with sparkling stones is a particular highlight. Since its launch a decade ago, Drakenberg Sjölin has built a strong reputation for thoughtful, minimal and distinctly Nordic jewellery inspired by the natural world. Founders Andrea Drakenberg and Ellen Sjölin interpret these inspirations in highly creative ways. The Rocky Shore collection, for example features rounded discs of gold or silver, some textured and some smooth, the contrast representing the smoothing of rocks over time as the sea washes over them. Real leaves are

pressed into silver, imprinting their unique patterns onto jewellery in a range called, simply, Leaf. This season’s standout pieces focus on precious stones. The Moon collection features large spherical stones in smoky grey and milky white. The Karma collection is perhaps the brand’s most colourful to date, featuring clusters of stones in varying colours, from white and pearlescent tones to pops of pink and blue as well as earthy greys and browns. Each colour looks perfectly at home against Drakenberg Sjölin’s much-loved sterling silver. With such thought, talent and craftsmanship going into sterling silver jewellery, there couldn’t be a better place than Scandinavia to pick up a new piece

inimalism with impact, sleek silhouettes and fundamental functionality are components of Swedish style that have dominated the fashion world for several seasons. H&M, or Hennes & Mauritz as it’s formally known, one of Sweden’s biggest brands and one of the world’s largest clothing manufacturers, is one of the key players. H&M began as a womenswear store in Sweden in 1947. Today, as well as the eponymous original label, the group has eight other brands, each with unique identities and differing target markets, united in an aim to create high-quality, sustainable fashion at attainable prices.

In 2018 the group announced two new brands, Afound and Nyden. Two Afound stores opened in Sweden in June, one on Stockholm’s busy Drottninggatan and one in Malmö, and the brand launched online at the same time. Unlike any other H&M brand, Afound acts as a marketplace, offering discounted men’s and women’s clothing and accessories from a variety of designers, spanning high-end to high street and including names such as Saint Laurent, Gucci and Stella McCartney. Nyden is another departure from H&M’s existing brands. Rather than adhering to fashion-week schedules or spring/summer

and autumn/winter seasons, garments designed by a collective of creatives will be released through a series of drops and events, in collaboration with prominent young members of the fashion and music industries. It will be sold exclusively online and at pop-up stores, capturing the future of fashion for the Millennial market. Even without these two newest projects, the last few years have been some of the most successful in the history of the group. Arket, its lifestyle brand for men, women, children and the home, has opened nine stores and launched in 18 online markets since it was announced in 2017. Arket’s success has been largely down to excellent products that will stand the test of time, as well as its forward-thinking attitudes towards fashion and lifestyle – introducing, for example, the New Nordic Food Manifesto to its in-house cafés. Womenswear brand & Other Stories, which opened in 2013, now has over 60 stores worldwide, operates online in 15 markets and has collaborated with some of the most celebrated fashion brands, stylists and influencers in the world. Sustainability is at the core of the H&M group’s values. With the H&M brand’s Above (from top): the café in Arket’s Stockholm store; Gemini collection by & Other Stories x House of Hackney

Conscious Exclusive range, and organic or premium options available at both Weekday and & Other Stories, customers can find pieces that suit their lifestyle choices as well as their style. & Other Stories started an in-house recycling programme for its beauty collection when it launched, and today it offers the same for textiles in most of its flagship stores. Arket too follows this ethos. Collections transcend fast fashion, focusing on silhouettes and functionality, with subtle nods to trends via fabric choices, colourways and fine details. The Transparency Index, which monitors issues such as traceability and working conditions, places the H&M group among the world’s top five brands. The group is committed to achieving a cyclical production Above: & Other Stories x House of Hackney

model, which aims to achieve zero waste. By 2030, it intends to use only recycled or sustainably sourced materials, to use renewable energy for its own operations and to offer garment recycling services in stores. H&M’s global success also lies in partnerships. For over 10 years, the H&M label has launched a highly anticipated annual collaboration with a major luxury designer – the affordable collections, known for selling out in just minutes, have included partnerships with Balmain, Erdem, Jimmy Choo, Marni and, most recently, Moschino. & Other Stories works with fashion icons, designers, musicians and influencers each season; collaborative projects – or ‘stories’ – so far have been made with British homeware brand

House of Hackney, fashion icon Iris Apfel, British designer Sadie Williams, influencer Patricia Manfield and singer Lykke Li. Arket’s collections are complemented in store by excellent pieces from other brands such as Ace & Tate eyewear, footwear by Adidas, Birkenstock, Clarks and Nike, and books published by Phaidon and Penguin. What H&M does so well is design for many style genres; each brand has a clear identity so customers can trust their goto H&M brand to deliver a specific piece. Weekday and Cheap Monday specialise in denim; Monki and Nyden are influenced by youth culture. Aimed at a slightly older market, Cos designs more streamlined sartorial pieces with a highly modern design

edge. The & Other Stories customer is a woman who loves fashion and will make each piece her own. As well as clothing, & Other Stories offers stationery, leather accessories and jewellery, and has an extensive beauty line. The brand has cemented lifestyle into its collections: the pieces tell a story and its collaborative projects aim to inspire. Ultimately, the accomplishments and international success of the H&M group can be credited to its ability to anticipate the future. The brand’s designs cater to a variety of styles and all age groups, at inclusive price points. In an ever-developing digital world, Hennes & Mauritz delivers a forward-thinking attitude towards sustainable fashion retail, without compromising on quality or style

