Cult Stockholm-based perfumer Stora Skuggan has launched the latest in its range of uniquely formulated, stylishly bottled fragrances. Moonmilk is a natural phenomenon named by Swiss naturalist Conrad Gessner in 1555. The term refers to a mysterious, glistening form of limestone found in caves – it is particularly striking when illuminated by moonlight. Inspired by Gessner’s description, the Stora Skuggan team was reminded of the earthy yet otherworldly scent of sandalwood and set out to create Moonmilk, which also features notes of Save up to 19% by shopping tax free, see page 86

The scent acts as a reminder of the beguiling power of nature, while the distinctive bottle wouldn’t look out of place on the most elegant dressing table. lt Stora Skuggan Moonmilk eau de parfum, 30ml, SEK 1,200, Stora Skuggan, Östgötagatan 18, 116 25 Stockholm, storaskuggan.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 80

SHINING IN THE RAIN As well collaborating with Marni on a colourful collection, Stutterheim has also teamed up with Slovakian footwear brand Novesta on a range of rubber Chelsea boots this season. The unisex Stutterheim Chelsea Rainwalkers (SEK 1,199) come in three different colourways: a black upper is bought to life with a contrasting sole in either white, grey or red. Novesta’s expertise with natural rubber is carried through to this capsule collection. The styles are made of natural

rubber with a cotton lining and are a perfect addition to the Stutterheim premium range of functional pieces for rain and the outdoors. Protecting you from the occasional summer rain shower without compromising on style, these are an appropriate footwear choice when exploring Sweden. grc Stutterheim, Åsögatan 136, 116 24 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 4081 0398, stutterheim.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 83

Byredo, founded by Swedish native Ben Gorham in 2006, added new scent Bibliothèque to its elegant fragrance collection in March. Inspired by libraries and the ancient pages of leatherbound books, the eau de parfum (50ml, SEK 1,100) is defined by Byredo’s signature patchouli base. Bibliothèque also includes notes of peach, plum, peony and violet, adding sweet, light top notes to an otherwise deep fragrance. lt Byredo, Mäster Samuelsgatan 10, 111 44, Stockholm, +46 (0)8 5250 2615, byredo.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 71 Save up to 19% by shopping tax free, see page 86

In the short space of time since The Cords & Co launched in August 2017, this Stockholm-based company has already conquered several countries with its premium corduroy denim. Led by Mikael Söderlindh, the brains behind Happy Socks, and CEO Omar Varts, the brand is constructed around corduroy staples such as five-pocket trousers. For spring/summer 2018 expect lightweight corduroy pieces with a vintage-style finish, in the form of shorts, dungarees, kimono jackets and T-shirts. A colour scheme reminiscent of California’s richly hued Salvation Mountain lends a playful edge to the brand’s second collection. grc The Cords & Co, Åsögatan 132, 116 24 Stockholm, thecords.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 83

For its new store in Stockholm’s Mall of Scandinavia, Swarovski looked to its own defining material for the design. The Crystal Forest retail concept brings customers into the Swarovski world from their very first glimpse of the store. The architectural facade features stainless steel prisms that glisten like crystal and reflect the light from the exterior. The interior continues the theme – the boutique’s walls are covered with reflective prisms, brought to life by ambient lighting, allowing visitors to embrace the brand’s sparkling vision. The boutique stocks all manner of Swarovski products from jewellery to homeware and men’s accessories and its appeal is clear to see. lt Swarovski, Mall of Scandinavia, Stjärntorget 2, 169 79 Solna, +46 (0)7 3934 3725, swarovski.com

Sweden’s leading labels have captured an international market with their distinctive aesthetic and refreshing approach to fashion. Rebecca Rhys-Evans investigates the enduring appeal of the nation’s designers

rom the avant-garde luxury of Acne Studios to the revolutionary fast fashion of high-street giant H&M, Swedish brands have an impressive presence on the international fashion landscape. Companies from this Nordic nation have a reputation for defying design norms, and over the years have developed a distinctive, easily recognisable national style. It is a combination of aesthetic, substance and sustainability that has gained Swedish brands such a permanent place in homes and wardrobes across the world. 88

