PERFECTLY PETITE Just 18cm long, 12cm deep and 4cm wide, the Petite Malle bag by Louis Vuitton nonetheless packs a powerful punch. Paying tribute to the maison’s 160-year heritage as a trunkmaker, Nicolas Ghesquière designed the bag to meet the practical needs of fashionable women everywhere. Ghesquière has said that a small bag for daytime use can be both cool and functional, and proves it with this model. The miniature trunk also showcases Vuitton’s impressive craftsmanship. Ghesquière was inspired in particular by the custom-made Save up to 15% by shopping tax free, see page 43
leather trunks created between 1911 and 1929 for photographer, banker and world traveller Albert Kahn – the three crosses on the front of the bag were Kahn’s distinctive signature. Each bag’s black leather strap is detachable, to convert the crossbody style ideal for daytime use into an evening clutch. Lightweight, modern and beautifully crafted, this bag’s petite proportions belie its practicality. th Louis Vuitton Petite Malle Epi bag, €3,700, Louis Vuitton, Tuchlauben 3-7, 1010 Vienna, +43 (0)1 533 6151, louisvuitton.com * for map go to page 42

The two-storey boutique, located in Vienna’s Golden Quarter, is the result of a collaboration between the brand’s creative director Sarah Burton and David Collins Studio. Spread over 150 square metres, the shop carries the complete catwalk, commercial and accessories collections for both men and women. Clients can also purchase iconic McQueen pieces such Save up to 15% by shopping tax free, see page 43

IMMEDIATE SUCCESS Asked about the diferences between her two labels, Miuccia Prada was clear: Miu Miu is ‘immediate’, she said, while Prada is ‘thought out’. The designer added that, when working on Miu Miu, if she had to think three times, she stopped. This spontaneity is one of Miu Miu’s strengths. The collection that closed the spring/summer 2015 Paris Fashion Week was inspired by the 1960s and 70s and was a masterclass in subversion. Bucol couture fabric took the place of polyester in the housecoats sent down the catwalk. Elsewhere, an abundance of pinks and rufes served as a counterpoint to bad-girl crop tops and platform heels. There is something about Miu Miu that never fails to excite the imagination. th Miu Miu, Tuchlauben 7, 1010 Vienna, +43 (0)1 532 3053, miumiu.com * for map go to page 42
Since Hedi Slimane’s appointment as creative director of Saint Laurent in 2012, the label has become one of the most directional in men’s fashion. This season’s collection features the rocky and retro-inspired menswear which is becoming the brand’s signature. At the label’s spring/summer 2015 show in Paris, long-haired models sauntered down the catwalk in Saint Laurent’s trademark drainpipe skinny jeans, paired with military-inspired jackets with gold-thread embroidery. Patchwork ponchos and fowing kaftans joined fringed suede and wide-brimmed hats in adding an androgynous edge to an altogether bohemian collection. rp Saint Laurent, Bognergasse 4, 1010 Vienna, +43 (0)1 535 0350, ysl.com * for map go to page 42 Save up to 15% by shopping tax free, see page 43

NATURALLY DESIRABLE Christopher Bailey’s spring/summer 2015 collection for Burberry Prorsum was entitled the Birds and the Bees. Despite the va-va-voom curves of the models and the sheerness of the fabrics, Bailey insisted he wasn’t referencing anything more risqué than a summer’s day in the English countryside. Alongside practical shoes such as fat sandals and trainers, the show featured a welcome selection of wearable pieces. Pencil skirts covered in circular scales hugged the hips, while a nipped-in denim jacket emphasised the waist. All in all, this was Burberry at its most accessible, a collection well worth buying into. th Burberry, Kohlmarkt 2, 1010 Vienna, +43 (0)1 532 2820, burberry.com * for map go to page 42

Every European city worth its salt has a truly luxurious area in which to shop; a few streets (usually cobbled) that are magnets for those looking for the very best in life. Paris has the Champs-Élysées, of course, a tree-lined boulevard in the eighth arrondissement; London has bustling Bond Street and, for those in the know, the more discreet and exclusive Mount Street, tucked away in a village-like corner of Mayfair. And Vienna has the Goldenes Quartier, or Golden Quarter, in the heart of the city’s First District, which is a listed Unesco World Heritage Site. An extensive expansion of the district was completed in late 2014. The refurbished area between St Stephen’s Cathedral and the Stock Exchange is in the most historic part of Vienna. It includes a century-old building located in Am Hof square as well as the Hochholzerhof building in the Tuchlauben area. The Golden Quarter takes in elegant Kohlmarkt, one of the oldest streets in Vienna, and a great deal more retail space surrounding it: 8,500 square metres on adjacent Previous page: Vienna’s Golden Quarter

Tuchlauben; and 3,000 square metres at nearby Am Hof. It is close to luxury accommodation, including the recently opened fve-star Park Hyatt hotel, and to the renowned Julius Meinl market. And this combination has attracted some of the world’s most impressive fashion houses, which have established branches in the historic buildings here. ‘The neighbourhood is not a shopping centre, but a high-quality urban quarter in the heart of Vienna,’ says Christoph Stadlhuber, managing director of Signa Holdings, which has developed several luxury apartments in the district. The entire area from Bognergasse and Seitzergasse to ancient Am Hof square has been pedestrianised, and the Golden Quarter has become a fashion haven for the well-heeled. As they browse the shops they soak up the historic ambience for which Vienna is famous. Located to the east of Michaelertor, which dates back to the 1720s and is one of the most opulent wings of the imperial palace, the new shopping district is awash with elegant,

baroque-style architecture. The grandeur and famboyance make an ideal setting for some of the world’s most exclusive brands including Prada, Alexander McQueen, Armani and Chanel. Kohlmarkt was once home to Vienna’s most famous musical exports, Haydn and Chopin, and it was where the royal court’s jewellers were located. Today it plays host to some of the world’s most exclusive jewellery houses, including Tifany and Cartier. Stroll along the main street of Bognergasse and you will see Italian imports Brunello Cucinelli and Prada, which are set next to the substantial fagship store of French powerhouse Saint Laurent. Or take a turn down Tuchlauben and you’ll pass the imposing fagship of Louis Vuitton, which has commandeered one of the most historic buildings in the city. Alongside it you’ll fnd Miu Miu and Valentino. Vivienne Westwood’s Golden Quarter boutique is the brand’s only store outside London to ofer couture alongside a mix of accessories and ready-to-wear. ‘Vienna is such a wonderful city, with fantastic museums,’ says Brigitte Stepputtis, head of couture at Vivienne Westwood. ‘Events such as the Opera Ball and the Life Ball, and performances by Vienna State Ballet add to the richness of this historic city. So it is the perfect place to house our Vivienne Westwood Couture and Red Carpet collections. And Vivienne’s husband and design partner, Andreas Kronthaler, is Tyrolean so we have a personal connection with this Austrian city.’ The spring/summer 2015 collections and other investment pieces from these high-octane fashion houses dominate the area, but the Golden Quarter also boasts an array of younger, more contemporary designers. It’s a mix that works well. Venture of the main streets to fnd some highly covetable pieces from brands such as Comme des Garçons, Tsumori Chisato, Yohji Yamamoto, Y-3 and Junya Watanabe. It’s a far cry from the dirndl skirts and white blouses of the city’s past. Mixing the old and the new? It’s what Vienna does best goldenesquartier.com

30: The Golden Age

goldenesquartier.com
