STEP INTO SUMMER Low heels are big news this summer, as these delights from Jimmy Choo prove. The sheer mesh fabric will keep your feet cool in the summer heat, while the embroidered star fowers and the patent toe and trim make an eye-catching statement while adding structure. Go all out and clash them with a foral sundress, or use them to add a splash of colour to a chic ensemble of skinny jeans and T-shirt. DARK ARTS When Marc Jacobs presented his fnal collection for Louis Vuitton after 16 years with the fashion house, he brought together all of his most spectacular past set pieces, reimagined in lacquered black, to create a giant interactive catwalk. Despite the darkness, the mood was ferce rather than funereal. Model of the moment Edie Campbell opened the show, decked out in sequins, her body painted with Jacob’s iconic Louis Vuitton Paris print. The collection mixed gothic opulence with punk attitude. Elegant jet-black pieces with glittering and feathered embellishments were mixed with stonewashed denim and peek-a-boo chifon. Models strutted across the foor, which was covered in luxuriant navy lambskin, like macabre Vegas showgirls with fantastical feather headdresses and angular black eyebrows. If nothing else, the show proves that Jacobs, like the colour black, will never go out of style. ib Louis Vuitton, Goethestrasse 13, 60313 Frankfurt, +49 (0)69 280010, louisvuitton.com * for map go to page 79

THE GREAT OUTDOORS One of Europe’s leading functional outdoor apparel brands, Jack Wolfskin stands out for two key reasons. First, the brand is committed to responsible manufacturing and limiting its environmental footprint. Second, Jack Wolfskin brings a level of style to outdoor clothing that many brands don’t achieve. International fashion houses are catering for the business leaders who start the day in Seoul and end it in Mumbai – and want to make the journey in style, with pieces that work for them, not against them. With this in mind, British sartorial stalwart Burberry recently launched its frst Travel Tailoring collection, with a strong focus on efortless, gentlemanly style. The collection consists of the signature Burberry slim-ft suit, constructed from the brand’s ground-breaking new lightweight fabrics. The collection allows increased movement and comfort, a boon for those travelling long haul, while losing nothing of the structure and silhouette you would expect from a well-tailored suit. The key features of the new collection are found in the details of the suits’ construction – the chest canvas and shoulders contain no wadding and fewer layers than usual, while

all fabrics are naturally fexible, using a mix of fne merino wools which helps to reduce creasing and wrinkling. Production methods also help to create added stretch and fexibility; yarns are woven in a spring-like structure on an extra-large loom, ensuring the cloth doesn’t slacken in areas of stress, such as the elbows and knees. The Travel Tailoring collection’s combination of fexibility, comfort, structure and style means Burberry has created an essential for the modern traveller. While suiting may be the frst thing many consider when packing for business, it’s often

the smaller details that distinguish a stylish globe traveller. For over a century, French fashion house Louis Vuitton has been creating luxury travel trunks and cases for those who truly understand the meaning of luxury travel. More recently the brand has expanded its range to include business travel bags that are not only stylish, but also functional. Made in Vuitton’s signature monogrammed leather and damier canvas, the label’s collection of business bags ranges from smaller document bags to protective laptop cases and traditional, trunk-like suitcases. Made with the classic French craftsmanship and attention to detail Vuitton is famous for, the collection combines versatility, functionality and elegance, elevating the business bag to an essential and stylish travel companion. wardrobe. A classic watch has traditionally been the signature of a well-heeled entrepreneur and today, modern technology and advances in horology are meeting the needs of those who traverse multiple time zones in a day. The Rolex GMT Master II was developed in collaboration with Pan American World Airways and has been pilots’ watch of choice since it was released in the 1950s. Also a favourite of NASA astronauts, it is ideal wristwear for intrepid travellers. In addition to conventional hour, minute and second hands, the GMT Master II features an arrow-tipped hand which circles the dial once every 24 hours, as well as a bi-directional, rotatable 24-hour graduated bezel. Wearers can keep track of the time in their home country while adapting to a new time zone. The watch’s ground-breaking functionality has gained it fans across the globe, as has

its sleek design, with a choice of coloured bezels and metal fnishes. The GMT Master II is not only an excellent precision timepiece but also a strong style statement. Personal luxuries are also part of international businessman style, with luxury fountain pens seeing a revival on businessminded men’s lists of most-wanted items. While vintage fountain pens are enjoying a resurgence at auction, today’s modern models aren’t to be dismissed. Made with the same attention to detail as fne jewellery, fountain pens are being produced by some of the fnest global brands, including Dunhill, Montegrappa and

