The brainchild of two Dutch people who met after relocating to Stockholm, Maen is a very new entrant on the Swedish watch scene, having launched in autumn 2016. Maen means ‘moon’ in old Dutch, and the brand’s first model is fittingly called Classic Moonphase. The timepiece features a moonphase complication and a rotating disk which enables the wearer to track the waxing and waning of the moon through an aperture on the dial. few years ago, it seemed that every style magazine was praising Sweden’s distinct minimalist fashion. Trends move on, but minimalism has never been a passing fad for the Swedes. The nation and its creatives put lasting style firmly ahead of temporary diversions, and looking at the designs on the catwalks at Stockholm fashion week it is clear that this aesthetic is as covetable today as it was when Scandi-style peaked. The underlying concept of cool, elegant minimalism continues to define the best of Swedish fashion, and a muted colour palette 116

is always a firm fixture of numerous shows at Stockholm fashion week, becoming a style signature of many of Sweden and Scandinavia’s fashion influencers. For spring/summer 2017, Busnel continues its focus on clean silhouettes and luxurious fabrics, sticking to a palette of earthy and neutral tones. Sharp whites, milky creams and cool greys are grounded by khaki and navy. The beauty of this collection is its ability to hold back: nothing could be further from the extravagant clothes seen in Milan and Paris this season. Perhaps more than any other event, Stockholm fashion week consistently makes the case for all-white dressing. Stylein’s orientalinspired tailoring looks fresh and crisp in all-white, with the simple colour helping to avoid any hint of costume. L’Homme Rouge shows that men too can buy into the trend, with a coordinating waistcoat and trousers, finished on the catwalk with white two-strap sandals. Fashion-forward, yes, but the perfectly minimal shapes make a bold look accessible. Swedish designers rarely go all-out for print and texture, but when they do they know to keep the silhouette minimal. Ida Sjöstedt’s lipstick motif adds a splash of excitement to the classic shapes of her spring/summer collection. Elsewhere, her more intricate creations – which celebrate femininity through tulle, floral
appliqué, lace, embroidery and more – are realised in head-to-toe whites, creams and soft yellows. These are beautiful as bridal gowns, and Sjöstedt’s couture pieces can be made to order – book an appointment at her atelier in Södermalm to find out more. Stand was founded in 2014 with a simple aim: to make expertly designed high-fashion leather clothing at accessible prices. This season’s collection presents feminine, ruffled one-shoulder dresses and tops in black or white soft leather, proving the powerful impact that a simple concept can have. Colour and print are incorporated by way of a pink suede two piece and two slouchy leopard print coats, but at heart this is a collection about neutral colours and simple shapes made special by the use of luxurious fabrics. Of course, not all Swedish designers stick to limited colour palettes and classic shapes. At Ida Klamborn, mesh vests, pink miniskirts with chocolate brown star motifs, and origamihemmed pencil skirts in bright red, all made an appearance on the catwalk. But the designer’s sports and streetwear-influenced collection still found its grounding in the style principles of Swedish minimalism. The mesh vest was styled over a crisp white shirt, the starred skirt paired with a slouchy sweater, and the pencil skirt’s unusual hem balanced by a nipped-in and belted waist. The balance of experimentation with tried-and-tested concepts results in pieces which fit easily into the wardrobe. Similarly at Whyred, bolder fashion statements are grounded by simple styling techniques, classic cuts and shapes, or the use
of muted colour schemes. An intricate dress with a double-layered bodice and patchwork skirt feels more casual because of the use of a simple colour scheme of navy, white and beige. A matching tunic and wide-legged trousers again embrace mixed fabrics but a cool stone colour calms the concept. A boldly graphic printed suit is cut to slim proportions, its sleek lines counteracting the busy pattern. Sweden’s designers – like those from many countries – continue to experiment each season, embracing new ideas, shapes and forms. But a distinct approach underlies the national aesthetic: less is more, and simple is elegant. And if the continued success of the nation’s designers is anything to go by, discerning customers around the world are keen for Swedish minimalism to maintain its place