92

Brands from Sweden emphasise craft over trends, although there is a definite fashionforward aesthetic to Swedish style that is often defined as minimal or conceptual – designers tend to focus on innovation rather than heritage. The impact of Swedish clothing design comes not from bold floral prints, intricate lace or embroidered detailing, but, more often, from exaggerated silhouettes and functional fabrics. The rules of gendered fashion are frequently broken. Femininity is not defined by pastel palettes or fitted floral Above (clockwise from left): two characteristically minimalist Cos pieces; Acne Studios, all spring/summer 2018

dresses; masculinity is not confined to sharp suiting and dark tones. The H&M group’s Cos label, for example, is known for producing unstructured suits, crisp white shirts and oversized pieces for women. Stockholm-based catwalk label Acne Studios adopted pink as its trademark colour from its beginnings in 1996, putting men in this typically feminine hue right from the start. Pushing inclusivity further, Sweden’s style also sidesteps ‘age-appropriate’ dressing. For the Acne Studios 2018 Resort collection, cofounder and creative director Jonny Johansson has chosen to use 78-year-old model Veruschka von Lehndorff as the face of its campaign. Johansson explains that the idea is to be

Swedish labels are known for their integrity ‘current and honest’, pushing the idea that an icon can be of any age and that Swedish fashion has no age limitations: its style is timeless. Swedish dress codes are much more casual and practical than those of other European fashion capitals such as Paris or Milan, so streetwear has become an integral part of Nordic style. Sneakers are readily combined with skirts or suits and cuts are always neat and functional. Clothing made from technical materials, which enable the body to move easily and breathe, is designed for life and adapts as readily to commuting by bike as to the changing seasons. Stockholm-based J Lindeberg began as a golfing and ready-to-wear brand and its designers thus understand how to fuse elements of sport and fashion, making everyday clothing more practical. Striving to achieve this defines the brand’s mission and, to an extent, that of Swedish fashion in general. Creative director Jens Werner explains that ‘trends are important to know, but not necessarily to follow’, stressing that J Lindeberg’s concept of fashion goes beyond trends. Inspiration comes from realAbove (from left): Acne Studios spring/summer 2018; the brand’s Resort 2018 collection modelled by Veruschka von Lehndorff

they create affordably priced, unisex styles that can be worn forever. Jonny Johansson states that Acne Studios does not pay celebrities to wear the brand, telling GQ magazine that ‘what’s interesting is when people find your clothing and they interpret it in their own way.’ This stance gives Swedish brands a cult-like status as well as an integrity that distances them from the disposable nature of trends and fast fashion, instead encouraging individuality. Sweden puts great emphasis on the ethical responsibility of companies to be sustainable. The growth of environmentally friendly clothing means garments last longer, and customers feel they’re investing in high-quality items. This has had an impact on all levels of design, from high street to luxury. The H&M group advises customers on how to wash and care for clothing so that garments will last longer, and follows farming and industry standards that minimise the use of hazardous chemicals. The group’s Weekday label, for example, which has seen rapid recent expansion and now has 30 stores, has strict environmental and efficiency guidelines that means it does not use PVC or fur; its merino wool is humanely produced and all its leather comes from stock reared for meat production. Swedish fashion houses generally encourage a culture of transparency, from being open about their choice of suppliers and materials to giving advice on how to care for products to prolong their lifespan. life sources as varied as ‘an art exhibition, an Instagram post, a conversation, architecture or a vintage sample.’ Jonathan Hirschfeld and Max Schiller, founders of sneaker brand Eytys, follow similar principles, confessing that, despite being coowners of one of the world’s most influential sneaker brands, neither associates themselves with ‘the sneaker hype scene’. Swedish brands also differ from other international labels in their lack of desire to be endorsed by celebrities. The Eytys duo eschews the idea of trend-led footwear created in collaboration with A-list celebrities – models which inevitably come with a high cost. Instead, Above (clockwise from left): J Lindeberg; two styles from Eytys, all spring/summer 2018

Swedish brands offer guilt-free fashion that is globally popular

The power of Swedish brands is largely down to the endurance of their products. Not only does the substantial quality of the garments promise long-term wear, but the styles are most definitely more timeless. This applies to lifestyle brands too: names as diverse as Ikea and Spotify, which strive for innovation and modernity, were also launched in Sweden. As a guiding principle, Swedish lifestyle and company culture tackles the idea of necessity, carving an identity for guilt-free fashion that is globally popular. As Jonny Johansson explains, ‘If you are from Sweden, you grew up with Swedish design – it’s in your DNA, functionality.’ Above (clockwise from top left): J Lindeberg creative director Jens Werner; Weekday; J Lindeberg, both spring/summer 2018

