ALOHA PARIS The bright Hawaiian shirt is reborn this season and is back on the must-have lists of stylish men across the world. This muted version by Parisian brand Brooklyn We Go Hard is one of the best we’ve seen. Inspired by urban culture and street fashion, BWGH has been making youthful, on-trend menswear since 2010. Already well

known on the Paris scene, the team has made a lot of fashion friends and previously has collaborated with Kitsune, Opening Ceremony and Colette. The most stylish way to wear a Hawaiian shirt this season is with unexpected pairings, so take it out of context and couple it with a tailored suit. hl BWGH Hawaii shirt, â‚Ź128, Galeries Lafayette, 40 boulevard Haussmann, 75009 Paris, +33 (0)1 4282 3456, bwgh.fr

Visitors to Le Chocolat Alain Ducasse can see the master chocolate makers at work and also have the chance to purchase their delicious creations in the shop. Founded in Paris in 1803 by army ofcer Claude Arthus-Bertrand, and with a list of distinguished clients that includes the French government, Arthus-Bertrand began as a manufacturer of medals. Many esteemed names have been behind its designs, including FrĂŠdĂŠric Auguste Bartholdi, sculptor of the Statue of Liberty. Today the company makes jewellery as well as medals and ensures each piece is made to the standards upheld since 1803. Passages Of Time The city’s stunning historic arcades ofer unique shopping experiences, Beth Druce discovers 60

There are places that inspire stories, and stories that inspire places. In the hidden passageways of Paris, one imagines both are true. From the moment you set foot inside these ornate, historic places, you feel you might slip softly through the windows of time. It was at the end of the 1700s that some 150 interconnecting passages were built in Paris as a globalblue.com

way to provide wealthy Parisians with somewhere they could shop, yet be spared the city’s rain. Two hundred years on and around 20 of these glass-roofed arcades remain open and accessible, hidden pathways of the busy streets that give way to a parallel universe with an atmosphere entirely of its own. provides access to many of these passages, the most impressive of which may well be Galerie Vivienne. Restored to its former neoclassical glory, its mosaic in-laid foors and hand-carved wooden features smoothly transport you to the 1800s. Jean Paul Gaultier opened his frst store here in 1986 and the designer is still very much in residence, as Galerie Vivienne houses his fagship today. Close by, textile boutique Wolf et Descourtis features one-of designs by Didier Ludot; he has outftted Madonna in his whimsical attires, and has been described by Hamish Bowles, an editor-at-large for Vogue, as ‘the vanguard’ of vintage couture. To celebrate your purchases, visit the wine bar Les Caves Legrand or the tea room A Priori. Avsh Alom Gur is a designer whose love afair with the city’s Above: Galerie Vivienne

‘It’s about the journey, about stepping back in time’ Avsh Alom Gur hidden passages started when he was working for Chloé more than a decade ago, and he frequently returns to be inspired by ‘unexpected items that could provoke creativity’. ‘In today’s world, it can be difcult to fnd corners with authenticity, especially when it comes to retail,’ he explains. Authenticity of a theatrical kind can be found between Saint Martin and Quincampoix, where the buildings that mark the entrance to Passage Molière boast

a bold, vibrantly coloured exterior, yet the atmosphere is peaceful and serene. Just 45 metres in length, Passage Molière was named after the 17th century French playwright, whose work was often performed in the theatre here. Today it is called Maison de la Poésie and hosts cultural events, while Librairie Scaramouche sources rare cinema posters. ‘One of the best aspects of the Passage Joufroy is that the restorers haven’t embalmed it in good taste,’ notes the arts critic Richard B Woodward about this well-loved passage in the ninth arrondissement. Segas which specialises in antique walking sticks. Like many of the passages, you won’t fnd Le Passage du GrandCerf on a map, yet it’s distinctive: the wooden stag’s head, the dragonfy and the crab that adorn the walls aford it a curious eccentricity. It’s tall, an imposing 12 metres high, and has a quirky vibe that attracts an eclectic mix of proprietors, including jewellery designers Eric et Lydie, whose ornate, colourful designs were discovered by Christian Lacroix. There are also never-ending racks of vintage eyewear at Pour Vos Beaux Yeux while the wittily named Le Pas Sage (The Wise Step) is a bistro with a nonchalant, relaxed feel and is a perfect place for a restorative drink or a plate of charcuterie.