fter the long and harsh winter, Swedes make the most of the warmer months by spending time in their countryside summer cabins, where they immerse themselves in nature. Many have no running water, heating or modern facilities, and these cabins mark a return to basic living. This simple way of life has an inherent romance and gives visitors the chance to enjoy never-toforget experiences. The tradition of spending time in your summer cabin is also popular with visitors to Sweden. Mia Stensgaard, a celebrated set and costume designer from Denmark, is a devotee of this type of holiday and each summer she heads to a small Swedish island with her family. ‘Living in the city, we love leading the simple life for two months each year in our Swedish summer cabin, enjoying the sense of wilderness amid forest, lakes and berries,’ she enthuses. midnight sun, warm clothing and accessories are vital. Roll-necks are on trend and are ideal when in the Swedish countryside. A wide range of options are available, from the subtle women’s versions available at Cos and Rodebjer, to the bold, striped men’s designs seen on Whyred’s spring/summer 2017 catwalk. Blankets are another summer cabin essential. Scandinavia has a long tradition of blanket-making and provision: in the 1950s, blankets were provided on purchasing a Volvo car. The skill of crafting blankets fell out of fashion, but a number of brands are
while staying at a summer cabin this season: Swedish army shirts and trousers from Fristads Kansas when exploring the countryside, while for a party or a trip to a restaurant she recommends ‘a nice kimono-style garment, though the look is still very casual.’ Foraging is a popular pastime when visiting the Swedish countryside, which requires specialist local knowledge, and visitors are advised to find an experienced guide. Indigofera is best known for its artisan selvedge jeans, but beautifully designed blankets also form part of each collection. ‘Swedes, including me, like to spend as much time outdoors in the summer as possible, no matter how chilly it is. Blankets are indispensable during cool summer evenings,’ says Mats Andersson, owner of Indigofera. The blankets currently sold by the company are handcrafted at a small family-owned business in northern Norway using locally sourced wool, echoing times gone by. It’s also wise to be prepared in case of rain when out and about in the Swedish countryside, and Scandinavia excels at functional and fashionable wet-weather coats. Stutterheim and new-entrant to the market Bomärke have raincoats in an array of colours, from pastels to earthy tones. Complete your moisture-busting armour with a pair of Tretorn wellington boots which, as well as being comfortable, have soles with a good grip, making them suitable for hiking. While summer cabin life calls mostly for a practical wardrobe, there’s room for frivolity
too. Midsummer’s eve is a major event in Sweden and is embraced as an opportunity to dress up – visitors are likely to come across celebrations where traditional folk costumes are worn. For appropriate contemporary clothing, look to Rodebjer, whose kaftan and kimono silhouettes lend themselves well to Swedish summers as they can be layered or worn alone. One of the highlights of the resort 2017 collection is an ankle-skimming silk chiffon piece featuring a graphic arrangement of stripes inspired by landscapes and mountaintops. Swedish Hasbeens’ colourful wooden sandals are suitably festive, and are sturdy enough for those looking to dance the night away. ravel outside of Sweden’s cities and into the countryside and it quickly becomes apparent that the landscape is abundant in one particular natural resource: wood. Birch, spruce and, most notably, pine have fuelled the national economy for centuries. In the Middle Ages, wood tar and other products derived from these trees were exported and later charcoal was supplied to the mining and metals industries. By the turn of the 20th century, logging had become an important sector.

