FUNKY FRENDS Forget about bags and shoes, the must-have accessory this season is a pair of headphones. Frends has made technology very chic and has transformed the humble headphone into a handcrafted item of exceptional sound quality and style. Seen on the heads of many of fashion’s tastemakers, these Frends headphones are resilient and feature materials more commonly associated with luxury goods, such as super-soft leather and rose gold. irs Macforum, Östra Hamngatan 16, 411 09 Gothenburg, +46 (0)31 721 3110, wearefrends.com * for map go to page 40
SUMMER STYLE Emma och Malena’s new collection takes inspiration from Swedish summer life. A carefree girl on a pier with an ice cream in her hand was the vision behind the playful range. Nature and the archipelago have an important role in the label’s designs: this season, foral and seashore prints are combined with the 1950s silhouettes for which the brand is known. gl Emma och Malena, Vallgatan 4, 411 16 Gothenburg, +46 (0)31 775 0166, emmamalena.com * for map go to page 40 Save up to 19% by shopping tax free, see page 46

GIRLS AND BOYS Scandinavian brand Weekday is no stranger to conceptual thinking, and its latest capsule collection is the most radical to date. JEANS DREAM Swedish jeans are among the best in the world, with cut, ft and quality being paramount for the denim-loving Swedes. LIVELY TIME Triwa brings a touch of irreverence to the traditional world of watchmaking. The Swedish brand’s name is an acronym for Transforming the Industry of Watches, and its designs are playful and contemporary while its products are very well made. NATURE’S BOUNTY
Sweden’s up-and-coming beauty brands ofer a healthy, glowing look that refects the Swedish love of nature. Katy Young reports 48

Swedish beauty companies wear their heritage on their (immaculately pristine) sleeves. A characteristically Scandinavian, clean and considered beauty philosophy lies at the heart of Swedish makeup, skincare and perfume labels. Skincare and fragrance company Björk & Berries has made it part of its vision to embrace Scandina-
vian design elements. The brand says that it wants to ‘take the Swedish traditions within the beauty industry to a global audience and develop new, modern and cutting-edge eco-luxury ranges for the future, with exclusive and efective products that are steeped in Swedish nature, beauty and design’.

Flying the Swedish fag is something these brands like to shout about too. ‘We are of course very proud of being a successful Swedish cosmetics brand that has been able to establish abroad,’ explains Mika Liias, founder of Make Up Store. Fellow make-up brand Face Stockholm is equally intent on keeping its Swedish DNA and personality alive and kicking – one of the reasons it does all its product development and marketing in-house. Such principles are resonating with the rest of the world too. Björk & Berries, Make Up Store and Face Stockholm have all expanded into international markets in recent years, after establishing hugely successful beginnings in their home country. Another distinctly Swedish label is Emma S, a skincare brand set up by former model Emma Wiklund (née Sjöberg).
So what are the underlying Swedish beauty traditions? According to Björk & Berries ‘tough conditions that we Scandinavians have due to our climate are how our beauty routines have developed historically’; for example, there’s no point blow-drying your hair to perfection only to go out into a snowstorm. ‘We have to be strong and healthy to look good during these conditions. The Scandinavian talent for design is reflected in the products from its beauty brands
the defnition of natural beauty.’ So it fgures that skincare and make-up products that are made in Sweden aim to help wearers achieve perfect complexions, and that these are becoming the country’s biggest beauty export. Face Stockholm and Make Up Store ofer an easy way to achieve that healthy, glowing complexion. Bright single pots of shadow, blush and lip colour,
as well as good bases, invite you to get creative with cosmetics. Make Up Store has made it even easier, with in-store make-up artists on hand to help customers. Successful Swedish beauty brands are all driven by quality and, where possible, eco-luxury. And, as Liias explains, good value, which the Swedes naturally expect. Liias had the idea of setting up his own make-up brand after noticing that students at the makeup school he had established were seeking high-quality products at afordable prices. ‘The make-up artist’s demand for fawless, quality make-up inspired me to strive to develop a brand that could ofer them just what they were looking for,’ he says. There’s also often an ethical element to Swedish brands. Björk & Berries describes itself as ‘an eco-luxury beauty brand

