In November 2018, Cartier opened a store in Stockholm, a momentous occasion since this is the French jewellery house’s first Scandinavian boutique. Fittingly, the interiors are inspired by Scandinavian design, with the use of natural materials such as wood echoing the beautiful Swedish landscape. The Nordic feel that runs throughout accentuates the beauty of Cartier’s jewellery; white wood and beige upholstery serve as a neutral backdrop for the area that Save up to 19% by shopping tax free, see page 56

ONE TO WATCH: BITE By Independent Thinkers for Environmental Progress, known as BITE, presents its third collection for spring/ summer 2019. The luxury womenswear brand was founded between Stockholm and London, where its atelier is located. Timelessness and craftsmanship are two defining traits of this brand, which operates with a sustainable outlook, using only natural fabrics certified as organic. The spring/summer collection is based around light colours, and features collaborations with artist Aisha Christison and jeweller Gala Colivet Dennison. grc NK, Hamngatan 18-20, 111 47 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 762 8000, bitestudios.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 49
DENIM CELEBRATION For spring/summer 2019, in celebration of the brand’s 25th anniversary, Filippa K has unveiled a special collection centred on denim. The Swedish brand’s first collection, for autumn/winter 1993, featured a stretch jean that was an immediate success. Looking back to these beginnings, Filippa K has created the FK Jeans collection, which takes inspiration from the 90s and the brand’s Swedish roots. Comprising nine styles, FK Jeans includes four jean cuts for women and one for men, jackets, a skirt and a shirt, all of which draw on the timeless appeal of denim. grc Filippa K, Grev Turegatan 18, 114 46 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 5458 8888, filippa-k.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 47 globalblue.com

A GRACEFUL LOOK Acne Studios explores the concept of dance for spring/summer 2019, as creative director Jonny Johansson was inspired by the wardrobes of dancers at various stages throughout their day. Knitted bodies, transparent slip dresses, plissé trousers and voluminous blouses express the ideas of movement so often associated with the art form. Swan prints, drawings of famous opera houses and prints of dance company posters add further references to the world of dance. grc Acne Studios, Norrmalmstorg 2, Stockholm 111 46, +46 (0)8 611 6411, acnestudios.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 49
SECOND TO NONE This year IWC Schaffhausen introduced a new Spitfire line. Part of the brand’s Pilot’s Watches collection, the Spitfire watches are a tribute to the exceptional engineering of the British aircraft bearing the same name. The new line includes the pictured Pilot’s Watch Automatic Spitfire (SEK 50,500); this timepiece sees IWC Schaffhausen use a movement from its new 32000 calibre family in the Pilot collection for the first time. watch is an important purchase, whether you are looking for a luxury investment piece to be passed down through generations or a modern, more affordable quartz model that will become an invaluable asset in your day-to-day life. While countries such as Switzerland and Germany have been famed for their watchmaking for centuries, customers are now looking to Stockholm to provide watches at both ends of the spectrum. Why now? One answer certainly lies in innovation. New Swedish watch brands are determined to make their mark on a global scale. One such company is Daniel Wellington. Founded in 2011, it was the fastest growing business in Europe in 2017. Owned by Swedish entrepreneur Filip Tysander, the brand was named after a stylish
Rolex-wearing Englishman Tysander met while travelling in Australia. Daniel Wellington watches are sleek, simple and, above all, affordable, with models starting at SEK 899, but it is not just the watches that have turned the company into such a revolutionary brand. A clever social media strategy led by influencers is another key to its success. The brand’s 4.5 million Instagram followers and #dwpickoftheday hashtag (over 59,000 posts as of March 2019) have shaken up the watch industry and engaged a global audience of internet-savvy Millennials. Doing things differently is also the aim of Triwa, which stands for Transforming the Industry of Watches. As the name suggests, this Swedish brand stemmed from a desire to turn the business of watchmaking on its head.

‘When we started in 2007, very few of our friends were wearing watches and the industry was too traditional,’ says Ludvig Scheja, Triwa creative director. ‘Being a new player in an old industry can sometimes be an advantage,’ he notes. ‘We’re not bound by traditions, which makes it easier for us to challenge them.’ The relationship between the brand and Stockholm itself is vital. Triwa clocks can be spotted around the city, as the brand is one of its official timekeepers. ‘We are good at trying new ideas here and we normally tweak them into something unique,’ says Scheja. ‘In a small city we’re always close to other industries and inspiration.’ Triwa’s minimalist designs and moderate, competitive pricing have
attracted fans across the globe. ‘Our biggest market today is Japan. We see a lot of our international customers coming to the store in Stockholm. It’s important for us to show them the brand in a physical way and to meet them,’ Scheja remarks. Despite the digitally focused nature of many Swedish watch brands, it seems that bricks-andmortar stores still play a vital role. ‘We’ve had our brand store at Torsgatan in Stockholm since 2014 and it really embodies our design values,’ says Ola E Bernestål, founder and creative director of Stockholm-based TID Watches. ‘The store has always been an extension of our office space as well as an important gathering place for friends and partners. Apart from meeting customers on