TABLE TALK Chefs in Stockholm are going back to the roots of Nordic cooking, to magical effect – as Lucinda Turner discovers

Diners in Stockholm are spoiled for choice. From lavish sushi restaurants to pop-up food markets, the choice seems endless. But where do you go to get a true taste of Sweden? Acknowledged for years as one of the most gastronomically experimental cities on the planet, the Swedish capital is experiencing a renaissance of traditional Nordic cooking. However, in Stockholm, this is far from simply putting a pickled herring on a plate. The new wave of Nordic cuisine is refined and elegant, and accords as much respect to modern innovation as it does to the Scandinavian heritage that originally inspired the dishes. Local produce, often organic, alongside classic flavours combined with inventive techniques and contemporary presentation means these restaurants offer dishes that are certainly worth discovering. globalblue.com

OAXEN KROG Founded on Oaxen island 21 years ago, the Oaxen Krog and Oaxen Slip restaurants have since relocated to Djurgården island in central Stockholm, but have remembered the lessons learned from their rural roots –the Oaxen Farm allotment provides many of the ingredients for the casual Oaxen Slip brasserie, as well as for Oaxen Krog’s refined fine dining menu. The team at Oaxen champion sustainability and everything from the repurposed boatyard which houses the restaurants to the exclusively European wines on the wine list has been selected with the environment in mind. On the Oaxen Krog menu, the garden’s seasonal output is paramount, so an everchanging offering of elegantly presented Swedish produce is waiting to be enjoyed. VOLT Opened in 2010, Volt champions the New Nordic movement in Stockholm. Founded by four friends, the restaurant is tucked away in the Östermalm area of the city and, although it can be difficult to find, the Michelin star that it was awarded in 2015 means it is worth searching for. Each recipe aims to use old techniques achieved with modern equipment, and the key components are salt and acidity, both mainstays of Nordic cuisine. The menu is concise and changes to reflect seasonal produce; the tasting option offers four to six courses. While the menu may seem a little sparse, co-founder Johan Bengtsson says there is a good reason for this: ‘That’s how we like it, not to describe it all in the text, we let the food talk.’ Volt, Kommendörsgatan 16, 114 48 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 662 3400, restaurangvolt.se globalblue.com

GASTROLOGIK Consistently cited on lists of the best restaurants in the world, Michelin-starred Gastrologik is a culinary destination. The attention that founders Anton Bjuhr and Jacob Holmström pay to their ingredients is almost obsessive. They make daily visits to suppliers and choose each ingredient themselves, ensuring they only put the cream of the crop on their customers’ plates. They have said that the yellow onion is as valuable as the truffle, meaning that the stars of the show in some of Gastrologik’s dishes are sometimes less than conventional. The

menu changes daily, as only the freshest and most delicious produce is used. The two founders are not making food for the sake of a pretty plate, although the dishes here are beautifully presented – garnishes include colourful scatterings of edible flowers and pine needles, while the rustic-style tableware also adds to the visual appeal. The clue about the quality on offer is clearly evident in the restaurant’s name and wide acclaim. Gastrologik, Artillerigatan 14, 114 51 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 662 3060, gastrologik.se

To discover the more homely side of New Nordic cooking, head to Kagges. This small restaurant celebrated its first anniversary this year and school friends Kalle Lindborg and Douglas ‘Dogge’ Tjärnhammar-Alm rely heavily on their Swedish countryside upbringings to inspire the menu. The 10-dish menu includes a variety of meat, fish and vegetarian options, all of which take their influence from traditional Swedish recipes. Wild herbs, mushrooms, game and locally caught fish mean that the food captures the charm of the Swedish countryside, while the modern presentation positions the restaurant firmly in the present day. The atmosphere is cosy, unpretentious and relaxed; the extensive wine list and hearty cuisine will make you want to stay all night and the frequently updated menu will ensure you return again and again. After a five-year renovation, the long-awaited reopening of Sweden’s Nationalmuseum in Blasieholmen takes place in October 2018. Modern features such as climate control have been fitted to conserve the artworks, and more natural light has been integrated to showcase the exhibits. The galleries will exhibit art on both large scales and small, the museum’s two courtyards have been reworked into public spaces and its restaurant offers a bakery as well as typical Swedish dishes. The first exhibition in the new space is a retrospective of American artist John Singer Sargent, bringing many of his famous paintings to Scandinavia for the first time. FRANTZÉN In February 2018 Frantzén achieved something that sets it apart from other Swedish restaurants, becoming the first in the country to receive three Michelin stars. First opened a decade ago, it reopened in August 2017 at its current larger location on Stockholm’s Klara Norra Kyrkogata in 2017. With an ever-changing menu offering classic Nordic cuisine with a Japanese-inspired twist, it’s a must-visit for any food lover visiting the city. If you’re seeking modern Scandinavian jewellery, head to Maria Nilsdotter, a popular Swedish goldsmith whose flagship store can be found on Sturegatan. After graduating from London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins arts college in 2007, Nilsdotter made her name by creating timeless pieces that reference Swedish folklore, nature and mythology. The store offers a unique experience, with dark wood panelling and original tiled flooring decorated with animal-themed sculptures and artwork. For distinctive designs, fine craftsmanship and an authentic souvenir of Stockholm, it’s a boutique not to be missed. РУССКИЙ ПЕРЕВОД 40: THE SUBTLETY OF SILVER НЕЖНОСТЬ СЕРЕБРА

Pandora Regal Tales