While the structural beauty of many passages will always impress, many of the stores also leave a longlasting impression, like Tombées du Camion (‘fell of the back of a lorry’), a curiosity shop and fea market all in one, in the Passage des Panoramas. Here you’ll fnd everything from ET masks and dismembered dolls to mannequin heads and coloured buttons. ‘It’s about the journey, about stepping back in time and enjoying things because we don’t shop simply to fulfl a materialist need, we are after an emotional experience too,’ says Gur. From well-established tailors to new menswear labels, Paris has plenty to ofer the modern man. Josh Sims reports

Perfect fit

By any account it is an impressive client list: Karl Lagerfeld, David Niven, Orson Welles, Fred Astaire, Cary Grant and François Mitterand. All have shopped at Cifonelli, Parisian makers of timeless bespoke suiting since 1926. Today the company also produces more unusual ready-to-wear clothing including knitted tailored jackets and those made of tough yet soft yaks’ wool – tweed with a Tibetan twist. ‘I don’t want to make clothes in the same way my father or grandfather did,’ says Lorenzo Cifonelli. ‘Tailors can be too rigid in their ideas and too stufy. You have to keep moving forward and understand how people are living 61

now. Paris isn’t so well known for its tailoring for men, but the tailors who are here are very strong on the details, in a couture way.’ Cifonelli is not alone in providing a backbone of men’s style in the French capital. Parisian menswear goes beyond ‘bourgeois chic’ and among other French menswear greats are Dormeuil, widely appreciated for its fabrics, Zilli which is known for its leather jackets and shirts, Lacoste for the polo shirts that the company invented, and Armor-Lux, Saint James and Orcival, who between them created and popularised the breton top. And then there are the relative new guns, the likes of casualwear Lef: Berluti spring/summer 2014

skill, such as in shirt-making, could only be found in Paris,’ says Jean-Claude Colban, director of Charvet. Established in 1838, Charvet has counted Charles Baudelaire and Charles de Gaulle among its customers and the company is arguably the creator of the modern-day shirt. It is currently working with cotton growers on the Nile Delta to develop a type of cotton which will allow it to create ‘the appropriate shade of white we want for a shirt, because there is more than one shade of white’. Along with quality, style is an important factor in Parisian menswear: individual without being outlandish or obviously current, lush without being excessive. ‘There’s a particular ‘favour’ to Parisian menswear,’ says Colban. ‘It’s classic, but there’s more to it than that. There is a subtlety and balance.’ Alessandro Sartori agrees and not only is he Italian, he has worked as a designer at Ermenegildo Zegna Above (from top): Charvet boutique, Paris; APC spring/summer 2014

and is now the creative head of one of Paris’s most famous shoemakers, Berluti. The company has introduced a men’s ready-to-wear line and recently opened a bespoke atelier in Paris. For Sartori, Parisian menswear is less about showstopping design and more about a renewed emphasis on weight, texture and richness. He sees this as a return to menswear’s traditional qualities which are in contrast to its recent ‘slightly crazy direction, where marketing and distribution and prices and numbers are driving the collections, rather than an appreciation for craftsmanship and a certain style.’ At Berluti, craftsmanship and style might be a parka in cashmere, a super-soft jumper or a Donegal wool three-piece suit with plenty of hand-fnished detail: felled seams, piped waistbands and hand-abraded leather buttons Above (both): Berluti spring/summer 2014

Such attention might lead to pieces being handed down the generations, from father to son

Such attention might lead to pieces being handed down the generations, from father to son. According to Sartori, Parisian fashion has its focus on ‘selecting certain pieces and really valuing them and the way they build on your wardrobe’ rather than on any one faddish brand. ‘That seems a much healthier way to shop.’ cifonelli.com, charvet.com, berluti.com

Vicomte A ofering a fresh take on aristocratic elegance, fashion label Vicomte A, which was set up by two brothers, adds a rebellious edge to otherwise traditional ensembles. Shirts, jackets, ties, sweaters and polo shirts all feature, with the use of bright colours and clashing prints adding a modern touch. the brothers’ equestrian background is also evident with tweeds and countryside checks found throughout. Crafted from the highest quality materials and boasting generous proportions, Loxwood bags can last a lifetime. the company favours sleek, simple shapes with a timeless aesthetic while its commitment to hand-fnishing ensures a perfect end product. Loxwood’s range is surprisingly varied, including luggage, small leather accessories, scarves and belts alongside its popular bags. the top-handle totes are a wardrobe essential – practical enough for everyday use but still chic if needed for a special occasion. team the spring-like peach tote with this season’s pastel shades or opt for a classic tan, which looks especially efective combined with dark denim and matching accessories. Longchamp It’s a curious fact that the renowned French luxury leather goods company Longchamp began as a tobacco store. Jean cassegrain was already selling leather items for smokers and created Longchamp in 1948 to develop this side of the business. The company later extended its range to small leather goods such as wallets and pouches for men and by 1955 the brand had branched into luggage; its frst boutique was opened at 390 rue Saint-honoré. With over 60 years of experience, the company reglobalblue.com

mains family run and is perhaps best known for its Le pliage bag ‒ this foldable fabric tote with leather handles has become an iconic product all over the world. Longchamp has recently set up collaborations with designers including Jeremy Scott to produce limited-edition versions of Le pliage, ensuring that there is always another item on every customer’s wish-list.