he names of Sweden’s leading fashion brands are known across the world, yet, while Scandinavian style has become a byword for cool, the nation’s own design stores are still operating relatively out of the limelight. With everything from perfect prints to handmade wooden pieces and future design classics available in its homeware boutiques on offer, now is the time to discover Stockholm’s interiors experts. Svenskt Tenn is one of Sweden’s most time-honoured design houses, founded by Estrid Ericson, with a history that stretches back to 1924. A collaboration with Austrian architect Josef Frank produced some of the brand’s most captivating printed items, which continue to challenge Sweden’s penchant for minimalism. ‘When Josef Frank started working with Estrid Ericson in 1934, he stood against Swedish minimalism and brought colours and much softer design to the Swedish scene,’ explains Thommy Bindefeld, Svenskt Tenn’s marketing and creative director. Frank’s prints have stood the test of time, and the rich floral designs he

Still captivating and modern, the tempting pewter bowls and candle holders shaped like tree trunks would not look out of place in today’s most elegant home. ‘Pewter is really at the heart of the company and we have a dedicated room in the shop to show our pewter assortment,’ says Bindefeld. ‘We have classic designs from the 1920s, when Estrid Ericson started working with pewter, as well as contemporary designs by established as well as new, young designers.’ By working with designers who drive the label forward, Svenskt Tenn ensures it stays relevant in today’s market. ‘Svenskt Tenn has Above (from top): a selection of Iris Hantverk brushes; the brand’s grooming products

To support this endeavour, customers can invest in a suitcase-friendly table brush or a washing-up whisk – ideal, natural items that not only support visually impaired craftsmen, but also bring a touch of Iris Hantverk’s clean, uncomplicated style to your home. a base of classic and timeless design by Josef Frank and Estrid Ericson and, when mixed with contemporary design, it looks fresh and modern,’ says Bindefeld. ‘We are going to launch some new fabrics made by contemporary designers this spring. It is going to be very interesting to see how these fabrics play together with Josef Frank’s classic designs.’ Iris Hantverk is another Swedish brand with a long-established heritage. It is known for its brushes – from body brushes for the bathroom to dish brushes for the kitchen. Sara Edhäll and Richard Sparrenhök have been in charge of the company since 2012. Edhäll believes it’s the brand’s focus on ‘functional design’ and ‘carefully selected natural materials’ that ensures Iris Hantverk remains relevant. ‘Our designs strive to be pleasing to the eye and at the same time be very tactile,’ she says. ‘We don’t hide the product in fancy packaging. The design always supports the function.’ As well as creating ‘straightforward, honest’ items for the home, the Iris Hantverk business has a philanthropic aspect at its heart. ‘Handmade brushes by visually impaired craftsmen –this is our history and reason for being,’ explains Edhäll. Though the Swedish government cut the funding for employing visually impaired craftsmen, Iris Hantverk continues to support this disadvantaged group.

Swedish interior design items combine functionality with surprising, playful details in the interiors market by opening a design store in Stockholm’s Gamla Stan area. ‘We love Gamla Stan; it has a feel to it that you can’t find anywhere else in the city, it breathes history,’ Minnie Boulala explains. ‘And we felt that it was missing what we had to offer. More or less every person that comes to Stockholm will pass through Gamla Stan and that’s the place where you should be able to see what Sweden and Scandinavia have to offer when it comes to interior design.’ Every product offered by Designfirman in its Gamla Stan and Västerlånggatan boutiques is personally selected. ‘I sell things that are modern, up-to-date, that we believe will be a design classic in the future – the future’s antiques,’ says Minnie Boulala. ‘Designers come to us when they have something that fits in our shop; they want us to sell it. They like

our shops because they’re intimate, they’re very classical in the way that they are designed. One of the shops is situated in a palace that was built in the 1600s. It’s unique and I think people like to see their products being exposed in that kind of environment.’ When it comes to the Designfirman products visitors to Stockholm should invest in, Boulala mentions the Äng vase, designed by Eva Schildt for Klong, as well as Skultuna’s Lily candlestick. ‘Swedish interior design items always fulfil a practical purpose,’ she asserts – but they can also be surprising. The Lily candlestick, for example, can be transformed into a vase with the insertion of a small glass tube. Thanks to this combination of functionality and surprising details that raise a smile, now is the time to discover the Swedish interiors scene – before everyone else does