I’M NOT JUST A REGULAR MALL. T H E Y C A L L M E “ T H E M A L L .” I’ve been “The Mall” in Stockholm city for quite some time now. But lately, there’s been some changes at my place. I’ve actually had a total makeover. I’ve now expanded with new flagship stores like Kicks (Sweden’s makeup-mecca), along side my old friends such as Hollister and Nike still by my side. I also carry cafes and restaurants for every urge, and much more. Step inside and enjoy the new me. Welcome to Gallerian.

a daily basis, we often arrange events and parties here.’ Like Triwa, TID has seen huge growth in its international customer base over the years. ‘The world is so interconnected these days, we’ve had a global focus since day one,’ remarks Bernestål. ‘Japan has always been our biggest market. I would say that the typical TID customer has an international approach; our key audience is not solely Swedish.’ While it is clear that young Swedish brands are doing an excellent job of increasing watch sales in Stockholm, that is only half of the story. Sweden has some of the highest VAT rates in Europe, so international customers can claim back up to 19% tax when shopping with Global Blue (in Switzerland, the home of watchmaking, this refund is 7.7%). This rate has seen luxury watch sales grow into one of the top
categories for refunds in Sweden, meaning an ever-growing market for watch retailers. Established in Stockholm since 1832, the Rob Engström watch boutique sees floods of international visitors coming through the doors to purchase Swiss watches from the likes of Rolex and Patek Philippe. Although the store sits at the luxury end of the market, the diversity of the watches available in Stockholm is seen as a positive by Daniel Moberg, CEO of Rob Engström. ‘Since wristwatches are more popular today, we see many new brands starting in the watch industry, especially in the entry price range from €100 to €500. We can thank Apple Watch and Daniel Wellington for this. These brands help to grow the interest around watches in general.’ Jonathan Stenberg, head of sales and marketing at the Rob Engström store in the centre of Stockholm, estimates that
Above (clockwise from bottom left): Rob Engström boutique and workshop; two Daniel Wellington timepieces
around 30% of clients are international visitors, depending on the season. ‘Many customers travel to Sweden because it feels safe to make their watch purchase in our shop,’ he says. Among cities with a population under five million, Stockholm was rated the fourth safest by the Economist’s Safe Cities Index 2017 and second safest in Europe behind Amsterdam, making it easy to see why the city appeals to visitors planning an expensive purchase. The market focus has changed over the past decade. ‘Much younger people buy luxury watches today, both men and women – 10 years ago, younger people tended to buy only fashion watches,’ says Stenberg. Sebastian Hill, assistant store manager of Nymans Ur 1851, another Stockholm-based luxury watch boutique, identifies a shift away from high-complication watches. ‘Today it is not necessarily a specific complication the customer Above: Nymans Ur 1851 luxury watch boutique
is looking for, it is iconic models such as the Rolex Day-Date, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, the Tank Louis Cartier and the JaegerLeCoultre Reverso,’ he says. Nymans Ur’s newly launched Rolex shop-in-shop is proving a draw for visitors both local and international, alongside its exclusive offerings from A Lange & Söhne, Audemars Piguet, Breguet, Blancpain and Vacheron Constantin. Yet while big international names and appealing savings draw customers to Nymans Ur, there is still a sense of Swedish style. ‘It is no accident that brands like IWC are so popular in Sweden,’ says Hill. ‘We tend to like the less-is-more design.’ Whether you’re looking for a budgetfriendly model that you’ve spotted on Instagram or a timepiece that will last a lifetime, it seems that Stockholm now has a horological offering to suit every customer; there’s never been a better time to buy

Womenswear brand High concentrates on practicality and beauty in everyday life. Creating pieces that are feminine and functional, designer Claire Campbell utilises quality fabrics to sculpt her designs to a model that ensures all details – such as pockets, lengths and draping – suit the fast-paced lifestyle of a working woman. For spring/ summer 2019, the collection is inspired by a Japanese garden. Campbell has not shied away from colour; expect to find bomber jackets in fuchsia pink PVC and satin, technically embroidered Japanese lotus flowers and a sportswear element introduced by tech fabrics and features such as neoprene, water-repellent camouflage and hi-vis stripes. Adam & Albin offers simple, contemporary cooking based on traditional Swedish fare, prepared using only the best ingredients. The restaurant offers two choices: the five-course Green Menu, which allows the diner to select each course individually, or the 10-course Blue Menu. If the latter is chosen, everyone at the table must partake. Intriguingly unconventional presentations include a dessert of cake disguised as an artichoke, with ‘leaves’ made of almonds. Alternatively, order a drink at the bar, where you can also enjoy a selection of dishes. A unique gastronomic concept makes Adam & Albin a must-visit.

Transforming the Industry of Watches(改变 腕 表行业)的 首字母 缩写。 Ola E Bernestål

Transforming the Industry of Watches – «Преображение часовой индустрии».

Ассортимент Nymans Ur составляют эксклюзивные предложения от A Lange & Söhne, Audemars Piguet, Breguet, Blancpain и Vacheron Constantin, а также недавно открывшийся «магазин в магазине» Rolex. Daniel Wellington
