Creative director Sandra Choi plays with animal prints in a modern way: vibrant embossed croc leather appears on bags and shoes; snakes adorn buckles and handles; leopard print is rendered in pony skin. Its first appearance for the label dates back to 1914 when Louis Cartier commissioned George Barbier to create the illustration Lady with a Panther. Over time, the French maison’s iterations of the panther motif have included timepieces, jewellery and perfumes. The strap’s texture is carried through to the pattern on the bezel, further reinforcing the idea of textile fabric. The crown is set with diamonds. This year two German brands ‒ Mykita and Leica ‒ join forces in a partnership that kicks off with a collection of sunglasses, launching in June. The eyewear specialist and camera manufacturer are both engineering experts in their own fields and they bring their know-how to the debut collection of sun lenses with optical grade quality. The sunglasses are designed in Munich, where Leica has its design studio, before being made at Mykita Haus in Berlin. Choose from stainless steel designs or ones that combine stainless steel with a material developed by Mykita called Mylon, which is made using 3D printing technology. he Swiss Alps, so spectacular from the air, so humbling from the ground, are a playground for those who like to walk, climb or snowboard. Many follow the Alpinwanderwege, routes marked by blue and white signs, often with no clear path. These cross tough terrain and require not just surefootedness, a head for heights, a map and a compass, but also serious kit. By which we don’t just mean the famed Swiss Army knife. There’s an impressive range of global brand names for outdoor pursuits. But Switzerland also has a number of home-grown labels, often largely catering to the domestic market and something of an insider secret for those especially keen on the great outdoors. Take Mammut, for example. The company sponsors its own climbing pro team ‒ which

in September 2019 saw Dani Arnold set a new speed record for his free climb of the Cima Grande. Mammut dates back to 1862 and made its name producing professional climbing equipment. It began creating clothing in the 1970s, establishing a signature blue and orange colour scheme and introducing shimmering metallics in its 2019 Delta X Urbaneering line. Its sleeping bags were developed not just for warmth and comfort, but with a noise-reducing lining. Today, such Swiss outdoors brands typically offer a characterful take on clothes that work in extreme weather. Alprausch was founded in Switzerland in 2001 by snowboarder Andy Tanner, and has expanded rapidly, with stockists in Austria, Germany, France, Italy and more. It has become

something of a fixture at the more offbeat events across the region, from the vintage snowmobile meet-up at Flims ski resort, to Red Bull’s Alpenbrevet moped race through the Swiss Alps and Stuben’s annual Longboard Classic snowboarding event. That suits its aesthetic: classic puffers, down vests, fleeces and heavyweight hoodies, but with embroidery detail, retro trims and quirky graphics, mixing snow wear with streetwear ‒ and with the Swiss cross in its logo. ‘When we started there was a lot of streetwear and snowboard clothing but everything was totally American,’ Tanner told Swiss newspaper Tagblatt. In Europe, he explained, ‘we have different demands, a different style. The European is more critical, more demanding. Swissness only works if it’s
done subtly.’ He added that there’s a trace of romance in the Alprausch collections, ‘but we interpret it in a very modern and graphic way’. Looking as though you’re about to follow in the footsteps of Hillary and Tenzing has achieved a certain fashionability over recent years. That has helped propel the North Face and Patagonia out of the US, Rab out of the UK, Fjällräven out of Sweden, and Jack Wolfskin out of Germany, and they’ve become global brands worn as much for a weekend walk as for sporting outdoorsiness. But what makes such clothing worth choosing over the many fashion-brand versions that offer the same look? In a word, substance. Behind the products of brands such as Mammut and Alprausch lies design for purpose: for example, the use of technical

Swiss outdoors brands offer a characterful take on clothes for extreme weather
fabrics that are windproof and waterproof but which also allow body moisture to wick away (crucial for wearers who may not easily be able to remove and stow their outer layer). Such fabrics may also be fast drying ‒ important when this is the only coat you have and there are many miles to go to home. Padding may offer warmth, but in a way that’s super lightweight. Mammut’s Kento hooded jacket, for instance, one of its more recent launches, combines polyurethane, woven polyamide ripstop and the company’s own DryTechnology fabric to create one of the most advanced outerwear garments on the market. Such considerations aren’t just for outerwear. Among Switzerland’s better known, but no less specialist, brands is Isa Bodywear, dating from 1849 and now a seventh-generation family firm. Isa likes to incorporate as much Swissness as possible into its products, with design and development, material production and some 40% of the manufacturing taking place in the country. long-sleeved undershirts and long johns ‒ in wool or more high-tech ‘clima control’ fabrics, the ideal starting point in dressing for the piste, a climb or a trek. Isa even makes men’s underwear designed to protect the wearer against radiation from mobile phones. ‘Undergarments have to work for all situations in life,’ Isa CEO Andreas Sallmann said in an interview with Luzerner Zeitung. ‘We attach great importance to a good fit. You need excellent fabric quality, which is why we knit the fabrics ourselves.’ He pointed out that while the designs of Isa’s cotton classics, which are 60 years old, are still in demand, ‘we need to impress with technical cuts and innovative materials such as Tencel. We also use Modal, Meryl, Tactel, Trevira ...’ In other words, the best modern fabrics that help to make a piece of clothing functional as well as good looking. For most people, of course, this performance factor will be more than they need in their day-to-day lives.
