FIT FOR A KING Svenskt Tenn celebrates its 95th anniversary in 2019. Founded in 1924, the Swedish interior design brand is known for its colourfully patterned designs across textiles, wallpaper, homeware, furniture and more, which have delighted many, including royalty – the brand has held the prestigious title of official purveyor to the king of Sweden since 1928. Now owned by the Kjell and Märta Beijer Foundation, the brand not only helps fund scientific research but also invests in Swedish handcraft. In light of the anniversary, a visit to the store and tea room in Stockholm is highly recommended. grc Svenskt Tenn, Strandvägen 5, 114 51 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 670 1600, svenskttenn.se FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 42
ONE TO WATCH BLUE BILLIE The idea behind Blue Billie is a simple one: Daniela Upmark wanted jewellery that was easy to wear, so when she founded the brand in 2015 it was based around the playful idea of mixing and matching. The Swedish brand’s chains and charms can be worn alone or combined in endless variations, so that each wearer can create their own personal look. Motifs include palm trees, shells and letters. Besides chains and charms, Blue Billie also creates earrings, necklaces and rings. grc Mood Details, Mood Stockholm, Regeringsgatan 48/ Norrlandsgatan 13, 111 44 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 5009 7120,

neakers, trainers, creps, kicks, runners: there are many ways to refer to them, and many global brands that have built reputations around them. Sneakers are wonderfully flexible – they can be worn with almost any outfit, dressed up or dressed down. Sublimely unbiased, sneakers can also be worn universally: by men and women, young and old, celebrities, sports stars, and everyone else, as demonstrated by a 2019 New Balance advertisement that simply showed an image of the brand’s 990 sneakers with the tagline ‘Worn by supermodels in London and dads in Ohio’. Going way beyond their sporting roots, trainers have become part of the street-style uniform. Just as Sweden’s fashion designers command attention for their understated looks, the country’s sneaker brands have become known for their subtle style. Swedish design has a long-standing reputation for the cutting edge, the highest quality and the utmost functionality. Marie Nilsson Peterzén, creative director of the Vagabond footwear brand, says that ‘Scandinavian design in general is appreciated because of its timeless yet forward-leaning approach to the world of fashion.’ Contemporary designers from the Nordic region, in all fields from furniture to fashion, tend to be modern in their practices: conscious of the environment, keen to invest in local production and promote gender equality (Sweden ranked third on the World Economic Forum’s 2018 list of most genderequal countries). In an interview with Business of Fashion, Eytys founder Max Schiller says that ‘there’s no reason why clothing or sneakers should be gender-specific.’ This future-focused perspective means it’s no surprise that Swedish sneaker brands are making waves within the industry for their fashion-forward footwear. Sweden is one of the world’s most eco-friendly nations, and as a result, many customers seek higher sustainability standards from Swedish brands than they might expect from large-scale American, Asian or European footwear labels. ‘Our wearers trust us to know about quality and to support a sustainable way of life,’ says Nilsson Peterzén. Vagabond has shown great commitment to conscious Above: Eytys autumn/winter 2019/20

production, introducing leather tanned without chrome to prevent allergies and using recycled polyester and cotton certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard. By 2030, it aims to reduce its goods transportation CO2 emissions by 50%. For the autumn/winter 2019/20 sneaker element of its extensive footwear range, Vagabond is delving into its archives to develop the Sprint 2.0, a trainer with a minimalist look and chunky outsole. Initially introduced in the late 90s, it has become a Vagabond signature. Eytys (pronounced 80s, the multiple ys inspired by the decade that gave us Generation Y) was founded by school friends Jonathan Hirschfeld and Max Schiller, who between them combine experience from business school and acclaimed Swedish fashion brand Acne Studios. They started their label with just one shoe: the Mother, a simple unisex platform sneaker. ‘There’s a way of power dressing and Above: Vagabond Lexy trainers
it’s not masculine or feminine. Wearing bold proportions gives you a certain confidence, like the Mother with its thick white sole,’ Schiller told Business of Fashion. Eytys launched in 2013 with just 25 stockists. By the following year it had 60: an elite list that included Dover Street Market, Colette, and LN-CC. It now has a long list of international retailers, two stores in prestigious Stockholm and London districts, and a readyto-wear collection. The hype around Eytys increased dramatically on the sneakerhead and skateboarder streetwear scene with the Angel, a chunky shoe-cum-sneaker with a deep platform, inspired by 90s trail shoes. This hiking-boot style distils Stockholm’s utilitarian approach to the need for functionality in fashion. Not all Swedish sneaker brands are about the forever shoe, however. Axel Arigato was launched in 2014, into a transient, digital-

