PEARL QUEEN Swedish designer Felicia Swartling takes an unusual approach to creating jewellery. She founded her brand Feswa after studying jewellery design at the renowned Central Saint Martins college in London. Swartling pays close attention to details and through her designs reveals each piece of jewellery’s natural beauty. A conversation piece when being worn, every item is also designed to be admired while it is not being worn; placed on a small plinth, her jewellery takes on a sculptural quality. Biome collection: the images above show the ring from three different views, and highlight the ring’s details. Made from silver with an aged look the ring also features gold plating and a fresh-water pearl in the middle, resembling an open flower or shell. The dark, monochromatic and raw but glamorous style is characteristic of Feswa – a label which is looking to challenge the standard preconceptions about jewellery. fm Feswa Kläm ring, SEK 4,387, Jus Design, Brunnsgatan 7, 111 38 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 206777, feswa.se FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 97

MODERN CLASSIC While on a backpacking trip, Filip Tysander met British traveller Daniel Wellington. Tysander was inspired by the man’s life story as well as his style, which he expressed through details, such as wearing his luxury watch with a woven nylon strap based on a British military design. In 2009, Tysander established his own watch brand, and named it Daniel Welllington. For the spring/summer 2016 season, the company has introduced the Classic Reading watch (SEK 1,495): the simple and elegant design is part of the Daniel Wellington Classic collection and comes with a rose gold or silver case. th Åhléns City, Klarabergsgatan 50, 111 21 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 676 6000, danielwellington.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 98

RIGHT ON TIME For watches featuring innovative design and technical excellence, turn to Sweden’s experts, says Hannah Lewis

W

hen you think of Swedish watches, minimalism might be the first trait that comes to mind. From Triwa’s sleek shapes and subtle details to TID Watches’ simple faces and pared-back interchangeable straps, many of the leading brands have made their names by turning to the most recognisable of Scandinavian styles: minimalist

elegance. But take another look and a wealth of watchmakers will prove that there’s more to Swedish style than this one aesthetic. Sjöö Sandström is the brand for anyone looking for luxury with a touch of the classic. The team is inspired by Swedish design, while the advanced mechanisms and traditionalwith-an-edge aesthetic are reminiscent of

high-end Swiss creations. The Sjöö Sandström range encompasses everything you would expect from a reliable and traditional watch company, but with a Swedish touch. Look out for the Landsort 459m, which is built to sustain the pressure experienced at 459 metres, the depth of the deepest ravine in the Baltic Sea. The exemplary quality and technological advancement of these timepieces is hardly surprising given the rich, though often overlooked, ‘heritage of skilled Swedish watchmaking,’ according to Sjöö Sandström’s CEO, Felix Formark. The industry is thriving, and Sjöö Sandström makes the most of Swedish craftspeople who hand-make each timepiece in its headquarters in the Södermalm area

of Stockholm. Sjöö Sandström’s watches, with their excellent quality, are created for an educated client. ‘If you choose a Sjöö Sandström watch, you are making a very conscious choice and your knowledge about watches is at a high level,’ explains Formark. Founded in 1986, Sjöö Sandström is a relatively young brand, while another of the nation’s most luxurious horologists, Halda, was set up nearly a century earlier. The company was founded in 1887 but it ceased trading for a few years during which time its factory was transformed into a watch museum. Inspired by a visit in the 1980s, Mikael Sandström decided to pursue a career in the industry. ‘I was determined to get my hands on one of these beautiful early timepieces, and to try and revive the Halda brand,’ he remembers. Sandström went on to run a number of watch companies, including Sjöö Sandström; 116 /

Successful Swedish brands are innovative and show that top design is in harmony with functionality 20 years later in 2006 he was able to take over Halda and has spent the last decade rebuilding the brand. A quote from the company’s founder gave him the impetus to go forward: ‘If you are determined to become the best, you can never compromise. Ever.’ Staying true to this ethos, Sandström has developed Halda, which is 100% Swedish owned, with a core philosophy of ‘innovative luxury’. Only 300 Halda watches are produced each year, not only to protect exclusivity but also because they are complex creations; each watch is designed and assembled just outside of Stockholm, with many parts sourced and produced locally. Key models feature removable faces or ‘modules’, so that the watch can be worn for a variety of occasions. Halda’s watches are technologically advanced: its Space Discovery watch has been tested by astronauts and its Race Pilot is the ‘first real watch ever

made for racing’. A partnership between bladesmith and steelmaker Johan Gustafsson and watchmaker Patrik Sjögren led to another innovative company, GoS. The men met in 2007 and were united by the desire to use artistic practices in watchmaking. Patterned Damascus steel is used, resulting in intricately detailed watches with striking faces, characterised by swirling engravings in rich blues or deep ochres. Gustafsson and Sjögren are inspired by the country’s rich natural landscapes, traditional handicrafts and its Viking heritage. Sjögren describes GoS as an ‘exclusive niche brand’, and its luxurious creations will certainly appeal to anyone looking for a different take on traditional watchmaking. The men are committed to excellence and each timepiece is almost entirely handmade and hand-finished by the founders. The technology is also exemplary at

