Ostentation is out, discreet luxury is in: Elle Blakeman looks at how Switzerland’s super-rich have embraced stealth-wealth style

NO FLASH PLEASE

And the bride wore Armani: last summer, the world’s attention was briefy focused on the coming together of the great and the good from the worlds of fnance, media and music for musician Tina Turner’s wedding at her idyllic lakeside estate near Zürich. Part of the water was cordoned of, while a red canvas screen ensured privacy for the guests – just 120 of them, including David Bowie, Oprah

34 | F E AT U R E S

Winfrey and Sade. It was a perfect example of the discreet spending that characterises the way the jetset behave in Switzerland. Switzerland is a land of pleasing contradictions: with its favourable tax and privacy laws, it attracts many of the world’s super-rich, yet nothing is valued more than discretion. It produces some of the world’s fnest watches, jewellery and artisan food, but consumption here is a quiet afair. The Swiss rank the highest in average wealth in the world (a record-breaking $513,000 per adult), and the country’s billionaires are notoriously discreet, making it hard for outsiders to know where, when and for what they open their designer wallets. For the Swiss high-spending elite, the trafc-free promenade of Bahnhofstrasse in central Zürich (one of the most expensive streets in Europe for retail property) holds myriad delights. While this exclusive street

is home to several international brands (Louis Vuitton, Longchamp and Cartier, for instance), there are also some fantastic local gems to take advantage of. Bernie’s is a beautiful department store, carrying a mixture of big brands and fast fashion, alongside a selection of less obvious names: hats by Catarzi 1910 or classic cuts from Italian brands such as Peuterey and Messagerie. Those hunting for something more showstopping will be drawn to Gross Couture, also in Bahnhofstrasse, which stocks designs by the likes of Elie Saab, Oscar de la Renta, Valentino and Carlos Miele that are perfect for that lavish gala night at the opera. Meanwhile, the ultra-exclusive Trois Pommes boutiques in Storchengasse are also a haven for the area’s super-rich, ofering customers a carefully edited selection of stunning pieces over several foors. Lovers of minimalism fock to the rails of Jil Sander, Céline and the hard-tofnd Thom Browne, while those looking for

It’s hard to find out where, when and for what the Swiss open their wallets something bolder can fnd the latest looks from Giambattista Valli, Mary Katrantzou and Tom Ford. One name gathering some traction among locals looking for something a little diferent is Sheryne, one of just a handful of independent designers in Switzerland. Her stunning eveningwear pieces are all handmade using the fnest fabrics, including traditional African

ones. A playful approach to fashion is characteristic in Sônia Bogner’s designs, with gowns given a contemporary twist with details such as panelling and zips. St Moritz might be heralded as a winter retreat, but the summers here are just as beautiful and the resort has some of the best shopping in the country. Via Serlas ofers everything you need to stay stylish in the spring weather; Polo Ralph Lauren, Roberto Cavalli and Louis Vuitton are just some of the labels that have boutiques here. While in the area, it’s also worth paying a visit to Giorgio Misani to stock up on rare fne wines and Hanselmann for its legendary Engadiner Nusstorte (nut tart). Meanwhile, Geneva has seen incredible growth as the super-rich continue to fock to the city. As the beating heart of the luxury watch industry (Switzerland has a 54% market share in terms of value, despite accounting for

Switzerland attracts many of the world’s super-rich, yet nothing is valued more than discretion

just 2.5% of output), it is unsurprising that many of the leading watch brands have a big presence in Geneva. Not long ago, Omega paid millions for the former boutique of Louis Vuitton, while Audemars Piguet doubled its space on place de la Fusterie. Locals are guided by the annual Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), and those in the know invest mainly in Swiss names. Alongside the global brands such as Omega and Rolex, there are also several very impressive boutique labels catering to the stealth-wealth set. Both Vacheron Constantin and A Lange & Söhne create beautifully crafted pieces with a classic,

timeless aesthetic, while the technically stupefying Richard Mille or masters of material Hublot will appeal to those looking to make a serious style statement. And then, of course, there is food. The country is world-renowned for implausibly good chocolate, so the Swiss themselves are understandably hard to please. Confserie Sprüngli is the name to know here, ofering everything from bags of sugar-dusted almonds to huge chests of handmade chocolates. Meanwhile, since 2005, Oona has been producing caviar from Siberian sturgeon raised in pure Swiss mountain water. Just don’t serve it too lavishly – this is Switzerland, after all …

