TWIST AND TURN The house of Adler has been creating fine jewellery since it was founded in 1886. Today it prides itself on its avant-garde designs using precious gemstones. It has opted for an asymmetric look with its stunning series of rings called Les Singulières. Elegantly playing with lines and movement, the five styles are made in 18-carat pink or white gold and are set with a pear-shaped diamond and stones such as rubies and emeralds. The eye-catching Les Singulières designs can be worn alone but they also sit perfectly in pairs, creating a striking mirror-image effect. grc Adler, 23 rue du Rhône, 1204 Geneva, +41 (0)22 819 8026, adler.ch FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 46

PRACTICALLY PERFECT For spring/summer 2018, German leather expert MCM has created the Trisha bag. Crafted in Italy, the new bag takes inspiration from one of MCM’s most popular styles, the Patricia. The updated, cross-body Trisha bag comes in red, blue or tan suede and has rounded edging with delicate trapunto detailing. There are three different finishes; monogrammed leather, chain detail leather or ultra-soft velvety suede as pictured below (CHF975). The long strap is reminiscent of the saddle bags of the 1970s. This practical bag is a perfect accessory for city break shopping. rre MCM, Münsterhof 13, 8001 Zürich, +41 (0)44 368 1606, mcmworldwide.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 42

IN STORE: BENCI BROTHERS Founded in 2011, leather goods company Benci Brothers specialises in expertly crafted shoes and accessories for men and women. Following the opening of the brand’s new flagship store in the heart of Zürich, owner and chief executive Flaviano Bencivenga talks to Lucy Basker about tradition, individuality and offering a different kind of retail experience

‘T

raditional trade has its justification even today,’ remarks Falviano Bencivenga, owner and chief executive of Benci Brothers. ‘However, at the point of sale, we must arouse emotions and provide added value. At Benci Brothers, the focus is on quality materials and traditional craftsmanship. I think the character of a brand and its products should also be reflected in the way they are presented.’ The label’s new store in the heart of Zürich opened in September and is a true representation of its aesthetic. ‘The concept was developed by me and the Benci Brothers

team and was realised by an architect friend,’ Bencivenga says. ‘You will find a surprises in every corner; a cast-iron spiral staircase, a big wooden wall, a magnetic wall for our sneakers, illuminated images and even a Ducati.’ When Bencivenga first saw the space, he knew it was right. ‘I like corner stores the most. Decisive factors were the high ceilings and the open, light space, which gives a direct overview and allows customers to focus on the products. The atmosphere is very special. When you enter one of our stores you immediately notice the natural scent of leather and wood. The store

concept supports the products and makes the location a place you want to take your time.’ At Benci Brothers, the products will always be the focus. ‘Traditional leather craftsmanship and timeless high-quality pieces have been my passion ever since I can remember,’ says Bencivenga. His vision is clear. ‘We are aiming for continuous development of our product range; not only shoes but also small leather goods and handbags.’ But when it comes to the founder’s favourite product, there is only one choice. ‘Our casual Scrambler shoes,’ says Bencivenga. ‘They are becoming real classics.’ What is next on Bencivenga’s list? ‘Over the last few years we have optimised our three stores in Zürich; either we rebuilt them or moved them to a more suitable location. Now we would like to expand to Germany.’ Benci Brothers, Sihlstrasse 37, 8001 Zürich, +41 (0)43 497 2560, bencibrothers.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 42 globalblue.com

Time Daz to

Swiss watchmakers have been branching out ‒ exquisitely so. Some of the world’s most spectacular fine jewellery is now created in Geneva by companies with origins in horology, as Lucinda Turner discovers

S

witzerland has been the centre of luxury watchmaking for centuries and draws customers back year after year in search of the perfect timepiece. However, the nation doesn’t only offer watches. At several of Geneva’s houses renowned for horological expertise some of the most spectacular stones imaginable are being transformed into fine and high jewellery of supreme quality. One such house is Chopard. Founded in 1860 by Louis-Ulysse Chopard, the brand has created some of the finest timepieces in the world. Early clients ranged from Tsar Nicholas II of Russia to the Swiss Railways. During the 19th and early 20th centuries Chopard and precision watchmaking became synonymous. It wasn’t until the 1980s that the children of Chopard’s then owner, Karl Scheufele, decided to take a chance and add fine and high jewellery to the portfolio of this prestigious watchmaker. Caroline Scheufele, now the company’s copresident, was one of those children. Her focus on the luxury jewellery market transformed Chopard into the brand it is today. Chopard’s