derived from Swedish nature and traditions’. Its unisex White Forest fragrance blends wood and fresh forest air, and its skincare products are based on organic Swedish birch extract, which hydrates, tones and frms skin. Its Green & Clean and Lingonberry Rose products sound as though they’d be at home in a Swedish forest. The brand is trying to give back something to the traditions it borrows from; it is located in Gävle, where there were four factories that made perfumes and soaps in the 19th century, and hopes to revive the beauty industry in the region. The Scandinavian talent for design is refected in the products from its beauty brands, which are presented in aesthetically simple but always pleasing packaging. Ac-
cording to Björk & Berries, ‘A mystical landscape and a deep sense of longing have resulted in a sensitive approach to art and design.’ Cities such as Paris and London might dominate the beauty landscape, but Sweden is quietly proving that its own beauty labels can lend a unique spin to cosmetics bjorkandberries.com, makeupstore.se, facestockholm.com, emmas.com

‘Gustaf Adolfs Torg is situated in the heart of the city and is dominated by a large bronze statue of Gothenburg’s founder, Gustaf II Adolf. The square boasts some of the city’s most impressive architecture – I spent a great deal of time admiring the different styles refected in the surrounding administrative buildings which date back to 1673.’
‘As a fan of retro fashion I was keen to explore Gothenburg’s vintage shopping scene. One of the city’s fnest vintage shops, Pop Boutique, has an eclectic collection of vintage fashion as well as its own retro-inspired pieces. the bold, bright prints of Marimekko are instantly recognisable and the brand’s Gothenburg boutique certainly stands out from the crowd. the Finnish label unites the design aesthetics of east and west, combining the clarity and functionality of Scandinavian design with the emotive embellishment of the Far east. expect to fnd a riot of colour in the store, with home furnishing fabrics, tableware, clothing, bags and other accessories in Marimekko’s signature style.

MY CITY: Per Andersson Per Andersson founded the Gothenburg clothing label Velour by Nostalgi. Here, he shares his insider tips for the city with Gemma Latham
‘I’ve lived in Gothenburg since 1991 and what I like best about it is that it has such a great DIY ethic among young creative people. Långgatorna, the area around our showroom, is a creative spot with interesting stores, bars and restaurants. I like Lester * p.40 shoe store, located on Södra Larmgatan as it has a great variety of men’s shoes. ‘We redecorated our Velour by Nostalgi store * p.41 on Magasinsgatan last year. The idea was to create a shop with a personality strong enough to match the area and its history. The house where the store is located dates back to the early 1800s, with a fascinating roof structure and a really lovely exterior. ‘Don’t forget to visit Feskekörka * p.37 as this fsh market is the gathering place for
all who appreciate Sweden’s wide range of fresh fsh and seafood. ‘For food I go to Familjen or to Dozo for sushi on a Friday, and on a Saturday to Thörnströms Kök for something luxurious. For special occasions I like to go to Champagne Baren in the Magasinsgatan area to celebrate. The best beer in town is from Poppels microbrewery. ‘When I’m at our Gothenburg store I go to Da Matteo * p.40 for my cofee, which has its own roasting house. ‘When friends visit, I’ll take them out on a boat to the islands, to see the fantastic scenery. In the evening we’ll go to a concert at Pustervik and end up at Yaki Da restaurant. I might book tickets to see the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. ‘My favourite walk in the city is around Magasinsgatan but the coolest landmark is Skårsgatan

M i k a L i ias 解释。
globalblue.com
Björk & Berries , Make Up Store Face Stock hol m 与 M a ke Up Store则提供了获得健康、闪亮肤色的 捷径。