Raising the BaR Switzerland’s after-dark options are as diverse as the country itself, with venues ranging from elevated bars with panoramic views to cosy hotel hideaways with period décor. Verity Hogan raises a glass to some of the very best

Switzerland’s nightlife is as diverse as its inhabitants; from the vibrant club scene of Zürich’s industrial district to the chic rooftop bars of Lucerne, there is a venue to suit every taste and budget. The range of drinks on ofer is similarly varied, although wine is the most popular by far. Wine is produced all over Switzerland, and is generally of extremely high quality and often best enjoyed young. Many of the country’s wines, including those from the Lake Geneva region, are intended for local consumption, while most wines for export are produced in the Valais, Ticino and Seeland. Switzerland is also known for its delicious, yet highly potent, liqueurs; the unofcial national drink kirsch is made from cherries, while pfümli is crafted from plums. Each city has a distinctive nightlife culture; Zürich enjoys a reputation as one of Europe’s best party cities and has the country’s highest density of clubs, while the variety of Lucerne’s nightlife is also acclaimed. In contrast, Geneva has been able to cater to a cross section of society, ofering bars that see businessmen and boho students sharing tables and a popular outdoor drinking culture that emerges as soon as the sun starts to shine. globalblue.com

0 815 With its sharply modern design aesthetic and sophisticated jet-black and chocolate-brown colour scheme, 0815 deserves its reputation as one of Zürich’s most style-conscious drinking spots. A soundtrack of modern electro adds atmosphere to the restrained interior, while the drinks selection includes enough variety to suit any taste. Premium spirits, cocktails and fne wines all feature, but don’t miss out on the bar’s delicious non-alcoholic cocktails: the Tempest, with its mix of lemon, lime, passion fruit and tonic water, is the perfect midday refreshment. 0815, Lintheschergasse 23, 8001 Zürich, +41 (0)44 211 0815, 0815.dj

lucerne’s National Bar is often described as the most beautiful in the city; its interior echoes the period style of the 1870s, with chequerboard fooring, marble columns and an ornate chandelier exuding turnof-the-century charm. the bar’s drinks selection is extensive, but malt whisky is its speciality; connoisseurs will marvel at the range available, sourced from every scottish region. WE Fashion We Fashion encourages its visitors to fnd their own style; rather than dictating wardrobe choices based on current seasonal trends, the label concentrates on personalityrich pieces that can easily integrate into your existing wardrobe. Touches of northern European infuence are seen in its understated colour palette and its use of typically classic cuts, and items often have a contemporary feel. The neutrality and timeless elegance of all the items guarantee a refned look, regardless of which pieces are put together. We Fashion, Weggisgasse 40, 6004 Lucerne, +41 (0)41 410 2432, wefashion.ch

53: When You Shop The World, Shop Tax Free

Via S e r l a s Polo R a lph L au ren,Rober to Cava l l i globalblue.com

VICTORINOX Victorinox, the brand famous for creating the legendary Swiss Army knife, celebrates its 130th anniversary this year. Its story begins in 1884, when Karl Elsener set up a small workshop to make knives for the Swiss Army. He developed a small, sturdy folding knife, combined with other functions, which could be carried in a pocket – and so a classic was born. Before long this revolutionary design became a hit with soldiers and civilians around the world, thanks to its precision engineering and globalblue.com

durability. The company has since expanded its range considerably and now ofers timepieces, travel accessories, clothing and fragrance, in addition to an abundance of variations on the original pocketknife in every colour and tool combination conceivable. Emulate the 1930s Montiererei factory workers pictured above by building your own on a visit to Victorinox’s museum in Brunnen on the shores of Lake Lucerne; you can even have it engraved. gl Victorinox, 2 rue de MarchÊ, 1204 Geneva, +41 (0)22 318 6340, victorinox.com * for map go to page 49