GoS. The Winter Nights range, inspired by an ancient festival of the same name, features a top-of-the-range movement, the result of a collaboration with German master watchmaker Martin Braun. Exclusivity too is paramount, explains Sjögren. ‘Every detail in the Damascus steel has its own unique pattern, like a fingerprint. It is not possible to create two identical GoS watches, so every watch is unique. In addition to that, our models are limited to a few pieces.’ These are three very different brands, and yet each is intrinsically Swedish. ‘All the successful Swedish brands are innovative and of high quality, and top design is in harmony with supreme functionality,’ says Sandström. The processes and the end products may vary, but at the heart of these three brands is the same goal: to make beautiful, luxurious timepieces with a distinctly Swedish appeal Above (clockwise from far lef): Halda owner Mikael Sandström; the brand’s Race Pilot watch; Patrik Sjögren in the GoS workshop; the brand’s Winter Nights collection

FASHION FORWARD Renowned for its chic and classic designs, Filippa K is also committed to being sustainable. Sally McIlhone fnds out about the Stockholm label’s impressive vision

I

f asked which brand embodies the essence of Swedish style, many insiders would name Filippa K. Its high-quality, strippedback clothing in muted tones, which eschews unnecessary embellishments, has made it a goto brand for modern women. At the same time as maintaining its high-quality, chic collections, the label is also making a name for itself because of its commitment to the environment.

The label’s creative director Nina Bogstedt joined the company almost 20 years ago, shortly after it was founded by Filippa Knutsson. Bogstedt heads up the design team and has been instrumental in developing Filippa K into a pioneer of ecofashion – setting it apart from many other fashion businesses – as well as introducing a wider range of items to its collections.

fore. It has introduced a vision based on nine ‘planetary boundaries’ identified by researchers at Stockholm University, such as chemical pollution and climate change. Filippa K is now centred around fashion where ‘sustainability is the guide to growth’ and which has these planetary boundaries ‘in mind at all times’. For example, the brand has introduced Front Runners, timeless garments that are sustainable and resilient. The first three Front Runners are a classic black dress, top and shirt made with Tencel (a natural and recyclable fabric created from wood pulp). Filippa K has created a set of 12 criteria which a product must fulfill before it can be considered a Front Runner: it must, for example, be made from sustainable materials, use fewer chemicals than other items and be recyclable. In addition, customers must be able to rely on a Front Runner to be a wardrobe staple for years to come. ‘A classic never goes out of style: they are long lasting and can pass through generations if you care for them well enough. A classic is also very often versatile, so it suits many purposes and is easy to match with other pieces,’ Bogstedt explains. The label’s aim is for whole collections to be Front Runners in the next 10 to 15 years: ‘It’s an ambitious target but an

When Bogstedt joined the company in 1997 Filippa K’s collections were ‘mainly stretch jeans and jersey tops’. Over the years, she has ensured that Filippa K’s output is more rounded, and for spring/summer 2016 the brand has produced exceptionally made, utilitarian staples including military-inspired khaki shirts and camel trousers, as well as more directional items such as a cherry red leather biker jacket. Bogstedt’s favourites for the season are a reinterpretation of the classic trench coat, a khaki suit, wide night-blue trousers, and a skirt with a rope belt. In line with such creative thinking, Bogstedt has recently helped Filippa K develop a vision for the future, which has the environment and sustainability at its heart. Sustainability has always been important to the company, which focuses on designing classic, timeless clothing, and now it is bringing environmental and ethical considerations to the Previous page: Filippa K spring/summer 2016

important one,’ Bogstedt stresses. Another interesting initiative is the Lease concept whereby customers can rent menswear or womenswear garments for four days at 20% of the retail price. This service is available in two of Filippa K’s Stockholm stores and provides ‘a more sustainable alternative to traditional consumption.’ The company is determined to carry on developing its environmental credentials. ‘We strive to be innovative and more sustainable, and to carry on learning,’ says Bogstedt. After two decades at Filippa K, Bogstedt continues to be inspired by developments in her home country: ‘The Swedish fashion scene has grown much bigger and is perhaps more interesting today than when Filippa K was founded. There is much more space for new and small-scale designers and it is influenced by more cultures.’ According to Bogstedt, the Filippa K woman flourishes in this climate: ‘I see her as being strong, independent and urbane. The Filippa K woman is a conscious consumer. She wants high quality and doesn’t follow every trend.’ For chic and eco-friendly fashion, Filippa K is a front runner, and will continue to be thanks to Bogstedt’s vision Previous page (from lef): Filippa K creative director Nina Bogstedt; one of the brand’s T-shirts made from Tencel fbres

