PRECISION TIMING Inspired by the mechanics of the new Porsche 911 RSR, the latest chronograph from the team at Porsche Design Timepieces is a feat of technical excellence. The Monobloc Actuator 24h-Chronotimer, released at Baselworld 2017, is a collaboration between the Swiss watchmakers, Austrian
designers and German engineers at Porsche. Just as good at telling the time as it is at timing high-speed races, the watch features an innovative self-winding chronograph movement with a rocker switch inspired by engine valves to keep it absolutely accurate. The stopwatch function is pressure-resistant to 10 bar so you could even time a race underwater. This limited-

URBAN CHIC Taking inspiration from the city, and New York in particular, Tiffany’s new HardWear collection was inspired by a unisex bracelet that dates back to 1971. The new designs draw on industrial elements such as bolts and chains, resulting in jewellery defined by a clear utilitarian edge. Simple and bold, these Bead Triple Drop earrings (€3,050) and Bead Dangle rings (€2,200 each) in 18-carat yellow gold are striking and wonderfully versatile: pair these pieces with jeans for a casual-chic look, or with a dress for a more sophisticated outfit. grc Breuninger, Marktstrasse 1-3, 70173 Stuttgart, +49 (0)711 335 0080, tiffany.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 36

German brand Strenesse launched in 1949 with a range of tailored jackets, coats and suits for men and women. Tailoring values remain central to the Strenesse aesthetic, with each collection offering clean-cut silhouettes that are sophisticated, modern and finished with elegant details. The autumn/winter 2017/18 womenswear collection offers a range of fitted coats and two-piece suits with finishing touches such as sheepskin textured lapels or subtle check prints. Although the garments are formal and minimalist, exposed zips and chic bomber jackets add an element of sports style, keeping the collection very contemporary and enabling you to achieve a day-to-evening look with each piece. rre Strenesse, Luisenstrasse 2, 76530 Baden-Baden, +49 (0)7221 302 0038, strenesse.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 37

STEP OUT If you’re seeking contemporary, exceptionally crafted women’s footwear, look no further than Aeyde, which launched in 2015. Aeyde shoes are designed in Berlin and made in the family-run factory in Italy, where a small and dedicated team combines cutting-edge design with meticulous Italian craftsmanship and luxury materials. Aeyde’s shoes are as beautiful as they are comfortable, and always make a subtle statement that transcends seasonal trends. For autumn/winter 2017/18, Aeyde was inspired by architecture and nature. The range of boots, heels and loafer styles in patent and suede leather is available in a selection of winter-ready tones, which includes dusty pinks, rich burgundy, earth greens and beige, as well as classic grey and black. rre Bungalow, Stiftstrasse 1A, 70173 Stuttgart, +49 (0)711 220 2000, aeyde.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 36
Berlin-based Lunettes Kollektion cleverly combines modern design with an artisanal approach. The brand’s stylish eyewear is made by hand using traditional techniques at family-run factories in Italy. TURN BACK TIME Susanne Kaufmann has unveiled a new beauty formula. As the name indicates, her Anti Aging Body Cream (200ml, €142) prevents signs of skin ageing thanks to an effective combination of wild yam root extract, moth bean seeds, IBR plant complex and the patented Pro Contur active mix. Together these ingredients work to boost collagen, slow the ageing of cells and improve metabolism. Apply the cream liberally after exfoliating, wrap the area in question in foil or plastic for 30 minutes, then follow up with a gentle massage to rub in any excess product and stimulate the lymph system. This cream can be paired with the Anti Aging Body Serum for optimum results. grc

erman fashion giant Hugo Boss has long paid close attention to young designers. The annual competition it sponsors offers a prize of €3,000 shared among its winners, a useful sum for any struggling student. But what is remarkable is that Hugo Boss’s award does not go to one of the world-famous fashion design colleges such as London’s Central Saint Martins or New York’s Parsons. Rather, it goes to graduates of the less wellknown Staatliche Modeschule Stuttgart – the Stuttgart State School of Fashion Design. The 2017 Hugo Boss Fashion Awards saw a proud