NEW Retail in Frankfurt is being revitalised by a variety of witty, ingenious concept stores. Sally McIlhone reveals some of the best

PHOTO: © NiNa Siber

CONCEPTS The rise and rise of online shopping has made global brands and independent boutiques alike recognise the need to provide clients with a richer experience to entice them into brick-and-mortar stores. Frankfurt retailers are rising to the challenge and are setting out not just to draw visitors into their shops, but also to encourage customers to spend time and connect with the products within, by ofering everything from talks to theatre in inventive spaces dedicated to championing new design. There’s even a shop laid out like an impeccably furnished apartment. For visitors seeking some of the most exciting concept stores in Germany, Frankfurt is sure to surprise. Colekt on Brückenstrasse is one such distinctive concept store. Founded by architect Petra Wagner and graphic designer Stephanie Keidel, who are united by their love of great design, the store ofers a unique selection of furniture and products from around the world.

‘We both missed a cool shop in Frankfurt where you can fnd special things, meet nice people, come around for a cup of cofee, get inspired. It was a dream to open up this kind of shop,’ Wagner and Keidel explain. Colekt hosts regular events, from workshops to concerts, and even has its own kitchen, which serves vegetarian meals every Thursday. Wagner and Keidel believe these experiences add value to their customers’ shopping experiences. ‘The stories behind the things we sell, their designers and how and where they are produced, are very important to us. Having a cup of cofee or a special event, a tasting or a lecture, we can tell these stories much more easily. This is what’s so diferent from online shopping. You can feel, smell, taste, talk to real people!’ Susanne Stahl from the Designe, Kleine! concept store on Wallstrasse also believes in ofering visitors and local product designers something a little diferent. In her store, Lef: Colekt boutique

Product mix, atmosphere and entertainment make concept stores distinctive and appealing

Another concept store with specialised beauty knowledge is Lieblings on Stephanstrasse. The boutique stocks a diverse selection of products, from menswear and womenswear to fowers and chocolates, alongside an elite range of cosmetics. ‘One of the founders has worked as a make-up artist for companies like Calvin Klein and Lagerfeld, so he has built a network of creative people who help him to discover new things

creatives can rent out space to promote their handmade items. ‘It was originally designed as an experiment but it developed into a real company,’ Stahl explains. ‘Since 2006, diferent people have rented one of the 50 display boxes at Designe, Kleine! to showcase their wares for a monthly fee. The product line shows handmade giftware, jewellery, accessories and Frankfurt souvenirs.’ The store doesn’t even need to be open for a handmade souvenir to be purchased. A vending machine in front of the shop dispenses ‘surprise boxes’ for €3, 24 hours a day. From the quirky to the polished, Frankfurt also ofers concept stores for the beauty fanatic. One of Germany’s best-loved beauty brands, Être Belle, recently opened a concept store in the city’s new Skyline Plaza shopping centre. Christian Unger, Être Belle’s managing director, explains the rationale behind the store: ‘The objective was to create a platform for beauty lovers to play and experience new and exciting products and services. The concept combines on-site testing and beauty consulting, luxurious facial and body treatments, as well as an extensive product ofering.’

54 | F E AT U R E S

besides the mainstream,’ explains Lars-Oliver Hergeth, managing director of the store, who attributes Lieblings’ success to its product mix and relaxing atmosphere. Hergeth believes that Lieblings and other concept stores around the world must ofer something distinctive to diferentiate themselves from online stores; brick-and-mortar stores have to ofer entertainment, he says, or they are ‘lost’. ‘This is the only way to compete with fast-growing internet retailers.’

Visitors seeking some of the most exciting concept stores in Germany will find them in Frankfurt

One of Frankfurt’s most ingenious concept stores is 2nd Home on Vogelsbergstrasse, owned by Susanne Theissen. The store is designed to look like an upmarket apartment, but everything is for sale, from the furniture to the paintings on display. ‘The idea came because me and my ex-partner moved four times in one year and every time we renovated the apartments. They looked very shabby at the beginning and at the end there were some highlights.’ After some friends noted Theissen’s eye for interior design and asked her to help them rejuvenate their homes, the idea for her own store began to germinate. ‘The concept was made,’ she recalls. ‘An apartment where you can buy everything.’ Why did she choose Frankfurt rather than, perhaps, the creative hub of Berlin? ‘I love the area where I live. It is better to create something nice than to complain about what does not exist where you live.’ We wholeheartedly agree colekt.me, designe-kleine.de, etre-belle.de, lieblings.de, 2nd-home.net Above (from top): 2nd Home boutique; Lieblings boutique

Internationally renowned German porcelain brand Meissen is turning its attention to the catwalk. Isabella Redmond Styles investigates