TABLE TALK Spanish-style tapas dishes have become popular across Europe and Stockholm is well ahead of the trend, as Katie Muxworthy discovers Tapas, a Spanish culinary institution consisting of small, appetising dishes that are perfect for sharing, are fast becoming a stylish new food trend across Europe. Unsurprisingly, super-cool Stockholm is ahead of the curve and is home to a selection of smart restaurants and bars that offer some of the best tapas in Scandinavia. These tempting small plates are a perfect choice for adventurous diners who like to sample multiple dishes. In Stockholm’s lively tapas restaurants, the focus is often on locally sourced ingredients, giving some of these Spanish-style dishes a distinctly Swedish twist.

SUPPER Mingle with Stockholm’s cool crowd in this industrial-style basement bar, which serves some of the city’s tastiest tapas-style plates. The open kitchen allows patrons to watch the chefs skilfully create delectable dishes, while the central bar offers some of the city’s most delicious cocktails. We recommend the tartar de atún (marinated tuna, avocado and fried cassava), the taco de cerdo (pork, pickled silverskin onions, jalapeno salsa and chilli mayonnaise) and the house chilli. The latter, slow-cooked chuck beef flavoured with chocolate and chilli, is one of Supper’s most popular dishes. Supper, Tegnérgatan 37, 111 61 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 232424, supper.nu globalblue.com

EL CIELO Inspired by South American cuisine, El Cielo offers an enticing range of Spanish tapas and Columbian picadas alongside more substantial meat and fish dishes. The restaurant boasts a terrace for al fresco dining in summer. High-quality ingredients are used to create small plates such as quesadillas stuffed with spicy chicken, jalapeño peppers and guacamole, alongside traditional Peruvian ceviche and papas fritas (Spanish fries) – all perfect for sharing. Popular among locals, El Cielo gets busy after working hours, when customers flock to share tasty dishes over a glass or two of wine. If you’re looking for a place to fuel up before a day of shopping at the weekend, be sure to check out the brunch menu. El Cielo, Fleminggatan 22A, 112 32 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 651 5300, elcielo.se

CULTUR The Cultur bar and restaurant is famous locally for two things: the distinctly Scandinavian twist it puts on tapas, and its extensive wine list, both guaranteed to satisfy even the most discerning palate. Expect cured meats from local butchers, oysters and smoked shrimp to start, before the main event – when it’s a case of the more dishes, the better. One not to be overlooked is the terrine of pork sourced from Flistad farm, served with spring truffle, endive and saltpickled cucumber. Flamed mackerel with white asparagus and onion oil is another highlight. Round off your meal with a sweet treat in the form of raspberry sherbet accompanied by fresh berries, toasted white chocolate and baked dark chocolate mousse. Cultur, Österlånggatan 34, 111 31 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 226666, culturbar.se globalblue.com

TRIWA

PHOTO: FREDRIKODMAN.COM

Triwa, which stands for Transforming the Industry of Watches, is a Swedish watch brand with a mission. Rather than focusing on the status and tradition ordinarily associated with watches, Triwa’s watches are born out of Scandinavian ideals of minimalism and simplicity within a classic silhouette. The brand, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, now offers 10 key models in seemingly endless combinations of colourways and materials. Each was designed in Triwa’s Stockholm creative studio and each is Scandinavian to the core. LE ROUGE Le Rouge on Brunnsgränd in the Gamla Stan district, one of Sweden’s most elegant eateries, is the perfect place for a theatrical meal in Stockholm. Formerly a fish market, then a potato store and later a wine house, the building dates back to the 18th century, but has consistently been home to food and wine. Its latest reinvention as a Moulin-Rouge inspired bar and steak restaurant has proved extremely popular with locals and visitors alike. Highlights include classic cocktails, an extensive wine list and premium cuts of beef, including Swedish rib-eye served with roasted beets and goat cheese. BJÖRK & BERRIES Swedish eco-luxury brand Björk & Berries began as a small project deep in forests of northern Sweden. Using ancient techniques and natural resources, the brand developed a collection of sustainable, modern beauty products, all 100% made in Sweden. For its latest launch, the brand took inspiration from rare wild orchids whose scent gets stronger in the moonlight. Moonflower eau de parfum (50ml, SEK 690) contains notes of peach, patchouli and fig leaves mingled with a floral bouquet, making it a perfect day-to-night fragrance. Global Blue Retailer