Swedish labels are a driving force behind some of this season’s most prominent trends, as Ruairidh Pritchard discovered at Stockholm Fashion Week

W

hen it comes to fashion weeks, Stockholm’s has always been the rebellious little sister to the more sophisticated and polished events held in London, Paris and Milan. Stockholm Fashion Week reflects Scandinavia’s charmingly cool approach to style, remaining somewhat aloof and unfazed by the pomp and ceremony experienced at other European events. This 121 /

season’s fashion week was the perfect illustration of the city’s standing within the international fashion community: unnervingly stylish Scandinavian labels took over beautiful venues – and held shows in somewhat unconventional locations – to reveal their unique take on the trends for spring/summer 2016. The week began in the 150-year-old Stora Salongen concert hall, arguably the city’s Lef: J Lindeberg spring/summer 2016

most glamorous venue. Stockholm native Ida Sjöstedt, renowned among Sweden’s most fashionable residents for her ready-to-wear clothing and her bespoke couture, presented her new collection under the hall’s grand, glittering chandeliers. Models went down the runway draped in flowing silks and lace which was scattered with intricate floral embroidery, in outfits which looked to Sweden’s traditional midsummer dress. Bridal-inspired gowns brought the Ida Sjöstedt show to a close; featuring swathes of white and ivory, layered skirts and delicate gemstone and silk-petal embellishments, they signalled one of the strongest trends of the season. Internationally popular Swedish labels

featherlike textures and silhouettes; key pieces, including tailored jackets with fringed epaulettes and fringed leather jackets, were set in whites and nudes. Similarly, Stockholm style stalwart House of Dagmar led with whites and neutral tones. Shapes were kept loose and looks were layered. Meanwhile, in what must be one of the most unconventional fashion week venues on record, Björn Borg launched his latest range under a motorway bridge. His Training for Mars collection included classic bright tennis whites and body-hugging, nude spandex, creating decidedly sporty silhouettes and underlining the white and neutral trend debuted elsewhere. In stark contrast to the week’s initial whitewash, colours began to break through the wall of neutrality via bursts of tropical prints, distressed stonewashed denim and playful pastels, which added depth and balance to the catwalk as the week progressed. One of the most contemporary and youthful labels showing at Stockholm Fashion Week was Cheap Monday. Famed for denim,

equally colourful structured tailoring, with the appearance of lace and fringing. Bringing the week to a close, the final three shows perhaps best exemplified the trends of the season. Mayla, famed for its silk dresses, kept true to form with a collection of flowing pastel blues and emerald greens, giving just brief glimpses of monochrome animal prints. AltewaiSaome, founded by Swedishborn designers Natalia Altewai and Randa Saome, combined clean lines and monochrome with flowing fabrics to reimagine traditional tailored silhouettes, with raw hemmed, patchwork denim breaking up a largely muted palette. Lamija, a past winner of Vogue Italia’s Talent of the Year award, ended the week with an exclusively monochromatic collection of open-loop knits, elaborate embroidery, cut-out leather and hole-punched tailoring. While European fashion is often epitomised by elusive Parisian chic or Italy’s opulent aesthetic, Stockholm Fashion Week proves that when it comes to directional and wearable fashion trends, Scandinavian style is king. Long may it reign

it’s perhaps unsurprising that the label led the opposition to the wave of flowing neutrality, with looks dominated by yellow and green acid wash, black shredded denim, distressed monochrome knitwear, and wide-legged, highwaisted stonewashed jeans. Straddling trends was Stylein, which showed looks largely in monochrome, only interrupted by three floor-length dresses in a refreshing tropical palm print. By Malina’s spring/summer collection saw a re-emergence of happy-go-lucky, 1980s powdered pastels in flowing silks, occasionally boxed in by

With over 200 stores from international and national brands, as well as eateries and entertainment options, the Mall of Scandinavia is one of Europe’s must-visit shopping destinations. William Lee Adams explores the recently opened attraction

W

hen the Mall of Scandinavia opened its doors at the end of last year, its launch was celebrated with a very impressive fireworks display. This was an appropriate gesture to mark the arrival of the largest shopping centre in Scandinavia, which is located just seven minutes by train from Stockholm city centre. The mall has quickly become a retail hub: it is home to more than 220 stores and restaurants, and showcases

a wide range of Swedish and international brands, 14 of which are trading in Sweden for the first time. Spanning more than 100,000 square metres over seven storeys, the mall has been cleverly designed to feel inviting and its designers and architects sought to create a space that would make shopping an enjoyable experience rather than a chore. They drew inspiration from three of the four elements – earth, water and wind – and represented them through artwork, stunning fountains and glorious light displays that change depending on the time of day. This vast space has created an opportunity for brands which can often struggle to find retail space in Stockholm’s crowded central shopping districts. Owing to the mall’s generous design, brands across fashion, sport, leisure and home goods have opened gleaming new shops, many with eightmetre-high facades. ‘Our new flagship store is something special,’ says Andreas Vural, president and founder of Happy Plugs, the Swedish fashion Above (from top): Happy Plugs store; the brand’s earphones