Wood has had many domestic uses in Sweden. the dalahäst – a delightful red wooden horse with colourful patterns. Perhaps the most famous contemporary use of Swedish wood is in furniture-making, with craftspeople using the country’s distinctive light wood to create minimalist designs. However, in domestic settings, the love of wood is perhaps most apparent in the kitchen, and visitors to Stockholm are spoilt for choice when it comes to stores selling wooden cooking implements and dining accessories. Shops such as Designtorget and the store at Skansen, the capital’s folk museum, stock an impressive selection of wooden bowls, chopping boards, cutlery, brushes, spatulas, herring forks, coffee scoops… it seems that every imaginable accessory can be found in this medium. Special pieces are made from pear wood, which is harder than other woods and therefore less easy to work with, and are carved from a single piece of wood. Iris Hantverk started as a brush-maker in the late 19th century. as personal care items such as hairbrushes and toothbrushes. A standout item at Iris Hantverk is a simple yet elegant large wooden plate, which will suit any home. Since it started, the enterprise has worked with visually impaired craftsmen, and today five artisans based to the south of Stockholm in Sandsborgsvägen bind brushes using traditional Swedish techniques. The wide benefits of wooden utensils may have been forgotten in an age when our kitchens are full of high-tech tools. Wooden utensils don’t chemically react with acidic foods or leach into foods, they don’t scratch pots and pans, they don’t retain heat or melt, and they are extremely sturdy, particularly when made from one piece of wood. down through the generations. Wood changes colour and even shape over time, gaining a patina through use, so a utensil can develop character over the decades. Stores such as Iris Hantverk reflect the high regard Swedes have for handcrafted products – whether silverware, hand-blown glass, wickerwork, embroidered goods, woven textiles or wooden items. The making of utensils in wood is recognised as a specialist art by Hemslöjden (the National Association of Swedish Handicraft Societies), which has promoted this skill for more than a century, and spoon-making in particular is a celebrated art: today, hand-painted spoons are given as decorative items rather than as functional pieces. The interest in wooden utensils can also be seen in other parts of Scandinavia: in 2014, Norwegian designer Stian Korntved Ruud decided to explore the extensive possibilities of the craft by creating a different spoon by hand every day for one year. Wille Sundqvist, a 90-year-old craftsman who makes spoons, ladles and bowls in Västerbotten, northern Sweden, is known nationally and internationally for his craft, as is his son Jogge. The Swedes take their wood seriously and there is much to discover for the curious visitor to Stockholm

Respected around the world for his sporting talent, Swedish tennis champion Björn Borg has gone on to create an impressive clothing brand. Ruairidh Pritchard reports

jörn Borg is undeniably among Sweden’s most famous exports. An extraordinary tennis player, he was ranked number one in the world from 1977 for four years and won the Wimbledon men’s singles championship five years in a row, a record only equalled, so far, by Roger Federer. He became an icon, not just for his sporting achievements, but for his looks, personal magnetism and sense of style. In 1984, with the help of Swedish designer Rohdi Heintz, the 120
tennis superstar launched his first clothing collection, a line of sportswear which reflected his own aesthetic and attitude. The enterprise was a success, but it was a daring step in a rather unconventional direction that changed Borg’s legacy forever: a venture into the world of underwear. In 1989, recognising a market for underwear that went beyond the conventional Y-front briefs that pervaded the men’s market at the time, the brand created the Classic Shorts 3201. 17 pieces, stitched together with flat-lock seams to create a faultless fit. They were a revolution in the field, providing support and comfort even for the most active men. Within a couple of years, Björn Borg underwear became one of the most indemand pieces of clothing in Sweden, cementing the place of the brand and its founders in design history. By the 1990s the underwear had become popular outside of Sweden, with fans in Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium and Australia. Today, the brand produces multiple collections of stylish and innovative men’s and women’s underwear, sportswear and accessories each year. Now a leading label in Sweden, Björn Borg is a major attraction at Stockholm Fashion Week each season.