57

53

54

exquisite high jewellery collection is now a cornerstone of the brand’s identity. Enduring collaborations with stars such as Rihanna, and a commitment to sustainable and ethically sourced gemstones presented in the annual Green Carpet Collection have given Chopard a global presence in the jewellery industry. It’s an incredible feat for a 158-year-old company whose jewellery business was unheard of less than 40 years ago. Another house whose origins lie in watchmaking is Piaget, which despite its horological beginnings now owns the largest jewellery workshop in all of Geneva. Thousands of precious stones are set here each year. Piaget was founded in 1874 by Georges Édouard Piaget as a classical Swiss watchmaker and it famously developed a signature, ultra-thin movement. Its journey into jewellery was a gradual one. Piaget created its very first jewellery pieces during the 1950s; in 1959 it opened its first boutique in Geneva, selling products from its newly opened jewellery factory. Amid the flamboyant Hollywood Right: Piaget international brand ambassador Jessica Chastain wearing the Verde Bisazza collection

fashions of the 1960s, the company began to experiment with increasingly colourful jewellery-watches, set with stones such as turquoise, onyx and lapis lazuli. The brand’s daring cuff watch designs of the 1970s, which blended its expertise in both jewellery making and horology, have been an inspiration to other makers across the globe. Fast-forward to the present day and Piaget’s biannual high jewellery collections, which are presented during the Paris couture shows, are awaited eagerly and continue to develop alongside the brand’s advances in the field of watchmaking. The more accessible fine jewellery collection features a broad selection of different styles, from diamond pendants to the brand’s ever-popular cocktail rings. The witty designs of the rings draw inspiration from actual cocktails, with names including Lemon Above: earrings from the Chopard Green Carpet collection

Fizz and Blueberry Daiquiri showing that these makers of spectacular jewellery have an appealing sense of humour. Another champion of fun in high jewellery is De Grisogono. A relative newcomer to the Swiss luxury market, the brand was founded in 1993 by black diamond specialist Fawaz Gruosi and, unlike houses such as Chopard and Piaget, began with stunning jewellery and progressed to timepieces as the company developed. In fact, De Grisogono’s dedication to spectacular jewellery is such that in 2017 the brand broke Christie’s auction records with its Creation 1 emerald-cut diamond necklace that achieved a price of CHF 33,500,000. However, it’s not only sizable stones that have found De Grisogono a place in the hearts of clients over the years. Colour, creativity and humour characterise its creations. From

Colourful jewels are used in extraordinary ways

the signature Crazymals collection of animalshaped cocktail rings and the understated Melone collection inspired by the namesake fruit, to the outstanding visual feast offered

in the Melody of Colours collection, De Grisogono’s pieces are created to be talked about and, most importantly, enjoyed. ‘I think in volumes, I imagine in colours, I design in lights,’ says Fawaz Gruosi. For De Grisogono it’s all about the unexpected; simple gold earrings twist and turn in unusual ways, solitaire rings are transformed by unique waves of metal encasing the stone. Colourful jewels are used in extraordinary ways throughout the brand’s watch collection, as you might expect from the avant-garde label, proving that in Switzerland the jewellery and watchmaking worlds are never far apart. In a country famous for innovative watchmaking, sumptuous chocolate and breathtaking landscapes it might be easy to overlook the evolving jewellery industry that is gently growing and quietly thriving. Yet once you discover some of the striking pieces on offer you’ll be impressed and dazzled by this area of Swiss expertise

High in Switzerland’s stunning mountain ranges there’s an impressive choice of restaurants serving world-class food, as Ruairidh Pritchard discovers