The €640 million project has attracted major fashion players including Michael Kors, the US brand known for its jetset-style collection of handbags, watches, shoes and clothing, and Tommy Hilfiger, the label that celebrates American cool with its own take on prep-school clothing. Among the brands debuting in Sweden are Intimissimi, an Italian lingerie label; Kiko Milano, a cutting-edge Italian cosmetics and beauty brand; and Spanish company Pull&Bear, with its casual, laidback clothing and accessories for young people. For those with children, a childcare service is also available.

The wide range of cafés, coffee shops, brasseries and restaurants is said to provide visitors with the largest choice of eateries in the city and, instead of a food court with communal seating, each venue welcomes guests to its own space. TABLE TALK From Michelin-starred restaurants to train station brasseries, Stockholm’s dining scene is as varied as it is innovative. Theresa Harold tucks in to some of the city’s finest dishes

Long famed for its meatballs and herring, Swedish cuisine has undergone something of a reinvention of late. While there is still an emphasis on meat and fsh, alongside potatoes and other root vegetables, these are being served up in ever-more creative combinations. Blessed with an abundance of natural resources such as crystal-clear waters, woodland and green spaces, Stockholm citizens enjoy fshing and foraging. Chefs too are making the most of what grows on their doorsteps: berries, mushrooms and wild garlic are all popular ingredients. Urban gardening is also on the rise among younger generations. The city has 10,000 allotment gardens meaning that Stockholmers have access to fresh, home-grown food which is often organic and this approach has fltered through to the capital’s most exciting restaurants. Inventive chefs are blending traditional culinary techniques with a focus on organic and local ingredients in what’s become known as New Nordic Cuisine. There are even Michelin-starred restaurants where the chefs are eschewing the modern hot plate and gas stove and instead they are cooking with natural heat, smoke and fre. globalblue.com

Simple and straightforward: that is the philosophy at Hillenberg, according to restaurateur and chef Karl Ljung. With streamlined seating and an elegant display of glassware at the cocktail bar, the restaurant is as much of a treat for the eyes as for the tastebuds but, of course, the true test lies in the food. To this end, Ljung has concocted a menu of European classics with a Scandinvian twist. Try the fried sweetbreads with artichoke, tarragon and soya. REICHSHOF HAMBURG Reichshof Hamburg is the first European hotel from Hilton’s Curio Collection of boutique venues. This centrally located 278-room hotel is close to Hamburg’s central station and has been thoughtfully renovated, encompassing Hanseatic art deco elegance along with contemporary design. Visitors are encouraged to discover the city’s many attractions and, with this in mind, Frank Bertram, a well-

known local chef, presides over the hotel’s Slowman restaurant. Stop by on a Saturday and you’re likely to catch a live music session, and when you’re ready for some tranquillity, head to the spa and fitness facility for a stress-busting massage. WOODSTOCKHOLM Founded by Martin Stensö, Johan Edvardsson and Jon Åström Gröndahl, Woodstockholm is a furniture shop and bistro. In a clever twist, the restaurant is decked out with furniture sold by the company, which means that visitors can trial the pieces before purchase. One of the most eye-catching products is this Aurora lamp by Swedish design studio Uglycute, which changes as the observer moves, creating a personal interactive light show. TOP 3... THINGS TO DO IN VAXHOLM

2. See: Vaxholms Fästnings Museum Housed in the fortress built by King Gustav Vasa in 1544, Vaxholms Fästnings Museum (Vaxholm Fortress Museum) tells the fascinating story of the surrounding building which has withstood attacks from other nations. Kastellet 1, 185 99 Vaxholm, +46 (0)8 5413 1110, vaxholmsfastning.se

PHOTO: HENRIK TRYGG/MEDIABANK.VISITSTOCKHOLM.COM

1. Eat: at Waxholms Hotell While looking wonderfully old-fashioned from the outside, Waxholms Hotell serves seriously good food; the fish dishes are particular highlights. Hamngatan 2, 185 21 Vaxholm, +46 (0)8 5413 0150, waxholmshotell.se

3. Do: take a harbourside stroll Walk through the northern harbour to explore the oldest part of Vaxholm, including the town square, and discover Hamngatan which is home to several interesting galleries and boutiques. IRG ER JA

52: Right On Time

60: Fashion Forward

68: Style Leaders

74: Centre Of Excellence

KappAhl globalblue.com

114: When You Shop The World, Shop Tax Free