I’M NOT JUST A REGULAR MALL. T H E Y C A L L M E “ T H E M A L L .” I’ve been “The Mall” in Stockholm city for quite some time now. But lately, there’s been some changes at my place. I’ve actually had a total makeover. I’ve now expanded with new flagship stores like Kicks (Sweden’s makeup-mecca), along side my old friends such as Hollister and Nike still by my side. friendly world, with an ambitious aim to release a different style each week. Using social media and digital marketing to scope demands, the brand has accumulated a following of close to 500,000 on Instagram, as of August 2019, and acquired stockists in over 100 countries around the world during its first year, according to creative director Max Svärdh. Word-of-mouth and a see-now-buy-now model have led to huge success for this sneaker brand that always looks to the future. Svärdh describes the brand as luxurious yet attainable, influenced by the culture of streetwear without focusing on logos. In an interview with Highsnobiety he describes Axel Arigato as a brand to look for if you’re seeking something more conceptual and says the label sets out to address how ‘kids think and how they want to consume fashion today. Which is also visible in the wide range of styles in the sneakers that we offer. I like to think of Axel Arigato as a destination for people to shop new ideas.’
In an industry that runs on hype, trainers gain must-have status and generate excitement through limited drops, custom features and luxury collaborations. While sneakerheads can certainly get on board with on-trend lines such as Eytys’ Angel and Axel Arigato’s weekly drops, Swedish labels in general are less focused on trends, and more on effortless, timeless style and quality. Swedish design is based around the philosophy that less is more and that style can come with substance. So if you are seeking sneakers that promise longevity and are crafted sustainably with a fashion-focused aesthetic, Swedish brands are the ones to look out for

OLE LYNGGAARD A royal warrant signifies the highest quality and Danish jeweller Ole Lynggaard’s long-established status as purveyor to the Danish court underlines the brand’s luxury credentials. Founded by the eponymous designer in 1963, the label is known for stunning creations that are frequently inspired by nature. Its latest launch, the Cranes collection, takes the form of the graceful bird that’s often considered a symbol of good luck, beauty and love. Featuring three rings, a brooch and a captivating pair of earrings in 18-carat yellow and white gold, diamonds and cabochon rubies, the collection captures the essence of this ethereal creature. At the distinguished age of 83, founder Ole Lynggaard proves that creativity never gets old. sm Global Blue Retailer

GASTROLOGIK Jacob Holmström and Anton Bjuhr founded Gastrologik, a fine-dining restaurant with a flexible menu that uses only ingredients local to Sweden, in 2011. The offering has evolved somewhat since then, with the owners occasionally incorporating seafood from Norway and Denmark, but the restaurant remains dedicated to eco-conscious eating, relying upon pickles and preserves, and a root cellar in winter when fresh ingredients aren’t available. This charming, intimate restaurant was recently awarded its second Michelin star, so there’s never been a better time to visit. And if you can’t get a table, try Speceriet next door – the sister restaurant offers a casual alternative to Gastrologik’s high-end cuisine. sm Gastrologik, Artillerigatan 14, 114 51 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 662 3060, gastrologik.se

Take the 20-minute drive out of the city centre to visit Artipelag, a museum, art and events space on Värmdö in the Stockholm archipelago. The venue currently welcomes Inside Out Outside In, an exhibition of pieces from the Fornasetti brand and the works of founder Piero Fornasetti and his son Barnaba (pictured), who now runs the label. Featuring the porcelain wall plates and decorated furniture for which the Italian brand is famous, the exhibition, which runs until 26 January 2020, also reveals Piero Fornasetti’s lesser-known works, including paintings, drawings and installations. Founded in the 1950s, Fornasetti has become a cult design label, and this exhibition highlights the scope of the founder’s talents, helping to ensure that his beautiful legacy lives on. sm Artipelag, Artipelagstigen 1, 134 40 Gustavsberg, +46 (0)8 5701 3000, artipelag.se

EMMA S The latest launch from Swedish skincare specialist Emma S is Treatment Niacinamide Formula, which is designed to create a glowing complexion by balancing skin tone and minimising pores. Containing salicylic and hyaluronic acid, this new addition to the Emma S range should be worn under serum and moisturiser and can be applied once or twice a day. The brand’s namesake and founder, Emma Wiklund, is a former model who launched her career in the pre-Photoshop era of the 90s, when impeccable skin was essential for her job. After working closely with a French dermatologist in her modelling days to develop a skincare routine that helped minimise breakouts, Wiklund wanted to create a pharmacy-like skincare range based on the knowledge she has gathered over the years. With award-winning products and fans worldwide, Emma S has certainly hit on a winning formula. sm Åhléns City, Klarabergsgatan 50, 111 21 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 676 6000, emmas.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 39

РУССКИЙ ПЕРЕВОД 28: GET YOUR KICKS ЗОВ УЛИЦ