Switzerland is home to some of the most picturesque mountain ranges in Europe and its highest summits are more than 3,000 metres above sea level. With two main ranges, the Swiss Alps to the south and east and the Jura mountains to the north and west, the country is almost surrounded by soaring peaks. Given this wonderful scenery, skiing in Switzerland is as much a national pastime as it is a sport. As a result, the Swiss frequently indulge in a spot of après-ski at high altitude. So it’s no surprise that the country’s mountain ranges are endowed with some world-class restaurants. There’s a rich array of options. You could choose to eat at a stylish cabin serving warming and adventurous dishes, or at a restaurant with 360° views of some of the country’s most beautiful peaks. Alternatively, head to a rustic-looking chalet for one of the most enviable wine lists in Switzerland. Or enjoy a thoroughly modern eco-friendly restaurant with breathtaking panoramas. Wherever you decide to dine, Switzerland’s mountain-top restaurant options are bound to enhance a trip to this beautiful country. globalblue.com

EL PARADISO Located on the outer edge of the Suvretta-Corviglia ski resort at St Moritz, El Paradiso enjoys an altitude of 2,181 metres and promises to bring guests a little ‘closer to heaven’. The self-styled mountain clubhouse is one of the region’s coolest hangouts and offers a nightclub and a restaurant. Its large terrace presents stunning mountain views and is popular with guests seeking an al fresco lunch. The more intimate cabin restaurant upstairs offers an authentically alpine dining experience. The menu presents a wide variety of options, from tapas-style sharing platters to substantial threecourse feasts. The standout dish here is homemade lobster ravioli, complete with pan-fried lobster and caviar. It is the perfect evening indulgence after a day of mountain adventures. It even rotates around its own axis every 45 minutes, offering visitors 360° views of the surrounding mountains. If the location and rotation weren’t reason enough to visit, the restaurant also has connections to one of the world’s most famous spies; scenes from the 1969 James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service were shot here. Restaurant Piz Gloria, Schilthorn, 3825 Mürren, +41 (0)33 826 0007, schilthorn.ch

CHEZ VRONY Chez Vrony is the perfect example of contemporary alpine style. Set 2,100 metres above sea level in the mountain resort of Zermatt, this rustic-looking ski chalet houses one of the area’s most authentic Swiss restaurants. Dishes range from tarte flambée with winter truffle, air-dried bacon, red onion and herbs, to unusual and delicious Bloody Mary soup with spicy lamb chorizo and basil froth. Dining al fresco here is a must; the restaurant’s terrace is supplied with furry throws, thick blankets and oversized cushions, creating the perfect setting to enjoy a bottle from the extensive wine list. Chez Vrony, Findeln, 3920 Zermatt, +41 (0)27 967 2552, chezvrony.ch globalblue.com

CHETZERON At 2,112 metres above sea level, Chetzeron hotel overlooks Switzerland’s beautiful Rhone Valley and offers unobstructured views over the Alps, from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc. The eco-friendly building has been designed to preserve and protect the environment, and it houses one of the area’s most stunning restaurants. With dishes lovingly created from local and seasonal produce, the menu focuses on sophisticated alpine cuisine. Favourites include goat cheese and Swiss chard cannelloni with alpine broth, rack of alpine lamb with mashed winter vegetables, and beef tenderloin with shallot sauce. For superb panoramas, opt to have your meal on the restaurant’s terrace. Chetzeron, 2112 rue de Chetzeron, 3963 Crans-Montana, +41 (0)27 485 0800, chetzeron.com

Global Blue’s guide ensures you make the most of your trip to Switzerland with a look at the country’s must-visit destinations. LES AVIATEURS Swiss watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen has opened a bar in partnership with luxury store Globus. It is called Les Aviateurs in reference to the brand’s Pilot’s Watch range and is located beside the watchmaker’s Geneva boutique on rue du Rhône. The space has the feel of a gentlemen’s club of the 1920s and 30s, with dark wood and leather design features. It is

the perfect place to enjoy a refreshing drink after visiting the IWC Schaffhausen shop – we recommend one of the cocktails inspired by the Pilot’s Watch collection. Les Aviateurs, 48 rue du Rhône, 1204 Geneva, iwc.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 46

32: TIME TO DAZZLE