For spring/summer 2017, the brand is honouring its sporting heritage with eight collections of crisp, stylish and functional sports-inspired streetwear, tennis apparel, performance apparel and swimwear, as well as several underwear collections. Across all of the brand’s output this season the main inspiration is, as might be expected, tennis. The key artwork is a collage centred around Borg and his sporting achievements: the letter B features, as do images and patterns of tennis courts, and the number 74, in relation to 1974, the year in which he won five consecutive titles. As Toni Marević, the brand’s head of design for apparel, explains,
‘White is the most important colour for the apparel collection, and we have worked with the racket shape and the court line in details.’ Central to the brand, and one reason why it is so popular, is the combination of sporting functionality and street-style credibility. This season, the label has taken this even further, with the inclusion of more fashionfocused, technical streetwear, ‘catering to the idea that you can go to work in your workout clothes, without looking like you are on the way to the gym,’ explains Marević. Always looking to expand its range, Björn Borg has introduced new lines

and has updated existing products. Performance underwear, designed with sporting performance and functionality in mind, has been added which features prints and colours from the main collection, while the swimwear offering has also been restructured to create a wider variety of options. ‘Our women’s swimwear has been almost completely revamped. You will find a broad selection of sports tops, bikinis, bandeaus and swimsuits and accompanying bottoms which all come in really strong prints and colours,’ says James Lee, head of design for the brand’s underwear collections. And yet, for now, the

Japanese fusion restaurant Kasai opened last summer and quickly became one of the most in-demand eateries in Stockholm. Restaurateur Daniel Crespi and chef Mikael Einarsson are fierce proponents of the noseto-tail movement, which encourages every part of an animal to be used in the kitchen. Omakase Köttslöjd is, therefore, a bold concept. In this small space, diners are served a menu comprising 15 to 20 courses of expertly prepared meats accompanied by local seafood and vegetables. All the köttslöjd (charcuterie) is cured by the team, with other ingredients chosen for their freshness and seasonality. Food is served in a method inspired by Japanese cuisine, with similarities to sushi and also to kaiseki, an approach that favours intricately and beautifully arranged dishes. Consequently, home-made charcuterie is artistically presented and often finished daintily with an edible garnish. The area is home to a host of Sweden’s leading labels including Rodebjer, Whyred, Byredo and Sandqvist. Stock up on quirky sandals from Swedish Hasbeens and jeans by Nudie on Jakobsbersgatan before heading to Cow Parfymeri for the latest beauty launches from a variety of brands.
3pm Spend the afternoon exploring Skansen, an open-air museum founded in 1891 which gives an insight into 500 years of Swedish history. Leave time to visit the adjoining zoo, which houses Scandinavian animals including wolverines, lynxes and grey seals. 7pm For a truly memorable meal, visit Operakällaren, whose main dining room is often cited as one of the most beautiful in Sweden. Explore the à la carte options, or push the boat out with the tasting menu and be sure to sample the restaurant’s own champagne and aquavit.

Особые предметы вырезают из цельного массива и часто используют для этого древесину груши, которая тверже других пород и потому сложнее в обработке. Компания Iris Hantverk была основана в конце 19 века и специализировалась на щетках. Сейчас у нее два магазина в Стокгольме и огромный ассортимент аксессуаров для кухни, ванной и сада, а также расчески, зубные щетки и другие предметы личного пользования. На протяжении всей своей истории компания приглашает к сотрудничеству мастеров с ослабленным зрением. И в наши дни пятеро ремесленников практикуют традиционные шведские техники обвязывания щеток, базируясь в студии Iris Hantverk в районе Sandsborgsvägen на юге Стокгольма. В 2014 году норвежский дизайнер Стиан Корнтвед Руд ради исследования возможностей этого ремесла решился на эксперимент: в течение года он каждый день создавал вручную по одной ложке, не похожей на все остальные. 90-летний Вилле Сундквист живет в Västerbotten на севере Швеции и вырезает из дерева ложки, ковши и чаши. Его мастерство известно не только в стране, но и за ее пределами, как и работы его сына Йогге. Шведы серьезно относятся к своему дереву.