The school’s entrance process is rigorous; would-be students must come prepared with basic training in clothes-making and design, and there is also an aptitude test Frauke Schühle collect the top prize for her baseball-inspired menswear collection, with the two runners-up presenting collections based on mountain biking and hiking – it must be something to do with the spectacular terrain in these parts. The graduate collections are placed on public view in the BadenWurttemberg design centre. The arrangement is, of course, a two-way street. As Wolfgang Reimer, Stuttgart district president, has noted, the awards ‘offer the graduates
interesting insights and perspectives in a well-known and international fashion company’, while the fashion company gets to spot and, sometimes, take on new talent – some 10% to 20% of graduates are hired by Hugo Boss. The relationship is a close one – Hugo Boss has been working with the Stuttgart State School of Fashion Design for some 30 years. And that is not simply related to Hugo Boss’s history – the company has
Above: Frauke Schühle’s winning designs for her baseball-inspired collection
ties to the locality, having been established in 1923 by tailor Hugo Ferdinand Boss in Metzingen, a town near Stuttgart. It also reflects the standing of the school, across Germany and, increasingly, abroad; Boss is not the only company keen to collaborate with it. Stuttgart-based contemporary jeweller Langani, which uses distinctive metal, glass and wax beads and glass figures in its necklaces and bracelets, has also teamed up with the school to feature its pieces in the
students’ final year shows and to incorporate Langani-style materials into their clothing designs. Langani’s other partners include prestigious names such as Louis Feraud. So what lies at the heart of the school’s appeal? Part of the attraction is its small scale. Each class has a maximum of 24 students, so the two years of training is personal and intense. And the entrance process is particularly rigorous. Would-be students must come to the school prepared: it’s a condition of entry that each applicant must have already had some basic training in clothes-making and design, either vocational or at an entry-level college. There’s even an aptitude test. Small wonder only around a quarter of applicants get offered a place, or that the school is Germany’s only to operate in this way. ‘To apply you need a certain creative potential, a sense of fashion and a basic technical/mathematical understanding is important too,’ explains Sabine Dirlewanger, the school’s principal. ‘It’s not just about drawing and sewing,’ she adds: students are taught business management, languages, social skills. Creativity/design is just one of the course’s pillars, the other two being the eminently industryappropriate disciplines of technical development and product management. Unusually, each student makes a garment by their second term, one of which goes into production. This Above and opposite: Street Poems, the 2017 collection from the Staatliche Modeschule Stuttgart

Students who complete the Stuttgart programme are well-equipped to tackle fashion’s many challenges may be no more complicated than a T-shirt, but the process is an in-at-thedeep-end exposure to the idea that creating clothing is about more than producing nice sketches – cutting and printing, fitting, processing, production and logistics are all necessary. ‘And we make some really good T-shirts every year,’ Dirlewanger notes. The result of completing globalblue.com
this tough course is that each student becomes, in effect, state-approved in their training. This is a great advantage, especially when seeking employment with major German fashion brands; many graduates apply for posts with companies such as Jil Sander, Escada and Joop, or up-and-coming names such as A Kind of Guise or Acronym. And that’s where Dirlewanger
likes the graduates to be: out there in the industry, rather than pursuing dreams of launching their own labels. That can come later, after they’ve got the basics in place. As she has observed, ‘Fashion is a hard and fastmoving industry.’ Students who complete the Stuttgart programme are well-equipped to tackle fashion’s challenges – and likely to stay the course

CLOSED Denim brand Closed began to achieve cult status in 1978 when its founders decided to create the first Italian denim label. Fast forward to the 1990s and the company moved to Hamburg, then in 2004 was taken over by three German friends who sought to reinvent Closed with a combination of Italian craftsmanship and German tradition. Nowadays Closed is much more than a denim label, creating several ready-to-wear collections each year for men and women. While Closed denim continues to stand the test of time, the brand’s outerwear is also a hit for autumn/winter 2017/18, with sumptuous leather and faux fur leading the charge. KVINNA Kvinna’s founder Anna Loges creates stunning handmade leather bags with the help of her mother Marion. Style fans are already familiar with the Made in Italy quality benchmark and Loges aims to put Made in Germany luxury on the fashion map. From the German tanneries where the leather is sourced to the handstitching in the Stuttgart studio, these bags are every bit a local product. For autumn/winter 2017/18 Kvinna presents drawstring bucket bags and stylish totes in chic neutral shades of black, camel and just a hint of burgundy. With an expanding list of international stockists and sell-out pieces bound to follow, there’s no better time to pick a Kvinna bag.

JAGUAR Jaguar Pace Accelerate is the invigorating new fragrance for men from the worldrenowned car manufacturer. Conceived by master perfumer Dominique Preyssas in honour of the recently launched Jaguar F-Pace family sports car, it combines heady notes of bergamot, mandarin and cardamom. The bottle is enhanced with touches of royal blue, silver and red, and embossed with a lattice inspired by Jaguar’s radiator grille.

Central globalblue.ru

41: When You Shop The World, Shop Tax Free