The link between porcelain and beautifully made clothing might not seem obvious but, for Meissen, there’s a clear connection. Established in 1710 as Europe’s frst porcelain manufactory, the German company has a 300-year reputation for its commitment to superb quality, painstaking workmanship and timeless style, all traits that one would also fnd in the most prestigious Parisian couture houses. Meissen’s new bespoke clothing line, which launches this season, thus seems like a perfectly natural progression for one of Germany’s top luxury houses which already produces collections of porcelain art, fne jewellery and homeware. The new line draws heavily on the brand’s illustrious history. Founded at the request of Augustus the Strong, Elector Prince of Saxony and King of Poland, Meissen began as a porcelain factory in the German town of the same name at the imposing Albrechtsburg castle. Since its inception Meissen has been known for producing only the fnest quality products from the best raw materials and the Meissen factory even has its own inhouse pit where kaolin (china clay), used for making porcelain, can be excavated. Meissen’s manufacturing approach is dedicated and diligent, the refnement process required for the materials takes several months and every stage of the production process is carefully supervised. What’s more, Meissen’s painters and modellers undergo a minimum of three years training (and many train for a lot longer

than that) in order to reach the standard that Meissen’s delicate handmade pieces require. It’s little wonder, then, that the brand has such a longstanding association with quality, style and lasting value. Throughout its three centuries, the company has continued to expand its reach, launching several diverse but equally successful lines. Continuing its tradition of historic porcelain, the company produces an exclusive Fine Art collection of limited-edition fgurative porcelain pieces, as well as the ArtCampus range, which includes one-of pieces made in collaboration with contemporary artists. Also inspired by the company’s rich history is the Meissen Joaillerie line, a much coveted jewellery and watch range, as are the Meissen Home and Meissen Home Deco selections of furniture, homeware, tableware and decorative objects. The brand also continues to cater for royalty and notable individuals with the Meissen Individuell custom and bespoke service. Meissen’s royal clients will no doubt also be delighted by the debut fashion collection, which was presented at Milan’s September 2013 Fashion Week in the elegant surroundings of the courtyard of Villa Meissen in Milan. Meissen CEO Christian Kurtzke and Franca Sozzani, the editorin-chief of Vogue Italia, welcomed a host of guests that included journalists, buyers and Previous page: Cecilia dress, Meissen Couture spring/summer 2014

VIPs to the presentation. Drawing on the company’s history, Meissen’s chief designer Frida Weyer created 17 looks inspired by drawings and fgurines from the Meissen archives. Each piece was original yet classic, demonstrating the house’s talent for exquisite detailing and refecting Meissen’s long history of craftsmanship. The collection is made up of evening, bridal and cocktail dresses, described by Weyer as ‘timelessly elegant,

The modern romance and intricate craftsmanship of Meissen’s bespoke collection are certain to attract buyers across the world feminine, graceful and with a touch of romantic luxuriance.’ Any piece from the new collection certainly wouldn’t look out of place at a state banquet or society wedding. Working with silk organza and shimmering silks, Weyer created dramatic silhouettes which, when juxtaposed with modern foral embroidery and intricate lacework, provided a fresh appeal. Details like the three-dimensional foral embroidery which appears on several pieces in the collection might seem like an entirely modern touch but are actually rooted in Meissen’s 18th-century chinoiserie and snowball-blossom appliqués, as well as the company’s foral designs from the 19th and 20th centuries. Flourishes of pearls and crystal demonstrate the level of artistry that would be expected from Meissen and the attention to detail rivals that of many established couture houses. Highlights include the vibrant silk organza Cecilia and Sissi gowns, likely to soon to be seen on a frst lady or two. CEO Christian Kurtzke explains that Meissen is looking forward to the future. ‘Now the goal is to further intensify our numerous international contacts to the top buyers of the important luxury department stores and develop the distribution of our new brand world.’ Fortunately for this ambition, the modern romance of the Chloe and Rosy dresses are certain to attract buyers worldwide, while the intricate craftsmanship demonstrated on the Grace and Olivia dresses, which feature hundreds of hand-embroidered 3D laser-cut blossoms and leaves, show that Meissen means business when it comes to its fashion foray.

PHOTO: DANMEDHURST.COM

И мы полностью с этим согласны. colekt.me, designe-kleine.de, etre-belle.de, lieblings.de, 2nd-home.net 56: Perfect Pieces

burberry.com, louisvuitton.com, rolex.com, zegna.com

colekt.me, designe-kleine.de, etre-belle.de, lieblings.de, 2nd-home.net

M e i s s e n

meissen.com
